Market Overview Maldives has recorded over 500,000 tourist arrivals and crossed the half-million mark so far in this year – the Golden Jubilee Year of Tourism.
As per the latest statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism on 25th April 2022, 549,500 tourist arrivals have been recorded so far. The record amount of half-million tourists was noted on 14th April 2022, with the United Kingdom leading the market share for the first time ever in the Maldives’ tourism history. UK market triumphed over the Russian market earlier this month and contributes 13% of the market share currently. India is also dominating over the Russian market and leads in the second place contributing 11.3% of the market share. Russia follows at third with 10% market share. Other top markets include Germany, Italy, USA, France, Switzerland, Australia & Saudi Arabia. The tourist arrivals recorded this optimistic year shows an increase of more than 47% compared to the same period in 2021. During the ongoing year, an average of 4,916 daily arrivals are being maintained, with their stay period recorded over 8 days. This year also celebrates an exceptional year, marking 50 years – the Golden Jubilee celebration of tourism in the Maldives. During the event held to welcome the 1.3 millionth tourist arrival of 2021, Minister of Tourism Dr Abdulla Mausoom revealed that they remain hopeful to achieve 2022’s target; set at 2 million arrivals. The Maldives also secured the title of ‘World’s Leading Destination’ (among several other accolades) at the 2021 World Travel Awards, globally recognised as the hallmark of industry excellence. This is the second consecutive year that the Maldives had successfully earned this prestigious title, a shining testimony of the trust placed in the ‘magic of Maldivian hospitality’ by travellers from all over the globe.

Redefining MICE Tourism in the Maldives The Maldives is best known for being an island destination that takes your breath away at first glance, with the mesmerising islands enveloped in vivid turquoise rings contrasting the deep blue of the ocean around them. With some of the most exquisite resorts in the world, Maldives is all about having a rendezvous with nature and comfort. While tourists travel mainly for leisure and relaxation at this tropical haven, what most people may not know is that the Maldives also has the potential to be the ultimate MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Exhibitions) destination in Asia. The Maldives already has the resources to deliver innovative solutions and drive new possibilities for the MICE industry. The country has all the fundamentals of a good host for MICE events: unique event venues, professional services, phenomenal facilities, accessibility, and alluring attractions. It is for those who want something different, something new – an experience like no other, where you won’t get anywhere else. In the Maldives, MICE event organizers get to break free from traditional meeting spaces. The big table with formal chairs, awkward eye contact, classroom or theatre-style setups in a place that is greige is the first annoying visual you get when you think of meeting space. Instead, an array of unconventional gathering spaces is available in the Maldives to truly redefine the concept of meetings. Underwater restaurants, overwater restaurants, beaches, infinity pools, and even the sandbanks are great meeting spaces to infuse MICE events with fresher and innovative energy. Outdoor cinemas by the sea that can be repurposed for presentations sound so much better than the projectors in the traditional meeting spaces. The opportunity to enjoy magnificent views is always a good meeting enhancement. These arrangements can offer more interaction between the attendees encouraging collaboration and creativity. Attendees are more likely to work in harmony with each other making it the optimum way to reach the company goals. All events are already shifting focus away from content to experience, as people need a meaningful transformative experience to feel something. This experience of breaking free from the constraints of stuffy meeting space is bound to create an engaging and transformative event.
The Maldives offers the perfect MICE getaway where guests can enjoy a productive and simultaneously rejuvenating experience. A redefined experience where elements such as wellness and retreat are fused will stimulate guests to think outside the box and conjure fresh new ideas. Traditional MICE events will have attendees engage in the main sessions in the selected event venue for the duration of each session and break sessions in the conventional sense usually consist of food, relaxation, and networking which makes the experience very inhibiting and boring. To guarantee a unique experience, yoga by the beach, spa sessions over water, detoxification programs, reflexology and facial sessions can all be part of the MICE event experience in the Maldives. Each resort has its own bespoke treatment sets with the healing benefits of the surrounding environment. Not to forget, here, guests can embark on an unforgettable culinary journey with worldrenowned chefs curating authentic dishes for them. MICE events need not be stressful and hectic where guests are immersed in the cyber world for the entirety of the event. Liberate yourself from the usual MICE ordeal and immerse yourself in the redefined experience only in the Maldives. MICE events tend to pose environmental concerns that arise from the use of energy, transportation, waste management and water while conducting these types of events. High usage of these elements creates undesirable effects on the ecosystem. This, however, does not need to be the case in the Maldives. Enter a growing number of eco-conscious resorts in the island nation that are dedicated to environmental and social sustainability. The barefoot affair in the Maldives is the unmatchable MICE experience for you. MICE planners can organise environmental and social activities that embrace the sustainable spirit of the destination. From beachfront boardrooms to ecological experiences, these sessions will strengthen bonds and reach responsible outcomes. Plastic-free islands with refillable organic toiletries, on-site desalinization plants, solar panel installation, sandbank cleanups and conservation of biodiversity are some of the practices being carried
out. Hosting a MICE event in an eco-lover’s fantasyland not only benefits your company, but environmental conservation is what all companies should be aiming for in this day and age. This paves way for tourism and one of the world’s most fragile ecosystems to both coexist and delight far into the future. MICE tourism in this small island nation is all about perspective. By breaking free from traditional norms of MICE events, the possibilities of creating new events are endless. Guests can immerse themselves in nature guaranteed to help them be the best version of themselves. Redefining MICE tourism in the Maldives presents experiences often not previously available. It is one worth keeping an eye out for.

Visit Maldives Launches “Redefining MICE” Global Campaign Launched by Visit Maldives on the sidelines of the MILT Congress 2021, “Redefining MICE” is a concept that aims to redefine ideas in the current market regarding traveling to conduct MICE activities. The purpose of this campaign is to promote the Maldives as an emerging top destination to conduct meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) events. It aims to redefine the business environment, which is often thought to be somber, serious and limited to boardrooms and conference halls. Through this campaign Maldives will be promoted as a destination that is perfect to seamlessly merge business with leisure by promoting different experiences. “Maldives is unparalleled in offering that quintessential ‘laid-back’ atmosphere for thought provoking and stimulating discussions,” Managing Director of Visit Maldives, Thoyyib Mohamed said while speaking during the launch of the Redefine MICE campaign. Through this global campaign Maldives will be promoted as an ideally located venue for regional gatherings, providing the opportunity to transform any MICE event from somber to exciting.
Given the natural advantages of the Maldives when it comes to safety, seclusion and privacy, the destination is able to cater to any and all kinds of MICE travellers while seamlessly integrating business concepts into leisure activities, resulting in a unique blend of MICE experiences that have proven exceptionally popular to global audiences. MMPRC has been running promotional activities and campaigns for the global and targeted audiences tom accelerate the success of the MICE industry in the Maldives. MMPRC has already participated in several large tourism fairs in India this year, one of the largest source markets for MICE travellers, such as OTM 2022, and have partnered with relevant and prominent industry partners from India for joint-campaigns such as the Tri Campaign with Yatra & Go Air, and the EDM Campaign with Exchange4Media.

Eddie Teh General Manager at Soneva Fushi Eddie Teh is the General Manager of Soneva Fushi, an award-winning desert island hideaway situated in the stunning Baa Atoll of the Maldives. Our team had a chat with Mr. Teh to find out more about his career so far, and to delve deeper into what sets Soneva Fushi apart from other luxury resorts. Can you tell us about your career prior to joining Soneva Fushi? Before I joined Soneva, I was with Orient-Express Hotels, which was subsequently rebranded to Belmond. I started with them back in 1995 and was based in Australia for many years before being transferred around Asia. While in Australia, I took on the role of Regional Food and Beverage Director of the Orient Express in 2008. Then in 2011, I moved to Luang Prabang in Laos to become General Manager of La Residence Phou Vao. My last posting was in Yangon in Myanmar to take on the role of General Manager for Belmond River Cruises and Tours until 2016 when I was promoted to Area General Manager of Belmond Myanmar. This was right before I joined Soneva Fushi What has your experience at Soneva Fushi been like? I met Sonu in 2017 when we shared a stage delivering speeches about the most important aspects of luxury travel. That’s how I first learned about Soneva. I found it very intriguing, so I started following the brand. Now that I’ve been at Soneva Fushi for 10 months, I’ve found that it does exactly what it promises. Sustainability and the importance of being eco-friendly – these are often lost in the world of clichés that most hospitality companies talk about. But to show how really committed you are, it takes a lot of effort. Soneva Fushi is not simply just a resort. It delivers hospitality with a sense of consciousness for the environment and what it can contribute back to its community. Here, ‘Slow Life’ is a guiding principle for all staff, who are known as Hosts. It is the moral compass, as well as the operating compass. Sustainability runs through Soneva’s, and Soneva Fushi’s, core and negative environmental impacts of always keep to a minimum – which is both difficult and yet critical, for a company which operates resorts in remote places of pristine natural beauty. How are you finding the Maldives so far? This is my first experience in the Maldives. I grew up on the island of Penang, in Malaysia. It’s quite similar to the Maldives in that the most common occupation is working for a hotel. So, in a way, it feels like home, but it’s a lot more beautiful. The seas are azure blue, and it almost feels like you have the skies open to yourself. Every time you walk around the islands, you feel this expansive sense of space.
What do you consider to be your greatest personal success? I started from very humble beginnings in Penang, and just like in the Maldives, the only work one could find was in hotels and resorts. I was very fortunate to be able to work in hospitality and make that a career. It’s probably not for everybody because it has to be something that you love to do. So, I’d say my greatest personal achievement is progressing in my career long enough to see the world, to be able to work and meet people, engage with the locals and be a part of their community. While at Belmond, I also helped establish the Belmond Free Clinic, which served over 300 patients weekly. This initiative was named the Best CSR Program for Belmond worldwide. In your opinion, how do you think Soneva sets itself apart from other luxury resort brands in the Maldives? Well, how would you determine luxury? Sometimes the more sustainable option is the more luxurious one. For someone living in an urban environment, dining in the middle of a private lagoon, going on a sunset dolphin cruise or enjoying an intimate ‘no menu’ meal from a Michelin-starred chef in a stunning natural location is rare. Dishes made with ingredients that were picked that morning become luxurious. Snorkelling above a swirling feeding frenzy of manta rays or meeting a local fisherman and learning how to fish sustainably are incredibly unique experiences. At Soneva we offer our guests the ability to completely disconnect from their daily lives. We encourage our guests to walk barefoot, turn the Wi-Fi off in their villa and ignore the news. Instead, we invite them to immerse themselves in the beauty of our resorts, the experiences that we offer and, most importantly, to connect with each other. We are also both the owners and operators of our resorts, which allows us to ensure that we are very focused on our philosophy and enhancing that. We are able to evolve and innovate rapidly as the world changes. A visit to a Soneva will clearly show how different we are from any other luxury experience, which exists in the markets where we operate.
What do you foresee for the hospitality industry in the Maldives? With climate change and its effects so apparent, I believe sustainability will be a key pillar. The Maldives has already been recognised for its focus on environmental work, but I believe there is still potential for growth in this area. Sustainability in tourism is especially important because it directly impacts both the local communities and the environment. Soneva believes that luxury and sustainability can be interconnected concepts and, since the beginning, has pioneered a business model with sustainability at its heart.

Hawwa Nasra First Officer at Trans Maldivian Airways We sat down with Hawwa Nasra, First Officer at Trans Maldivian Airways to delve into her career and the challenges she has faced in her journey. TMA is currently nearing a fleet of 60 aircraft and currently operates to over 80 resorts across 14 atolls. More than 300 TMA flights take to the Maldivian skies every single day, totaling more than 100,000 trips per year. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you started your career. My name is Nasra. I have been working as a First Officer at TMA for the past year. I have always had an interest in the aviation industry and to one day become a pilot since an early age. I would be very fascinated when I see planes passing by. But I was hesitant to pursue it at first; I didn’t think I could do it since I was a girl. As a kid, I didn’t have the courage to dream that big. I wanted to explore the field of aviation after my A-Levels, so I joined Villa Air, Fly Me as a flight attendant. This was an excellent stepping stone into the industry. Straight out of school, going into this job was very eye-opening. I went through multiple trainings and familiarization and worked as an assist crew and as an in-flight supervisor. It gave me a general idea of how the industry works in the Maldives. It made me realize that I did indeed want to become a pilot. After two years at Fly Me, I joined flying school to pursue my dream career as a pilot. How has your experience been in the industry so far? It’s very exciting. I get to meet a lot of different people on a daily basis. I get to work with different people as well and have met great mentors. I was in the cabin before, and now in the cockpit. The scope of work is very different, but at the end of the day, we work towards the same goal – the safety of the flight and our guests. Could you describe a typical day in the life of a seaplane pilot? My day starts at 4 am and I would report to work by 5 am. The first thing would be to check the assigned aircraft, remove the night ropes, pump the floats, do a walk around with the captain, see if the aircraft is fit to fly. We are airborne at the first light of day. A typical day consists of back-to-back flights from sunrise to sunset. We would do multiple sectors a day. We have days where we have day-shuts and we will spend a few hours at the resort, maybe go for a swim, ride a bicycle at the island, grab lunch, things like that. If we have early morning departures, we stay overnight at the resort, or we’re back in the base. Every flight brings new experiences. I really do enjoy the barefoot, laid-back lifestyle, and the fact that I don’t have to wear a tie. What is the best part about your job? The views, I could never get tired of the views. Catching rainbows and sunsets never gets old. The thrill of flying is always exciting. When operating on floats, every take-off
and every landing is different. Water conditions, the tide, the location of the platforms, and working with different captains each bring a different experience. No two flights are the same. The runway and the docking facilities are ever-changing. The best part about working at TMA specifically is how encouraging the seniors are. They don’t look at you differently because you’re a girl. They are incredibly supportive and push you to be the best version of yourself. At TMA, we get to fly a lot and build our hours and practice manual flying. It’s a great place to develop our skills, and just for the experience alone as well!
What are the main challenges as a professional in your field? The job is physically challenging, comes with long hours and some heavy lifting. But it is worth it in the end. I am very passionate about what I do, and work doesn’t feel like work. I really enjoy it. Most challenges that we face are almost entirely based on societal perceptions. Our society still sees this profession as a man’s job. Which puts a lot of pressure on us; you tell yourself that you need to work twice as hard to prove to yourself, and to the society that you are just as good as your male counterparts. What do you think we can do to encourage gender equality in the aviation industry? Perception change! People are aware of the need for gender equality through school, education. But their perceptions remain. The industry in general has matured enough over the years, but it is still a long way before people’s attitudes change. When I was a flight attendant and told people that I wanted to become a Pilot, not many people took me seriously. I have had people tell me that it’s not a good career as a woman, especially if I wanted to build a family. Before joining TMA, people told me that it will be a very tiring job and I would not be able to take it. To change people’s perceptions, I think we need more living role models. Shine a light on women who are out here challenging stereotypes and misconceptions, and acing it in their respective fields. Encourage the younger generations through example.
What advice would you give to other women looking to join the field? Motivate yourself to be the best you can be, and don’t allow preconceptions to prevent you from doing what you love. The field of aviation and that of being a pilot is equally challenging and very rewarding as well. So don’t let anyone try to discourage you. If you have the passion, work hard, aim high and reach for the sky!

Ibad Abdulla Resort Manager at Furaveri Maldives Ibad Abdulla was born and raised in Fuvahmulah and completed his Bachelor of International Hospitality Management from Taylors University, Malaysia. He also holds a Master of Business Administration certificate from Villa College in affiliation with University of West England. His journey in hospitality began as a reservation assistant and gradually grew to the position of Management Trainee, Assistant F&B Manager before taking the role of Executive Assistant Manager. What made you choose hospitality as a profession and tell us about how you started your career? When I was a little boy, I always wanted to become a news anchor. After completing my A’levels, I was planning to do a journalism course. But things changed when a cousin of mine took me to a resort on a school holiday. That was my first experience in a resort. I was impressed by the professionalism displayed by the resort staff and wanted to experience it at least once in my life. I got the opportunity to work at Paradise Island Resort as a trainee. After three months, I was offered the job of Reservations Assistant, and this began my career in this industry. What is the secret behind having such a successful career at a young age? The secret for my success is following my dreams and working with passion and commitment. From the time I was doing my Bachelor’s Degree, I had always dreamed to become the youngest General Manager in the Maldives. Since then, I have been chasing my dream and taking on all the challenges that have come my way. I believe facing challenges is a great way for self-development. I always take my job very seriously and dedicate most of my time to accomplishing my goals. What are the challenges you have faced in your career, and how did you overcome it? Today graduates of hotel schools are more reluctant to start at the bottom and aspire for an accelerated career path because of the costs of their education. It’s long hard work as a manager. You can work long hours, and most of the time you’re on your feet. You work every special event – Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and Valentines. Resorts never close so I am on call 24/7. People see this industry as a last resort or something you can get in to when your career is not going anywhere. For years, you serve people and clean up after them. I have worked in a resort with high turnover and employed so many people, but it still is not seen as a particularly desirable or worthy job by many people. Patience is something that is
highly required. We have to deal with young unskilled staff a lot of the time, not to mention meeting the expectations of a diverse guest segment. You have to be prepared to work hard; before you reach senior management, the shifts are long. You have to get out of bed after a few hours of sleep and be happy and ready to start again. I can safely say that the hospitality industry has made me a better person. It has made me develop self-discipline, time management skills and so on. It has also made me self-reliant and given me the opportunity to serve which is what we are all here for… the look of joy on our guests’ faces is the most gratifying thing we can possibly see in our professional lives.
Do you think we can maintain the tourism industry’s local versus foreign ratio in senior roles? I strongly feel we can maintain the ratio because we have a lot of locals who are skillful and passionate to grow in the industry. The more opportunities we provide them with, the more chances they get to grow in this field. In some areas there are very few trained locals, such as spa and wellness. There’s a need to have better hotel schools to train individuals for such positions. Resorts should have more management trainee programmes to build local talents for managerial positions as this will give local talents the drive to excel in this field. It’s good to see that in most of the local brands, they prefer to have locals for the key management. What is the best advice you can give to young adults looking to join the industry? The tourism industry offers a lot of career opportunities for fresh graduates and young adults. My advice is to take every opportunity you get. It’s not the brand that matters. It’s about the willingness and passion to learn. If you are new and uncertain about taking a path in the industry, get advice from industry professionals, but most importantly, be committed to the job. Is there anything else you would like to highlight? Hospitality has made me a better person. It has made me develop self-discipline, time management skills and so on. It has also made me self-reliant and given me the opportunity to serve which is what we are all here for… the look of joy on our guests’ faces is the most gratifying thing we can possibly see in our professional lives.

Fathimath Bishaara Mohamed Whatever Whenever Agent at W Maldives Bishaara Mohamed (Bisha) is from south of Maldives, Addu, and started her career as an apprentice in 2015. This is when she found her strong interest in the hospitality industry and now, she is working as a Whatever, Whenever agent at W Maldives. What intrigued your interest to become a Whatever/ Whenever Agent (Front Office Agent) in this industry? Since I started my career in hospitality working in the F&B Department, I always wanted to join the front office team as I felt it would give me more opportunities to connect with guests from different parts of the world, allowing me to understand what we can offer them to elevate their guest experience. What is your biggest personal achievement so far? Being able to be away from my family and friends and focus on having a career, I would say is the biggest personal achievement for me. The natural setting of the resort business here in the Maldives provides us with a unique working environment – it is isolation from everything and everyone. Working for so long away from the people we love and care for has tested my inner strength and made me stronger, emotionally, and mentally. As a woman working in a male-dominated field, do you face any challenges? How has the Maldivian tourism industry changed over the last few years? As I started just recently, compared to other female role models in hospitality who have been in the industry, I don’t find it difficult and challenging in terms of gender differences. Female associates are very well accepted by everyone from the entire team, organization, and the Maldives as a nation itself. Nowadays, it has become a trend that after studies, young women are joining the industry.
What differentiates W Maldives from other resorts, in terms of work environment? W Maldives is more than a place to work, it’s an experience and a lifestyle that reflects our personalities and passions. We live the brand – simply speaking. Whoever we are, whichever gender we prefer, whatever culture or race we come from, whatever views we have in our lives – we get to be ourselves. We are a wildly diverse community that celebrates individuality, freedom, and creativity. And all of this, motivates me even more as a human and as a woman. What advice would you give to other ladies looking to start their career in hospitality? For other ladies who are looking forward to starting their career, I would say to begin with a goal in your mind. Never quit and always keep going. Success comes with tons of hard work and patience. As for me, I receive a lot of support from my family and friends. Their support and belief in me made me come this far, constantly pushing me to keep moving forward.

‘TEDxBaa Atoll – The Slow Life’ Concludes, Sparking Dialogue About Purpose Far Beyond the Superficial On the night of 19th March, on the island of Kunfunadhoo in the pristine Baa Atoll, the first ever TEDx talk held in the Maldives successfully concluded, sparking conversation about greater meaning and purpose far beyond the superficial.
Hosted at Soneva Fushi on the evening of 19th March, TEDxBaaAtoll was a momentous celebration of culture, art, wellness and the environment. Embodying the “Slow Life” ethos of reconnecting with oneself and nature, the event provided a barefoot space for both local and international speakers to engage with and share new ideas, challenge the status quo, and seek a deeper understanding of our everchanging world. The first speaker of the night, entomologist Akib Jahir offered insight into integrated mosquito management and fostering environmental balance on our beautiful planet. Instead of the toxic yet widespread habit of fogging, Akib is a strong proponent of mosquito traps – a more
sustainable way of keeping those pesky bugs at bay. Shaziya ‘Saazu’ Saeed, a professional diver and surfer, spoke on the profound effects of ocean sports and recreational activities on mental well-being. Being connected to the ocean and nature, Saazu believes, can help heal our societies in ways we may not expect, even down to serious social issues such as substance abuse. Another spirited environmentalist, Hussain ‘Sendi’ Rasheed talked about the effects of climate change he has witnessed over the years, including devastating bleaching events and rise in sea temperatures. By utilizing nutrient-rich seaweed abundant here in the Maldives, Sendi asserts that we can adapt to the changing climate and live a generally healthier life. Mining the same vein, Aki Allahghol taught us how we can create a positive impact by creating large scale coral nurseries, and how the use of technology can build growth, resilience and increase survival rates for reefs. Youth activist Yala Shameem, at only 13 years of age, provided us with a heartwarming outlook on the current education system. From her perspective as a student, Yala addressed the need to nurture young talent by implementing various learning processes other than standardized tests, in a way that directly relates to everyday life. Aishath Adnan, a technology manager and co-founder of Women in Tech, shared her experience being a woman in STEM – a choice that was not well understood by her community at the time. She examined how we can empower girls to pursue careers in these male-dominated fields, while simultaneously dismantling gender norms embedded within our society. Another local speaker, cultural anthropologist Malsa Maaz spoke on capturing the human essence of cultural artifacts. Based on her dissertation fieldwork on coconut culture in Baa Kihaadhoo, Malsa weaved a story of how rich and robust culture can truly be, inviting us to observe its intangible elements that can be found all around us. Two international speakers also discussed ways in which we can enrich our work lives and deepen our purpose in the corporate realm. Bruce Bromley, the Chief Financial Officer of an award-winning luxury hospitality brand, revealed how finance and sustainability go hand in hand – two pillars of corporate development that are inextricably linked with one another. Meanwhile, speaker Carissa Nimah spoke on the power of creative job titles in motivating employees, drawing from her multifarious experience in PR and marketing.

Pullman Maldives Maamutaa Hosts Art Week with Local Artists Pullman Maldives Maamutaa believes that art is an adventure we all share, which is why they launched the first Art Week event in the Maldives from 14th to 20th March 2022. The week-long, art event was open to all in-house guests unleashing potential, sparking creativity and inspiring minds through art and nature. As a part of Pullman Maldives’ all-inclusive benefits, all the in-house guests experienced a unique perspective of contemporary art with 3 talented Maldivian artists and became immersed in exceptional art and design. The art week also included several daily activities for the guests where they could unleash their creativity by painting, drawing, or even trying nail art. Meet the artists:
Shimanie Shareef Shimanie is a multi-disciplinary artist and art teacher based in the Maldives, who practices mainly with traditional and digital forms of art and illustrations. She is also trained in adaptive arts, as an art teacher for people with disabilities and neurodiversity. She aims to make art more accessible and inclusive to people who have been neglected in the community a voice and a platform for expression to share this passion. Shimanie’s art is heavily influenced by Maldivian folklore, history, and nature. Colour and patterns are also integral to her art – she enjoys using a bright but considered palette for most of her illustrations. Art therapy for adults and kids, seascapes painting, and botanical painting are some of the activities conducted by Shimani during the art week.

Rooba
Lujain
Rooba has been drawing since she was a little girl. Her practice has grown into a variety of styles, and she has been learning and discovering herself along the way. Rooba’s approach to inventing styles is systemic. At first, she finds inspiration from other artists and then implements their style merged with her own. She practices one style for some time and refines it until she finds another art style to practice and refines again.
From an early age, Lujain had an interest in different forms of art and creative works. Recently, he came across Mixed Media Arts, which fascinated him, and his journey started in 2019. As a nail artist, his projects contain thousands of screws, which are later painted in Oil color. His passion for this kind of art, dedication, and patience are combined with one of the most iconic parts of the Maldives, the marine life.
In the process, she likes to learn new techniques at different art courses, and combining different variations is how she likes to experiment. This can mean different mediums like acrylic paint, pencil, ink, digital painting to different themes like fantasy, dark art, artistic nudes, landscapes, and more. Her passion and talents took her to London, where some of her paintings were displayed at the London Bomber Gallery along with other international artists.
One of his most iconic projects, The Survival, has the aim to create awareness for the delicate beauty of marine life and that we all are equally responsible to create a safe environment to protect them. The project contains approximately 7000 screws that are hand-painted.
Rooba conducted abstract painting, landscape painting, and intuitive painting for kids only during the art week.
Lujain showcased his artworks and conducted live demonstrations during art week.

A Look into the World’s Most Unique Airline Operations at Trans Maldivian Airways Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) – the world’s largest seaplane operator, with a fleet of almost 60 twin otter aircraft, offers travel to the remotest and unspoiled archipelagos of the Maldives. Catering to more than 80 resorts in the Maldives, the operations at TMA are extremely unique. Having one of the most distinctive airline operations in the world, TMA operates based on customer demand unlike traditional airlines that operate to a fixed schedule. Traditional airlines have a set number of aircrafts and predetermined routes fixed for their daily operations. On the contrary, TMA schedules and operates its fleet on a day-to-day basis as per the requirements of the resorts. Mohamed Shamman, the Reservations and Scheduling Manager of TMA stated that the scheduling team starts preparing the schedule only 2 days in advance once the resorts share the passengers’ details with them, which is typically 72 hours ahead of the travel date. A schedule is generated for the upcoming day with the objective of maximum seat utilization across the fleet while honoring the Service Level Agreements with each resort. The final schedule is sent to the resorts before the end of the day prior to handing it over to operations team. The operations team of TMA executes what the reservations and scheduling team has planned a day prior Once the Operations team is notified of the number of aircraft assigned and available for the next day together with the total number of passengers, they take control of the on-day scheduling and operations. TMA accepts any last-minute bookings and additional changes offering a great deal of flexibility to its resort partners. The schedule is shuffled on the day to cater to the additional changes requested by the resorts. With the trends on late bookings picking up all across the world, TMA’s operational flexibility provides a great deal of support the resorts who can then assure their guests a guaranteed transfer. “Never say no to any customers” – a motto at TMA since the beginning of its journey plays a very important role in providing their passengers with a memorable experience. Abdulla Faisal, Operations Manager of TMA said that none of the guests are left behind as TMA chops and changes its schedule to accommodate last minute requests. All last-minute additions and changes are accepted, and this is what makes TMA stand out from its competitors. The on-demand flexibility provided to the resorts shows the excellent service ecosystem TMA offers to its partners and customers. What started from being manual work that included
handwritten boarding passes has now evolved into a fully automated system at TMA. The in-house scheduling software automates the scheduling work as compared to the previous manual data punching into Excel sheets. Back in the day, since the international flights arriving in the Maldives were lower in number compared to today, afternoons were not busy for the reservations, scheduling, and operations team. Today, TMA operates back-to-back flights carrying more than 3000 passengers on an average on any day with afternoons and evenings being equally busy! The input to TMA’s system is essentially the international arrivals – spread across the day and on different international airlines landing at the Velana International Airport. The biggest challenges faced in day-to-day operations include the international flight delays which result in re-scheduling. Delays in the international flights are adjusted in the schedule in a manner that allows TMA to bring the departing passengers in time to catch their international flights, as well as transport incoming passengers. Regardless of the obstacles, TMA strives to offer the best services to its partners and passengers through its exciting and dynamic operations. With a unique way of dropping off customers to their doorsteps, TMA remains the preferred mode of transfer for an exceptional journey with the most scenic views of Maldives from the top!

SriLankan Airlines Records First Fourth Quarter Profit Since 2006
SriLankan Airlines has recorded its first profitable fourth quarter (Q4) since 2006 for the financial year that ended on 31 March 2022 with a group net profit of USD 1.7 million despite pandemic challenges. The airline was able to achieve this financial turnaround through various measures in its 2021-22 financial year including scaling down staff costs and overheads; renegotiating supplier contracts; increasing cargo revenue; and creating an ambitious growth plan capitalizing on pent-up travel demand. The initiatives paid off, with SriLankan making its first monthly profit since the onset of COVID-19 in December 2021 and continuing with a profit in the final quarter. The airline now has accumulated over USD 12 million in profits over the last 4 months as traffic has returned after the pandemic. SriLankan’s expansion initiative saw the launch of flights to several new destinations in the last year including Seoul; Moscow; Kathmandu and Paris. Frequencies were also gradually increased across the airline’s network in line with the recovery of the global travel industry and demand. The airline has also carried out major campaigns
73
to boost tourism to the country including a major initiative in India, roadshows supporting new routes and most recently sponsoring the popular French annual adventure trail, Raid Amazones, in March of this year. The airline is now back to 75 per cent of the passenger revenue it made pre-pandemic in Q4 of 2019-20. Correspondingly, passenger numbers also rose to near 700,000 for the quarter. The airline is making strong headway towards matching pre-pandemic levels as demand for international travel recovers. The payoff is not limited to the airline, as it remains by far the largest carrier of tourists into Sri Lanka. SriLankan is also a net foreign currency earner for the country owing to a sizeable share of its revenue being generated from international markets. Ashok Pathirage, Chairman of SriLankan Airlines stated, “I am pleased to note that we ended 2021-22 on a high note, given our first quarterly profit in many years. The passenger demand remained strong, and revenues continued to recover from the setbacks of the pandemic
during the quarter. Our annual expenditure remained within expectations. I am thankful to all our valued employees for contributing towards this achievement.” “We anticipate some headwinds in the first half of this financial year with high fuel prices and a short-term dip in demand to Sri Lanka. We have factored in these challenges and are working towards minimizing the impact with a strong business plan and a sound turnaround strategy to return to full-year profitability. Traffic is expected to recover fully by the end of the year as travel restrictions are eased off further. We will continue to support the tourism industry of Sri Lanka and be a catalyst for economic recovery,” added Richard Nuttall, Acting Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines.

Two Villa Hotels and Resorts Properties Awarded with Green Key Award Villa Hotels & Resorts currently operate five resorts in the Maldives and has been committed to sustainability since its inception. Two of their resorts have now received the Green Key award – Sun Island Resort and Spa (March 18, 2022); and Royal Island Resort and Spa (March 22, 2022). This award is considered a leading standard for excellence in environmental sustainability, focusing on tourism establishments adhering to high environmental standards; and informing and involving visitors to develop specific actions concentrated on natural resources and awareness on environmentally friendly practices. The award was designed for the travel and tourism industry and has been in existence since the early 1990s. For Villa Hotels & Resorts, sustainability means managing the resorts following the company’s guiding principles, which are to adhere to environmentally friendly practices continuously. As a result, the company has worked towards developing an ecologically friendly, sustainable, and responsible business, and considerable steps are put in place to minimize the resort operations’ impact on the environment. For example, these two Villa resorts have measures in place to calculate carbon footprint annually, with targets to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality. Furthermore, environmental committees at the resorts help preserve nature and generate staff and guests’ awareness on social, cultural, economic, quality, human rights, health, and safety issues. In addition, the resort teams are actively monitoring the use of water and energy with planned actions to reduce them considerably. A variety of environmental events and activities are planned by the teams to preserve nature and the surrounding underwater world to help further protect the environment. Both Villa resorts have organized a #StopPlasticPollution cleanup dive on their house reefs. Furthermore, the dive centers are set to organize a beach and snorkeling cleanup of the resorts’ lagoon. As the Maldives is one of the most endangered tourist destinations globally, environmental conservation and sustainability have always been a key element to the Villa Hotels and Resorts operations and integral in all that the resorts do. Since the establishment of Villa Hotels & Resorts in 1988, the resorts have worked to become more and more sustainable.
To achieve the Green Key award, Villa has maintained high environmental standards for its establishments through complex and rigorous documentation and frequent audits. Further, responsible teams comprehensively worked through stringent certification criteria to assure the resorts adhered to them, considering various factors such as sustainability, behavioral changes in guests, staff, and suppliers, social and economic considerations, and environmental conservation. Sun Island Resort and Spa and Royal Island Resort and Spa are the first to receive Green Key awards in the Maldives. In addition, the WELL Health-Safety Rating seal was recently earned by Paradise Island Resort and Spa, Sun Island Resort and Spa and Royal Island Resort and Spa through the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI).
