50 Years in the Making — The Story of Tourism in the Maldives

As a fishing community with a small airstrip in Hulhulé Island, the Maldives was not a well-known tourist destination prior to the 1970s. However, with the opening of Kurumba Resort, the advent of tourism in the Maldives completely changed the economic landscape. Since then, tourism in the Maldives has been booming, reaching many milestones over the last 50 years.

The first resort in the Maldives, Kurumba Resort, came about when George Corbin met with Ahmed Naseem from the Maldives Embassy. As a travel agent from Italy, he wanted to find the perfect place for his clients to relax and spend time with their family. In other words, an under-the-radar spot for tourists to escape. With that idea in mind, Naseem invited Corbin to the beautiful and untouched islands of the Maldives. They saw the potential of what the Maldives could offer to the rest of the world, and work began to launch the first resort in the Maldives.

Kurumba Resort opened in October 1972. It welcomed guests to a Maldivian hotel, a concept which was unheard of in the small fishing archipelago. The 30-room resort was a huge success, and Corbin and Naseem’s continued to harness the Maldives’ rich tourism potential. Kurumba’s success solidified foreign investments, tourism infrastructure took shape, and the economy improved significantly.

Over the last five decades, visitors from all over the globe have come to experience the Maldives’ untouched reefs, pristine white beaches, overwater bungalows, and awardwinning spas and restaurants. Now, the Maldives is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, welcoming over a million tourists annually. In 2020 and 2021, Maldives won the World’s Leading Destination award for two consecutive years, despite global challenges amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

On 3rd October 2022, we will be marking the momentous ‘golden jubilee’ celebration of tourism in the Maldives. The day has been declared by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as National Tourism Day, to celebrate the efforts of tourism workers and stakeholders, and the overall achievements of the industry as a whole.

Chitra Randhawa

Senior Regional Director of Sales, Asia Pacific at IDeaS

Chitra Randhawa is the Senior Regional Director of Sales, Asia Pacific at IDeaS. She is responsible for growing IDeaS’ revenue management business and enhancing the company’s leading brand reputation in the dynamic Asia Pacific hospitality sector.

With more than decades of experience, she has a record of growing businesses in the regional hospitality and travel sectors across a range of established and emerging markets in Asia Pacific including ANZ, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and India.

Our team sat down with Chitra to find out more about IDeaS and the various revenue management solutions they provide.

Could you tell us a bit about your career so far?

I’ve been in the hospitality industry for the last thirty years, mainly with hotels for a long time in sales and marketing. I started specializing in revenue management since the last six and a half years, and I’m really liking it as well.

Tell us more about IDeaS and the various revenue solutions you provide. How do you differentiate yourself from your competitors?

We offer revenue management solutions for all types of hotels and sizes, transform the right data into clear and actionable insight, and assist our clients to price forecast and report efficiently.

What are the main challenges faced by your consumers in hospitality, and why is revenue management so important in overcoming them?

With the post pandemic situation, traveller behaviour will be very different. Hotels can leverage automation or artificial intelligence to drive revenue with better pricing and forecasting.

It’s hard to carry out budgeting and forecasting by using data manually, especially in the last two or three years during the COVID-19 period. With less manpower resources across the hospitality industry, revenue automation is the most cost-efficient way to drive revenue with greater profit.

Could you tell us about some of IDeaS’ key business highlights in the Asia Pacific region?

One of the things that we are seeing lately is hotels investing more and more in hotel technologies, including revenue management, to get ready for travel rebound. More hotels rethink their revenue strategies to achieve total revenue optimization. We are not looking at just room revenue, we are looking at non-room revenue too.

Maldives is one of our major markets with increasing demand in advancing hotel revenue strategies. Some of our recent wins over the last 12 months include Hyatt, the Swire hotels, Cora Cora Maldives, Millennium Hotels and Resorts and the Radisson Hotel Group etc.

What are the emerging technological trends when it comes to revenue management, especially in the hospitality industry?

Apart from just the typical revenue management solutions, we have now got Optix, RevPlan, consolidating hotel data to deliver total revenue optimizations. We also have channel forecasting, delivering pivotal insights into channel demands and costs.

Ahmed Zahir

Hotel Manager at Angsana Velavaru

Ahmed Zahir is the Hotel Manager at Banyan Tree Group’s Angsana Velavaru. He joined Banyan Tree Group in 1995 and currently has over 27 years of experience with the Banyan Tree Group in the Maldives. Ahmed Zahir started his career as a laundry supervisor and was appointed the role of Hotel Manager at Angsana Velavaru in April 2021.

Could you tell us a bit about your career so far?

I joined Banyan Tree group on 16th July 1995 as a Laundry Supervisor and have over 34 years of experience in the industry. Before becoming the Hotel Manager, I have filled many positions such as Housekeeping Supervisor, Assistant Housekeeper, Executive Assistant Housekeeper, Executive Housekeeper, Front Office Manager, Rooms Division Manager and Executive Assistant Manager.

How does Banyan Tree compete with other international brands in Maldives?

Banyan Tree focuses on developing local talent since the very first day, while making the team’s safety and wellbeing their first priority. As a result, in all Banyan Tree properties, most of the leaders (HODs) are locals today. The company’s culture is authentic, and provides stewardship of cultural and natural heritage. Day by day the company’s purpose of “Embracing the Environment & Empowering the People” is becoming more meaningful than ever.

How would you describe your housekeeping journey and the role of housekeeping management at resorts?

I would describe housekeeping journey as enriching and exciting. The responsibility of housekeeping department is much more than making up the guest villas/rooms twice a day. Observant customers can judge how good the housekeeping department of the property within few minutes of their arrival. Therefore, the housekeeping management has to ensure that the entire hotel including back and front of house is always spotless at all times, not to mention the uniforms, linen, upholsteries, walkways as well as beach. They should empower and encourage the staff to be innovative while maintaining the standards of the hotel, and coordinate preventive maintenance of guest villas, laundry as well as public areas with property maintenance team is

one of the key roles of the housekeeping manager. Of course, managing departmental budget responsibly has to be on top of the list.

What have been the greatest challenges you have faced so far in your career?

I would say the 2004 tsunami and the recent COVID-19 pandemic were the most difficult times I have seen so far during my 34 years in the industry. Since we are very much dependent on tourism, both the Tsunami and Covid-19 had a negative impact on our lives as a whole. We had to take some tough decisions in order to sustain the business. During the pandemic I wasn’t able to meet my family for more than a year which was very tough for me. I try to stay positive in difficult times which helps me to overcome any challenges I may face.create an environment where female empowerment is as equal as males.

What do you consider to be your greatest personal success?

When colleagues approach me and tell me that I have inspired them to move forward in the industry, it makes me so happy. That is what I consider to be my greatest personal success.

Do you have any words of advice for those looking to succeed in this industry?

Hard work with dedication and full commitment will make you succeed. Understand that nothing can be achieved easily, hence the road to success will be bumpy and long. Those who strive harder will eventually survive. The people around you will always play a huge part in your success, so be humble and treat everybody with respect.

I would like to share a very good quote from Robert Kiyosaki: “When you are young, work to learn, not to earn” so do not miss any learning opportunity. Knowledge will be your biggest asset; the rest is secondary.

Amara Shafeeq

Marketing and Communications Manager at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa

Amara Shafeeq is the Marketing and Communications Manager at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, a luxe beachfront resort in North Male’ Atoll. Amara completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Marketing from Malaysia and joined the Bank of Maldives as a Social Media Coordinator. She then moved to Bristol, United Kingdom to do her Masters in Marketing Communication which made her realize how vast the marketing field is. Our team had a chat with Amara to find out more.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you started your career.

I wanted a career path that allowed me to do what I loved whilst also being able to contribute to the environment and marine conservation. During an educational seminar, I met coordinators of the Protect Maldives Seagrass Campaign. I happily offered my time and resources to the cause as a volunteer and assisted them with seminars, marketing efforts and creating awareness. My career in the hospitality industry really took off that very same year as a Marketing Communications Coordinator in one of the resorts and there was no looking back from there.

Being a female hotelier, do you think that it is easier than before? How did the Maldivian tourism industry change over the last few years?

Absolutely! Seeing a woman in the hospitality industry was rare in the past, almost taboo. It makes me proud to see more and more female hoteliers taking over the industry nowadays and I believe that people’s perspectives are changing, and in general, we are more accepting of women in the hospitality industry. The Maldivian tourism industry has become less maledominated, more respectful, diverse, more accustomed to treating women as equals and empowering women. I would not call it perfect yet, but we have come a long way and hopefully are on the right trajectory towards equitable opportunities and treatment for all.

Do you think it is possible to maintain a work-life balance for female hoteliers with families? What is your take on this?

I am truly blessed to come from a supportive family with very strong female role models and know several strong female colleagues as well. My mum and sister, who always keep me grounded, and my aunts are my biggest female inspirations. I have watched the women in my family juggle their wonderful careers and loving families in perfect harmony. I absolutely believe that female hoteliers with families can maintain a harmonious worklife balance because I have personally seen how my friends and colleagues balance their careers and home. Of course, there are challenges, but having the drive,

patience, support, and right mindset goes a long way. I am confident that if I choose to have a family in the future, I would not have to give up on being a hotelier.

What is your biggest personal achievement so far?

I have always set personal goals for myself, throughout my life. I am proud to be able to say I have achieved all of them so far. The biggest personal goal yet was for me to take on a leadership role when I turned 30. Funnily enough, it was time for a change and I decided to end my journey as a Marketing & Communications Coordinator just days before my 30th birthday. I looked for better opportunities and I was hired as a Marketing & Communications Manager at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa –just two months later! Taking on a leadership role at an established global hotel brand at 30 has been my biggest personal achievement so far.

What are the main challenges for a female hotelier?

As women are inherently perceived to be more caring and nurturing, and therefore the more sensitive and emotional of the genders, I think people tend to underestimate the strength and capability of female hoteliers. Our upbringing and the perception and mindset of our society have really projected a lack of confidence in women as capable of having both a career in hospitality and a family. Yet, women have been resilient throughout and proven otherwise. The way we have been brought up, the opportunities and level of access we have available in order to shine and make our voices heard, the role models we have, the expectations of people and the criticisms we have faced, the choices we have made, the support or lack thereof we have received all contribute to our perception of what we can and cannot achieve and how far we can go.

What advice would you give to other ladies looking forward to starting their career in the hospitality industry?

I am a huge advocate for female empowerment and I want to see more women finding their rightful place in this industry. I truly believe that women can move mountains. Having a strong and confident character goes a long way; people respect you regardless if you really try to just be yourself and apply your skills and talent to the best of your abilities. Mindset is key; never letting anyone else bring down your spirits and believing in yourself will take you farther than you ever think you could go. Take the time to ease into your surroundings when you start your career in hospitality, learn, and absorb as much as you can, from your peers, your superiors. Be punctual, respectful, and disciplined. Keep your head held high and never stop reaching for the stars!

3 Spectacular Dive Sites You Can Visit During Your Stay at NAKAI Maayafushi

A glistening pearl of North Ari, NAKAI Maayafushi is every dive enthusiast’s dream. Nestled in one of the finest atolls for diving in the Maldives, here, guests have direct access to a plethora of incredible sites of various depths — perfect for both advanced divers and beginners alike.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of three spectacular sites that you can visit during your stay at NAKAI Maayafushi.

Maalhos Thila

Maalhos Thila, also known as Blue Caves, is one of the most picturesque dive points in the waters of the Maldives. On the southern side of Maalhos Thila, starting from 7m down to 27m there is a series of caves, which is what makes this dive site especially interesting. The caves are shallower on the east side of the site, and reach the deepest point at the western side. In terms of marine fauna, Maalhos Thila is not one of the most diverse sites, but it has rare, exceptionally beautiful and vibrant soft and hard corals, along with other sea flora species. Due to the strong tidal currents, the dive is considered to be for experienced divers only.

Moofushi Rock

Moofushi Rock Maaya Thila

As for beginners, Moofushi is home to a large manta ray cleaning station. Particularly from December to April, this spot is a haven for these gentle giants that come to get rid of the plankton and grime that’s been accumulating. They dance and do some flips until the cleaner wrasses have done their jobs — truly a spectacle to watch! This cleaning station also gets visited by the likes of white tip sharks, napoleon wrasses, mobula rays and eagle rays.

And finally, how can we forget Maaya Thila? This is another wonderful dive in the Maayafushi area. Its size (80m in diameter) and the strength of the current that characterizes the area, allow you to easily circumnavigate the site and discover its diverse marine life. While the main attraction of this site are the white tips which move around the reef by the dozen, you can also find grey reef sharks, tuna, barracuda, blue-faced angelfish, moorish idol, parrotfish, butterflyfish, clown triggerfish and lionfish.

Accessible via seaplane and speedboat from the capital Male’, NAKAI Maayafushi offers a gorgeous island hideaway in the heart of the archipelago. Whether for a relaxing holiday or for one to discover nature, Maayafushi is the ideal island to fully enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Maldives.

3 Ways Fairmont Maldives is Leading the Charge Towards a More Sustainable Future

Sustainability is one of the key pillars at Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi. The property aspires to be as close to zero waste as they can, using current and future technology improvements to allow them to find better ways to reduce, reuse, recycle and upcycle their waste, whilst inspiring others globally to help secure a better future for our oceans and communities.

Earlier this year, Fairmont Maldives launched its Sustainability Lab project, a new hub of eco-education. From turning plastic waste into unique products, to educating guests and empowering local communities, here are three ways that Fairmont Maldives is leading the charge towards a more sustainable future.

Turning Waste into Wonder

Specialised machinery in the Sustainability Lab transforms and repurposes plastic waste into beautiful bespoke souvenirs, including luggage tags in the shape of turtles. After plastics have been collected from the beach, reef, and ocean, they are separated alongside glass and aluminium, before a series of machines are used to shred, melt, shape and press it into various unique products.

Community Upliftment

Community upliftment is part of Fairmont’s DNA, and the Sustainability Lab is on its way to becoming a recycling centre in the atoll and beyond, creating a culture of sustainability and accountability in local communities. Surrounding islands are encouraged to collect, sort, and recycle their plastic waste by sending it to Fairmont Maldives rather than leaving it to landfill or to be disposed of in the ocean. Schools are vested to teach classes on recycling, marine biodiversity, and ocean conservation, as well as visiting the resort to see the Sustainability Lab and the conservation projects being undertaken on the island, encouraging the next generation of eco-conscious travellers to care passionately about protecting their natural ecosystem.

Turtle Ranger Programme

One of the biggest problems facing sea turtles in the world today is the large quantity of plastic polluting the oceans. To emphasise the importance of tackling this issue, Fairmont Maldives has partnered with the Olive Ridley Project, a Maldives-based NGO focused on turtle research, and launched the Turtle Ranger Programme. Guests can join the Marine Biologist to protect turtle nests, assisting hatchlings in their journey from nest to ocean, rescuing turtles stuck in ghost nets and collecting vital tracking data to monitor migration patterns. Turtle Rangers also carry out workshops in the Sustainability Lab, converting plastic removed during beach cleaning into turtle shaped products using the bespoke machines.

SriLankan Airlines Flying the Nation’s Flag Globally for 43 Years

SriLankan Airlines has been the fabric of commercial aviation in Sri Lanka since the dawn of the airline 43 years ago. Launched on 1 September 1979, SriLankan Airlines’ 43rd anniversary is perhaps an opportune moment to reflect back on the airline’s greatest accomplishments, which are often intertwined with Sri Lanka’s own milestones in aviation and tourism.

SriLankan’s contribution to the economy of Sri Lanka as the country’s flag carrier cannot be understated. The airline has been the ultimate gateway between Sri Lanka and the world. With a current all-Airbus fleet of 24 aircrafts, SriLankan has been connecting Sri Lankans to 119 cities in 60 countries across continents through direct and codeshare operations. Moreover, SriLankan Airlines is the only airline to operate direct flights between Colombo and several global power cities including London, Paris, Frankfurt, Melbourne, Sydney, and Tokyo, enabling socio-economic ties with these markets.

SriLankan has also played a central role in introducing Sri Lanka and the country’s heritage to discerning international travellers. SriLankan has for nearly half a century helped bridge distances, position Sri Lanka as one of the most desired holiday destinations, and link millions of passengers to Colombo, Southern India and the Maldives with expedient connections.

The proof is in the numbers. Between 1979 and now, SriLankan has served over 89 million passenger journeys for both local and foreign passengers – a number that is equal to the population of Sri Lanka, four times over. The airline is, unquestionably, a key foreign currency earner for Sri Lanka as over 85 per cent of its revenue is earned in foreign currency from international markets.

SriLankan Airlines has also powered economic activity across the supply chain of the travel and tourism trade of Sri Lanka. This includes creating jobs and supporting the livelihoods, even if indirectly, for thousands employed in the sector. Consequently, it has been estimated that SriLankan Airlines makes a significant contribution to Sri Lanka’s gross domestic product.

Aside from passenger services, strategic business units of the airline such as SriLankan Cargo and SriLankan Engineering have all progressively contributed to the organization and country. SriLankan Cargo, stepped up its operations to fly essential goods and facilitated trade to and from Sri Lanka in the absence of other operators during the pandemic and effectively allowed the airline to redeploy resources for cargo operations in ensuring the survival of the airline as passenger travel ceased. SriLankan Cargo has transported a whopping volume of over one million metric tons across borders solely in the past ten years. Similarly, SriLankan Engineering has amped its profile in the region and beyond for providing outstanding third-party maintenance services for other airlines, sealed many new contracts including five signed just this year, and earned several million dollars in the process.

Nevertheless, the path leading up to the 43rd anniversary of Sri Lanka’s national carrier has been a rollercoaster of sorts with many challenges along the way. SriLankan Airlines, however, has persisted over the years, adapting when the situation necessitated it and extending steady support to the nation when needed. This has never been more evident than during times of national crisis.

Additionally, while the awards won by SriLankan since 1979 are too numerous to list, the airline has won close to 50 prestigious international awards in the last decade alone. The most recently secured awards include Diamond status by the APEX Health and Safety Audit powered by SimpliFlying 2021, World’s Leading Airline to the Indian Ocean by World Travel Awards 2021, APEX Passenger Choice Awards - Best WIFI in Central Asia 2022, and APEX Passenger Choice Awards - Best Cabin Service in Central Asia 2022.
