Market Overview

The Maldives’ tourism industry has demonstrated consistent growth over the past few years, with a steady increase in tourist arrivals year after year. Recently, the country celebrated a significant milestone by welcoming its 1 millionth tourist visitor, surpassing expectations and achieving this feat ahead of schedule.

As of August 5, 2023, the number of tourists arriving in the Maldives has reached 1,102,590, marking a 13.8% increase compared to the same period last year. This significant improvement from the 968,681 arrivals recorded in the same period of 2023 holds immense significance for the country’s tourism industry, as it continues to be a crucial contributor to the economy of the Maldives.

However, the second quarter of 2023 posed challenges for the Maldives’ tourism sector, as indicated by the Quarterly Business Survey published by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). During this period, the industry experienced a severe downturn, with noticeable declines in revenue, resort bookings, and labor market indicators. While input prices and average room rates also decreased, a slight increase in capital expenditure showcased some resilience within the sector. Fortunately, there are promising signs of potential recovery in the third quarter of 2023, as businesses appear less pessimistic about future activity. Despite persistent challenges, corporate executives maintain cautious optimism and closely monitor the tourism industry’s path to recovery and growth in the Maldives.

The Ministry of Tourism statistics reveal that the majority of tourists arriving in the Maldives hail from three main source markets: Russia, India, and the United Kingdom. These countries collectively account for 11.9%, 11.3%, and 8.9% of the market share, respectively, making them the top three source markets for Maldives tourism. Other prominent markets include China, Germany, Italy, USA, France, Switzerland, and Australia. The Maldives has successfully positioned itself as a highly soughtafter tropical destination, boasting an impressive daily average of 5,075 tourist arrivals and an average length of stay of 7.7 days.

The Maldives government has set an ambitious target of welcoming 1.9 million tourists by the end of 2023, a goal that appears well within reach given the current growth rate. Having already achieved its previous target of 1.6 million tourists in 2022, the country’s tourism industry reached a significant milestone. This success can be attributed to the Maldives’ diverse offerings and its commitment to attracting visitors from around the globe. For this year, the government has set a new target of attracting 1.9 million tourists. With the steady flow of tourists arriving daily and an expected increase during the peak tourism season in November and December, it is likely that this year’s target will also be accomplished.

Thomas Weber

General Manager at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives

Our team had the pleasure of conversing with Thomas Weber, the esteemed General Manager at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives. With a remarkable 35-year career in the hospitality industry, Thomas’s journey began with a deep-rooted passion for culinary arts inspired by a family friend. From his chef apprenticeship to leading roles in renowned establishments across the globe, Thomas brings a vast reservoir of experience and insights to his current position. His unwavering commitment to sustainability, preservation of local culture, and providing unforgettable guest experiences sets Alila Kothaifaru Maldives apart as a top choice for luxury travellers in the Maldives.

What inspired you to join the hospitality industry, and how did you start?

I was inspired by a friend of my parents who was an Executive Chef in New York in the 1970s. He gave my mother a cookbook as a gift, and I still have it on my bookshelf. The front cover of the book features a photo of him and 120 other chefs standing in a row, all wearing white uniforms and toques. The height of the toque indicates the chef’s rank in the kitchen. My parents always emphasized the importance of caring for and treating food with respect, and to this day, I enjoy simple, straightforward dishes.

I started my career with a chef’s apprenticeship at Hotel Pardenn in Klosters and later graduated from the hotel management school Belvoir in Zurich. After running the Höhwald restaurant in Klosters for five years, I started my international career at the Hilton in Hong Kong. Thereafter, I worked in various F&B and management roles with luxury hotels in Switzerland, Hong Kong, South Africa, Kenya, India, Saudi Arabia and the Maldives.

In 2003, I took my first general manager post at Kurland Hotel and Polo Club in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, subsequently moving into the same role with Mövenpick Jeddah Al Nawras in Saudi Arabia, Mövenpick Hotel & Spa Bangalore in India, and Oberwaid in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Then came the start of my journey in the Maldives as regional General Manager for Diamonds Athuruga and Diamonds Thudufushi Maldives in 2016, adding Sandies Bathala to the line-up in 2018. I moved to Dusit Thani Maldives in 2019 and for the last couple of months have been working at the stunning Alila Kothaifaru.

What were some of the significant challenges you faced during your 35 years in the hospitality industry, and how did you overcome them?

I have seen first-hand how the working world has changed over the years. When I first started my career, everything was done manually. We used paper files, calculators and typewriters. But over time, technology has changed the way we work. We now have access to powerful computers, the internet and a variety of software programs that can automate many tasks. We need to be able to use new technologies effectively, and we also need to be able to adapt to new ways of working.

Indeed, the working world is constantly changing, and it is important to be able to adapt to those changes. Being curious and open to new ideas can help us embrace change, and being a lifelong learner can help us stay ahead of the curve.

What do you think is the future of sustainable tourism in the Maldives, and how is Alila Kothaifaru adapting to these changes?

Sustainable tourism is important because it helps protect the environment and create a more sustainable future for tourism. Resorts in the Maldives are taking steps to become more sustainable by using energy-efficient technologies, reducing waste, conserving water and supporting local communities. These practices are not only good for the environment, but they can also be good for business. This will only become more prevalent in the next few years, especially amongst the younger guests in their 20s and 30s.

Guided by Alila’s sustainability commitment, we operate to rigorous EarthCheck environmental benchmarking standards and implement green initiatives involving all employees throughout the resort. Our efforts include using solar power, reducing waste going to the landfill, producing our own fresh drinking water through a water-bottling plant system, and much more.

That isn’t all, we also offer eco-tourism experiences and educational programs on marine and coral life, as well as the local flora and fauna. By incorporating sustainable practices into our operations, we believe we are not only helping to protect the environment but also enhancing the guest experience by offering unique, authentic and socially responsible travel experiences.

How does Alila Kothaifaru contribute to preserving local culture and traditions in the Maldives, and what experiences can guests expect during their stay?

local community through internship, employment and partnership opportunities. Having come across many skilled and passionate hoteliers on these islands, we know there is great talent to be found and nurtured. In addition, Alila Kothaifaru’s bespoke Alila Experiences, crafted with the local knowledge of our Maldivian Safeeru culture ambassador, contribute to preserving local culture and traditions while providing an authentic Maldivian experience for guests.

For example, “The Art of Coconut” was crafted to immerse guests in a unique cultural, artistic and culinary journey to understand why the coconut tree is revered as the Miracle Tree in the Maldives. In this experience, our local Safeeru hosts share Maldivian stories about the coconut tree that show how every aspect of it is used, whether in food, building materials, creating art or making coir ropes.

What makes Alila Kothaifaru stand out from other luxury resorts in the Maldives?

Restorative Retreat Designed at One with Nature

Not like typical tropical architecture in the Maldives, Alila Kothaifarus’s elegant minimalist architecture by Singapore-based Studiogoto encompasses terraced pavilions, villas and a treetop Spa Alila that are carefully integrated into the existing landscape to immerse guests in the picturesque natural surroundings. The low-rise structures and contemporary interiors feature open-air spaces and a calming palette of island-inspired colours and textures, creating an idyllic setting for complete relaxation and connection with nature. The resort is also built around the island’s natural landscape, conserving up to 70% of the existing vegetation and the maximum number of native trees.

Private Sandbank, The Shack

Our private sandbank, The Shack operates a restaurant and is known by locals as Korushi Giri. Guests dreaming of an ultimate castaway experience can set sail in a traditional Maldivian dhoni on a two- to three-hour journey around the Raa Atoll before returning to the resort’s private sandbank, The Shack, a secluded spot for a gourmet picnic, a sunset barbecue or a romantic candlelit dinner under the stars.

During the pandemic, I moved back to Bali as a General Manager, overseeing the pre-opening newest Banyan Tree brand, HOMM while also supporting Business Development Team in Indonesia.

What can we look forward to from Banyan Tree properties this year?

This year in the Maldives, we are dedicated to uplifting all aspects of Banyan Tree properties. Our focus is on enhancing guest experiences while preserving the elements that made us renowned over the years.

We are emphasizing improvements in our landscape, paying attention to detail in every corner while preserving the natural beauty of the existing plantations. Villa enhancements are also underway, including the addition of living rooms in our prime categories and the upgrading of the quality of woodwork, pools, and interior features.

Renovations are taking place in our spa facilities to enhance the guest experience. Our treatment rooms are being upgraded, with two already completed and Dhawa Ihuru officially rebranded and opened earlier this year. On the front-of-house side, we are revamping our food and beverage outlets to improve buffet presentation, and quality, and showcase unique local products. We are also redesigning the lounge area and opening a new bar called Sunset Jetty, offering guests a stunning sunset with a variety of Yakitori while swimming in our seawater pool experience.

The Banyan Tree Group is known to be a trailblazer in sustainable tourism. Will you tell us more about how you are incorporating sustainability into the operations of Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru Maldives and Dhawa Ihuru?

Sustainability is incorporated into everything we do daily. It is in the core of Banyan Tree Group DNA for a very long time. At the heart sustainability comes from all departments with the Green Team driving each new and existing project. The Team is made up of one representative from each department. We conduct monthly sustainability events aligned with international and/or global events, local community engagements, workshops for schools and mentorship programs.

Both Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Dhawa Ihuru have been Earth Check certified for seven years. We just recently completed our eighth annual audit.

We also have a Marine Lab dedicated to the preservation of our coral reef while educating our guests, including the very young ones, associates, and local communities on the current global and local problems coral reefs face. In fact, our Marine Lab is the first resort-based facility in the Maldives to provide basic facilities and equipment for fieldwork and to share the importance of marine conservation and sustainable livelihoods with local communities.

We continuously strive and better ourselves with sustainability within the resort and group-wide. We believe the business cannot succeed if our society and surrounding fail.

Your career in the hospitality space spans over 30 years. How do you think luxury travel has changed during this time?

Throughout my career, I have witnessed remarkable changes in the realm of luxury travel. Previously, luxury was often associated with older individuals possessing substantial wealth. However, in recent years, there has been a notable shift towards inclusivity and accessibility, allowing a broader demographic to indulge in luxury accommodations and travel experiences. It is now common to encounter guests under the age of 30 who possess the means and desire to enjoy the finer aspects of travel. The demand for luxury has steadily grown, resulting in the expansion of renowned luxury brands. In the Maldives, a destination where we have played a pioneering role in luxury hospitality, we have observed remarkable progress, with approximately 40% to 50% of the 170 resorts or hotels classified as luxury properties. Looking ahead, the future of the luxury sector appears highly promising, with the continuous emergence of new luxury hotels and a thriving market awaiting exploration.

Having worked in various locations such as the US, Asia, and the Middle East, how would you describe the unique characteristics of the Maldivian tourism landscape?

I have had the opportunity to observe and understand the unique characteristics of the Maldivian tourism landscape. The landscape has evolved to possess its own distinct features that set it apart. Having been involved in the industry for the past three decades, particularly with Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Dhawa Ihuru, we have successfully identified the essence of what makes the Maldives truly special.

However, our focus now lies in effectively conveying these unique aspects to the younger generation, igniting their interest, and motivating them to personally experience the wonders of the Maldives. Visitors to this breathtaking destination seek more than just the pristine white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. They long to immerse themselves in the authentic Maldivian way of life.

What advice do you have for aspiring hoteliers?

For aspiring hoteliers, my advice is to embrace the opportunities that the hospitality industry offers, especially for those who enjoy travelling and working in different locations. While hospitality may not be seen as a traditional career choice, it provides incredible prospects for individuals who have a passion for exploring new places. The industry allows for potential work opportunities in various countries and regions throughout your career, giving you a global perspective and diverse cultural experiences.

Idu Ribeiro

General Manager at W Maldives

Our team had the privilege of interviewing Idu, a highly accomplished hospitality professional with over 26 years of experience. As the General Manager of W Maldives, Idu’s remarkable career journey has taken him from Brazil to the United States and eventually to his current role in one of the world’s most extraordinary luxury resorts.

Could you tell us about your career thus far?

I started off my career path in the hospitality industry when I studied Hotel I started my career in the hospitality industry when I studied Hotel Management and Business Administration in my home country, Brazil. I then moved to the US for my first-ever hospitality job as a Valet Parking attendant at the Marriott Vacation Club Boston Custom House. This role propelled me to assume various leadership roles in many different areas, where eventually I became a Director of Operations and then attained my first General Manager role at the age of 34.

What I believe contributed to my development up to this point in my career is the unwavering commitment to never give up under any circumstances. It is crucial to persist and maintain focus on your desired achievements, break down barriers and persevere towards success. This year marks my 26th year working in the industry, and my professional journey has taken me to see the world through six countries across three continents.

Being voted one of the Top 5 Best GMs in the Maldives, how do you foster teamwork and collaboration among your staff to ensure seamless operations and a cohesive guest experience?

First of all, it is truly an honour to be recognized as the Best General Manager in the Maldives by Travel + Leisure 2023 Asia Pacific Luxury Awards. Also, Maldives as one of the top luxury destinations in the world has definitely attracted the best talents there are in the industry, and I am truly humbled and proud to be recognized with this accolade, but what I am most happy for is really for my team at W Maldives. You can’t be recognized as the best General Manager if you don’t have the best team behind you—and I definitely have the best one as they always go all in to support and work towards our goals and commitments. Teamwork and collaboration are at the heart of our day-to-day routines, this is indeed important especially when you are working in a remote island.

Being a hands-on leader and through my years of experience and my capability to adapt, I based my leadership on setting clear communication and strategies and put my trust in my team to execute those strategies while giving them room to explore and develop their talents. I also truly believe that people make a difference and that guest expectations are met within the small details of the services that we provide. Positive guest experience has always been and will always be our main objective as a team. This is what has been instilled in every talent in our team here at W Maldives.

Balancing guest delight and business success is crucial. How do you strike the right balance at W Maldives?

Getting the right balance of guest delight and business success starts by taking care of my team. The core value of our company—“We take care of our associates, so our associates will take care of our guests, and guests will come back and recommend us to others.”—is really the secret ingredient of what we do. This may be quite cliché, but when you really bring this to every action you can and in your daily business practices, this value will indeed become a mantra that can make the impossible, possible.

Another important thing is also at the hiring stage of your team members— you always need to hire the right person for the right position. However this will really only account for 50% of the success in striking the balance. The rest of it comes in cultivating the team you have through training, development, and motivation. Having the right team in place is definitely fundamental to going through adversities and overcoming challenges towards our goals.

Finally, having the right plan and strategy is key. As it is the road map that will guide and maintain your focus in the right directions whilst also maintaining certain flexibilities to adapt, adjust and change quickly as the wind never blows in the same direction and you will always need to adjust the sail!

What measures have you implemented to ensure that W Maldives remains a preferred choice for luxury travellers?

We have seen that there has been a shift in the definition of luxury travel. It is no longer just about providing a physical embodiment of luxury, but more of the intangible sense and personal experience. It is more important than ever to focus on guests’ expectations and understand how to place your product and services to attract the right customers. For us, we do this by going beyond what is expected. We ensure that every guest who stays with us departs with memorable moments that last.

W Hotels is an active brand that gives each property the freedom to activate and live out its passions. At W Maldives, we ensure that our weekly programming offers a variety of experiences to cater to our guests’ interests and highlight their passions. Additionally, reinforcing operations skills for the team to deliver a high level of service and create meaningful connections with guests is also important. Through the training and development of each team member, they will understand the flow of guests’ journey and will therefore be able to provide the right service at the right time and place.

Sustainability and environmental stewardship are important in the Maldives. How does W Maldives prioritize these values in its operations?

Sustainability plays an important role in our daily operations, especially Sustainability plays an important role in our daily operations, especially since our resort also hosts one of the best house reefs in the country— we have to take extra measures to ensure that our operations have the minimum impact on our surroundings. We have for years been implementing a no-plastic bottle policy as well as removing single-use amenities. Our hot water supply is provided through a recycling process from our chillers and we are looking towards implementing solar energy in the future for cleaner energy solutions.

Apart from that rigorous recycling initiatives are taking place every day at W Maldives ensuring that we minimize waste as much as possible. This idea of sustainability is also applied to our collaborations with other parties like our exclusive merchandise with Mazu resort wear brand, where we present a collection of shorts and rash guards that are made with recycled plastic bottles.

Additionally, for our food consumption, we always strive to make purchases of local fish and support the Maldivian fishing community that surrounds our resort. We also ensure that the fishing methods are also sustainable through line-caught fish and catch of the day.

Looking ahead, what are your future plans or goals for W Maldives?

Moving forward and going into the future I envision creating an even more inclusive, engaged, and diverse space within the team with the objective of providing the best guest experience there is. Also, W as a brand is also undergoing an evolution—we have always been driven by a spirit of reinvention and new/next philosophy. That said, we are actually turning our views inwards to evolve for the next generation of luxury travellers.

Digitalisation, Technology and the Future of Travel

Technological advancements are reshaping industries and societies, ushering in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. One sector that has embraced digitalisation early on is tourism, revolutionizing the way people plan, experience, and engage with travel.

Digitalisation is expected to continue propelling the travel experience on its trajectory towards becoming more seamless and convenient. Some major impacts on the sector as a whole are the development of smart travel facilitation, smart destinations, positive impacts on the environment, and a new wave of job profiles.

Smart Destinations

Smart destinations are at the forefront of tourism transformation, integrating technology, innovation, sustainability, accessibility, and inclusivity throughout the entire tourism cycle. These destinations consider the needs of both residents and tourists, incorporating multilingualism, cultural nuances, and seasonality into their planning. By harnessing data analytics, smart destinations make informed decisions, prioritize resources, and offer seamless experiences to visitors while managing local resources efficiently. They also foster inclusive governance structures that represent public and private stakeholders, ensuring maximum accessibility and analyzing sustainable tourism management from multiple perspectives.

Smart Travel Facilitation

Digitalisation has enabled the development of a comprehensive smart travel model that encompasses various aspects of the travel process. From smart visas and streamlined border control to enhanced security processes and infrastructure, technology is making travel more efficient and secure. Passengers can now book flights, check in, and store boarding passes on their smartphones. Automated clearance gates and electronic boarding pass validation further simplify the travel experience, saving time and reducing potential bottlenecks.

Positive Environmental Impact Job Creation

The integration of technology into tourism necessitates a shift in the industry’s workforce. While automation may transform certain travel jobs or render them obsolete, it also generates new employment opportunities. Digital transformation demands a skilled workforce capable of implementing and managing smart initiatives. The sector’s future jobs will require a combination of technical expertise and advanced soft skills. Startups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) play a crucial role in driving technology-based innovation and entrepreneurship in tourism. Strengthening these enterprises and promoting technology and skills-based education, training, and policies will foster innovation and create decent employment opportunities.

Digitalisation has revolutionized the tourism industry, enhancing travel experiences, promoting sustainability, and creating new employment prospects. Smart travel facilitation has made the journey seamless and secure, while smart destinations integrate technology, innovation, and inclusivity to offer exceptional experiences to visitors. The industry must embrace the opportunities provided by digitalization, supporting startups and MSMEs to fuel innovation and foster a skilled workforce. By doing so, we can ensure benefits to all stakeholders, driving the sector towards sustainable growth and development.

Digitalisation holds the potential for significant environmental benefits within the tourism industry. Innovations in manufacturing, smart assets, and resource efficiency contribute to reducing the industry’s ecological footprint. For example, technology-based data tools, including remote sensors and big data management systems, help destination managers understand the impact of seasonality on tourism and sustainability. By predicting and managing tourist flows more effectively, destinations can mitigate the negative effects of overcrowding and enhance visitor experiences while preserving natural and cultural resources.

By prioritizing personalized interactions, hoteliers enhance the guest experience, driving positive word-of-mouth recommendations and cultivating lasting relationships.

Amplifying Authenticity through User-Generated Content

User-generated content (UGC), including guest reviews, photos, and videos, wields tremendous influence in shaping perceptions and driving bookings. Encouraging guests to share their experiences and tag the hotel’s social media handles allows hoteliers to amplify their reach and benefit from authentic endorsements. Sharing UGC not only enhances credibility but also strengthens the emotional bond between the hotel and its guests.

The Future of Personalization in the Travel Industry: Leveraging AI and Machine Learning

The travel industry has always been focused on providing exceptional experiences to customers. In today’s marketplace, offering personalized services and experiences has become a key factor for success. According to Smart Insights, more than half of customers are likely to stop buying from brands that use poor personalization tactics. To stay ahead of the competition, travel brands are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to deliver highly personalized and seamless travel experiences.

AI and ML technologies have revolutionized the way travel companies operate by enabling them to analyse vast amounts of data and make real-time decisions. By leveraging AI and ML, travel brands can better understand their customers’ preferences, anticipate their needs, and provide tailored recommendations and offers. Here are some key areas where AI and ML are transforming the future of personalization in the travel industry.

Enhanced Customer Experience

AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can provide personalized assistance to travellers throughout their journey. These intelligent systems can understand natural language, answer queries, and offer recommendations based on individual preferences and travel history. This level of personalization enhances the overall customer experience and helps build stronger relationships with travellers.

Tailored Travel Recommendations

AI algorithms can analyse customer data, including past bookings, preferences, and online behaviour, to create personalized travel recommendations. By understanding individual preferences for destinations, accommodations, activities, and dining, travel brands can curate customized itineraries that cater to each traveller’s unique interests and needs.

Dynamic Pricing and Offers

AI and ML algorithms can analyse market trends, historical data, and customer behaviour to optimize pricing strategies. By dynamically adjusting prices based on demand and supply, travel companies can offer competitive rates to customers while maximizing their own revenue. Additionally, AI-powered systems can provide personalized offers and discounts to individual customers, increasing the likelihood of bookings and customer loyalty.

Smart Itinerary Management

AI can assist travellers in managing their itineraries by providing real-time updates on flight delays, gate changes, and other relevant information. By integrating AI with travel apps and platforms, travellers can receive personalized notifications and recommendations based on their preferences and travel plans. This level of assistance and convenience enhances the overall travel experience and reduces stress for travellers.

Facial Recognition for Seamless Travel

AI-driven facial recognition technology is being used to enhance security and streamline various processes within the travel industry. From check-in and boarding to security checkpoints and immigration, facial recognition systems can expedite the travel process while maintaining high levels of security and personalization.

The adoption of AI and ML in the travel industry is still in its early stages, but the potential for transformative impact is significant. While some sectors have been quicker to adopt AI, such as financial services and automotive industries, the travel industry is catching up rapidly. The advancements in AI and ML technologies enable travel companies to process vast amounts of data, gain valuable insights, and deliver personalized experiences at scale.

However, it is important to strike a balance between automation and maintaining the human touch in the travel industry. While AI and ML can offer remarkable personalization, the human element and genuine interactions are essential for creating memorable travel experiences.

The result is a paradise where guests can emotionally and intellectually connect with the complex ecosystems they inhabit.

The design of the resort embraces the distinct ecological zones of Vommuli Island: the lagoon, the beach, the jungle, and the coastal areas. Drawing inspiration from the unique features of each zone, the architecture seamlessly blends elements from the natural and manmade environments.

During the construction phase, WOW Architects prioritised minimising environmental impact and reducing logistics and labour requirements. The resort’s pre-fabricated timber system was chosen for its sustainability and eco-awareness. This technology, utilising renewable resources, minimised the use of concrete and steel. Cross-laminated wood technology played a pivotal role in expressing the resort’s commitment to the environment while creating captivating architectural forms.

LAGOON ZONE

The Lagoon Zone at St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort is a captivating haven inspired by the abundant marine life thriving in the area. Drawing inspiration from the graceful form of manta rays, the neighbouring overwater villas exude elegance with their distinctive cephalic lobes. Maldives 50 Years of Tourism: A Review

“Maldives 50 Years of Tourism” takes readers on a captivating journey through the history and development of tourism in the Maldives, showcasing the transformation of this pristine archipelago into a world-renowned island paradise. Written with a blend of informative storytelling and insightful analysis, the book offers a comprehensive overview of the key milestones, challenges, and innovations that have shaped the Maldives’ tourism industry over the past five decades.

The book begins by delving into the pre-tourism era, highlighting the groundbreaking efforts of Dr. Hans Hass, an Austrian filmmaker, who introduced the mesmerizing beauty of the Maldives to the Western world through his underwater expeditions. Dr. Hass’ expeditions, coupled with the publication of “In the

56

Kingdom of a Thousand Atolls” by I. Eibl-Eibesfeldt, generated immense interest among divers, eager to explore the untouched coral reefs of the Maldives.

The narrative then transitions to the emergence of the Maldives as the newest island paradise in the 1970s. The crystal-clear blue waters and diverse marine life attracted divers from around the globe. Despite the challenges of isolation and limited accessibility, tourists flocked to the Maldives, drawn by the allure of sun, sea, sand, and solitude.

To address social and cultural conflicts, the Maldives implemented the innovative concept of one-island-one resort, where each hotel occupies an entire island. This model not only ensured a more sustainable approach to tourism but also garnered international recognition. Furthermore, the book highlights the implementation of new environmental and quality standards, such as desalination and solar water heating, which significantly improved the guest experience while minimizing the ecological impact.

The Maldives’ quest for redefining luxury in the third decade of tourism is another pivotal aspect covered in the book. Exquisite dining experiences on sandy beaches under the stars, exclusive privacy, and rejuvenating spa treatments amidst nature revolutionized the concept of luxury tourism. Renowned hotel brands like Four Seasons, One and Only, and Hilton contributed to this transformation through major refurbishments of older resorts, offering guests unparalleled experiences.

The fourth decade of Maldivian tourism showcases the industry’s resilience in the face of various challenges. From the aftermath of 9/11 and the SARS outbreak to the impact of the Asian Tsunami and the global financial crisis, the Maldives endured and bounced back stronger than ever. The government’s policy changes regarding guesthouse registration led to the exploration of guesthouse tourism on inhabited islands, diversifying the offerings beyond resort-based experiences.

The fifth decade of tourism witnessed the Maldives ascending to new heights of opulence and exclusivity. Billionaires sought to create the world’s most luxurious resorts, driving investor confidence through longterm lease agreements and transparent land rent regulations. The Maldives became a playground for high-net-worth individuals, featuring underwater spas, undersea residences, private islands, and unparalleled culinary experiences. The competition among luxury hotel chains to establish a presence in the Maldives led to the rapid development of cutting-edge resorts, each vying for the title of the “coolest” destination.

“Maldives 50 Years of Tourism” masterfully captures the captivating evolution of the Maldives’ tourism industry. Through vivid descriptions and insightful analysis, readers gain a deep appreciation for the natural beauty, innovative practices, and resilience that have made the Maldives a world-class destination. This book is a mustread for anyone seeking to explore the fascinating story behind the rise of this iconic island paradise.

Maldives Resort Architecture: 50 Years of Island Resorts: A Review

“Maldives Resort Architecture: 50 Years of Island Resorts” provides a captivating exploration of the architectural evolution that has shaped the Maldivian resort landscape over the past five decades. Written and illustrated by Mauroof Jameel, an esteemed architect, illustrator, and researcher, this book offers a comprehensive overview of the design and construction trends that have defined the Maldives’ iconic island resorts.

The book begins by highlighting the paradigm shift introduced by tourism in 1972, which revolutionized the concept of habitation on the islands. Living on or near the beach, and later over and underwater, became a new way of appreciating the natural environment of the Maldives. The “one island, one resort” concept, initiated in 1972, provided tourists with a utopian enclave where they could experience the idyllic charm of tropical island living. Over time, the humble vernacular settings of early resorts gave way to a more complex and diverse range of architectural styles and designs that the Maldives is renowned for today.

Through a combination of engaging text and captivating illustrations, the book traces the historical evolution of resort architecture in the Maldives, dividing it into five thematically distinct decades. Readers are taken on a journey through the milestones, design approaches, construction techniques, and notable architects that have contributed to the rich architectural narrative of the Maldivian resorts.

In the early stages, resort designs were often undertaken by local designers without the involvement of professional architects or engineers. This era was marked by experimentation and trials, with two distinct trajectories emerging: one inspired by existing vernacular styles and the other embracing newer construction materials and methods. These design approaches continued to evolve and shape contemporary resort aesthetics.

The book highlights key design elements that have left a lasting impact on the Maldivian resort architecture. The introduction of semi-open-air toilets, designed in the gifili style, and the first water bungalows created by architect Ahmed Saleem in 1984 and 1987, respectively, marked a new era of innovation and design.

The book highlights key design elements that have left a lasting impact on the Maldivian resort architecture. The introduction of semi open air toilets designed in the gifii style and the first water bunglows

The 1990s witnessed the emergence of luxury and spa resorts, along with the expansion of islands through reclamation and large-scale over-water developments. Paradise Island Resort, designed by Tekton Design Pvt Ltd in 1994, set new standards, raising the overall quality

of resorts. The concept of “eco-luxury” was pioneered by Sonevafushi in 1995, while architect Mohamed Shafeeg (Sappe’) introduced the concept of luxury vernacular in Kuda Huraa in 1996. The construction of underwater structures and the creation of artificially shaped reclaimed resort islands represented significant milestones during this period.

As the Maldivian tourism industry progressed, there was a greater emphasis on high fashion and scenic design, often involving international luxury hotel management chains. Responsible and sustainable design and management practices gained prominence, with the first fully solar-powered resort, Gasfinolhu, designed in 2015. However, the book also highlights the negative impact of excessive reef consumption and the transplantation of mature trees in the Male’ region, caused by reclaimed artificial islands.

Mauroof Jameel, the author and illustrator of the book, brings over 30 years of experience in architecture, teaching, and management. His expertise and deep understanding of the Maldives’ architectural heritage are evident throughout the book. With his previous work on the coral stone mosques of the Maldives, Jameel has established himself as a leading authority in the field. Through his insightful commentary and intricate illustrations, he provides readers with a comprehensive exploration of the architectural legacy of the Maldives’ island resorts.

“Maldives Resort Architecture: 50 Years of Island Resorts” is a must-read for architecture enthusiasts, researchers, and anyone.

Marriott International’s Key Strategies for Regenerative Travel: Empowering Guests Towards Sustainability

In a recent study conducted by Booking.com, it was revealed that 76% of travellers express a desire to travel more sustainably in the next 12 months, with 66% aiming to leave the places they visit in a better condition than when they arrived.

However, the path to sustainable travel is often hindered by perceived barriers, such as the belief that sustainable options are too expensive (49% of respondents) and a lack of knowledge regarding where to find such options (56% of respondents).

Recognizing these challenges, Marriott International advocates for a comprehensive approach to regenerative travel, making sustainability accessible and actionable for hotel guests. The company has distilled their approach into key areas, as highlighted below.

Integrating Sustainability into Hotel Operations

Sustainability lies at the core of Marriott International’s business strategy, permeating every aspect from hotel design to the guest experience. Demonstrating this commitment, the Marriott Bonvoy™ portfolio of resorts in the Maldives implements numerous environmental, oceanic, and community initiatives. At Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa the hydroponic gardens and a thriving greenhouse program encourages guests to witness and engage with the beauty of nature and learn about the resort’s efforts to protect it, followed by a unique dining experience featuring freshly harvested ingredients.

W Maldives has partnered with cutting-edge Hong Kong swimwear label Mazu Resortwear to create exclusive prints with a bold message in mind. Made out of salvaged plastic bottles, the limited-edition swimwear collection is stealing the scene in style and is inspired by the team’s commitment to saving the ocean since 2021. In addition, all of Marriott Bonvoy’s seven resorts in the Maldives have implemented refillable bath amenities, to reduce plastic waste.

Setting Clear and Measurable Sustainability Targets

Marriott International’s sustainability and social impact platform, Serve360: Doing Good in Every Direction, serves as a comprehensive framework for the company’s sustainable efforts. Committed to reducing its global carbon, water, and waste footprints, Marriott International has established ambitious 2025 targets. Moreover, the company has made a significant commitment to set science-based targets and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, further reinforcing its sustainability initiatives.

82

Empowering Guests to Make a Positive Impact

Marriott International leads the way in Asia Pacific with the innovative program “Good Travel with Marriott Bonvoy™.” This program enables guests to engage in meaningful travel experiences across three distinct pillars: Environmental Protection, Community Engagement, and Marine Conservation. With close to 100 participating hotels, the initiative allows guests to contribute meaningfully to the destinations they visit. For example, The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort offers guests the opportunity to support and promote the traditional art of lacquer, helping preserve the cultural heritage of Liyelaa Jehun. At Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, guests can participate in the Adopt a Coral initiative, engaging in coral-fragment plantation activities to support reef habitats. Committed to environmental education, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands’Ambassadors of the Environment program led by Jean-Michel Cousteau, a team of marine naturalists and leading global scientists, provides unique experiences for both adults and children with the preservation of our planet at its core.

Cultivating a Culture of Giving Back

“Serve Our World” represents one of Marriott International’s core values, and the company is dedicated to making a positive impact in the communities where it operates. Marriott’s hotels and associates worldwide actively engage in volunteerism, fundraising, cash and in-kind donations to support local causes. Recently, the Marriott International Maldives Apprenticeship Program was launched in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment and the Maldives Institute of Technology (MIT). This program aims to train and develop the youth of Maldives, providing them with opportunities in the hospitality industry. To further foster sustainability, Marriott International challenges its hotels to establish internal sustainability committees, creating a culture of accountability and driving positive change.

By adopting a 360 approach to regenerative travel, Marriott International demonstrates its commitment to sustainability, empowering guests to make a positive impact and contributing to the communities it serves. As the world celebrates World Environment Day, Marriott International encourages travellers and industry stakeholders to embrace sustainable practices and collectively build a better future.

Baros Maldives Debuts New Hub for Marine Environment Awareness

Baros Maldives launched a new online section to raise awareness about the fragile marine environment, in addition to the island resort’s current sustainable tourism programmes. As the world celebrates Earth Day, Baros remains committed to promoting sustainable tourism, having been actively engaged in coral restoration and planting since 2006 to combat the adverse effects of rising water temperatures on corals.

Guests can participate in the coral restoration project by sponsoring coral frames, and the island resort employs a range of techniques to promote growth, including the use of nursery-like pools, suspended lines in the blue lagoon, the renowned Baros coral cubes and personalised frames with name tags and love messages. To date, 458 coral frames have been sponsored.

As part of its upcoming 50th-anniversary celebrations later this year in December, the Divers Baros Maldives team, known as the “Baros Underwater Ambassadors,” has shared their favourite underwater stories, highlighting the island resort’s sustainability initiatives and other valuable insights.

86

The Baros underwater ambassadors are passionate about educating guests on good water practices and spreading knowledge on sustainable tourism through the newly launched information hub. The dedicated section features entertaining short stories that provide valuable knowledge in an educational and playful way, revolving around marine flora and fauna, characteristics of resident marine creatures such as the story of Finny, the resident black-tipped shark, and the natural order of things underwater.

The short stories generate awareness about the etiquettes of snorkelling and diving and provide readers with insights on parallels with current sustainability movements such as circular economy efforts. The platform also includes practical tips for divers and snorkellers, such as diving slowly and avoiding touching the reef and marine creatures like Manta Rays, which helps preserve their habitats and ensure their survival.

The Baros underwater ambassadors present a diverse range of information on the fragile marine ecosystem, its interconnectedness, and the natural balance that

can easily be disrupted due to human behaviour. Guests can read these stories and experiences on the Baros website under each Baros underwater ambassador’s profile, bringing with them a topic close to their hearts and lobbying for sustainable measures in the underwater world surrounding their topics.

At Baros, guests can explore these topics further with the underwater ambassadors while enjoying a range of marine activities, from coral cube planting to guided tours of snorkelling and diving at the worldclass Baros house reef and other exclusive reefs teeming with rich marine life. The private island resort has also implemented eco-friendly practices to reduce its environmental impact, such as replacing plastic straws with paper straws, banning plastic bags, and using glass water and refreshment bottles that are reused for multiple fillings. Baros remains committed to continued progress in terms of sustainability, improving its services one step at a time.

“This brings us joy to share that since 2018, all three resorts have received this esteemed recognition. We would not have achieved it without the love and support of our guests. We are grateful and inspired to continue providing them with a better experience when staying at Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, Dhawa Ihuru and Angsana Velavaru,” shares Judy Ong, Director of Sales and Marketing.

Ronalaine Fernandez Sato, MarCom and PR Manager added: “It brings us joy to share this wonderful news.

Earning the 2023 TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award, more so for 5 consecutive years, is a testament to our commitment and dedication towards excellence in guest experience and heart-warming hospitality, which the Banyan Tree Group embodies.”

Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru is a luxury barefoot tropical paradise at the heart of North Male’ Atoll, 25 minutes away from Velana International Airport via speedboat. With 48 pool villas dotting the island, privacy and relaxation can easily be attained.

Situated approximately two-minute away via speedboat from Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru lies Dhawa Ihuru, formerly known as Angsana Ihuru, a distinct island retreat of its own with 45 villas, and dubbed as “one of the best house reefs” in the Maldives.

Angsana Velavaru, known as “Turtle Island” in the Dhivehi language, and the first to have an exclusive collection of water villas in the Maldives, is perched on a private lagoon in the virtually untouched South Nilandhe Atoll.
