It’s the Summer Big To-Do Issue! I’ve packed the inside full of cool and amazing things to do in and around Salem and the Willamette Valley. Holy Cow, you guys, there is a TON to do this summer. With the temperatures climbing, all the splash pads are full of giggles and bright swimsuits and happy Oregon kiddos. The county fair is right around the corner, and Summer Reading programs have popped up at all the area libraries.

GENTLE ways to help your child
handle hitting &

When we first imagine bringing a child

3. Enforcing punishments, consequences, or rewarding “good” behavior - all of these activate lower-functioning brain regions, missing the wise pre-frontal area of the brain that can self-reflect and make different choices in moments of distress.
A hard reality can crash down on us when this picture is interrupted by any number of unexpected events: a difficult birth, a baby who can’t seem to be soothed, or the child who makes a habit out of biting, hitting, or banging their head when their emotions take over. The last scenario - acts of aggressiveness from the little being we only ever imagined loving us - creates an interesting and sometimes seemingly unsolvable paradox, as our instincts trigger us to protect ourselves against the physical threat.
What to try instead: Use nonverbal communication to show what you want to happen next. This might look like changing the position of your body, as peacefully as possible holding your child’s hands or feet, or getting in between your child and whoever or whatever else they are harming. Sometimes children simply want attention and don’t understand how to access that in a positive way, and you can offer a hug or other form of attention and let them know they can ask you for it anytime they feel like hitting, biting, etc.
Here are three common reactions to managing aggression from our children, why they may not be working to solve the problem, and three responses to try instead.

x, y, or z. Do you want me to help you do this?” As in #1 above, the most effective option is often a nurturing, soothing hug or other moment where you can give your attention to them.
this reactive state and provide your desired parenting response to your child’s behavior. It can help to remember that your first action is focused on getting everyone safe.
Validate your child’s internal experience and provide a safe, healthy alternative to the aggressive action.
Children can only learn in a calm, balanced state, and therefore immediate disciplinary action is not required. It can be much more effective to help everyone (including yourself ) cool down before attempting to teach new behavior.
Children who act out in aggressive ways often have an underlying need for either attention or are having a hard time regulating their emotional or physical state (hungry, tired, upset, or even excited, for example). These are not negative problems, but rather a sign that they are trying to find a healthy way to get help regulating from their trusted caregiver.
While not an all-inclusive list, these are helpful starting points from which to find the right-fit approach that works for your child and your family. Parenting isn’t a one-size fits all.
Research on the human nervous system has shown that children’s self-regulating capacity continues to develop through age 5-7, and in addition, the “wise” pre-frontal area of the brain develops through age 25-27. We cannot expect immature nervous and neurological systems to manage on their own. Our job as parents is to understand how this system works and provide parenting that nurtures their development.
