GENTLE ways to help your child

handle hitting &

AGGRESSION by Jenifer Trivelli M.S.

When we first imagine bringing a child

2. Returning aggression with aggression - it can reinforce (“wire up”) your child’s aggressive reactions.

into our lives, the scene is often serene wind gently rippling our hair and white cotton dress as we stand in a sunshiny field of soft grass, watching our child frolic with delight in their discovery of the world around them.

3. Enforcing punishments, consequences, or rewarding “good” behavior - all of these activate lower-functioning brain regions, missing the wise pre-frontal area of the brain that can self-reflect and make different choices in moments of distress.

A hard reality can crash down on us when this picture is interrupted by any number of unexpected events: a difficult birth, a baby who can’t seem to be soothed, or the child who makes a habit out of biting, hitting, or banging their head when their emotions take over. The last scenario - acts of aggressiveness from the little being we only ever imagined loving us - creates an interesting and sometimes seemingly unsolvable paradox, as our instincts trigger us to protect ourselves against the physical threat.

What to try instead: Use nonverbal communication to show what you want to happen next. This might look like changing the position of your body, as peacefully as possible holding your child’s hands or feet, or getting in between your child and whoever or whatever else they are harming. Sometimes children simply want attention and don’t understand how to access that in a positive way, and you can offer a hug or other form of attention and let them know they can ask you for it anytime they feel like hitting, biting, etc.

Here are three common reactions to managing aggression from our children, why they may not be working to solve the problem, and three responses to try instead.

Meet aggressive behavior with peaceful, yet firm, boundary setting and redirection to wire a new pattern in your child’s developing brain.

Common reactions that don’t typically solve the problem:

You can say “Ouch! That hurts and I’m not going to let you hurt me (them, that, etc). When you feel this way, you can

1. Saying STOP - it’s an unreasonable demand on a developing brain.

x, y, or z. Do you want me to help you do this?” As in #1 above, the most effective option is often a nurturing, soothing hug or other moment where you can give your attention to them.

this reactive state and provide your desired parenting response to your child’s behavior. It can help to remember that your first action is focused on getting everyone safe.

Validate your child’s internal experience and provide a safe, healthy alternative to the aggressive action.

Children can only learn in a calm, balanced state, and therefore immediate disciplinary action is not required. It can be much more effective to help everyone (including yourself ) cool down before attempting to teach new behavior.

Children who act out in aggressive ways often have an underlying need for either attention or are having a hard time regulating their emotional or physical state (hungry, tired, upset, or even excited, for example). These are not negative problems, but rather a sign that they are trying to find a healthy way to get help regulating from their trusted caregiver.

While not an all-inclusive list, these are helpful starting points from which to find the right-fit approach that works for your child and your family. Parenting isn’t a one-size fits all.

Research on the human nervous system has shown that children’s self-regulating capacity continues to develop through age 5-7, and in addition, the “wise” pre-frontal area of the brain develops through age 25-27. We cannot expect immature nervous and neurological systems to manage on their own. Our job as parents is to understand how this system works and provide parenting that nurtures their development.

Give yourself grace and get support from trusted help as you navigate the solutions that work best for your family. It can be challenging to manage your own internal reaction to being bitten, punched, or otherwise hurt by your child. The brain releases a cascade of chemicals and hormones designed to help you defend or run away from the perceived threat. It’s important to recognize this is happening and build your own “Wise Mind” muscle to manage
