Edelkoort Exhibitions deepens this development in several designs using pleating, smocking, folding, wrapping, layering, ribboning and draping. The results constitute a hybrid between contemporary creativity and domestic craft. The exhibition’s title, Gathering, underlines a plea for humans to overcome tendencies such as greed and lack of respect. Craafts is a company specialising in craftsmanship for haute couture. Having worked with names like Prada, Gucci, Celine and Alexander McQueen, Craafts realized that its techniques could also be adapted for the furniture industry. Craafts will display a variety of handmade items featuring diverse techniques and materials in an iron-framework installation.

This increased interest goes hand in hand with another tendency: the intermingling of the design and fashion industries. Ventura Lambrate exhibitors such as Edelkoort Exhibitions and Craafts draw on contemporary craftsmanship and traditional techniques that are applicable for both furniture and fashion, reshaping both fields.

The two textile designers of Studio Gutedort have a strong interest in working with unconventional and waste materials. They acquire one of their key materials at the butcher’s, walking away with intestines they’ll use to create leather like pieces. At Ventura Lambrate they’ll also present a research project based on the potential uses of beetroot dye. ??In the Burnt Sienna project, Studio Laura Daza works with a yellow pigment that becomes reddish-brown when heated. The artisan colour technique was widely used in the Renaissance, and the contemporary design studio is reviving it.?? A collaboration between designer Paolo Ulian and Bufalini Marmi has yielded a series of furniture pieces that make use of optimised marble techniques. The exhibition also features the 40x40 collection: marble tiles, cut by a water-jet machine, that can be easily assembled into objects. The special cutting technique means no waste material is left behind.?

Dust is the main material in Lucie Libotte’s designs, which re-evaluate a substance that’s usually perceived as dirty. After collecting samples of dust from several households, she’s created a series of vessels, each telling the story of the dust’s original location and explaining its value as a material. ?? Design studio Handmade Industrials sculpts its objects by using balloons as flexible moulds and filling them with biodegradable thermoplastic granules. These Made&Mold techniques, which reclaim industrial materials and borrow processes from the plastic-moulding industry, can be seen first-hand at Ventura Lambrate.

Dezeen promotion: submissions are now being accepted to exhibit at contemporary design show V entura Lambrate during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile event in Milan next April. Ventura Lambrate 2015 is set to run from April 14 to 19 in the Lambrate area of Milan, Italy, and will be curated by Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings of Dutch company Organisation in Design.

Next year's showcase will focus on the intersection between science, design and social progress, and will also place an emphasis on projects that intertwine design and fashion.

Ventura Lambrate give special call to design labels

Dutch company Organisation in Design is calling for exhibitors to show at Ventura Lambrate 2015 during the Salone del Mobile design fair in Milan next April. This edition, a special call goes out to design labels to apply with exceptional projects and daring installations.

This edition there will be a special call going out to brands and labels. Ventura Lambrate invites labels to present a thought-provoking project at the coming edition. The spacious industrial halls and elegant galleries of Ventura Lambrate are unique locations for stunning installations and revolutionary design ideas.

Ventura Lambrate will take place from April 14 to 19, 2015 in the inspiring post-industrial Lambrate area, situated north east of the city and well connected to the other key spots of Milan Fuorisalone.

Because anything is possible at Ventura Lambrate, it functions as a stage for exceptionally creative projects and presentations of great impact.

This fully-curated district shows the newest developments in contemporary design and brings a platform for business opportunities. Organisation in Design will again organise and curate the event. Designers, design studios, academies, collectives, cultural institutions, galleries and museums, design labels and creative brands are invited to apply.

Each April, the design world eagerly descends on Milan for the annual Salone del Mobile. Commonly referred to as “the Olympics of design,” this weeklong fete welcomes established and emerging designers, galleries, brands, schools, and other various institutions to present their latest achievements. It’s an exciting time, to be sure. The sheer number of presenters can be daunting, but for those scouting rising-star talent, the multilayered Lambrate district has emerged as a must-see hotspot, commanding attention amid the flurry of activity.

This year marks the sixth installment of Ventura Lambrate. Situated in the eastern part of Milan, the large-scale exhibition is almost like a small design city all unto itself—a mix of presentations by educational institutions, in-the-know experts, and young designers sharing their wares for the very first time. 2015’s event will feature more schools than ever before (24 at last count), and a variety of shows focused on experimental processes, the merging of industrial and handicraft, and the ongoing intermingling of the creative disciplines, among other investigations. According to Ventura Lambrate co-founder and art director Margriet Vollenberg, “This edition resembles exactly what Ventura Lambrate stands for—we’ve again brought together a great mix of different kinds of exhibitors, and the projects that deepen the most recent developments in design are numerous.” L'AB had the pleasure of perusing several of this year’s upcoming presenters. Here, we happily share our picks for VL 2015’s don’t-you-dare-miss-this exhibitions. Enjoy!

Fashion-Design Fusion A handful of shows promise to explore the fading boundaries between fashion and design, honing in on overlapping techniques as well as material and color investigations. Standouts on our radar? Noted trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort and co-curator Philip Fimmano will present Gathering: From Domestic Craft to Contemporary Process, an exhibition of 20 chairs by various designers created by “pleating, smocking, folding, wrapping, layering, ribboning, and draping.” The show will merge traditional domestic craft and contemporary practices, and consider the evolving relationship between machine- and man-made methods. As Edelkoort predicts, “Our future will be hybrid, and we will see disciplines merge. The performing arts and design will drift together as well as fashion and design . . . both are looking for new ways to bridge the ‘made by hand’ with the ‘produced by machine.’ A new generation of smart production systems will allow the machine and the human to go hand in hand.” Meanwhile, Studio Gutedort will make its Ventura Lambrate debut with Hidden Beauty/Inner Skin. The emerging German textile design studio acquires the key materials for this series—namely, animal innards—at a nearby slaughterhouse, which they use to create ruddy, leather-like jewelry and accessories. The Gutedort team was originally inspired by a 2012 visit to a South American food market, during which they noted the shapes and structures of animal parts rarely seen at markets in their native Germany. Back home, they devised a plan to repurpose these oft-wasted parts. According to cofounders Eva Schlechte and Jenny Hier, “We asked ourselves if there wasn't a hidden beauty and a higher value lying in those inner skins. . . The project questions whether or not we can overcome stereotypical aesthetics and appreciate uncommon appearances of beauty. We like to invite the audience to examine the objects openmindedly, so that their unprecedented shapes and uncommon, leathery surface can reveal their hidden value [and perhaps even] contribute to a change of perspective on [a material] that, in former times, was used in many different ways.”

Meanwhile, Colombia-born, Italy-based designer Laura Daza looked to the past for her material path forward. With Burnt Sienna, Daza revives an artisan color technique used during the Renaissance, in which a natural yellow pigment transforms into a reddish-brown color when heated. As Daza explains to L’AB, “The original pigment is a type of yellow ochre, traditionally known as raw sienna; it takes its name from the [Italian] city from where it was widely extracted. Ochre is considered to be the first-ever color used by humankind. The yellow ochre is rich in goethite minerals that, when heated, change color.” Citing the Explorations impressive color spectrum Renaissance painters were able to achieve using just a few ingredients, Daza hopes that Material Burnt Sienna will encourage a broader appreciation for and engagement with color alchemy and natural earths. “We live in a world where industrial and synthetic processes areboasts replacing our heritage. Food for Thought Last but certainly not least, the Design Academy Eindhoven is poised to reveal Eat Shit, the first exhibition organized by the school’s new department, Food Non Food. Through several installations by current and former DAE students as well as an onsite lab, Eat Shit will will examine “how, where, and why we eat,” presenting projects related to contemporary food culture that run the gamut from health (what goes in must come out, a la one’s waste indicates both condition and culture) to political (consider “Eat Shit” as a common protest phrase) focuses, and plenty in between.

As van Bennekom notes, “Nowadays we see plants as mostly aesthetic, but it was just a hundred years ago that we used to go to medical gardens. On the other end of the spectrum, 2014 grad Manon van Hoeckel’s ongoing protest project, In Limbo Embassy, explores the plight of politically unrepresented Ethiopian and Somali asylum seekers—originally in Amsterdam and, on the occasion of Salone, in Italy. Interestingly, while most asylum seekers are prohibited from working, they are legally permitted to freely express themselves. As van Hoeckel explains: “Refugees whose applications for asylum have been rejected often fall through the cracks. In Limbo Embassy is a neutral meeting place that represents this group. Its ambassadors—themselves refugees—invite and involve officials, neighbors, and passers-by . . . The mobile embassy (a small building on wheels) provides the opportunity for dialogue and cultural exchange on equal footing through different projects to represent refugees in limbo: exhibiti[ons], debates, and events. I want to create an opportunity for . . . direct contact between citizens and asylum seekers. I want people to be aware of the situation refugees are in, because as citizens we should know what is going on in our country.” It’s plenty to digest, we know. And that’s just the beginning. We’re looking forward to discovering a ton of new, diverse talent across the Ventura Lambrate exhibitions. The number of applications has never been so high before, and although we are in the midst of making our selection, we did already take a sneak peak at all the applications and we are very happy with the high quality that depicts from them! Now, we are ready to announce the final call for entries, which will only remain open until Thursday 5 February 2015.

In 2010, the first Ventura Project was launched in Lambrate – an industrial district in the northeastern suburbs of Milan. Ventura Lambrate 2010 was the first fully curated area of the FuoriSalone during the Milan Design Week. The Milan Design Week is the most important and renowned design event in the world; for already more than 50 years, this event announces the start of the new design year internationally. Every April, the official fair ‘Salone del Mobile’ and all associated events (with the overarching title ‘FuoriSalone’) occupy the center and reach out into the neighbourhoods of Milan. And each year, a large, influential and professional audience heads to Milan to discover the newest designs, to scout fledgling talent, to obtain fruitful inspirations and to do business.

Only in 1 month before Ventura Lambrate will take place in Milano. This fair from 14 until 19 April 2015 will highlight at its fair two others themes which is Fashion and The untapped potential of Materials. They are aware that the materials are worth investigating in their own right for their undiscovered potential. With this approach, the materials are getting smarter, the range is expanding, and people can ask themselves about the limits of use and pushing the boundaries of possibility. From using natural beetroot dye to shaping marble, designers are deepening their materials expertise. For this theme, several exhibitors such as Edelkoort Exhibitions and Craafts will appuier on contemporary and traditional craft techniques that are applicable for furniture and fashion, remodeling two fields. Here are some new exhibitors announced: Here is the Studio Laura Daza who works with a yellow pigment that becomes reddish-brown when heated. The artisan colour technique was widely used in the Renaissance, and the contemporary design studio is reviving it.

One of Ventura Lambrate’s core values is the importance of uniting and connecting people. This becomes visible in the exhibition of Logotel, who unites different designers that present work in one collection. 'NEED' is a multi-level storytelling: prototypes, products, services representing dimensions of change, created through the reinterpretation of needs. The Zuiderzee Museum asked Studio Kranen/Gille to dig around in its depot and discover forgotten props representing bygone cultural history. Out of 10,000 objects, the designers selected nine; these will be placed within lamps displayed in a special cabinet. The props don’t have original stories of their own but trigger the imagination and connect to contemporary design in surprising ways. This questioning of the world we live in is asked by more exhibitors. Koncern Design Studio presents Embracing Paranoia, design objects of this era, an era in which we are on the cusp between individual and collective epochs and don’t believe that this is our reality just yet. The GRIP team – a collaboration between Delft University of Technology, DeBende and Studio Knol – will unveil a dynamic multisensory space at Ventura Lambrate designed to help people regain awareness of the self. It uses lights and specially designed soundtracks to create a personal, inspirational atmosphere. GRIP has begun testing the installation with patients at a mental health institution in Eindhoven. They’ll invite Ventura Lambrate visitors to step inside the installation and comment on it, to help optimise the prototype and take the collaboration to another level.

Closely linked to Italian artisan practices and craftsmanship, several Italian exhibitors find their way to the Ventura fairground. They bring for example a collaboration between designer Paolo Ulian and Bufalini Marmi has yielded a series of furniture pieces that make use of optimised marble techniques. The exhibition also features the 40x40 collection: marble tiles, cut by a water-jet machine that can be easily assembled into objects. The special cutting technique means no waste material is left behind. Visitors can also experience how the wind can become a source of energy. Enessere Hercules is a wind generator that comes from the knowledge of the Italian artisans of the Vicenza area with a powerful engine and a unique design. And there is a special presentation by Scatto Italiano + Wafer Boards. The common points between Scatto Italiano bicycles and Wafer Boards skateboards are uniqueness, handmade, fashion approach, the care of details and manifacturing process (100% Made in Italy).

Whenever you are feeling hungry, head to Via Ventura 14 where you find the restaurant Feeding Creativity by XFood and Officine Tamborrino. The dishes of Apulian tradition will be served together with drinks that make you relax from an exhausting day at the Milan Design Week. Is the presentation of Design School Kolding(Denmark) with 7 young, female designers and 7 leading Danish design companies welcome you to join the discussion. Another interesting project by an academy is by HKU Design (The Netherlands). They take you into the daily reality of designers: a flexible, multiform world in which designers develop themselves. A liminal space where they experiment, explore and discover. A presentation where questions are more important than answers. The Tomorrow Collective from School of Industrial Design (Lund University) is about exploring ways of enabling us to live a sustainable life in the future. Inspired by past knowledge of how to grow, make and be, the project presents concepts for modern tools and systems that can be used within private homes or to share in smaller communities.

The new brand LABEL/BREED establishes collaborations between designers and manufacturers so they can share knowledge of the latest techniques and develop innovative products. The processes and results of its first five collaborations, whose participants include Chris Kabel, Studio Wieki Somers, Demakersvan,Christien Meindertsma and Marleen Kaptein, will be on show at Ventura Lambrate. Kaptein for example has worked with the Netherlands’ National Aerospace Laboratory to produce two chairs and a lamp with the help of the aviation company’s fibre-placement robot.

Der Mailänder Stadtteil Lambrate zieht während der Möbelmesse die internationale Designszene an. Besonders junge Designer finden hier eine Plattform. Unite & Connect, sprich networking, ist eines der Hauptanliegen der Macher von Ventura Lambrate. Junge kreative Designern zusammenbringen und die Zusammenarbeit sowie Co-Produktionen fördern. Auch in diesem Jahr passiert in dieser Hinsicht viel. Über 500 Designer stellen während des Salone del Mobile vom 14. bis zum 19. April im Mailänder Stadtteil Lambrate aus und bieten ihre Arbeiten auch zum Verkauf an. Die neue Marke Label/Breed hat beispielsweise eine Kooperation aus der Taufe gehoben, bei der sich Designer und Handwerker über neue technische Entwicklungen austauschen und gemeinsam Produkte entwickeln können. Nine Best Shows at Milan Design Week 2015 30 March 2015 Milan Design Week starts in two weeks. Hotly anticipated every year, Fuori Salone is one of the biggest and most important design shows in the world. Here Lucy Upward recommends nine of the best shows and displays to see during the seven-day event. 1. SUPERDESIGN SHOW at Superstudio, via Tortona 27, 14-19 April 5. Ventura Lambrate, 14-19 April COVER magazine presents Jan Kath at Superstudio’s new design event SUPERDESIGN SHOW. Celebrating Ventura Lambrate in the north east of the city centre is the place to see young, upcoming designers and some 15 years as the leader of international design in Milan the Superstudio group replaces the success of of the coolest brands plus exhibitions by the likes of trend forecaster Li Edelkoort (see below). Wandering from the Temporary Museum for New Design with the new SUPERDESIGN SHOW format. As well as Jan Kath the building to building in the Ventura area one can see an enormous array of displays. Museo del Novocento: This is one of my favorite spots for a cultural afternoon. Once every two weeks, Carnet de miart presents a selection of significant spots in Milan—streets, bars, restaurants, public squares, exhibition spaces, archaeological sites—as seen and narrated by artists, curators, designers, and cultural critics who work or have worked in the city. For our sixth issue, we’ve asked the people behind the Ventura Lambrate project for their Top places:

Near the Duomo you find a modern flavor between all Renaissance beauty. The Museum of Twentieth Century lives up to its name by showing the public modern Italian masterpieces such as Lucio Fontana, Umberto Boccioni, de Chirico and a good selection of contemporary names. The lay-out of the museum is a bit of a labyrinth, but the view from the museum on the almost finished Duomo is already worth a visit.

Margriet Vollenberg, founder/director of Organisation in Design & Ventura Projects Pellini: This is where it all started for me in Milan. Right after my graduation I headed to Milan to work for Pellini. This beautiful jewelry atelier was founded by Emma Caimi Pellini in the late ‘40s and taken over by her daughter Carla— hence a very typical Italian organization. I am still in good contact with them and they keep on inspiring me in my work. Pellini bijoux can be found in three shops in Milan, with my personal favorite on the Via Morigi. Trattoria Cappelletta: Home base for us during Ventura Lambrate. Never change a winning formula seems to be the motto in this authentic Italian restaurant. Nothing pretentious, just a very pleasant spot, with lovely staff that still speaks the Lambrate dialect and makes you feel right at home. Make sure to order the gnocco fritto, a specialty from the northern Italian provinces. It tastes fantastic after a day of hard working at Ventura Lambrate—or an intense visit of course!

A white box where creative languages, art creations, performances become real in complete freedom and make the location live of a special life. Going behind the schemes, interpreting style and fantasy, dancing on the edge… This is what the artists and creators that perform there can do. Something truly unique in Milan, it deserves a visit and makes you think, dream and lift over everyday life!

Pasticceria San Gregorio: A traditional Milan pastry shop. At Christmas time you can find delicious panettoni and the shop is full or bright decorations. Established very near to Porta Venezia since 30 years, Pasticceria San Gregorio is perfect for a quick and simple lunch or a very gourmand tea, served with freshly baked sweets, mignon pastries or tasty croissant. The service is friendly, prices are popular and quality is top! And don’t miss the Italian espresso served with cream. Santeria: This is really a secret place hidden in the courtyard of a condominium. Ideal for a tasty aperitivo, their Moscow Mule cocktail is superb! The atmosphere is really relaxed, the dishes with mozzarella di bufala are gorgeous and the cheese cake irresistible. Santeria offers also vegan dishes and its courtyard, even if very urban is quite romantic….

Margriet Vollenberg: lives and works in Utrecht, The Netherlands and graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2000. From 2000 to 2005 she lived and worked in Milan as designer for Pellini and Maria Christina Hamel and as project manager during the Fuori Salone. In 2005 she returned to The Netherlands where she started Studio Margriet Vollenberg and worked at Studio Jurgen Bey (now Studio Makkink & Bey). Together with Margo Konings she is the founder of Organisation in Design and Ventura Lambrate. Fulvia Ramogida: lives and works in Milan. She is graduated with a degree in philosophy and has several years of experience in the event management field especially with publishing companies, niche perfumery, kids products and she also worked in the IT marketing field. She is especially interested in design talents and abandoned spaces. She has been part of the Ventura Lambrate adventure since the very start.

De ontwerpen kenmerken zich door een onderzoek van materialen en waarn met vaak poëtisch resultaat. Onvoorspelbaar Het experimenteren met materialen en vooral ongebruikelijke technieken was op veel plaatsen in Ventura Lambrate te zien. Daarbij leek er bovendien een grote belangstelling onder de ontwerpers te bestaan voor de onvoorspelbaarheid van het proces. Ze laten het materiaal en de techniek als het ware hun eigen gang gaan. rENs (Renee Mennen en Stefanie van Keijsteren) doen dat bijvoorbeeld in hun project True Colours. In Lambrate hingen stukken textiel die het duo in water had gedrenkt en had voorzien van een zwarte streep met een eenvoudige stift. De inkt is uitgelopen en vertoont de verschillende kleuren waaruit het zwart is opgebouwd, Meest gelezen deze week in (afhankelijk van het soort textiel) uiteenlopende patronen. Ook toonde rENs keramische objecten die in een badje met kleurstof stonden. Het keramiek zuigt de 16-4-2015 College Rotterdam akkoord met Collectiegebouw gekleurde vloeistof op, waardoor als vanzelf een gradiënt in het materiaal ontstaat. 21-4-2015

Milaan - Het leuke van beurzen in Milaan, is dat er in de binnenstad vele honderden kleinere exposities te zien zijn. Veel jonge (Nederlandse) ontwerpers, maar ook opleidingen en Italianen met een eigen showroom in Milaan. Elke buurt is ten tijde van de beurs een Design Zona. De bekendste zijn Zona Tortona en Lambrate, maar ook Brera, San Babila en Magenta schreeuwen om aandacht van de pers en vakbezoekers. Het grappige is dat je nergens anders zoveel Nederlandse ontwerpers bij elkaar vindt als in Milaan, zelfs niet tijdens de Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. Vooral in Lambrate is het een Nederlands feestje. Een enkele keer gaat het helaas om fröbel- en prutswerk, maar er zaten ook dit jaar weer enkele juweeltjes bij. Zoals Studio WM (topper!), Mae Engelgeer, RenS, de gezamenlijke expositie van Mieke Meijer en Jeroen Wand, het nieuwe Label/Breed, Nienke Sybrandy, Michiel van der Kley, Toer, Floris Wubben en Cor Unum. Ook de show van Moooi in Zona Tortona was weer erg indrukwekkend. Nieuw is Moooi Carpets, een collectie van (geprinte) karpetten van bekende designers zoals Marcel Wanders zelf, Studio Job, Bertjan Pot, Edward van Vliet, Front en Ross Lovegrove. Ook Linteloo liet zich in de eigen showroom weer van zijn beste kant zien, met o.a. de Butcher-collectie van Sjoerd Vroonland. Een andere hotspot is de galerie van het Italiaanse design-icoon Rosanna Orlandi. Hier zagen we twee prachtige behangcollecties van Nederlandse ontwerpers voor Amerikaanse merken: BCXSY voor Calico Wallpaper en Frank Tjepkema voor WolfGordon.

Naast karpetten en behang, zijn ook spiegels en bijzettafeltjes dit jaar trends op zich. Qua materialen is marmer sterk in opkomst, naast koper en brons. Ook materialen die vragen om vakmanschap, zoals hout en leer, zien we veel. Meubelstoffen worden weer bonter qua dessins, vooral facet-vormen en driehoekjes zijn in, en qua kleur ligt de nadruk op zwart/wit. In de vormgeving van meubels valt een tendens te bespeuren naar ‘dikkere’ meubels; hetzij met een bijna matrasachtige stoffering, hetzij met een dikke rol als rug. Opvallende eyecatchers zijn er minder en minder. Fabrikanten kiezen liever voor veiligheid in de zin van meer commerciële modellen in toch wel veiligere kleuren als zwart, blauw en beige. Begrijpelijk, maar het maakt het beurzen wel wat saaier. Om bezoekers toch de stand op te trekken, is er echter een nieuwe tool: geuren! Die worden steeds belangrijker in ons interieur. L’AB: Ventura Lambrate is known for presenting many young and emerging designers. What sort of opportunities do you hope your venue will give those who are just starting out? MV: After graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven, I quickly noticed that so many of my fellow designers were struggling to get their work out in the public. This was one of the initial goals for Ventura Lambrate—to create a platform where young talents can show their work, even while they are still students together with their academies. Design fairs, and Salone in particular, are still the stages to get noticed by press, to meet professionals and buyers. Your work can be spectacular, but if it's not seen there is no use. Because Ventura Lambrate has set a name for itself, we are able to attract the right journalists and professional crowd. All Ventura exhibitors— young, established; solo projects and collectives—have boosted their careers by being noticed on this stage.

L’AB: What changes have you witnessed in the design world since Ventura Lambrate launched in 2010?

MV: Every year, it is such a joy to see the works in real life finally and to observe that by putting things together a compelling story is told. This year I'm particularly excited about the great number of participating schools and academies. In total 24 international academies will show on our platform, which means that about 500 students will present their work. Another thing that I’m proud to present this year is a location where we bring together a selection of projects that merge fashion and design, research and craftsmanship. This emerging phenomenon will be on display at the Via Cletto Arrighi.

And what I think will be a lot of fun is a special project by Moleskine. ‘Do It Your Way. Polish Design in Pieces’, 14-19 April 2015,Ventura Lambrate, Milan, photo Jan Lutyk

19 April marked the end of Milan Design Week – the biggest and most prestigious design fairs in the world. Every year, for the duration of the fairs, the city transforms to adapt to the needs of designers and design enthusiasts. Design Week consists of several independent exhibitions and showrooms. The largest of these is the Salone del Mobile located in Rho. Nearby is the Salone Satellite – this year full of very good projects. Another important fair is Fuorisalone located in the district of Lambrate. From the perspective of Polish design, Fuorisalone, held for the sixth time, was by far the most interesting part of Design Week. Young Polish designers presented their innovative and imaginative designs following the fair’s theme ‘Unite and Patyczaki by Jan Godlewski, Do It Your Way. Polish Design in Pieces, curated by Ewa Solarz & TABANDA group, Fuorisalone, Connect’. This edition also set the stage for crossovers between design and fields of science and social Milano Design Week, photo Maria Fiter, Milan, April 2015 progress, material research and pioneering design-fashion / couture hybrids. Martyna Barbara Golik has presented the collection of furniture titled ‘Touch that taste!’. Her project is concerned with the translation of smell and taste of food into touch and vision to create an experimental collection of textile objects. More specifically, she took the five main tastes: umami, sweet, salty, bitter and sour as a point of departure to design a collection of five interior-related textile objects where each of the object is a translation of one taste; for example, grimace and shiver when tasting something sour inspired a grey and yellow throw made of cut stripes of material. In Golik’s projects, the combination of smell and taste in textile create a complex sensory experience.

Crea-re design studio based in Valencia presented “Terra” – a paper pulp pendant lamp inspired by Jean Dubuffet‘s “Matériologies” (1959-60), a series of paintings which represents the apotheosis of soil. Just like those paintings, the surface of the lamp resembles a rugged terrain, very organic and irregular. The interior part of the lamp is in ochre colour that gives a warm and pleasant glow when the lamp is on. Crea-re gives a second life to abandoned or unloved objects and materials. This approach to design is part of a wider trend increasingly sought by consumers.

LE INNOVAZIONI DI VENTURA LAMBRATE Ventura Lambrate 2014, ph. Ilco Kemmere Altro focus del 2015 per Ventura Lambrate sono le Accademie e le Università di Design: 24 in tutto quelle ospitate. La sfida di quest’anno è costruire le abitazioni del futuro, con attenzione particolare al riutilizzo di quelle abbandonate, laddove la sostenibilità fa i conti con il consumismo. Tanti e da tutto il mondo i designer ospiti, per il programma completo vedete qui, citiamo solo, tra gli altri, alcuni giovani collettivi chiamati a ravvivare il terreno già fertile dell’esposizione: da C.G.C.M Designers Uniti da Giappone, Taiwan, Tailandia e Usa, a COTTO-Another Perspective 3 che presenta 10 gruppi di designer e architetti da 6 paesi pronti a sorprendere i visitatori con inaspettate visioni di bellezza delle stanze da bagno, fino a Form & Seek un collettivo tanto interessato alla spunto poetico del design, quanto ai suoi aspetti più funzionali.

Luogo per eccellenza di presentazione di nuovi trend e talenti emergenti situato alla periferia nord est della città, il distretto Ventura Lambrate, si veste a festa per i giorni del Salone del Mobile (dal 14 al 19 aprile). Gli studi già presenti in quartiere aprono le porte ai visitatori, i grandi capannoni delle exfabbriche si rivitalizzano ospitando esposizioni e installazioni, così come le corti tradizionali diventano gallerie a cielo aperto, piuttosto che zone relax e ristoro. Organizzato e curato dallo studio olandese Organisation in Design, il distretto Ventura Lambrate che festeggia quest’anno i 10 anni di Ventura Projects, si snoda tra via dei Canzi, via Ventura, via Massimiano e via Privata Oslavia. Il motto Unite & Connect ben definisce questo distretto come un posto dove la gente e il design si incontrano e si confrontano grazie anche alla presenza di un marketplace che consente a chiunque sia interessato di acquistare i prodotti in esposizione. Tra i vari temi scelti per il 2015, citiamo per primo la tecnologia, non foss’altro perché come sostiene Marcus Fairs, il caporedattore del prestigioso magazine online Dezeen (anche media partner di Ventura Lambrate): “La tecnologia è qualcosa di intrinsecamente ottimista, dato che ogni nuovo sviluppo, ogni nuovo device porta in sé la promessa di un futuro nuovo” e si auspica migliore. Ampio spazio è riservato anche ai brand e alle label più provocatori, in grado di sorprenderci attraverso la loro storia o i loro progetti. Inoltre grazie alla collaborazione con il marketplace online CrowdyHouses tutti i visitatori e gli espositori di Ventura Lambrate possono disporre di una piattaforma commerciale online, che va ad aggiungersi come un digital shop, al pop up shop che è invece una realtà fisica e concreta, visitabile proprio nei giorni del Fuorisalone. Infine tra le tante novità, segnaliamo anche una delle nuove location per Ventura Lambrate: il Giardino Segreto, 500 metri quadri, nascosti nel cuore di Lambrate, che sarà teatro di una fantastica installazione. FUORISALONE: RIDOTTO IMPATTO AMBIENTALE PER VENTURA LAMBRATE GRAZIE ALLE BIOPLASTICHE NOVAMONT PER IL CATERING E LA RACCOLTA DIFFERENZIATA DEI RIFIUTI

Novara, 14 aprile 2015 – Da oggi al 19 aprile le opere di oltre 500 designer popoleranno Ventura Lambrate, nell’ambito degli eventi del Fuorisalone il percorso più grande, il più sperimentale e anche l’unico curato in ogni suo aspetto dalla compagnia olandese Organisation in Design. Disegni, mostre, progetti, prototipi e ogni altro frutto del talento e del lavoro di ricerca e innovazione di designer, progettisti e architetti provenienti da ogni parte del mondo saranno esposti su una superficie di 13.000 mq per un afflusso di visitatori stimato in poco meno di 100.000 persone. L’edizione 2015, anno eccezionale per Milano in vista di Expo, sarà caratterizzata da un piano di sostenibilità per una corretta gestione degli aspetti ambientali, sociali ed economici dell’evento. Proprio nell’ambito della sostenibilità si inserisce il contributo di Novamont, che applicherà il modello di “ecofesta”, messo a punto per ridurre l’impatto ambientale dei grandi eventi attraverso l’utilizzo di materiali usa e getta compostabili e la diffusione della pratica della raccolta differenziata della frazione organica e del riciclo. All’interno del ristorante principale e in tutti i punti ristoro verranno utilizzati piatti, bicchieri e posate in Mater-Bi®, la versatile e innovativa bioplastica di Novamont con cui si realizzano soluzioni e prodotti ambientalmente sostenibili: dai sacchetti della spesa a quelli per la raccolta dell’umido, dai teli per la pacciamatura agricola alle reti della frutta, fino alle stoviglie per il consumo dei pasti. La bioplastica Mater-Bi® è biodegradabile e compostabile secondo lo standard UNI EN13432, diminuisce le emissioni di gas ad effetto serra, riduce il consumo di energia e di risorse non rinnovabili, completa un circolo virtuoso: le materie prime di origine agricola tornano alla terra attraverso processi di biodegradazione o compostaggio senza il rilascio di sostanze inquinanti. Oltre alla fornitura di prodotti biodegradabili e compostabili, Novamont collaborerà con Ventura Lambrate nell’attività di formazione sulla raccolta dei rifiuti organici, attraverso la distribuzione di materiale di comunicazione e con un video dedicato alla città di Milano, che a gennaio 2015 ha fatto registrare il 54% di raccolta differenziata, un risultato eccellente per una grande metropoli. “Poco meno di 100.000 persone che affolleranno in pochi giorni una zona circoscritta come Ventura possono avere un impatto impressionante in termini di rifiuti generati. Per questo motivo è fondamentale rendere la raccolta della frazione umida facile ed efficiente attraverso l’impiego di materiali biodegradabili e compostabili e con una comunicazione dedicata”, ha commentato Andrea Di Stefano, responsabile Progetti Speciali e Comunicazione di Business. “Conformemente al nostro approccio “rifiuti zero”, le soluzioni per il foodservice e i sacchetti compostabili in Mater-Bi® consentono di ridurre la produzione di rifiuti, contribuendo così a ridurre significativamente l’impatto ambientale di un evento come Ventura Lambrate”. Novamont è leader nello sviluppo e nella produzione di materiali e biochemicals attraverso l’integrazione di chimica, ambiente e agricoltura. Con 370 addetti (circa il 20% dei quali impegnato in attività di R&S), ha chiuso il 2013 con un turnover di 136 milioni di euro ed investimenti costanti in attività ricerca e sviluppo (6,2% sul fatturato 2013); detiene un portafoglio di circa 1.000 brevetti. Che cosa faceva durante il Salone? "Prendevo un mese di ferie e mi occupavo di logistica, affitti e trasporti per amici designer olandesi che mi chiedevano una mano per esporre al Fuorisalone. Per 201 O.i.D 6 o 7 anni ho lavorato in Tortona con Marcel Wanders, Maarten Baas, Kiki van tion Eijk e molti altri". Come sbarca a Ventura? "Cercavo un luogo senza idee, perché quelle le avevo già io".

E quali erano? "Immaginavo una piattaforma per raccontare storie più che oggetti, dall'idea al processo alla produzione ". Cosa l'ha convinta di Ventura? "Ho incontrato Mariano Pichler, impegnato nella riconversione dell'ex area industriale di Lambrate in art district. È scoccata la scintilla. E poi il nome mi ha conquistato: un po' avventura in italiano e un po' "venture" in inglese".

Com'era la prima edizione? "Un'avventura, appunto, senza né bagni, né lucchetti alle porte. Solo 24 espositori, la Design Academy di Eindhoven a fare da traino e un'identità ancora nordeuropea ". Ieri si è chiusa la kermesse della settimana del design: è stato preso d’assalto il distretto Ventura-Lambrate (sesta edizione), che si conferma come il laboratorio per eccellenza di oggetti del futuro, interessanti per ricerca sperimentale di materiali bio-tech, più giusti che belli, all’insegna della sostenibilità e in simbiosi tra artigianalità e tecnologia. Qui tra litri di birra, crauti & wurstel, hot dog e patatine fritte distribuiti da ambulanti disseminati ovunque, succhi naturali, moda, design e bio-food ruotano intorno alla ricerca sulle potenzialità di materiali ecologici e i protagonisti sono i giovani delle accademie internazionali. Vincono per originalità i prototipi di design funzionale e poetico, per lo più nordico, proiettato oltre le ricercatezza di forme minimal-organic ai bisogni del futuro. Centosettanta espositori provenienti da 36 Paesi distribuiti nei capannoni intorno a via Ventura, dove per strada si sentiva parlare solo inglese, hanno stregato non solo il pubblico underground. Spopola il vetro riciclato, il legno in versione high-tech, come ha dimostrato la mostra "SelfAssembly Furniture” che ha esposto progetti sviluppati in collaborazione con il Massachusetts Institute of Technology, unici per la lavorazione tecnologica di vegetali, con visioni azzardate ma non troppo, poiché questo si può trasformare in elemento di arredo senza l’intervento dell’uomo. La nuova tappa proposta quest’anno è stata il "Belgian Village”: un giardino incantato DIFT, dove 30 marchi belgi hanno trovato un allestimento insolito e sorprendente. Materiali alternativi, tinture naturali ricavati da succhi di vegetali, ottimizzazione di quelli di scarto (www.ventura-projects.com). 24 le Accademie presenti e tra le altre, qui non potevano mancare la Design Academy di Eidhoven, la Saint Martins e la School of architetture di Aarhus in Danimarca, attenti alle trasformazioni del concetto di abitare e l’Institut Industrial Design FHNW di Basilea. I temi fondamentali sono stati l'autopromozione, il ritorno all’artigianato però riadattato a una possibile produzione in serie con sistemi integrati. Design, scienza e natura stabiliscono nuove sinergie tra ricerca e le aziende, l’obiettivo è migliorare la vita delle persone in armonia con l’ambiente. Singolare l’esperimento di giustapposizione tra stampa ceramica 3D e il vetro soffiato a mano, proposto da maestri vetrai della Fornace Salvati a Murano in collaborazione con un gruppo di designer. Complimenti a Margriet Vollenberg, fondatrice di Ventura Lambrate, leader di Organisation in Design, team con base a Utrecht e composta da nove donne "toste”, grazie alle quali quest’anno si è vista più qualità che quantità, con l’obiettivo di esplorare nuovi bisogni e funzioni di un futuro già presente. TERRANOVA AL FUORISALONE 2015: VENTURA LAMBRATE

Uno degli eventi più interessanti di Milano, il Fuorisalone 2015, è appena terminato. Adesso la città si trasformerà per sei mesi in una grande area di attrazione per il mondo in occasione di Expo. Siamo da poco tornati al nostro headquarter di Rimini e abbiamo raccolto un po' di foto (potete vederle tutte su Instagram) del nostro breve - ma intenso - tour milanese.

L'area più interessante di questo evento è Ventura Lambrate (senza togliere nulla all'epicentro della manifestazione, in via Tortona). Ventura Lambrate si è distinta per la grande aggregazione di giovani designer emergenti e per il suo look & feel da grande laboratorio creativo. Lodevole l'iniziativa della UMPRUM (Academy of Arts Architecture & Design in Prague) che permetteva ai visitatori di divertirsi con cartone e perni per creare la loro opera di design (foto a sinistra). Altre opere interessanti sono i tappeti non convenzionali di WE MAKE CARPETS (cliccando sul link, potete vederli nel dettaglio). Un po' isolati dall'intera manifestazione Palazzo Litta e la Fabbrica del Vapore (che comunque ospitano tutto l'anno esposizioni interessanti). Ventura Lambrate: il Fuorisalone all’insegna della sostenibilità By Lo Sta� | 20 aprile 2015 All’insegna delle contaminazioni tra discipline diverse: design, moda, tecnologia, ambiente, riunite sotto il comune denominatore della sostenibilità: il distretto di Ventura Lambrate, zona a nord est di Milano, durante il Salone del Mobile diventa una delle mete più popolari del Fuorisalone, capace di attirare ogni anno un pubblico selezionato e molto attento alle novità. Gallerie d’arte o ex fabbriche dismesse hanno ospitato per l’edizione 2015 ben 176 brand provenienti da 36 paesi diversi. Per “Coinvolgere attraverso l’architettura”, sono stati protagonisti una serie di spunti per recuperare le case abbandonate e preservarle attraverso nuove tecniche conservative. Centrale anche il tema dell’artigianalità, del saper fare in chiave green, senza cioè provocare ricadute sull’ambiente, con prodotti nati dal riutilizzo del vetro e dalla sabbia, un materiale ampiamente disponibile in natura ma poco utilizzato. Há quinze anos a holandesa Margriet Vollenberg trabalha em projetos no circuito Fuori Salone da Semana de Milão. Junto à ex-sócia Margo Konings, fez a primeira apresentação da Moooi de Marcel Wanders, e trabalhou com nomes como Piet Boon e Maarten Baas em projetos na Zona Tortona. Ao longo dos anos, no entanto, a região foi se tornando mais comercial, perdendo a atmosfera subversiva que antes a caracterizava e, ainda, deixando de responder às mudanças que a crise econômica representou na mentalidade geral. “O mundo já não queria só o design em um pedestal, iluminado por um poderoso spotlight”, lembra ela. “Designers e marcas promissoras tinham dificuldade de encontrar um lugar para mostrar seus projetos.” Para as fundadoras do Organization in Design, estava clara a necessidade de uma nova área, com foco em criatividade e experimentação. “Queríamos trazer de volta ao circuito a criatividade não comercial, ofuscada pelos grandes orçamentos de empresas vorazes para entrar em contato com o público do Fuori Salone.” Em 2009, encontraram a oportunidade em Lambrate, ex-zona industrial com muitos galpões disponíveis. No ano seguinte, acontecia a primeira edição do Ventura Lambrate, ainda hoje o único distrito onde tudo é selecionado por critérios de uma curadoria. Neste ano, a sexta edição reúne cerca de 140 eventos, vindos de quase 40 países, com a participação de 24 universidades. A seguir, Vollenberg fala sobre o passado e o presente do VL. Bamboo O que faltava no Salone quando decidiram criar o Ventura Lambrate? Margriet Vollenberg Há 10 anos, era o momento dos projetos megalomaníacos das grandes marcas. E depois veio a crise, que foi uma mudança realmente visível. Você sentia as pessoas mais conscientes do que estava acontecendo, precisando de outro tipo de informação. É quando a história por trás do produto fica muito mais interessante e valiosa.

B O VL passa inteiramente por uma curadoria. Como é feito todo o processo de seleção?

B Quais são as tendências neste ano?

MV De fato é todo um processo, bastante longo, que começa em novembro. Recebemos portfólios e projetos que, em sua maioria, com tal antecedência, ainda estão longe de serem concretos. Mas, como designer, é fácil para mim ler croquis e explicações. O maior desafio é não perder as joias escondidas dentro das inscrições. E temos a sorte de trabalhar com exposições que se inscrevem já prontas, caso daquelas que um país ou uma universidade organizam, o que significa que não temos que pinçar cada item que estará nelas (o que seria humanamente impossível). B Quais são os critérios? MV Tento nunca esquecer o aspecto do mobiliário, que para mim ainda é bem importante nesse contexto. De forma geral, somos um palco para experimentação. Então, se você tem uma coisa interessante para mostrar ou dizer, o VL lhe dá espaço. B Como você avalia a importância do Ventura Lambrate no contexto do Salone? MV O VL se distingue pela sua capacidade de adaptação rápida aos desenvolvimentos dentro e fora do campo do design, pela forma mais “ampla” de expor. Acho particularmente importante que projetos inovadores sejam apresentados em sua fase inicial, e tenham assim a oportunidade de serem escolhidos pelos profissionais certos. É essencial destacar estudantes e novos talentos em um evento emblemático como o Salone, porque eles marcam as tendências e direções para a qual nossa sociedade está caminhando. A próxima geração é ambiciosa, tenta melhorar

MV Vamos ver muita pesquisa de material e de cores. Estou feliz por a cor ser novamente uma questão, com bastante foco em métodos tradicionais de tingimento. No ano passado vimos que o mármore está de volta, e agora ele vem combinado a novas tecnologias de manufatura, como o corte a laser. Veremos também muitos crossovers entre o design e todos os tipos de disciplinas, como em um belo projeto do estúdio italiano Wood-Skin, feito em parceria com um dos laboratórios de tecnologia do MIT, o Self-Assembly Lab. Outra coisa importante é a aproximação do design com a moda; muitos métodos que são usados na produção de roupas começam a ser empregados no mobiliário. Vamos dedicar toda uma área para o tema – Li Edelkoort vai organizar uma exposição, e a empresa fiorentina Craafts, que trabalha com grandes marcas de alta costura, vai mostrar o que pode fazer para o design. B Como acontecem as pontes entre as ideias e os protótipos, e o que podem vir a se tornar? MV Quando você apresenta design experimental, trabalha com embriões que ainda não foram plenamente desenvolvidos. Você não vem para o Ventura ver cadeiras de grande tiragem, e sim o começo de uma proposta que depois poderá ser absorvida pela indústria. Isso fica claro com a quantidade de scounting acontecendo no VL – os diretores das marcas famosas do Salone tiram suas gravatas quando acabam os principais negócios na feira, em geral no fim de semana, e vão fazer suas pesquisas nas nossas exposições. Composed of individual granules that bond together at low temperatures, the colour of Breaking the Mold’s Bronze Vessels vessels can be carefully controlled, and they can be reheated and re-cast.

The Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark presented an exhibit exploring materiality and craftsmanship; The Augmented Timber Curtain explores relations between digital precision and material indeterminacy. The structure consists of an assembly of wood components digitally crafted through advanced production techniques.

German students from Offenbach University of Art Made from the native stone of designer Cosma and Design experimented with responsive Frascina southern Italian hometown, this materials, employing magnetism, electricity and collection combines rusticity with refinement. moisture to create fascinating effects. rENs presented their newest work at the Ventura Lambrate Area: “True Colours” and “Fade to Stay”. Designers Renee Mennen and Stefanie van Keijsteren are more than interested in colours; they analyze, experiment and dissect the phenomenon in many different ways. We were impressed by the “True Colours” project, in which they used various black markers on different kinds of cloth and drenched that into just plain water, in order to “break the black color down” into various shades. The result of this seemingly simple experiment is a marvelous fabric collection of 81 different designs. Studio rENs started their company in 2008 and have been collaborating with partners like Desso, Cor Unum, Zuiderzeemuseum, Textielmuseum and Lynfabrikken.

Architectenweb presenteert gedurende een aantal weken een serie over Nederlands ontwerp dat tijdens de Milan Design Week 2015 is gepresenteerd. In de derde aflevering de resultaten van samenwerking tussen ontwerpers en industrie, geïnitieerd door het nieuwe Label/Breed.

Vanonder een stolp kijkt een olifantje de beschouwer indringend, bijna onheilspellend aan. De stolp is feitelijk een weckpot op een keramische voet, het olifantje is gevonden in het depot van het Zuiderzeemuseum en het geheel is een ontwerp van Kranen/Gille, als onderdeel van een 'Jutterskabinet'.

Het designdistrict Ventura Lambrate was de welgekozen locatie voor de introductie van de eerste collectie van Label/Breed. Het betreft niet de collectie van een 'gewoon' nieuw merk: Label/Breed is een initiatief om samenwerking tussen designers en gespecialiseerde fabrikanten tot stand te brengen. Het label is opgezet door Stijn Roodnat en Toon Stilma.

Het olifantje is een van de persoonlijke favorieten van het duo Jos Kranen en Johannes Gille. Het Jutterskabinet, dat in Ventura Lambrate werd gepresenteerd, bestaat uit een speciaal vervaardigde vitrinekast voor negen lampen waarin een voorwerp wordt getoond. Het project is gevolgd uit een opdracht van het Zuiderzeemuseum. Curiositeiten Het museum maakt de Zuiderzeegeschiedenis actueel door jaarlijks kunstenaars en designers te vragen hun visie te geven op de collectie van het museum. Kranen en Gille doken in het rekwisietendepot, waarin zij als 'jutters' voorwerpen bijeen zochten. Het duo raakte gefascineerd 29-4-2015 - 17:44door de meest uiteenlopende voorwerpen zonder verhaal, zoals een pijp, een flacon, een spuit en een glazen oog in een doosje. Tevens stuitte Kranen/Gille op een voorraad weckfklessen uit de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw. Hier kwamen het bewaren door het museum en het bewaren van voedsel in potten bij elkaar.

Bij dergelijke samenwerking ging het in de afgelopen jaren vaak om de combinatie van een ontwerper en een traditionele techniek of een ambacht; dat is hier zeker niet het geval. Het is niet de eerste insteek van Label/Breed om aloude vaardigheden te herwaarderen, maar om de ontwikkeling van vernieuwende en functionele interieurproducten te stimuleren. Architectenweb presenteert gedurende een aantal weken een serie over Nederlands ontwerp dat tijdens de Milan Design Week 2015 is gepresenteerd. In de vierde aflevering de gezamenlijke, evenwichtige presentatie van Studio Jeroen Wand en Studio Mieke Meijer.

Architectenweb presenteert gedurende een aantal weken een serie over Nederlands ontwerp dat tijdens de Milan Design Week 2015 is gepresenteerd. In de vijfde aflevering de zeepbellen van Nienke Sybrandy.

Voor hun presentatie in Ventura Lambrate bundelden Studio Jeroen Wand en Studio Mieke Meijer de krachten. Spatial Fragments in Uncharted Materiality heette de gezamenlijke expositie, een titel die aangeeft waar de twee ontwerpstudio's elkaar ontmoeten.

De ontwerpen van Nienke Sybrandy (Studio Sybrandy) komen vaak voort uit haar observaties van het alledaagse en gewone. Vanzelfsprekende handelingen en voorwerpen weet ze te verbinden met grotere en universele verhalen. Zo kan het gebeuren dat Sybrandy tijdens de afwas een zeepbel zich los ziet maken van de rest en daarin plots het symbool ziet voor kwetsbaarheid en vergankelijkheid. Het object van bijna niets dat plots uiteen spat.

Ze werken weliswaar volgens andere methodes, de ontwerpers delen wel de interesse in materiaal, constructie en techniek. Hoewel de ontwerpen dan ook sterk kunnen verschillen (in uitstraling), door ze samen te presenteren bleken de werken - zoals Mieke Meijer en Jeroen Wand ook hadden bedoeld - elkaar te verklaren en te versterken. Het werk van Studio Mieke Meijer (Mieke Meijer en Roy Letterlé) is minimalistisch en elegant; het toont duidelijk de fascinatie voor constructie en detaillering. Het werk van Studio Jeroen Wand heeft vaker rauwe randjes en vertoont de sporen van het maakproces. Wand start geregeld vanuit het experiment met materiaal en techniek. Grillig gelaagd Van de ongebruikelijke productiewijzen die Wand toepast, stond in Ventura Lambrate een aantal boeiende resultaten. In het oog springend was het veld van vazen: Phases is een collectie vazen, uitgevoerd in een hoogte van zeven en van vijftig centimeter, uit gips. Tijdens de productie laat Wand twee fasen van het materiaal op elkaar in werken: de gevormde en gedroogde vaas dompelt hij deels in vloeibaar gips, dat blijft kleven. In een balans tussen controle en het materiaal zijn gang laten gaan, krijgen de vazen meer of minder grillige lagen over de onderste helft. Rafelranden Voor de Laminated Table heeft Wand restanten fineer samengeperst tot stevige panelen, die een tafelblad vormen. Het oppervlak vertoont een boeiende afwisseling van houtsoorten en hier en daar de rafelranden van het maakproces. De Solid Flat is een kamerscherm waarbij een aantal lagen papier vanaf beide zijden over een houten constructie is gespannen. De spanningen die ontstaan zorgen voor oncontroleerbare kreukels, kleurverschillen en doorzichtigheid van het oppervlak. Een stuk strakker oogt de Paper Chair, die geheel is geconstrueerd uit samengeperste lagen papier (inclusief de verbindingen). In het gebruik zal de stoel echter ook rauwe randjes gaan vertonen, als het papier slijt, vlekt, delamineert en ezelsoren krijgt. Tactiliteit Eveneens ontstaan vanuit fascinatie voor materiaal is het project Materialism van Studio Mieke Meijer. In reactie op de gestage verdwijning van tactiele materialen in onze gemaakte omgeving, aldus de studio, maakten de ontwerpers panelen van exact dezelfde afmetingen uit verschillende materialen.

Tegelijkertijd doet de zeepbel denken aan het speelse en vrolijke bellen blazen, waarbij kinderen (en volwassenen) genieten van de lichtheid en de kleuren van de dansende bellen. Het project dat Sybrandy in Ventura Lambrate toonde is ooit gestart met het zilveren theelepeltje in de vorm van een bellenblaasstokje. De zeepbel wordt het startpunt voor tal van referenties en verhalen. Naast het theelepeltje als Broekbakema ontwerpt hoofdkantoor Océ 'conversatiestuk' toonde ze er bijvoorbeeld het textielontwerp Ebullience en het 4-5-2015 serviesgoed Surfactants. De Ebullience-weefsels tonen de vloeiende en luchtige vormen van de zeepbellen, Video: Koolhaas in Belgisch tv-programma maar houden ze in al hun kwetsbaarheid vast als dessin. In hun uitvergrote 30-4-2015 afbeelding de aan bellen universum op zich. Inbo ontwerpt Hefkwartier in Rotterdam-Zuid

Bij Surfactants zijn de zeepbellen gevangen als dessin voor serviesgoed, letterlijk. Met behulp van een surfactant (van surface active agent, een hulpmiddel om de oppervlaktespanning van een vloeistof te verlagen) lost het glazuur op in de zeepbel. De zeepbellen die tegen het keramiek spatten, bepalen het patroon van Partnernieuws toon alles het glazuur en voorzien. Dankzij een surfactant kan het serviesgoed dus op volkomen toevallige wijze worden gedecoreerd. Partner in beeld: VBI Eames Powers of Soap is een nieuw ontwerp: een collectie katoenen theedoeken met een dessin van zeepbellen met verschillende afmetingen. De collectienaam is afgeleid en Mecanoo van Powers of Ten, deGispen documentaire waarin Charles en Ray Eames de relatieve gaan samenwerking verhoudingen van kosmisch tot microscopisch niveau tonen. Daarnaast, zo legt aan Sybrandy uit, worden bij het afdrogen van de vaat de echte zeepbelletjes als het ware geabsorbeerd in de theedoek en daarmee in het dessin. De dunne zeepfilm van een bel vertoont een fraai kleurenpalet doordat het het licht Boon Edam opent van twee oppervlakkenkantoor reflecteert. Het tafelkleed en de servetten uit katoen van de in Manhattan collectie Double Bubble imiteren de reflectie door glanzend lurex als inslagdraad van het weefsel te gebruiken. Grenzen worden onderzocht, opgezocht en overschreden want de creatieve sector laat zich niet door stramienen vastleggen. Dat voel je bij Ventura Lambrate. Dat design op ambachtelijke, authentieke wijze kan ontstaan bewijst Studio Floris Wubben met zijn Globe Project. In Milaan konden we ‘the making of’ van een lamp aanschouwen bij Ventura Lambrate. Onder grote belangstelling toonde Floris Wubben ons zijn werkwijze: een zelfgebouwde installatie die ervoor zorgt dat een porseleinen bol rondgedraaid kan worden. Door er vervolgens een gasbrander op te richten zet het water van de natte bol uit en springen er stukken porselein vanaf. Zo ontstaat langzamerhand een lichtdoorlatende bol met tekeningen die ontstaan door de toegepaste techniek.

Fuorisalone 2015 April, 14-19, 2015 Moleskine #IdeasNoted Documenting design innovation at Ventura Lambrate. Moleskine joins forces with Ventura Lambrate to set up a Documentation Centre for design innovation at what has become one of the most prominent and innovative design districts in the world. With notebooks and pencils in hand, a group of young design reporters cruise the onceindustrial warehouses and streets of the Ventura district to sketch and document the design objects, the materials, the technological solutions, as well as the installations, the crowd and the post- industrial spaces.

The drawings, renderings and sketches created by the reporters, drawn by hand on the pages of the new Moleskine Smart Notebook designed with Adobeâ&#x201E;˘, are then captured by devices via a specially designed app, sent directly to the Adobe Creative Cloud and thus made available in vector format at the Documentation Centre set up at Via Ventura 14. Here, the sketches are processed via Adobe Creative Suite and displayed to the public, to be browsed in analogue and digital format in the Documentation Centre. Designed by Milan and Florence based studio CICLICA.CC, the Documentation Centre consists of a cabinet within the former industrial pavilion of Ventura 14, which will work as a sort of wunderkammer, or a Cabinet of Curiosity, consisting of a metal frame covered with panels. Just like a library, there will be tables for the attendees to go through the materials and take notes. A smart area is dedicated to the digital elaboration of the sketches via Adobe Suite. Elaboration happens live, visible on special large screen. Making paper evolve. The Moleskine Smart Notebook. How does it work? Drawings made on the new Moleskine Smart Notebook (Creative Cloud connected) and captured using the app Moleskine, a Creative Cloud connected app (free, iPhone only) are automatically made available on the Adobe Creative Cloud, as editable vector files. 100

Design Academy Eindhoven will present “Eat Shit” at Ventura Lambrate during the Milan Design Week from 14 to 19 April 2015. As the first exhibition debuting the school’s new Food Non Food department, 18 students and teachers will transfer to Milan for a series of live public-laboratory workshops. This latest educational offering delves into the politics of how, where and why we eat. Nothing deserves our attention more than food – it binds us, fuels us, and the myriad of issues concerning its production, distribution and consumption touch on some of humanity’s most fundamental problems. Food is life. So it makes sense that designer’s examine one of foods stinkiest consequences – human waste. Shit is the printout, the great reveler of a person’s health and culture. And to shout “Eat Shit” is to hurl a protest against contemporary realities, which leave people divided and oftentimes hungry.

DAE alumni Jason Page has discovered over 400 graduation projects focusing on food or faeces from 1976 until now, which will be revealed in a timeline. The following installations will also be on display: “Outdoor Pharmacy” by Marloes van Bennekom, the “Poederij” by Femke Mosh, and Arne Hendricks’ “Pigeon Poo Tower.” Next to that, the DAE will exhibit recent graduation work like “Popcorn Monsoon” by Jolene Carlier, Pim van Baaren’s “Holy Crap” (a project that rethinks waste in Kathmandu) and “In Limbo Embassy,” a chilling protest project exploring the plight of rejected asylum seekers by Manon van Hoeckel.

Preserving tion For Kranen/Gille preserving was the basic principle of the design. In 1920 households all sorts of food were preserved in jars. Kranen/Gille used preserving ® jars on an earlier occasion, when they designed the MECK lamp for Cor Unum. Preserving, obviously, is any museum’s core task. When they visited the Museum’s depository, the duo became captivated by all kinds of curious objects Articles with Search no apparent background story. This is how they stumbled across things like a pipe, a sprayer, a flask and a glass eye, as well as the stock of historic preserving jars. Kranen/Gille ‘combed’ nine objects from the depository, giving them a new Search life by gildingArticles them and using them in the lamps.
