hello… Welcome to the Summer 21 issue of Morzine Source Magazine. This is our 17th issue and, I have to tell you, it’s one of my favourites. So whether you’re reading this magazine in our valley during your holidays, or you’re one of our regular subscribers back in the UK, know that the whole valley is ready to welcome you this summer. We’ve been working on this issue since December 2020. Global events (I’m still refusing to mention the C-word) made the likes of Danny Hart, Aimee Fuller and Escape to the Château’s Dick and Angel available for interviews and in the spirit of ‘never waste a crisis’, we took the opportunity to grill them all. I hope you enjoy meeting them on the pages that follow. There have been a flurry of new openings and developments across Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz and further afield in preparation for this summer season. Hôtel du Lac on the shores of Lac de Montriond sets high expectations for its opening in July, whilst the brand new #surfthealps WaveGarden in Sion has already been tried, tested and reviewed by Paul Vines on page 26. A brand new pump track has been created at blink-of-an-eye speed in St Jean d’Aulps this spring (meet the team who made it on page 60), and we’re more than ready for the Hive - Morzine’s brand new gym, pilates studio, café and all-round healthy space to
open this summer. Of course there’ll be no shortage of places to wine and dine in the sunshine. The Farmhouse Hôtel will open their beautiful garden for lunches on Fridays, Le Colibri is back too and there’s a brand new local called Le Local for you to enjoy. We’re in the very early stages of our own farmhouse renovation project (you can follow the thrills and spills over on @morzinehomes), which maybe explains why I’m paying particular attention to the local property market at the moment; and it seems you are too! As alpine-property.com's Gareth Jefferies explains in his regular market review on page 74, demand is currently outstripping supply in our valley, such is the desire to own a home in the mountains. I’ve showcased some beautiful homes currently for sale on page 76 to tempt you. All that remains is for me to wish you the summer holiday that you truly deserve in our valley. We’re delighted to welcome you back! And as always, you’ll find the latest news, events and recommendations on our Facebook and Instagram channels. We’ll see you there!

essentials resort
The pace of new resort developments across Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz and the surrounding valley continues unabated. In fact, it was impossible to fit everything on the pages that follow, so we’ve included a more thorough guide to what’s new and exciting on our website.
Events From the Critérium du Dauphiné to the UCI MTB World Cup, a number of excellent events are planned across our villages and valleys this summer. In order to give you the most precise, up to date information, we’ve included them all on our website events calendar, which also includes current COVID-19 regulations concerning gatherings. Head to morzinesourcemagazine. com for the latest events information. What's new in Bike Park Les Gets? Our mountain resorts generated very little revenue during the Winter 21 season. Despite this, they continue to invest in improved facilities and trails for the summer season. This is certainly true in Les Gets, where bike park shapers have overhauled the 4-cross at the bottom of La Roue Libre this spring for your riding pleasure. The team have also taken the time to give this arrival zone a facelift, making it even more spectacular. The Triple 8 has also been entirely refurbished by the Bike Park Les Gets team. Go forth and enjoy!

Nyon - Dedicated to You
A Bike Park for All Levels in Morzine
Because not everyone visits Morzine during the summer to hurtle down mountains, Nyon is now dedicated to those seeking a more relaxed pace during the sunny months. Take the free bus from Morzine or leave your car in the free car park at the base of the mountain, ride the brand new escalator to the gondola lift and enjoy the views as you head up to the Nyon Plateau. Take the Pointe de Nyon chairlift to access the 15 metre, glass-floored viewing platform perched at an altitude of 2019 metres for incredible views between Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc. Mountain flora and fauna are also abundant on Nyon, whilst the Pointe de Nyon restaurant is now home to a mini mountain farm with goats, rabbits and chickens, birds of prey and demonstrations by local shepherds. A new environmental trail has also been created next to the restaurant, complete with information boards to help you spot animals, mountains flowers and more.
Vital MTB voted Morzine’s Bike Park 8th best in the world in 2020, yet progress continues to make it more inclusive for beginner riders. With a focus on creating environmentally friendly features by hand, last summer brought us a brand new, free to enjoy, beginners area at the top of Pleney, complete with small berms and jumps for the smallest of riders. This year a new 4.5km long trail named Family has been installed and as the name suggests, it’s a gentle trail with several banked turns. At the other end of the scale, former French downhill champion and Santa Cruz ambassador Romain Paulhan has collaborated with the bike park team to redesign the red trail, now renamed Super 8. Expect a technical run with jumps and tables. There’s also two new bike wash points at the bottom of Pleney and they’re free to use with your lift pass.

La Casa Co-working in Les Gets Because #WFH is sure to loose its appeal soon, Pacome Schmitt has launched his own co-working space in Les Gets. “I’ve had discussions with friends who work from home yet find it difficult to be productive,” Pacome explains. “Home working can be distracting for many reasons and it’s very difficult to find a rhythm to separate your work life and your home life,” he continues. Inside La Casa you’ll find seven work spaces including four individual desks and three shared tables. There’s a calm, inspiring vibe throughout plus custom furniture from our favourite local furniture maker, Tristan at Tanko Designs. Pacome plans to add individual offices later this year for those who need privacy while working. Rates start at €20 per day, while weekly, monthly and annual space rental is also available. You can find out more and plan a visit by emailing info.tfcw@gmail.com or head to facebook.com/ lacasacoworking74 for further updates. La Casa Coworking is located at 781 rue du Centre in Les Gets.

Staying Out is the new Staying In Can there be a better to way enjoy the tranquility of the mountains than an overnight stay in a refuge? Now if you’re imagining day-long hikes to a remote mountain location (you can head to page 40 for those!), think again! Refuge L’Abricotine is located at the foot of the Cascade de Brochaux, which is a relatively flat and easy hike from the Lindarets bowl - it’s incredibly easy to get there, even with the smallest of children. Benjamin and his team await you for an authentic refuge experience featuring Savoyarde specialities for dinner before you bunk down in one of two dormitories. There are 24 beds in total, so why not get a group together? Discover more at refuge-abricotine.com or call +33 (0) 6 66 26 05 26.

Morzine Summer Luge
New Owners for La Croix Blanche in Les Gets
Accessible from the top of the Crusaz chairlift at the base of the Pleney and open each day between Friday 9th July and Sunday 29th August, 10.30am to 6pm, Morzine’s 800m long, 16 turn summer luge is arguably just as fun to watch as it is to ride. Children aged between three and eight must join an adult for the ride and we guarantee fun for all the family. We’d recommend planning a luge trip in the afternoon when the queues will be shorter but we don’t recommend trying to luge in the rain!
Located at the foot of the slopes of Les Gets’ Chavannes mid-station, the sunny terrace of La Croix Blanche has been a Source favourite for many years. Summer or winter, the views are incredible! Under new ownership from this summer season, the Alpine Restaurants group will instal a brand new menu under the guidance of Michelin-trained group head chef Anthony Trezy. Come autumn, the restaurant will undergo a full renovation ahead of the winter season, in keeping with the chic, contemporary style of Vina Annapurna (also open this summer in Les Gets) and La Bokka (opens December 21), which are also operated by the Alpine Restaurants group. What can we expect on the menu this summer? Tuna tataki, marinated soya beans and wasabi coulis for starters! To make a reservation call +33 (004 50 75 80 66

New Trails in Avoriaz 1800 It’s been a busy spring for the shapers of Avoriaz MTB. Not only have the existing trails received a good once over, new routes have been constructed for your downhilling pleasure. Hattock on the Super Morzine has been extended via a new black trail from the top of the Zore lift. You’ll also find two brand new, hand-shaped trails over in the Seraussaix sector. Named Wallibi (red) and Goupil (blue), they split off from the Fourmiz trail and rejoin it at the bottom of the Seraussaix lift. The creation of new hiking trails in Lindarets means the Chemin des Brochaux is now dedicated to bikes and renamed ‘The Goat’. It’ll be further enhanced this summer, while the chemin de la Cabana aux Garde also becomes an official bike trail.
NEW OWNERSHIP
Avoriaz 1800 continues its dedication to enduro and e-bikes with ‘The Loop’. Undulating from Avoriaz to the bottom of the Zore lift and back, The Loop makes use of existing trails but will be clearly signposted. You’ll also discover that the Avoriaz MTB Trail Progression scale in partnership with Santa Cruz Bicycles has been updated and split into Tech and Flow trails to help riders better understand their progression and trial choice.
Let Them Eat Cake If you’ve ever lusted after a slice of delicious, homemade cake midmountain-hike, you’ll be very excited about this news. Local hike specialists DayAway Adventures have joined forces with local bakers Apeeling Cakes to launch Cream Tea Hikes. As the name suggests, Vivien and Jason from DaysAway will accompany you on a guided hike in our beautiful mountains and you’ll enjoy freshly made scones, jam and creamy creme fraiche along the way. To book your Cream Tea Hike, head to daysawayadventures.com/half-day-private-hikes for more details.
La Croix Blanche OUVERTURE JUILLET 2021 / OPENING JULY 2021 Our Mountains in Your Home Photographer Jacquie Cutler has been taking stunning pictures of our local landscapes for many years. Inspired during the first lockdown by requests for her images as prints, Jacquie launched Finesse Art, an online gallery featuring almost 200 of her favourite local photos. From a beautifully frozen Lake Montriond to a refreshing sunrise over Avoriaz, Jacquie’s work features some of our most iconic viewpoints and they’re all available in a selection of sizes and finishes to suit your home. In a year when we’ve all had our travel wings clipped, decorating your home with views from your favourite destination is a must. Jacquie even provides a digital in-situ service so you can see her artwork on your wall before you buy. Head to finesse-art.com for more details.

This season is all change for Danny. The 29-year-old from Redcar on the North-East coast of England joins the CUBE Factory Racing Team with high hopes moving back to the top of the world circuit rankings. It’s also his first full season as a dad while the potential for further COVID-chaos looms large on the horizon. These are indeed complicated times for a professional athlete.
Danny has been competing on the international circuit since the age of 16. He was World Champion in both 2011 and 2016 and is perhaps most famous for his performance on ridiculously steep and muddy trails. During the 2019 season he finished on the podium in every round of the MTB World Cup before welcoming daughter Sadie with wife Sophia. I wonder how the move to CUBE came amount? “I was told by Jordi (Cortes, global race department manager at Fox Racing) that CUBE were looking for a top five rider, so I reached out. The CUBE Factory Racing Team are a very professional outfit with big ambitions. We made it happen and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s all started!” Cube Team Manager Matthias Ascherl clearly agrees. “After we had permanently developed at CUBE over the last 4 years on the TWO15, it was the next step for us to sign a top rider. With Danny we have really made a lucky strike. The collaboration has worked excellently from day one. We have already been testing several times and it looks very promising for the new season. Danny is one of the most consistent riders and we would be happy about one or two podium finishes.” This certainly seems like a fresh start for all involved, especially as CUBE have strengthened their partnership with Les Gets bike park. “I would love to spend more time in the Portes du Soleil and I really like the idea of basing myself out there throughout the summer at some point,” Danny explains. “I am hoping that being member of the CUBE team will open new windows in Les Gets for sure, but what with COVID and Brexit at the moment, it’s not so easy.” We haven’t had an uninterrupted MTB season since 2019 and Danny is the first to admit that his 2020 season didn’t go to plan. So what are his goals and objectives >> 18

for this season? “I want to get back to the top,” he explains. “Last year was not good for me, I had a lot going on. Moving forward, everything with my team and the people around me is really good, so I’m well up for racing, my new bike is awesome and that really excites me,” Danny continues. And of course that new team now includes wife Sophie and daughter Sadie. Has fatherhood changed things for Danny? “For the most part my life has not really changed,” Danny tells me. “My wife Sophia is brilliant and is doing a superb job with Sadie. She really doesn’t rely on me, so this enables me to be travelling around, riding and training,” he explains. It certainly sounds like business as usual then?! “I think maybe my rest days aren’t as restful as before! We use these days to get out and do family stuff, which I really enjoy. It takes my head away from racing and training, which is a good thing.” As I write, it’s perhaps inevitable that COVID-19 will cause some alternations, cancellations and postponements to the UCI MTB race calendar this summer. The Fort William round in late May has just been cancelled, while Les Gets’ steps up to host both the downhill and cross country World Cup in early July. But if Danny could score just one win this season, which would it be? “Before Fort William was cancelled, I would have said Fort William!” he tells me. “So now I will have to say Les Gets for the World Cup because of its legendary status in downhill racing. But I’d also love to win the World Champs in Val di Sole." (They’re currently scheduled for the end of August 2021).
“MY REST DAYS AREN’T AS RESTFUL AS BEFORE! WE USE THESE DAYS TO GET OUT AND DO FAMILY STUFF. IT TAKES MY HEAD AWAY FROM RACING AND TRAINING.”
Aspiring riders, both young and old, are justified in their admiration of Danny Hart. He’s an unquestionably successful British rider and he’s used his influence to create opportunities for others. In his hometown of Redcar for example, Danny joined forces with other professional athletes to push forward a £31million leisure centre project for the benefit of the town. And then there’s Danny Hart’s Descend Bike Park in nearby Bishop Auckland, which is widely regarded as the North East of England’s top downhill bike park. I wonder how that came about? “The previous owner had been there for a long time. My family and I thought it would be a good idea to take it over when the opportunity arose,” Danny explains. “My parents run it mainly, one day I hope to get up there to help them! But for now, racing is my main priority.” And returning to the subject of admiration, who did Danny look up to whilst growing up? “Lots of people! Stefan Everts, Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, Steve Peat, Valentine Rossi… I’m a big fan of motocross racing!” Those who love the sport of downhill mountain biking will remember Danny’s huge tail whip near the end of his 2011 winning run in Champery. And in a career that’s included so many notable podiums, it can’t be easy to name a standout highlight. But I asked him to try… “Winning the World Championships in Champery in 2011 was definitely my biggest achievement so far. Yet winning the same comp five years later, this time in Val di Sole on conditions that were totally opposite to 2011 was also pretty huge!” I think it’s fair to say that Danny Hart is expecting big things from 2021. “More World Cups and more race wins,” he hopes. Should the continuing global health crisis make that difficult, you might find Danny sitting on the chairlift next to you in the Portes du Soleil this summer. 20

Meet Rosie at Naturally Nuts - Rosie’s homemade peanut butter and chocolate spread are legendary in Morzine! Be warned, a lifetime’s supply will become essential!
I abandoned my corporate life in Scotland for the Alpine dream in Morzine. It was a leap of faith, but here I am! There’s a really strong community and support network here in the Vallee d’Aulps, I’m proud to call this place home. I’ve never been part of a community that cares so much about the surrounding environment in addition to making visitors and guests feel so welcome upon arrival. It’s from here that La Box was born. La Box is a curated welcome pack of high quality food products made by local artisans and I deliver
"Hey, I'm Rosie, lover of all things nutty. After moving to the Valley in 2019, I found it difficult to find natural, tasty peanut made locally. Thus Naturally Nuts was born! I’m a firm believer that the best foods are often the simplest so I aim to create luxurious, mouthwatering blends handcrafted with just a few high-quality ingredients. We can help spread the word that food matters - to our health, our happiness and to the wellbeing of our planet.” Meet Tasha at Fleur - I truly believe Tasha is Morzine's finest cookie maker! These cookies are mouth-wateringly delicious and I know you’re going to love them! "Hi, I'm Tasha, a self-taught baker from Australia. During the first lockdown in France in March 2020, I used that time as an opportunity to refine my skills and completed a pastry course online with the renowned Puff The Bakery in London covering pastries, doughs, custards, chocolate, choux and soon to be viennoiserie. Working with La Box has been great fun to create the ultimate chocolate chip cookie for their customers!” Meet Kat at Kitty’s Hot Sauce - I can honestly say, this is the best hot sauce I've ever tasted! Initially she just made it for friends, then over lunch one day we discussed her making it in batches for La Box. It’s too good not to share!
"Hi, I'm Kat, a hot sauce lover who felt there wasn't anything on offer locally that was fruity with a kick. So I decided to make my own using locally supplied produce. After many trials, I reached the perfect recipe. I aim to ignite your taste buds with Kitty's Hot Sauce!” Meet Frances at Froglet Paintings - Frances is a beautifully talented Alpine Artist. She’s recreated one of my own photos of Pointe d’Uble at sunrise and designed something very special for La Box for guests to take home. "Whilst in the mountains, I've seen awesome sunrises, insane clouds and epic views. I try to capture the magic of those moments in paintings so I can remember it when I can't be outside, enjoying adventures. All of my paintings have stories behind them, I hope they’ll inspire you during your own holiday!” Meet Bela & Jo at The Chef’s Cellar - Morzine's finest wine suppliers, I am super excited to work with these guys. I’m always spoiled for choice, but with their expert advice, we’ve selected three stunning wines that you are going to love! "We are a Morzine based wine wholesaler supplying local bars, restaurants, chalet companies and La Box, as well as private clients. Joe is a professional chef and has spent over a decade working in the wine regions of France, pairing meals to carefully selected wines from local vineyards.”
them to your holiday accommodation in advance of your arrival. La Box gives you the tastes and smells of our wonderful valley, launching your holiday in a multi-sensory yet sustainable way. I collect, reuse or recycle every element of packing included in La Box. There are many talented, creative and artistic people here and I’m always looking to meet new suppliers who are passionate about their produce and sustainability. Below I’ll introduce you to some of the makers, bakers and suppliers that currently feature in La Box. I hand-pick the contents based on seasonal availability and this summer I’ll add both a Brunch Box and a Luxury Box to my collection. Also, look out Chamonix and Verbier… La Box is coming soon! 24

We’re in luck, it’s warm and sunny and the excitement is palpable as we load his board and wetsuit into the van. We set off for the nearest bakery and, patisseries acquired, I point us towards the Col du Corbier and our final destination, Sion. It’s a short, easy drive whether you choose to go via Evian and cross the border at SaintGingolph, or follow our route via Morgins. Just one hour and thirty-five minutes later, Christophe and I arrive at Alaïa Bay. This is mainland Europe’s first WaveGardenpowered wavepool and soon it will open to the public. Walking in through the doors of the large glass-fronted building, I get my first glance of the pool at Alaïa Bay and the smiling face of our host for the day, Vincent. The double height, polished concrete entrance hall opens up on both sides. To my left, the in-house Boardriders surf store is under construction. Above us there’s a floating carousel showcasing surfboards from some of the worlds biggest names. On our right, stairs lead up to the restaurant Twin Fin and the viewing deck. Vincent takes us on a quick tour of the facilities before showing us through to the incredibly well equipped rental area. The use of wetsuits and boards is included in the price of your session here, so there are no hidden costs and even the coaching is free. You can also forget about any >>

Each is washed and dried between users. The facility also hosts its own in-house shaping bay. Here Portuguese shaper Carlos is on hand to make the board of your dreams and you can even take a board building class! Christophe and I have brought our own boards, however we both take up their generous offer of a thicker wetsuit, boots and gloves. The pool is currently dead calm and Gabriel talks us through the how the pool works and what to expect. As experienced surfers we didn’t need a lesson, but they go one better when Emilien guides us through a quick warm up Yoga session on the grass. We’re ready but as I paddle out across the flat water, any calm feelings are quickly banished and replaced with giant butterflies. Once ‘out back’ Gabriel shows us how and where to position ourselves for taking off on and in between waves. More important though, is the protocol for when I inevitably fall off my board. A quick nod from Gabriel to the lifeguard stood on the edge of the pool wall and the machine gets underway. Less than thirty seconds later, I’m dropping into my first wave of 2021, yet I’m 350km from the sea. 28

The waves we are surfing are advanced level and about shoulder high, one of the many types of wave available. They feel solid and very similar to an ocean wave. The waves come in ‘sets’ just like in the ocean, except every wave here is almost identical. On this setting there are seven waves per set, then a pause for the water to calm itself before another set starts. This lasts for approximately 55 minutes, after which both Christophe and I are exhausted. Unlike in the ocean there’s no time here to stop and admire the scenery between waves, which is a shame as we’re surrounded by the majestic snow capped peaks of nearby ski resorts. We exit the pool and sit in the sunshine to chat through the session. One problem is clear - our fitness, having not surfed for four and six months respectively.

Children’s prices begin at CHF 94 (approx 85€). • Multi-session prices for 5, 10 or 20 trips are also available. • There’s even an Alpine Surf Club, where members can access the wave pool outside of regular opening hours, attend night sessions and special events too. we’re all having the best time. Very quickly one of the journalists masters the art. We watch his smile grow as he cruises along his first perfect little wave. It’s clear that the team here have got the beginner experience dialled. After another hour in the water we are finished in every sense of the word. We thank our coaches, promising to be back for another session when they open. Gabriel reveals that he met Alaïa Bay’s founder through surfing and it’s good to know the boss surfs too! Christophe and I get changed and head upstairs where we are treated to a well-deserved and delicious late lunch on the huge viewing deck in front of the restaurant and overlooking the pool. There’s no rest for our three coaches though. We watch them take to the water with the rest of the team of over thirty new coaches who will be working at the pool. As we drive home reflecting on the day’s experiences, the buzz is real. I still can’t wait for my next trip to the coast, but there’s a caveat now. We can surf whenever we like.

Pre-COVID, if asked to contemplate the national closure of restaurants in a country so globally famous for its food, the prospect would have been unimaginable. It’s no secret that dining out is a national pastime here in France. Restaurants are the backbone of family life, social life and more. Yet “do you remember your last meal in a restaurant?” became a much-discussed topic for those of us missing our mountain meals. 30

Since you asked, my most memorable ‘last supper’ involved a delicious Biska Burger and a shared bottle of Sancerre early one evening at La Biskatcha at Hôtel la Marmotte in Les Gets. The dining formula here has been perfected in recent years to include three different experiences with three different menus all under one roof. La Pivotte is an atmospheric Savoyarde chalet within the hotel, serving exquisite, traditional dishes and regional specialities. It’s a ‘must-do’ holiday experience. La Piste Noire is a fine dining experience focused on locally-sourced and seasonal produce in a chic, bistronomic setting, while La Biskatcha is a more relaxed mountain brasserie and grill with a casual, family-friendly vibe, which suites my tribe perfectly.

In a month when he’d usually be plating up hundreds of meals a day to happy holiday makers, La Biskatcha Head Chef Loïck Deschamps tells me how he’s been keeping busy. Of course, it's been a long time since any of us have been able to enjoy a meal in a restaurant. How did you spend this time? “During this time, I cooked a lot, for my family and myself. I tried out new dishes for the restaurant and spent time discovering small producers that I did not know before, around my home and around the region. This allowed me to get closer to these people, build relationships and to discover new type of cuisine. When we know where our food comes from, we respect the products more, and this helps me to highlight our local cuisine as well as our producers.” Tell me about the style of food you serve in the restaurant and where do your influences come from?

“In our restaurant La Biskatcha, we seek to serve creative but simple cuisine. I mix several influences from bistronomic, to gastronomic, through to street food in pursuit of original dishes, but accessible to all. We like to play on new flavors and atypical dressings.” Of course, using seasonal and local products is important. How do you use ingredients from the region in your dishes? “We seek to take the maximum number of ingredients from as many small local producers as possible. This is always the ultimate objective. Sometimes, because of production capacity at these small producers, this can become complicated because of the volume we need for our restaurant. However, this point is really close to our hearts and so we always offer ‘specials’ and ‘suggestions’ throughout the year in addition to our regular menu. It is also possible that we include certain products on the menu for an entire season.”
Alpine Welcome Boxes delivered directly to your guest accommodation, packed with locally sourced essential and luxury items for soon-to-be impressed guests
When you are not working in your own kitchen, where do you like to eat? “When restaurants are actually open, I like to eat in venues run by young chefs. I'm always curious and looking for new things and new flavors, so I find this inspiring.” Can you give us some clues about the new dishes on the menu for this summer season? What can we expect? “We’re always tweaking the menu, right up until the final moment. But, to give you some clues, we are going to offer a lamb-based dish, with several different cooking options, and which will include several different parts of the animal. The lambs will come from several local producers, all located within 30km of the restaurant – we’re so lucky to have this on our doorstep! We’ve also discovered new local vegetable producers to complement all of our dishes, which I am excited about.” Book your table at Restaurant la Biskatcha by calling +33 (0)4 50 84 55 35

power LEG
ONLY
Interview by amie Henderson
The prospect of avoiding all motorised transport for the whole of 2021 seems unachievable on the face of it. We live in the mountains, 20cm of snow often falls overnight, people have jobs, commutes, friends to see, shopping to do. There are hills, many hills, to overcome. “This year I have taken the leap to completely cut out all motorised transport and only travel where my legs can take me,” explains Camille Robson. “This means only going places on foot, by bike and occasionally on skis - though ski touring only, as the ski lifts are motorised and therefore out of bounds!”
I can and can’t do based on distance. I try to be more organised in my shopping to avoid having to go too often. I set off for work earlier than I would if I had a car and I take a change of clothes with me. There’s also some extra organising to be done each evening, but that’s all mostly become a normal part of my day to day routine now.”
Living in Morzine and working a 9-5 in Les Gets, Camille had already accepted her commute would be by bike during six months of the year. “The busses don’t run between Morzine and Les Gets during the interseason,” Camille explains. “And then I realised that it wasn’t actually that bad!” But ultimately, it was feelings of guilt that that inspired Camille to fully commit and ditch all mortised transport this year. “I didn’t feel like I was playing my part in bringing around the change that is needed in our society to help curb global warming. I wasn’t able to be involved in protests easily or often, I didn’t have the time to commit to volunteering in an association. I didn’t feel like my small lifestyle changes carried enough weight by themselves.” But how does this work in practical terms? For me, the prospect of snow clearing to get the car out is bad enough - imagine cycling between Morzine and Les Gets early each morning in the snow and sub-zero temperatures! “Somehow my legs seem to be recovering without me having to do that much so far. That might change once I’ve taken on some slightly bigger adventures this summer!” Camille explains. “But for everyday life, it means changing my perspective as to what 32
leg power only
It’s mid-March when Camille and I meet to talk about her ‘experiment’. The days are getting warmer and longer, it hasn’t snowed for a little while. I wonder what was the worst day? “On the whole, I’ve been surprised by how relatively easy and painless it’s been so far,” she tells me. “Except
for the days with strong winds or heavy snowfall, it doesn’t feel much different to any other time of the year,” she believes. “Some mornings it got close to -12 degrees on my journey to work, I’d be all wrapped up then melting half way up the road to Les Gets!” “The hardest day was actually just before I started the challenge. I tried ski touring over Pleney and down into Les Gets as my commute to work. Between 40 and 50cm of fresh snow had fallen overnight, so this ended up being a four hour struggle on ungroomed pistes and the descent was just as bad! Needless to say I was late for work and have now taken up snowshoeing to work on those really snowy days!” Camille isn’t doing this for the good of her health. She’s raising awareness and funds for three causes “as they represent the three levels I believe we need to act on to effectively bring about the change we need in our lives and society to actively tackle climate change and curb global warming; individual change, national change and global change.” Our valley’s very own Montagne Verte is a charitable association with bold objectives to provider greener solutions to the residents of our local towns and villages. “They are working with local government, businesses and the community to make Morzine and the area a more environmentally responsible destination.” Secondly, les Amis de la Terre France works at a national level, fighting some of the systemic issues relating to global warming. “As well as raising awareness and educating, they also partake in peaceful protests, encouraging politicians and industries to implement impactful change.” The

third and final organisation to benefit from Camille’s challenge is Envol Vert. “They focus on preserving rainforests and biodiversity, both by working with the local population and by highlighting some of the multinational and French businesses who capitalise on deforestation.” Inspired by Camille’s drive to make a difference, and conscious that my short car journeys are part of the problem, how can I, in a practical way, be a better mountain dweller? “I think we can mostly improve by shifting the way we see travel and what we consider as essential journeys,” Camille believes. “It starts with changing our perspective, I think. Using public transport much more, and if public transport is lacking, we need to voice this frustration to our elected officials and make demands for it to be improved.” With each turn of her pedals, Camille is shining a light on the challenges we face as a planet. But who’s looking after her? “I have an amazing support crew,” she explains. Phew! “Firstly, my boyfriend Warren, who is doing almost as much of this challenge as I am! He’s following me to work at 5am on snowy days, taking pictures to help me promote the whole experiment and he’s been literally behind me from the get go, as have all my friends and family.”

Follow us on Facebook Restaurant La Biskatcha Camille and I agree that to call her undertaking this year a ‘challenge’, just doesn’t cut it. She prefers ‘experiment’, and while she’s creating awareness and raising important funds, I wonder if she’s made any personal discoveries so far? “The big one was when I hit a bit of a wall, had a bit of a cry and then a chat to myself. I’ve been trying to prove that you can change a massive aspect of your life without any kind of compromise. But the reality is, I can’t cram in all the things that I used to while cycling everywhere, plus documenting it and at the same time working full time. I’ve had to become a lot more balanced about what I take on at weekends and I’m hoping to discover that I’m not sacrificing too much this year!” And surely the hardest days are behind her now? “I no longer see my mode of transport as a hindrance or a nuisance. In a similar way to someone who’s used to flying everywhere in a private helicopter might adjust to a more comparatively limiting car. We simply shift our idea of ‘normal’.” Should we all give it a go? “I’m not saying that everyone should give up motorised transport, but I do think everyone should push their comfort zones. You might be pleasantly surprised by what you find!” Not content with replacing motorised transport with the power of her own legs to get the day to day stuff done, Camille is also planning a big summer of cycling. “I’m planning to cycle over to my parents on the west coast of France, which will be over 850km each way,” she tells me. “I’m also hoping to cycle over the mountains and spend a bit of time in Italy, plus a few weekend trips in the local area too.” Now you might imagine that Camille is a seasoned cyclist, as she certainly sounds like one. “18 months ago I cycled from Morzine to Lake Montriond for the first time. I had to have three proper breaks to make it up there. I never imagined I’d be doing something like this!” Any regrets? “That I didn’t start cycling around earlier! It’s easy to swap out so many of my normal weekly journeys, and it’s keeping me fit! Double win!” Discover More: montagnevertemorzine.com // amisdelaterre.org // envol-vert.org

Aimee Fuller A NEW CHAPTER
Interview by amie Henderson
Two-time Olympian Aimee Fuller announced back in January that she was retiring from professional snowboarding, but I’d honestly imagined that she had another Olympics in her. Aged just 29 and with the Beijing Winter Games one year away, is she calling an end to her competitive career too soon? 34

“I’ve had an amazing run at snowboarding. I never expected to compete at the X Games, to represent Team GB twice at the Olympics. These things were never on the map for me and it’s amazing where following your dream and trusting your gut can take you. But, I don’t want one thing to define me. And there’s so much more to snowboarding than a list of results in your bio.” Snowboarding isn’t one of those sports where athletes train relentlessly and focus entirely on results. Perhaps it’s for this reason that Aimee finds it easier than I’d imagined to move away from life as a professional athlete. The best bits will still be there, whether there’s a competition or not. “Snowboarding is about being in the mountains, connecting with special people, of passion and getting creative,” she explains. “I’m bringing it back to the roots and the reasons why I actually started snowboarding in the first place. That really excites me.”
“I don’t want one thing to define me.” Aimee announced her retirement via Instagram and I wondered how she felt once the news was out there in the world? “Honestly, relief. I’ve been overwhelmed by the gratitude from those thanking me for inspiring them to start snowboarding. I’m super grateful for the support from my sponsors too.” But before we draw a line under Aimee’s professional snowboarding career (because that’s what we’re here to do), I want to know what the highlights were. “The early days in Morzine, staying at Star Ski Chalets and throwing backflips with Stef Nurding and Gilly Seagrave in the baby park,” is her first highlight. “Riding with the Roxy crew out in Japan,” comes a close second. “Having an X Games in Europe in 2013 was really special. My family came out to Tignes to support me and I have some amazing memories.” She also became the first female snowboarder to land a double backflip in competition during the comp. “Qualifying for my second Olympics and getting to share the pre-Games training adventures with my Mum in Colorado is something I’ll never forget.”

But what’s next? Aimee’s excitement, energy and all-round positivity suggest that she’s got a new plan brewing… this isn’t the end. It’s the beginning. “It’s fun to set new goals, explore other passions,” and I couldn’t agree more. After the Sochi Games in 2014, Aimee became a regular on our TV screens, hosting features for BBC Ski Sunday, Red Bull TV and for the Olympic Channel, for whom she ran her very first marathon… in North Korea. “I love the variety of broadcasting and I’m excited to do more of this,” she explains. “It was raw, it was real, and I don’t regret one minute of sharing my excitement,” Aimee explains when I ask her about THAT BBC commentary box moment with Ed Leigh and Tim Warwood at the Sochi Games in 2014. The UK’s Guardian newspaper described the trio as ‘an exhausted sobbing mess… and it was brilliant’, having watched Jenny Jones become Great Britain’s first ever Olympic medalist on snow. “Let’s be honest, if your best mate won a medal at the Olympics, are you going to rein in your excitement?” Erm, no actually. “People loved it, it was a day in history for Jenny and for British snowboarding.” And then the penny drops… is this where Aimee caught the bug for broadcasting? >> Breakfast | Brunch | Salads | Wraps | Dinners

“For sure it was,” she replies. “I felt super comfortable in that environment, I tuned out the audience and focused on what was happening. I love the adrenaline rush of live television. It’s almost like competing - anything can happen!” It’s March when Aimee and I speak and the UK is in its third (and hopefully final) lockdown, which is clearly fuelling her plan. The Monday Mile is Aimee’s new podcast for digital magazine Invision and she’s working hard on the launch. “I’ll host a different guest over a socially-distanced one mile walk to discuss their motivation hacks and tips. The objective is to help you start your week strong!” The guest line-up is certainly strong; imagine Aimee combined with the likes of radio presenter and journalist Vic Hope, former Royal Marine and adventurer Jason Carl Fox and footballer Wayne Bridge to name just a few. “I can’t wait to dive into this and keep the positive vibes alive!”. Anyone who follows Aimee on social media will know that she’s also a qualified yoga teacher. I wonder if that’s been helpful during the chaos and uncertainty of the last 12 months? “Time and time again I’m grateful for the practise of yoga - it’s both transportable and scalable, time-wise,” she explains. “Over an 11-year career my body has weathered some impact. Yoga makes me feel good both physically and mentally - it’s a game changer!” Before the pandemic kicked off, Aimee co-hosted yoga and snowboarding retreats with Our Retreat, providers of luxury yoga and wellness breaks. “Hopefully we can bring one to Morzine next winter!”. And then there’s cycling. “MyCycle is a campaign I’m fronting to encourage people to cycle 100, 200, 300 miles or more over a 30 day period it’s a great way to keep you motivated through the darker, colder lockdown months and it’s all in aid of the British Heart Foundation.” There's no doubt the services of Aimee Fuller will be called upon for future commentary projects, especially as we get closer to another Olympic year. That must mean keeping a close eye on new winter sports talent coming through the ranks? “It certainly does, and right now I’m watching Mia Brooks.” As our regular readers will know, 13 year old Mia is no stranger to the pages of this magazine, she even wrote a lockdown diary for us. “She is ace and has her head screwed on, it’s going to be fun to watch her progress. I took a few laps with her in LAAX this year and she’s got great board control, plus a really solid family around her, which is key at such a young age.” “It’s all about time on snow, and for sure she’s doing her time!” Aimee adds.

OK, one final question about life as a professional snowboarder, I promise. What was the best bit? “When your sport is also your job. It’s amazing to turn a passion into a profession and to literally live your dream. I did that, and I’m forever grateful to Roxy for being with me from day one. They showed me what was possible, they saw my potential and they let me evolve into the snowboarder I am today.” “Travelling the world, Australia, New Zealand every year for 11 years, it’s just been crazy. Sport has an amazing way of breaking down societal barriers; it doesn’t matter where you are from, you’re instantly welcomed and this gives you a different sense of confidence, which I am grateful for.” And what about life right now? “Exploring other sports. As an athlete I could never do long distance running, but running the London Marathon with my mum was one for the bucket list. Plus I get to take a few more days off the gym, enjoy the odd slice of pizza - the balance is good now!” 36

You’ll also need appropriate walking attire and footwear, as well as cash for a coffee or lunch stop. Always take any rubbish home with you and dispose of responsibly. *The guide times indicated in these routes represent an average walking pace of 3km/hr. You should also add on rest stops, picnic breaks, and of course time taken to enjoy the views! ** Whilst Alpine cows are very gentle, do not get too close to them, they can be unpredictable and are very protective of their young. Always give them space if you see them on your hike. DaysAway Adventures recognises that going into mountain areas is hazardous and, when adventurous activities are added, the hazards are inevitably increased. This implies a potential risk of injury or, in extreme circumstances, loss of life. Anyone considering taking part in a hike suggested by us needs to consider this very seriously and to take responsibility for their participation and acknowledge and accept these risks. You should always check you have appropriate insurance cover. If you are not comfortable with navigation, consider hiring a qualified hiking guide. 40

Follow the path away from Les Linderets village and the parking by the lifts, crossing the stream and then keeping the stream on your left. Check out the amazing mountains surrounding you, go for a paddle and take a picnic. The waterfall is especially spectacular after rainfall and can be photographed from many angles! To return to the car park either walk back along the stream or follow the off road track to the right of the Refuge l’Abricotine. Extend your walk: Visit Les Linderets village and feed the goats or have a drink at one of the bars or restaurants. Want to walk further? Follow the path from the village down the ski piste (caution, a little steep in places!), cross the river and keep the river on your right and finish at the Ardent car park, before taking the bus back to town.

From the viewpoint, head back up to the cattlegrid and follow the track back around the mountain, always heading in the direction of the telecabine cables. There are a number of paths to take you back to the start point but we recommend heading towards and walking under the telecabine cables and following the zig zag path down. the cascade de brochaux

Day 1 From the parking, head towards Lac des Mines d’Or and follow the single track tarmac road through the forest. After 1.2km leave the road and take the small path on your right that will bring you down to walk along the river. At the end of the path turn right and take the bridge over the river (If you miss the entrance to the path, the alternative is to turn right a little further down the first stony jeep track that you come to, which will lead you to the same bridge). Keep following the track upwards through the woods and an alpage (an open field with wild flowers and possibly cows). Keep to this main track until you get to the top! Start heading downhill on the same track and after 50 metres, take the track on the left, heading towards the Golèse refuge - it’s the only building you can see here. Day 2 Leave the Golèse refuge on the same track that you arrived and turn right back down the hill. Part way back down, take the obvious track on your right, signposted GR5 and Chardonniere (if you get back to the buildings you have gone too far). Follow the GR5 though the boulder fields, (this is prime marmot territory!) and the forest and turn left to head down to the Chardonniere refuge for a drink, a toilet stop, to buy fresh cheese and top up your drinking water from the trough. From Chardonniere, head back on to the path that you left and turn left, still following the GR5, heading uphill towards the forest. Once you cross the wide stream, keep following the track to the right that takes you uphill through the forest. When you walk through the electric fence gateway, keep following the path straight ahead, it will be going slightly downhill. When you see the cross on your right on a small hill, why not head up towards it for a great view and maybe a picnic? Head downhill towards the buildings of the farm - Chalets des Freterolle. This is a superb place for lunch although it is closed on a Monday and you are strongly advised to book if you would like to eat here. You can visit the goats and the pigs and buy fresh local cheese at a great price. From here, keep following the stony track downhill until you see the beautiful Lac des Mines d’Or. Pet the donkeys, have a rest and grab a drink or ice cream at the restaurant and top up your water at the trough. Just past the restaurant there is a public toilet. There is a small car park on your left and just after on your right, look out for the small footpath that will lead you down through the forest. Once you meet the tarmac road, turn right and keep heading down hill back to the bus stop / your car. 42

“As a silk merchant after the second world war, my Grandfather François would travel across France and Europe selling his wares. He first visited Morzine as a child in 1933 and returned regularly from his home in Paris for family holidays. He’d stay at the Grand Hôtel (today it is of course named l’Hauturière) and became very passionate for the village alongside skating and skiing. But then he fell ill with tuberculosis and spent a whole year in hospital in Passy. Motivated by a healthier life in the mountains, surrounded by the sports that he loved, upon his recovery, my Grandfather left Paris for Morzine. He put down his suitcase in 1952 and decided to transform one of Morzine’s chalets into one of the very first catered chalets.
This is where my family’s Morzine story begins. We’re three generations now and hospitality runs in our blood. Having operated his chalet at the bottom of Morzine’s Pleney lift for two years, François bought a piece of land on the sunniest side of the valley where at the time there was almost no construction. My Grandmother Catherine joined him the following year and they opened Hôtel Le Dahu on 17th December, 1955. The hotel was rated two stars, with 18 bedrooms, a restaurant, a games room and dormitories, which allowed
all of the guests’ children to sleep together. They also created a vegetable garden for summer produce, purchased fresh food from local producers and organised activities in the natural environment to teach guests about rural and mountain life. Of course Morzine in 1955 was very different to Morzine in 2021. The village was considered a ‘station climatique’ and so was popular with those looking to improve their health,
benefit from the fresh air and take some clean oxygen into their lungs. Tourists arrived by train and bus during the winter season, as often the village was difficult to access by car. They’d enjoy pursuits such as snowshoeing and skating during short trips and in the summer season, François and Catherine welcomed guests seeking cooler temperatures for longer periods. Clean air was taken for granted in those days, tourism operated in a sustainable way without even realising it.
In 1985 my father Benoît and my mother Anne took over our family hotel and they faced some major changes from the very beginning. The Portes du Soleil was growing quickly, mountain restaurants were opening and skiing growing in popularity. My mother and father made some important decisions to develop the hotel, including building an outdoor swimming pool for the summer season and adding new services such as ski guides and private ski instructors for our winter guests. As a family business, it was obvious to add family-friendly facilities too. In 1990 they embarked upon a huge expansion and renovation project, giving us the large, beautiful chalet overlooking Morzine that we know today, with 37 bedrooms and four stars. Over the years Hôtel Le Dahu has welcomed thousands of holiday makers to Morzine, but in 2004, faced with the obvious signs of climate change in our mountains, Benoît decided to take stock. He placed the needs of our environment at the centre of our operations, ensuring there’s an ecological approach to everything we do. Having grown up in the hotel, it’s now my turn to join my father in our family
business and of course we face a new set of challenges these days for this third generation of Hôtel Le Dahu. The concepts of conviviality, authenticity, quality and a genuine passion for service are still the top priorities for our guests but now sustainability is paramount too. Operating quite a large hotel in the mountains in the most ecological way takes time, careful thought and, of course, money. To share our vision and our procedures with others, we’ve developed our own website to chart our progress. On www.franca-nature.com you’ll discover our own sustainability policy, social responsibilities and more. There’s an English version coming soon! As we enrich this website with our own experiences, we hope it will prove a useful resource to others beginning their sustainability journey. Each year we implement one or two new sustainability projects and we’re proud to be founding members of Montagne Verte Morzine. My family has a long history of planning for sustainable tourism, and perhaps its for this reason that I’m often asked about the future. What does the future look like for ski resorts? I hope that the winter sports resorts of the future will offer several ways to enjoy the mountains, rather than simply skiing. As mountain professionals, it’s the responsibility of all in our valley to make the
mountain known for its different activities. This is important not just for the environment, but also our economy. The ‘white gold’ on which we’ve all traded for generations will become rare in medium altitude resorts. If we wish to continue to appreciate the mountains, we must renew ourselves. We can all do something to reduce our impact on the environment - we can all lessen the load on our planet. It’s not too late, but we must act now. We must commit our resort to a path that is both economically sensible and environmentally virtuous. Buying local products to help our local producers and artisans, turning off our lights at night, recycling our waste, creating awareness amongst our our guests, showing them why our mountains are important and helping them to appreciate them in a different way. Not one person can ignore this responsibility. The last 12 months have been difficult for all, but they’ve given us an opportunity to reflect on our priorities and renew our sustainability objectives here at Hôtel Le Dahu. We’re looking forward to welcoming our guests back, allowing them to reconnect with family and friends and of course, rediscover the natural environment that we all know and love.”
Hôtel Le Dahu**** is located on the hillside above Morzine and offers stunning valley views to guests. Open during the summer and winter seasons, facilities are available to both hotel guests and non-residents alike. They include an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a restaurant and terrace overlooking the rooftops of Morzine, plus a luxury spa with treatment rooms and wellness area. Discover more at www.dahu.com
coffee WHAT IF IT WAS MY JOB? By amie henderson
Given the correct conditions, anything can grow. Take the coffee bean for instance. In tropical climates, with rich soils and ample sunshine, the coffea plant thrives, producing those beans that we all know and love in abundance. The same can be said of an idea. A seed is planted, it’s nurtured and supported, often through really difficult circumstances, until the time is right. And for Cafés Vorlaz, that time is now. Conceptualised during France’s very first lockdown and perfected over the 12 months that followed, Cafés Vorlaz is a brand new speciality coffee house located right here in our valley. Sustainability is the cornerstone of this new brand - there’ll be zero waste from their packaging and local deliveries will be made using an electric vehicle. But where did the idea come from?
Tiff quit her job in a Brussels photography gallery to move to Morzine, alongside her partner Rod, who’d been working for a law firm. They enjoyed a perfect first winter season in our valley; long days on the mountain combined with working for AliKats Mountain 48

Holidays as a chalet couple. Those were the days! Until they weren’t, and COVID closed our resorts on 15th March 2020. Faced with the prospect of a rapid retreat to Brussels as European borders closed or locking down here in Morzine, Rod and Tiff decided to stay. They were already
brewing their own speciality coffee mini project at the time and by coincidence, Al Judge of AliKats was doing the same. As luck would have it, the bubble they formed to see out those first eight weeks of confinement created the perfect conditions to combine their ideas and grow their new business.
Amongst the COVID-chaos of spring and summer 2020, the trio made their first tentative steps into the world of coffee. They borrowed a roaster. They made contact with growers and suppliers. They taught themselves how to make consistent batches of roasted beans, relentlessly testing different formulas and permutations.
of beans. Perhaps most excitingly, those signing up early will enjoy Pioneer Prices with a 15% discount for the lifetime of their subscription. You’ll also discover Cafés Vorlaz in a growing number of cafes, hotels and restaurants locally, giving you the perfect opportunity to try before you subscribe!
Temperatures were adjusted, timings adapted, the perfect conditions created. Cafés Vorlaz launches here in the Vallee d’Aulps this spring. There’ll be three launch roasts to begin with - Antidote, Bluebird and Föhn, priced €9.50 per 250g
Three launch roasts are now available to order at cafesvorlaz.com and you can follow the progress of the Vallee d’Aulps' first coffee on Instagram - @cafesvorlaz

THE ZERO PLASTIC
challenge Our local Carrefour stores in Morzine and St Jean d’Aulps have joined the global Carrefour mission to achieve 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging by 2025. This hugely inspiring and ambitious campaign has already removed more than 1,100 tones of plastic from Carrefour’s own branded products since 2019.

First for the chop will be plastic packaging on fresh fruit and vegetables, which we’re inclined to call the worstoffending and least necessary plastic packaging around. Already the brand has reduced plastic packaging on fruit and veg by 200 tonnes a year, completely eliminating it from its Bio brand. Next up, plastic bottles, for which Carrefour has a target of offering its juice, water and soda range in 50% recycled plastics by 2022. 80% of the Carrefour Bio range is already packaged in recyclable materials and it’s the first supermarket brand to offer a 100% recycled plastic bottle for its juice range. Last but not least, toiletries. Carrefour was the first brand to offer its own zero plastic solid shampoo, the bamboo toothbrush range has been a huge success and there’s an expanded range of cosmetics under the new Carrefour Soft Green brand. It’s really exciting to see such a huge commitment to innovation from Carrefour, who are clearly committed to reducing the environmental impact of their products. We’ll follow this up with more facts and stats in our winter magazine.

THE MORZINE-MONTRIOND TRIATHLON
As per most sporting events over the last 12 months, the Morzine-Montriond Triathlon enjoyed an enforced hiatus during 2020. The previous two summers saw increasing participation which supported the triathlon’s aim to deliver a safe, fair and friendly event that’s open to people of all ages and abilities. The event will look slightly different in 2021. For the first time all entrants will cross the finish line in Morzine, rather than on the shores of Lac de Montriond. There’ll also be an Olympic distance Triathlon, whilst the organisers have signed up to the FFTri Label Mixité accreditation, which seeks to ensure equality between all participants, male or female, beginner or experienced. WHY DID YOU SIGN UP? “My friend and boss Mark told me I had to do a triathlon with him. I agreed, thinking it would be a walk in the park, even though I hated running, I couldn’t swim, and I’d never ridden a road bike before. I was then determined to make it over the finish line, which I did in dead last place.”

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THIS TRIATHLON? “I enjoy the effort, but above all the atmosphere at the races, which is always superb. bike vision INTRODUCING
THE CREATORS OF ST JEAN D'AULPS' NEW PUMP TRACK
If you’re reading this and wondering why a new pump track is a big deal around these parts - we’re surrounded by some of the best bike trails in the world after all - I'll elaborate. Pump tacks keep children of all ages entertained for hours, without fail. They offer guaranteed entertainment, whatever the weather, fostering a community of kids playing outside, away from screens. They help hone those vital bike skills and they’re great fun for adults too. Sébastien Giraldi and his team at Bike Vision Design were charged with construction of the new track. Those of us with small people to entertain have grown used to schralping all the way to Morillon pump track of a weekend. “If only we had a track this good closer to home,” we’d mutter on the way back. If you’re wondering what a pump track is, imagine a circular loop of rollers and berms for bikes, designed to maximise momentum so you can ride it with minimal pedalling. Made of earth and typically coated in tarmac, the modern day pump track often comes with varying routes and degrees of difficulty and is most definitely not just for small people. The 2020 Municipal Elections brought a new mayor for St Jean d’Aulps, which sits just 8km from the centre of Morzine (and is therefore entirely ridable). Despite the first 12-months of his mayorship being dominated by COVID-19-chaos, Mayor Chalençon quickly established and approved plans to build a brand new pump track within his commune, due for completion at the end of May 2021. 60
bike vision - pump track
//
© Maxime Rambaud - bike vision team
Why have pump tracks become so popular in recent years? SEB: Pump tracks are beautiful recreation areas that can be easily created today in most towns and cities. They’re versatile, welcoming mountain bikers, BMX-ers, skateboarders, long boarders, scooters, roller-skaters and little ones on balance bikes. The fun is accessible to all! Here at Bike Vision Design we specialise in creating infrastructure in areas dedicated to mountain biking. Our projects include bike parks, trail construction, slopestyle courses and free ride zones in addition to pump tracks. Where did the idea for a pump track in St Jean d’Aulps come from? SEB: Quite simply, it was the will of the Mayor and his team. They were all very motivated to build the new track and their objective was clear; the track should be ambitious and meet the ambitions of the young people in the valley. We presented them with our vision, which had to be well integrated on the site, visually acceptable and technically versatile too. What’s the schedule for the project? When will it be ready? SEB: Here at Bike Vision Design we’re the project managers and we called on local company Coppel Terrassement in Les Gets to conduct the required earthworks. We’ve created three different trails on the one site, with an access ramp, a riprap wall and drainage of course. Once the earthworks were complete, we moved in to model and perfect the rollers, the berms and the jumps. The top layer will be asphalt and once it’s installed we’ll take care of the landscaping, including fencing, painting and the creation on an information board.

Who is the St Jean d’Aulps track for? SEB: Everyone! There are three levels of track - green for the youngest riders, blue for intermediates and a red track with lots of jumps for more seasoned riders. There’ll also be a small bowl, similar to what you might find in a skate park. Did you also build the Les Gets Airline? SEB: We did! That was a long time ago now. SaGets (the lift operating company in Les Gets) dedicated a new piece of land for the project - it was steep, narrow and short, so we had to be creative. We had to play with the slope by making catwalks and we had really bad weather with rain, snow and cold temperatures, but only good memories remain!
How will you feel when you see people making their first turns on the new pump track? SEB: The birth of a pump track - or any trail really - is very emotional! Whether the feedback is negative or positive, trail users often forget the work that goes into these projects. A lot of responsibility rests on the shoulders of the shapers and for my part, I try to have a global vision and to think of every use for the track, including those who finance it, of course! We look forward to opening day like a birthday and as the first wheels turn we’re always apprehensive but happy! Being a bike park shaper isn’t something we do to make our fortune. This is a passion profession! And then I say to myself… where is the next one? And where is the next one?
Follow the work of Bike Vision on Instagram @bikevisiondesign
SEB: We’ll begin work on LudoPark, a mini bike park for children in the forest in Le Grand Bornand before heading to Abondance to make another pump track. And before the end of June we’ll complete the refurbishment of the Bike Vision Bike Park in Bernex with two new trails.

During France’s first lockdown of March 2020, I got to know Angel Adoree & Dick Strawbridge very well. That is to say, I never met them, but each evening we’d religiously watch re-runs of Escape to the Château - all seven series and all the spinoffs too. Each time Angel made © John Hersey
a new purchase (the canal boat for the moat was a highlight), each time Dick got to work in the kitchen (Christmas at the Château, another favourite), we felt like part of the family. With their Château highs and lows, Angel and Dick kept us sane and

inspired during the tough times. If you’re unfamiliar with Escape to the Château, here’s a quick synopsis. Formerly a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army and more recently a TV presenter on Scrapheap Challenge, Dick Strawbridge and his wife Angel buy a dilapidated 19th-century château in Martigné-sur-Mayenne, north western France. They set about restoring the 45-room property and establishing a wedding and events business with their two small children in toe. Angel is a true creative and brings her unique style to each room of the château, often setting Dick seemingly impossible engineering challenges, to which he never grumbles.

Were you actively looking for a French château project? Or did you see the château and think “I must live there!”? What came first? The dream or the property? When we first started dating we had a romantic holiday near Carcassonne and fell in love with France. As well as drinking some wine and eating a lot of cheese, we also looked through a lot of estate agent windows and couldn’t believe what your money could buy you over here. We started thinking about the life we wanted together and how we could make this a possibility. Originally we thought a simple farmhouse would suffice, but when we discovered we could buy a whole château to run our events business from and our wish list got bigger! Château de la Motte Husson was literally everything we had dreamed of and talked about. It had fairytale towers, a moat, the Walled Garden for Dick and the Orangery for me, and stacks of potential – we fell in love instantly and the rest is history! Dorothy and Arthur were incredibly young when you moved to France. How easy was it to settle into French life? What were the challenges? And the best bits? Moving with young children is a challenge for anyone! The fact it was the middle of winter and we had no heating, electricity, water or sewerage certainly added an interesting dimension to say the least. We can’t lie, it wasn’t easy, but we survived! Our neighbours and the local community were incredibly welcoming which help us to settle in and once the children started school we felt like we’d lived here for years! The best bits are seeing Arthur and Dorothy enjoying school and playing with their friends – we love their French accents too!

I can’t remember a time before Escape to the Château, but how did the series come to be on TV? Dick is TV presenter and was for 15 years before we found the Château. The story is ironic, because our initial reason for moving was to create a simpler life. We looked for years and often talked about it making an interesting and feel good TV show. When our agent heard Channel 4 were looking for a French based show, she knew the stars had aligned. After four years of searching we found the Château of our dreams. The show was commissioned after this. I love it when you start a new room or project. Do you think the château will ever be finished? Are you addicted to renovation? We’re not sure the Château will ever be finished! We have done a lot but then you notice something else and think ‘must add that to the list!’. The potential of what we can do next is what we love about it. At some point we will put our feet up a bit and let Arthur and Dorothy take over. Arthur is a true gourmand and has dreams of running a restaurant from here, so watch this space! Dick is obviously not your average DIY-er. What advice would you give those thinking of starting their own renovation project? Give it a go! That’s always our advice. Planning is so important though – don’t rush into things without thinking about what you need and how you’re going to do it. Really anything is possible if you put your mind to it – you’ll be surprised what you can achieve just by being a bit France Property Angels brave and getting stuck in. >>half page summer 21.pdf 1

Angel, when it comes to interiors, how do you balance the history and heritage of the château with your own personal tastes and style? I have always tried to stay true to the history and integrity of the Château, which is why I reuse many of its treasures – like the leftover wallpaper cuttings from the attic that were used for the Wallpaper Museum. As well as bringing the Château back to life with items we’ve found here, the Château continues to inspire my designs. And you have to be true to yourself. What projects do you have planned at Château de la otte Husson this year? We are currently filming the new series of Escape to the Château: Make Do and Mend, where we help with other people with their DIY dilemmas. Then, all being well, we hope to host a few weddings later this summer. And of course in and amongst all this there’s plenty of other projects and things to keep us busy! Escape to the Château was one of our lockdown highlights. How has the Château as a business been affected by the chaos of the last 12 months? And what have you done to diversify? Like all wedding businesses, we had to postpone our bookings from last year. This gave us some lovely family time and we also wrote a book! A Year at The Château is our version of the first year we moved here – warts and all! It’s written in both our voices so you get both sides of the story. We had such a wonderful time writing it and loved reminiscing, laughing, crying and sometimes wincing at the things we remember.

Tell me about the Dare To Do It Tour. Who is it for? We’ve received thousands of emails over the years asking us about the Château, our move to France and renovation projects, so we thought why not go out and share our story! At the beginning of 2020 we visited theatres across the UK with our ‘Dare To Do It’ Tour – it was so much fun. The tour was a big success and we realised that actually there’s so much more to share, so in early 2022 we’ll be heading back out on the road with a new interactive tour ‘Dare to do it – so much more to say’. And boy we have SO much more to say!

I’m obviously in the Alps, where the property equivalent might be a traditional Savoyarde farmhouse. Have you ever been tempted by a property in the mountains? We love the mountains! We also looked at property everywhere in the initial stages, and we looked at a stunning Château in the Basque region (not quite the Alps!). I think when looking for your forever home you have to think how you want to live…. Perhaps we’ll try a holiday or two or three first!

insurance FOR ALL
“Have you asked Marc or Nicolas at AXA?” Is a question I frequently find myself asking. Because, in my experience, when it comes to arranging your insurances, banking, social care and investments as part of your new life in the mountains, Marc or Nicolas are sure to have the answers. From their office in Morzine they coordinate many of the essential services you need if you’re new to France and they’re always very happy to help. Why is it important to have a local insurance agency? “When it comes to insurance or banking, recent history has shown us that the financial foundations and stability of the companies we choose to work with are essential. AXA is one of the largest insurance companies in the world with top rated financial ratios. But its commercial activity is delegated to a network of independent exclusive agents that have a profound knowledge of the specific requirements of local residents and the economy of their area. So, it combines the advantage of being a world class company with the care of a local team. In our agency in Morzine, we understand how insurances, savings and healthcare differ in France to what our customers are used to back hin England for example. We can

seen an acceleration of people coming to spend their retirement time and enjoy all the benefits that France offers to seniors.”
You’ve both lived and worked in our valley for many years, why do you think so many people come here?
Marc, you coordinate the wealth management and protection side of the agency, what services does this include
“The combination of an environment close to nature, the possibility to practice many sports and a very dynamic economy driven by tourism is certainly a strong drive for a lot of people to decide to establish themselves in our valley. Also, with the continuous development of the net economy and the good communication tools we have in the valley, we have seen a new generation of professionals establish with their families to take advantage of the good quality of life we enjoy here. Now we have a great mix of companies offering a variety of different services for our growing community. And of course with Brexit, we have
“For that part of our activity, we focus on the insurance of people. That starts from financial protection against immediate risks such as critical illness, disability and death. We also provide topup health cover and international travel as well as multisport insurance. We also provide mortgage insurances for both local and foreign investors as well as first time buyers. For the wealth management part, we offer banking solutions, saving plans including Assurance Vie and retirement plans. We also have a private banking department to support those customers that require solutions for complex savings needs in a tax efficient manner.”

Nicolas, you look after insurance of goods - what products are available for local residents and second home-owners? “I have extensive experience in what people think of as traditional insurance solutions: property, cars, houses, boats etc. And whether it is a primary residence or second home, I take pride in visiting the property before the contract completion. This ensures that both the customer and I are confident that if anything unexpected happened they are covered for the predicable and the unanticipated. I also help many small businesses in the valley behind the scenes making sure they are insured for their activities to best provide services for their clients. We are flexible and can help people with changes to their business activity. It’s important to us that everybody is comfortable and feels secure with the protection they have with AXA.”

Brexit has obviously changed things in 2021. What do we need to know from an insurance perspective? “Nothing has really changed for us here. We are happy to continue helping our British clients, with our bilingual team and local knowledge. We can help them navigate some unforeseen difficulties that arise as a result of Brexit, but it is still the same number to call for assistance or advice for your contracts.” What services do you provide for local business owners, or those thinking of establishing a business here? “There are many aspects on which we can help non-salaried workers or those interested in setting up a business in the valley. We help them define the level of financial protection and health care they need, taking into account the benefits that are offered by the French Social Security system. We also guide them through the benefits of certain solutions that can generate tax breaks. We guide them towards the appropriate solutions they need to protect their business, their staff, their data and all the assets invested in their activity. This also includes legal and liability protection. As their situation evolves, we invite business owners to get in touch with us regularly to see how we can help them with changes.”

What’s the best thing about living in the mountains? “We both grew up here in Morzine. We know how lucky we are to live in such a privileged part of the world. For my part, (Marc) I really enjoy the possibility to go for a ski touring round after work in the winter. In the summer I don’t miss a chance to jump on my bike for a climbing session on one of the many nearby cols or play on the beautiful, although challenging, golf courses we have in the region.” Nicolas is the artist of the team. When he is not working hard at the agency, you will see him manage the local Brass band where he also teaches air instruments to young children. He is also fond of antique cars and in the summer, you cannot miss his burgundy “Samba Talbot Convertible” on the streets of Morzine.” You have a physical agency in Morzine, but how is best for people to contact you? “We are very happy to receive customers in our agency because in order to provide the best solution at the right budget, it is important to us to meet and discuss. However, it is not very big and considering the current health situation we prefer that people call in advance to make an appointment. Alternatively they can send us an e-mail. We are a fully bilingual agency and we are happy to help people in the language of their choice. Finally, and to support our growth, we will open a new agency in Taninges, from where we will be very pleased to serve those customers living in the Giffres Valley.” Discover More: Call: +33 (0) 4 50 79 15 34 Email: agence.invernizzietlaurent@axa.fr

La Maison de Montriond is one of those buildings that you’ll stand outside of, likely for quite some time, wondering what on earth it’s like inside. Well we can tell you, as we’ve been inside; several times in fact. The 18th century facade hides a staggeringly beautiful contemporary home with spectacular features including a vast, open plan living space, a spa and wellness suite, a floating wine cellar and a private boudoir. La Maison de Montriond is a sight to behold and on the pages that follow, I’ll introduce you to the team that brought the project to life. resort information

“We’d been searching for the right property for many years, and finally we'd found it! La Maison de Montriond dates back to 1749, and occupies a central position in the heart of the village. Even in its dilapidated condition we knew we wanted to breathe life back into this grand building, and create a mountain home for family and friends to enjoy. With the team we assembled to help us, it really felt like we were partners, all working towards the same vision. The finished home is testament to the high quality, dedication and creativity of the artisans in the valley. I really wish we could find a reason to work with them again! !” The Owners: Lynn & Duncan Graham
“This is first and foremost a traditional and iconic village manor-house (maison de maître); it’s certainly not a chalet! We therefore needed to work delicately and sympathetically on its restoration. Over the centuries the building had been extended in several different styles; our radical approach was to remove all but one of these additions, allowing the home to regain it’s authentic proportions. New apertures were created, to allow natural light to enter and to offer views of the famous Pointe de Nantaux; but all the while protecting the integrity of the building. We then regrouped the recovered floor-spaces, which allowed us to design a discrete new building for the rear of the plot, on the site of an old mazot (granary). Here the design is contemporary so as not to compete with the main building, and a tunnel connects the two properties. I’m often asked about the central staircase of this property. It’s positioned within a glass-filled void that runs up through the centre of the property - as you enter you feel sucked up into the living space. I think this is my favourite element of La Maison de Montriond.” The Architect: Hervé Marullaz of Architectures

“I have loved this beautiful building since first arriving here 20 years ago, and always dreamed of helping to bring it back to life! We had exceptional clients, and their philosophy matched our own - to restore the exterior of the property to its former glory, whilst creating a suitably gorgeous, spacious and airy family home within. I worked with the familiar shep&kyles design palette old-wood, glass and metal accents; but always mindful that it's not a typical savoyard ski chalet but rather an alpine townhouse, which the interior feel had to capture and enhance. Hervé and I had a fabulous time working with the build team, especially our talented carpenter Claude Tavernier and glass specialist Thierry Jolivet, on features such as the glass walkways and the glass floor separating the open wine cave from the swimming pool below. Claude’s renovation of the roof and the Juliette balcony at the front of the property are particularly outstanding. The interior style needed to reflect the heritage of both the building and our alpine region - to be opulent yet cosy, elegant yet welcoming. I also had the opportunity to design my first “boudoir” (and discovered that the origin of the word comes from the French verb “bouder” meaning to be sulky!). This is my favourite spot, a beautiful opulent retreat with hand-printed wallpaper, velvet chairs and gold birdcage table lamps! I adored this project, and am incredibly proud of our contribution to the restoration of this iconic alpine property.” The Interior Architect: Kyles Garrett of Shep&Kyles Design
A team of highly skilled local artisans helped Lynn and Duncan realise their dream at La Maison de Montriond. They are particularly grateful for the hard work of Claude Tavernier of Comfort Bois, Sylvain Anthonioz of Energelec, Jean-François and Pierre Lanvers, Thierry Jolivet of Vitrerie Jolivet, Didier Plagnet of Plagnet Maçonnerie, Christophe Marcellin, Jean-Luc Favre at Compagnons du Feu Altitude, Manu Strijker of Chalet Parquets & Stores, Michel Ferrandis of Ferrandis Peinture and finally Nicolas Bondaz from Bondaz Frères Paysagistes.

the market THE STATE OF
By gareth jefferies
Marketing Director at alpine-property.com
I’m writing this report during the second week of May 2021 and this is important to know because, thanks to the rapidly changing property market right now, these market reports need updating weekly! We are currently in the middle of an extremely active market and whether or not this is a bubble that is about to burst is not something anyone will know. Changes on the horizon could make the market even hotter. But I’ll come back to those! The winter that never was - or was it the winter of our future? All our bars and restaurants remained closed for visitors, all the ski lifts remained closed for recreational skiers. However, the peak holiday weeks seemed just as busy as ever. The carparks and the roads seemed full and the mountains were covered in people cross country skiing, hiking, hiking up to ski down, hiking with snowshoes, sledging and riding bikes on the snow. It really did show us that people still appreciate the mountains for what they are, and can deal with the lack of lift assisted skiing. As I utter these words I will be drowned out by howls of protest from the ski industry, and that’s because that is where all the money is. I’m not disputing that.

“Changes on the horizon could make the market even hotter.”
The other big event that has happened since I wrote my winter market report for Morzine Source Magazine is Brexit. If there has been an effect on the property market from Brexit, we’ve not felt it yet. Any change has been swamped by COVID. Some of our Britishbased customers are buying via virtual visits, but they are in the minority as the vast majority of our sales are in the French market. New enquiries from Brits are about the same as usual yet French enquiries are swamping them 2 to 1 at the moment. Brexit has made a couple of changes generally, however. It is now much harder to come to France to work, yet that hasn’t really affected the property market. You can
your source of information for Morzine, Les Gets & Avoriaz
still retire to France if you have a good pension, you’ll have to apply for a Visa though and take out health insurance. The main change is for someone based in the UK who is selling their property in France. If your property has gained in value and capital gains tax is due, then this has gone up almost 10% (from 26.5% to 36.2%). A UK-based seller will also have to pay for a fiscal guarantee that can be up to 1% on the total sale price. And just let me clarify, these extra selling costs are not just aimed at the British - it’s the same for all residents of a non-EU country.

Overall the lower demand from British based customers has been more than replaced by French buyers. Our new enquiries are up 30%, month on month, every month since last May and that’s a figure being matched by property sales. It is the same phenomena all over the world. People are looking to move out of the cities and we live in a lovely part of the world that benefits from good transport links. The upshot of all this is a reduced supply of properties. When demand outstrips supply it can only mean that prices will increase.

We monitor a couple of sales figures. The primary one is average property prices. Over the last 10 years we have seen between a 20 and 30% increase in property prices, depending on the type of property and the area. However, over the last three years they have been fairly flat across the board. In the last couple of months we have been feeling a definite upwards pressure on prices. It depends on the property, but I think we can easily speak of a 5%, or even 10% increase in property prices, and sometimes more. In France if an offer is made at the asking price, then the owner is contracted to accept it. And once the first contract (compromise de vente) is signed, then this locks out other offers. This should mean that gazumping does not happen. It also means that “offers over” or sealed bids don’t exist. This alone can put a brake on rapid price inflation. So will this surge in interest continue? Who knows. Very little of what I predicted a year ago has come to pass. There are other factors at work too. Higher interest rates? Negative interest? Inflation? One thing we do know however, is there remains a lot of pent up demand in the UK and these people will visit at the first opportunity. We hope that this will be soon. Governments are talking about June but obviously it will depend on the ongoing health situation. When this happens it will just add to the demand and consequently we don’t expect a slow down in the market any time soon. lunar LIFE
By Carrie Greer of Little Wild
Have you had that moment when you’ve stood outside and just stared up at the beauty of the moon? Here in the mountains, the passage of the moon across the night sky seems extra special. We’re all super aware of it; how it looks hanging over the cliffs of Avoriaz on a snowy night with the ethereal glow of the resort, or early on a summer morning as it fades behind the majesty of the Roc d’Enfer.
In ancient times, the moon’s journey acted as a 28 day calendar. Her phases were used as a marker for the passage of time and life was built around nature, the ebb and flow, the wax and wane, always in touch with the seasons and the natural world around you. As the world has evolved, as the urban sprawl has continued to spread, as we have become more used to and reliant on technology. We are gradually losing our connection with nature. Living in the mountains, or choosing to come here for a holiday, it often feels like nature is slapping us in the face. "Look at me, look at how majestic I am!” cry the mountains and oh my word do we look. How can we not start to feel that connection? It’s impossible to avoid. That warmth from the earth under our feet? That rush of calm as we watch the river flow on its journey down the valley. The vast expanse of indigo night sky

lunar life
dotted with tiny stars and the gentle glow of the moon. Breathing more deeply, tension leaving our bodies, our minds feeling calm and clear.
The moon inspires an energy all of her own. The gravitational pull
that affects the tides also affects us. Bodies that are sixty percent water, and subject to our own ebb and flow. Coming back to nature
and living in harmony with the cycles of the natural world has an
immediate calming effect on our technologically exhausted lives. Living a life in line with the moon and her phases starts to bring us back to who we really are. We gain clarity and perspective, become stronger in our ideas and more aflame with our passions. We learn when to rest and when to work, how to work to our full potential without exhausting ourselves. We start to understand that the ups and downs we experience are common to all, we feel less lonely in our dark times, and know that as the moon changes, so will this also pass. In simple terms, the moon moves around the earth as the earth moves around the sun. The position of the moon in relation to the earth and the sun and the amount of light reflected onto the moon’s surface from the sun is what gives us the different view of the moon over her cycle.

your source of information for Morzine, Les Gets & Avoriaz
Here are the different phases of the moon to help you follow the cycle. New Moon: The start of the lunar cycle. The moon is between the earth and the sun and the sun shines light on the side of the moon that we can’t see - we essentially see the dark side of the moon. Energetically speaking, new moons are a time for rest, for preparation and for goal setting for the month to come. A time to get organised, to set boundaries and to look after yourself in order to achieve and grow. During the dark moon (the days just before the new moon) you may feel an overwhelming exhaustion. You’ll want to pull back into yourself, crave solitude and feel very emotional. These feelings are to guide you into the growth association of the new moon. To look inward and see what areas of life need a little extra attention or guidance, and then create those plans and intentions with the new moon. Waxing Phase: This is the two week phase between the New and Full Moon. Gradually the moon gets bigger in the sky. Our energy levels grow along with the illumination of the moon and this is our time for action! The growing light of the moon can help us see more clearly and work on all the plans and ideas we put into place during our new moon intention setting. As the moon approaches her fullness this is a time of intense energy. Often people have trouble sleeping in the days leading up to the full moon - this is your extra chance to get things done - to finish what you’ve started - your time for rest will come.
Full Moon: We see her shining in all her glory, bright and beautiful. The lunar light shines down to celebrate completion and endings, or gives you the extra energy to push forward with your goals and ideas. Sometimes blockages or obstacles are illuminated and you’ll be given the energy to overcome them. The full moon is the perfect time to release and let go of anything that no longer serves you. A moon ritual of release and let go is particularly powerful during these full moon days. Waning Phase: This is the two weeks between the full and new moon, as the moons light diminishes in the sky. As the Waxing or growth phase allows us to push forward, this phase is all about release. Looking deeply into ourselves, finding our truth, or more simply the perfect time to de-clutter and let go of everything, physically and emotionally that we don’t need. More info : If you want to try living a little lunar then here are the dates for this summers new and full moons. In general, set intentions with the new moon, and release and let go with the full moon- although it’s always best to do what feels right for you, wherever La Lune is sitting in her cycle. Oh **** HAS MY CONNECTION GONE AGAIN?! THE UNEXPECTED JOYS OF TEACHING ONLINE YOGA By Emily Williams of Emily Ruth Yoga
At the start of 2020 the word Zoom didn’t feature in most of our vocabularies, other than to describe going fast, or as a kid pretending to be a car. Jump forward a year and a bit and if you haven’t gone through the trials and tribulations of using this online video platform to connect with others, were you even in lockdown?! Yes, the World took a pause during which time family quizzes became mandatory; you quickly learnt to tidy one corner of your house in 90 seconds flat, and exercised new levels of patience when explaining to Great Uncle Mike that, once again, he was on mute. However, despite all its frustrations and technical glitches, Zoom has inevitably brought many positives. How many of us attended workshops and seminars, or learnt new skills from teachers and esteemed experts who would otherwise be inaccessible? For those of us who live abroad, our annual trip to visit family transformed into a weekly catch up, and those overdue reunions with uni friends or mates from your first season suddenly became possible. Living so far from my family means it’s been hard for us to share the day-today aspects of our lives but now, I have several family members who regularly join me for Yoga! It’s safe to say that Zoom has changed the way we connect, and it’s probably here to stay. When we went into lockdown 1.0, what seems like oh so many moons ago now, I made the decision within the first 24 hours to take my classes online. Our living space was transformed into my online studio, furniture was moved, and just like that my entire business shifted into the ether of the internet. But what started as a means to an end, enabling me to continue working, transformed into so much more. Through every class I was transported into the living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, hallways and gardens of all of my students. Something that previously was a brief hello at the start of class, a relationship tied to the confines of the yoga studio and societal norms, shifted in this space where we were suddenly a part of each other's home 86

lives too. A ritual formed of greeting each individual who showed up, a way of checking in before the beginning class, of recognising and acknowledging the time they had carved out for themselves. Through these little Zoom windows I’ve become familiar with their homes and in turn have invited them openly into mine. Whilst the World was busy closing down, I was suddenly able to share my practice with people not only in Morzine, but also back in the UK, all over Europe and the rest of the World too! Some have a connection to Morzine, a few have practiced with me out here on holiday, and others I’m yet to meet in real life but am excited for that day to come! And so formed our online community, forged through practicality and necessity to keep moving mindfully, even in the chaos that the pandemic created. To find practice, routine and ritual. Staying connected, albeit in a new, somewhat different and unusual way. Some of the shifts that have happened are obvious, surface level let’s say, but there are others that may go a little more unnoticed. The relationships with Yogis who come to classes multiple times a week have flourished in a new way. Normally the feedback from yoga sessions comes at the end when we’re milling around, or people are waiting to pay. There’s time for a passing comment or the occasional longer chat, but it’s a public space and everyone often has somewhere to dash off to. Now, with people practicing in their own space and having time for the impact of a class to settle, the feedback comes at a different pace; messages on Instagram the day after a class, in depth emails describing how their practice has grown over the month, phone calls from friends and even //

Yoga Yoda memes being created! Whilst social media can be a dark place for many reasons, it can also be a place of positivity, and when used for good, can open up doorways where sharing and connection is a little easier. I wonder whether these connections would have formed in the same way if, at the end of each yoga class, we rolled up our mats, left the studio and went our separate ways. Back to our homes, private to us, where the person you’re practicing next to doesn’t know that you have a dog who loves crow pose, what kind of mug you drink your morning coffee from or that you have three kids who love to wave at everyone at the end of class. Bringing Yoga into our homes has removed an invisible layer. Like when you were younger and you saw a school teacher out of school wearing ‘normal clothes’, we’ve broken down a barrier and opened up a new space. One where there’s space for human error - yes those moments when you thought you were on mute as you yelled at your partner to close the door, or turn off the radio - for technical difficulties, for moving house (hello!), and for being able to share all of these moments with an incredible online community that’s formed and is supporting me just as much as I’m supporting them. Live classes provide an online world without a filter. And yes, whilst sometimes in the moments where the neighbours suddenly decide to make dinner during savasana, I wish there was a filter, mostly I’m glad there isn’t! It’s real, it’s raw, it's unscripted. So as the World begins to return to “normal” - whatever that means - I hope that this world of broken barriers, and open conversation continues to grow. As we begin to welcome back in-person classes, Yoga at the beautiful Lac Montriond and in the studio, I’m confident there’s enough room for the two to coincide. For me at least, as I’m sure will be the case for many others, our online space, and community cultivated, will be sticking around for a while longer.

mushrooms FORAGING FOR
By Natalie Elvy of frogs rafting
Before arriving in France the extent of my mushroom know-how was pre-packed and purchased button mushrooms fried on toast. Shortly after I’d moved here, my husband announced we were going mushroom hunting; I was underwhelmed. I knew one false-identification when foraging for and eating wild mushrooms could be fatal, and given my poor attention to detail I felt sure buying was more responsible. My lack of enthusiasm surprised him - it seems in France mushrooming is a pretty standard way to pass a damp autumn day; in some areas, it can even become quite vicious. My husband’s tales transformed the mushroom-ers of my imagination (kindly, retired couples filling time) to something more akin to an eccentric elite soldier. Committed and territorial, real mushroom hunters are secretive - they’ll never reveal their spots. Often decked out in camo gear to blend in and avoid tracking, the give-away (so you know you haven’t stumbled on a special-op) will be their wicker-baskets (mushrooms don’t like plastic bags). In Aveyron (a top spot) tyre slashing incidents are common during mushroom season, and researching this article I learned that when it comes to big-money mushrooms (truffles), there are tales of prize truffle dogs being poisoned or stolen, and an instance of a truffle poacher being shot dead by a landowner in 2010. It had never occurred to me to be intrigued (or even interested) in mushrooms, but a quick web search revealed their hidden depths. Their classification alone used to concern vegetarians and vegans, because they are closer to the animal

//
than the plant kingdom. Happily for mushroommunching vegans everywhere, their similarity to animals is only in the way they make energy. Unlike plants who live above ground and use the sun’s energy to keep them going, mushrooms need an external food source to sustain them (like animals). As they lack any central nervous system and digestion happens outside their ‘bodies’, mushrooms (along with yeast, slime-moulds, lichens and others) have had their very own ‘fungi’ classification since the late 1960s. The general consensus is, given edible mushrooms are packed full of vitamins B & D (which can be difficult to find outside of animal products), they are a beneficial addition to any diet, and given their ‘umami’ taste (essence of deliciousness in Japanese), they can deepen the flavour of many dishes.
pigs pinch them. The cost of white truffles, the rarest and most valuable in the world, starts at 2000 €/kg from truffle dealers, or 6000 €/kg from restaurants. The biggest single white truffle found in 50 years sold at auction in 2007 for £160,000 - it was 1,5kgs. These prices reflect not only the challenges of storage and global shipping (for maximum olfactory impact, a fresh white truffle must be shaved onto your plate less than 72 hours after it is unearthed), but also finding the truffle in the first place. Remarkably, and explaining the competitive nature of some mushroom hunters, humans cannot reliably cultivate many of our most desirable fungi, including truffles (found in warmer parts of France and Italy), cèpes, morilles and girolles (all of which can be found around here).
Many animals get excited about mushrooms. Pigs are particularly keen on truffles - the scent drives them into a frenzy, and they’ll plough a field with their snouts to find them, but they’ll hoover up any other fungi they happen upon. Our own enthusiasm is evidenced by the astronomical sums we’ll pay for truffle shavings and the lengths we take to train dogs to sniff them out before the
So what is a mushroom? It is to its underground network, as a grape to its vinyard - a tiny hydrated, inflated tip of a far bigger whole. Just as grapes spread the seeds of the vine, a mushroom is the reproductive solution for some fungi species. It is a reproductive organ and its job is to spread spores. The rest of the fungi is an enormous underground network of long strands of ‘mycelium’ that
your source of information for Morzine, Les Gets & Avoriaz
transport nutrients (absorbed from decaying and digested matter) and share them with plants through their root systems. Once considered parasitic to their plant counterparts, fungi in fact enabled photosynthesising algae to make landfall by providing them with a root system on dry land. Plants reciprocate by supplying carbohydrates from photosynthesis to their fungal partners. This symbiotic relationship functions via the wood-wide-web: a super-highway under our feet for transporting nutrients, water and information (for example threats from disease, pests or enemy fungi, nutritional requirements or obstacles) among the connected species. It is a long-standing partnership. 90% of plants still rely on the woodwide-web, and mushroom hunters also benefit from knowledge about the relationships between certain trees and certain mushrooms. Fungi are as integral to our everyday lives as they are to plants’. Aside from edible mushrooms, you’ll find fungi in foods in the form of yeast in bread, alcohol and cheeses, in fact anything that involves fermentation. Our bodies are host to a multitude of fungi in our microbiome, helping balance our digestive and immune systems, and if things go wrong, fungi are in medicines that can make them right again. It’s easy to overlook what we cannot see, ‘but the more we learn about fungi, the less makes sense without them’ explains Merlin Sheldrake, fungi expert and author of the genuinely perspective-changing book ‘Entangled Life’.
His remarkable book proposes fungal solutions to pretty much any problems humans may encounter, and its beautiful, circle-of-life logic is persuasive. Fungi are metabolic geniuses seemingly their tastes extend to anything from rock, crude oil, polyurethane plastics to the explosive ‘TNT’. Chernobyl is home to fungi who grow towards hot radioactive particles, and appear to be able to use radiation like plants use sunlight. According to Sheldrake our future lies in recognising fungi’s possibilities, and it is already happening. Ecologists and scientists are researching harnessing fungi’s voracious
warning markers for ecosystems out of balance. The pharmaceutical industry makes use of fungi in many medicines and most recently exciting research into the potential of psilocybin, the hallucinogenic chemical in magic mushrooms, in treating patients with serious depression and anxiety. Fungi are integral across the spectrum of human experience, and we’re learning more about them everyday yet incredibly, over 90% fungi species remain undocumented, and their possibilities undiscovered. Discover More : If you’re mushroom curious, here are a few tips: • Get a good mushroom book (with pictures) so you can check what you find*. • Mushrooms literally ‘pop up’ after the rain, and there are many delicious, easy-to-find species in fields and forests around here - you don’t need to find the big names to enjoy a mushroom dinner. • Big names around here include : - Cèpe de Bordeaux / Bolet : Spruce and Beech forests; light and airy areas; July - Nov - Girolle / Chanterelle : Coniferous forests, especially Spruce ;
appetites to break down plastics and clean up oilspills. Farmers are increasingly using fungi rather than fungicides, appreciating how their presence both enriches the soil in which their crops grow, and how balanced symbiotic relationships can improve the quality of their harvests. Foresters are recognising that fungi are indicative of the health of woodland, and can be used as early
Rarely under deciduous trees; July - Nov - Morille : Near water sources, the woody banks of streams / rivers; often beneath Ash trees; April & May *More than 10,600 people were poisoned and 22 deaths from mushrooms were reported from 2010 to 2017 in France. have your cake YOU CAN
AND EAT IT!
By Sarah Peeling and Rachael Hallewell of Apeeling Cakes
of Buzz Performance
Everyone loves cake. Whether it’s with your morning coffee, your afternoon tea, or as fuel for your exercise, we should all be able to include cake and sweet treats as part of a balanced diet, without feeling guilty.
The history of cake dates back to ancient times when it was similar to bread, with added fruit and nuts and eaten with honey. According to food historians, the ancient Egyptians were the first civilisation to show advanced baking skills. The modern version of cakes with icing are believed to have been baked in Europe in the 17th century. In the past, ingredients were expensive so it was seen as an honour to be offered a cake. Today, cake is often consumed in a celebratory and social environment, when we share a slice with friends and family. It enhances our mood, makes us feel happy and boosts our spirits, bringing a community together. Over the centuries, the message of cake has remained the same: it says to someone that they are important, it represents love and companionship. But there’s another reason to eat cake - it makes the perfect fuel for exercise and planning a cake and coffee stop into a bike ride is often the most important part of the outing. Of course, everything in moderation. If we practise 92

sports, we can consume cake to our advantage, absorbing different nutrients at specific times to help us perform at our best. Inside a standard cake you’ll usually find… Flour - a starchy carbohydrate, Sugar - normally glucose, also a carbohydrate, Eggs - protein and healthy fats, Butter/Oil - fat, saturated and unsaturated. These are the Macronutrients, but they also offer plenty of Micronutrients that are also essential for the body. For example, butter contains fatsoluble vitamin A (we actually need fat to be able to absorb it); it is a form of retinoid, good for our skin, but also for our immune health and vision. Depending on the oil we use, it provides the body
with the essential Omega 3 (our body does not create it), helping to keep our brains healthy. Cake is primarily made up of carbohydrates, or ‘carbs’. Carbohydrates are the body’s primary source of fuel. Carbohydrates are absorbed and stored by the body in the form of glycogen. Our brain cannot function and our body will not perform to its best without carbohydrates. We need carbohydrates! The types of carbohydrates we consume are absorbed at different rates. For example, when we are out cycling, we need quick releasing carbohydrates such as sugars (glucose, fructose) or more refined carbohydrates like white flour.

We can save the more complex, and fibrous, varieties (wholegrain) for occasions when we have more time to digest food. There is no point overwhelming the digestive system with foods that take longer to digest when the body is trying to climb the Col de Joux Plane. Something that is easily digested to fuel our muscles quickly is preferable! Everyone is different though, so it is all about playing around to find what suits us is best – whether it is sweet or savory.
making life easier Our family run business provides peace of mind for property owners, and hassle-free holidays for your guests.

We can make our bakes more ‘nutrient dense’, where the ingredients may offer us more nutrients than maybe others. Adding vegetables, fruit or nuts, for example, can enhance the nutritional value (and sometimes calorific value!) of our cake or snack. Apeeling Cakes’ famous carrot cake squeezes in two of our five-a-day – brilliant!

Meeting our daily nutrient requirements is obviously most important to keep the body in optimum health. Cake and sweet treats can slide into our diet by also offering nutrients; and for those exercising, there is most definitely a place for this form of fuel.
With 200 properties to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect holiday accommodation with Total Mountain
All this being said, we should not forget that cake is not just food for fuel, it is also food for the soul. Whether we just fancy treating ourselves, are celebrating an occasion with friends, or have it as a reward for any reason, cake always makes us happy. We should therefore remember that any form of cake can be good for us! There are no bad foods, it is about when we eat them and under what circumstances. Everyone can still eat cake, even if we are not partaking in cycling or other exercise activities. A balanced diet is key to keeping fit and healthy.

status quo REMODELLING THE
By Aisling Donnellan
Adapt, accept, adjust… are just some of the words that spring to mind when we think of the last year. The temporary lockdown we were catapulted into last March went on a little longer than we all expected, but never has the human capacity to adapt and accept been so apparent. If we had been briefed before hand we would have snidely dismissed these current times, comparing them to a bad episode of Black Mirror. However, it was and is our reality and we had to just ride the wave. President Macron created the scenario of ski resorts without lifts during Winter 2021, something that we all would have considered impossible 12 months ago. As an employee of La Serma, the Avoriaz lift operating company, I’m taking this opportunity to explain how the resort really stood up to the challenge. Coming into the season there was still so much hope for a normal winter season, but alas it wasn’t to be. In head spinning speed, Avoriaz 1800 Office de Tourisme, the Mairie de Morzine-Avoriaz and La Serma combined efforts to collectively make the best out of a very bad situation. Itineraries were planned, crafted, secured and it was full speed ahead for the development of ski de rando / ski touring, snow shoeing, treasure hunts, ski de fond trails and lots more besides in Avoriaz. The locals have been ski touring here in Avoriaz forever, but in recent years there has been a huge surge in the popularity of this mountain discipline. It’s usually associated with off-piste excursions for those who enjoy the extreme, but each
96
remodelling the status quo
year there are more and more ski-tourers heading for the pistes and this year saw that taken to the next level. In Avoriaz 1800, ski touring routes were marked out, secured and signposted to make the activity safe and accessible to all levels throughout the winter season. We couldn’t take the lifts, but we could still ski. No fewer than five itineraries were put in place; Arare by Bleu du Lac, le Crot accessed from Prodain, Parchet and Combe a Floret from Montriond and Chaux Fleurie from Lindarets. The well-established ski de fond pistes continued to be pisted, maintained and surveyed, the snowpark at La Chapelle and areas of the Lil Stash were open and secured, all managed by the hardworking team of shapers. The centre of the resort was pisted for tobogganing and beginner ski and snowboard lessons. During the busy February school holidays, an additional touring route was established through the Stash whilst a treasure hunt for children was created in the Lil Stash. Each day families would collect their entry cards from the Office de Tourisme before hunting for clues amongst
Shreddie’s playground. If successful, they were rewarded with colouring books by the Office de Tourisme, delighting adults and children alike. Avalanche workshops were held every Sunday during the holidays by the Pisteur Secouristes whilst on the Avoriaz Up&Down app we could track and time our touring escapades. At the top of the Arare there was even a camera that you could activate through the app as you went past to get a photo of you and your group. Winter 21 was a monumental effort from every service in the resort of Avoriaz 1800. We were operating with skeleton teams and you rarely crossed paths with your colleagues. We maintained regular online meetings to ensure things went smoothly and the well-oiled machine kept chugging. I’d say we had a somewhat successful season, despite everything. There was a lot of work involved as everything needed to be pisted, secured and controlled during the opening hours. Avoriaz ran the many activities of Winter 21 entirely free of charge and many visitors to our mountains were able to enjoy

a memorable trip to Avoriaz. Of course without the usual lift pass revenues to support this work, this meant running at a loss. The operation of the Prodains Express was certainly a lifeline for those keen to explore up in Avoriaz this winter, in addition to those of us working up there! As a mode of public transport, its operation was originally restricted to pedestrians, but with some gentle persuasion we were given authority to transport people equipped in randonnée gear. Avoriaz and Saint Gervais were the only two resorts in France with such luck and it’s thanks to this point that we were able to have some semblance of a season.

Of course, all these huge efforts to create opportunities on the mountains for our visitors would have been in vain, had they not enjoyed them. Through visitor surveys and client feedback we have had an exceptionally good reaction to all activities launched this winter. The team were tasked with interviewing as many visitors as possible to discover their attitude towards ski touring. The feedback was very positive indeed. In future seasons, Avoriaz 1800 and La Serma will start exploring options to make ski touring a more permanent product in the resort. It is certainly the most ideal situation for people to try randonnée skiing if they don’t have any experience or lack the confidence to go further into the wilderness. In Avoriaz 1800 they can practice in complete serenity and freedom on safe, well-managed and dedicated pistes. Likewise we touched on clients who were seasoned randonners and greatly appreciated their feedback and ideas on how to develop facilities in the future. Could the COVID-chaos of Winter 21 be the renaissance of ski touring? I did notice the euphoria and contentment in people’s reactions when they completed their routes. A sense of pride and achievement, not to mention the adrenaline from the cardio effort. People just might be hooked. Winter 21 was an opportunity for everyone to appreciate and enjoy the mountain at a different pace; we had no choice but to slow down and drink in the environment. Alpine skiing tends to be fast and furious, with visitors racing to get as many slopes as possible during the day, yet rarely slowing down to take it all in. Powder days were magical this winter, instead of being tracked out by 10am, there were lines for days. Stress and tension were taken out of the equation and people just took their time. From a safety point of view, people had so much time to think about their runs down, they were well considered so accident risks were reduced. “Profiter de la montagne autrement”, like back in the day. No queues, no rush, no crowds, just space and time, man versus mountain. As I’m typing, I’m wondering, do I even want it to go back to how it was?

Winter calling!
by amie henderson
Never has a winter in the Portes du Soleil been more eagerly anticipated. Huge volumes of snow fell during the season that wasn’t, frustrating us all as our ski lifts stood still. High hopes are pinned on Winter 22, with many local accommodation operators reporting record demand for ski holidays throughout the season. Longer stays may become the norm, as we seek to make up for holidays lost. So my advice to you is this… book now, don’t delay. Here are five things I’m most looking forward to during Winter 22. La Bokka, Les Gets
Rudimental, Fatboy Slim and Basement Jaxx and I’m told there’ll be fewer tickets available next winter because of roll-overs from previous years. Snowboxx takes place between 19th and 26th March, the next batch of tickets will be available from 29th July and prices start at £249 for seven days accommodation and a festival wristband. Head to snowboxx.com for further details.
Having written extensively about this brand new, authentic Italian restaurant for our Winter 21 magazine, I was really disappointed that its doors never opened due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. La Bokka is a stunningly beautiful new trattoria in the centre of Les Gets with a focus on the finest Italian produce, delicious wines and interiors by a former Louis Vuitton stylist. A visit to La Bokka will be a complete evening out, with an up-beat atmosphere and live entertainment, just like all the best Italian restaurants. I can’t wait to visit! Opening is now scheduled for December 2021, head to bokka-lesgets.com for more details or follow @bokka.lesgets on Instagram.
The European Outdoor Film Tour
The Return of Snowboxx
New Accommodation Options
We’ve previously hosted a stage of the annual European Outdoor Film Tour, packing 200 people into a screening of the very best global adventure and action sports short films. We donated all the profits (approx €4200 since you asked!) from the event to our local mountain rescue service Secours en Montagne and we’ll be pitching again to bring this event back to Montriond / Morzine during the Winter 22 season. Keep an eye on our social channels for further updates. The Source Suppliers Show
It was one of the very first events to be cancelled as the spread of COVID-19 gathered pace in March 2020, yet Snowboxx returns to Avoriaz in March 2022. With a lineup still to be announced, we can expect huge acts to perform on a specially-created stage in the centre of the Portes du Soleil’s highest ski resort. Previous highlights have included

first time, we’ll host our annual trade show in advance of the winter season, rather than at the end. Scheduled for Tuesday 7th December, we’ll return to the incredible Domaine du Baron on the shores of Lac de Montriond for a one-day business-to-business meetup. As always, it’ll be free to visit the Source Suppliers Show, or €99 to join us for the day as an exhibitor. This event is essential for those promoting a product or service based enterprise to local business owners and we welcome over 500 visitors during the course of the day. Head to sourcesuppliersshow.com for ongoing updates.

Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz are famous for offering accommodation options for all group sizes and budgets - there literally is something for everyone across our three resorts. This trend continues unabated for Winter 22, when a number of chalet and apartment developments come online for many local operators. Over at MountainXtra for example, a number of new properties will be available to rent on a self catered basis, including a 2-bed at the brand new Carlina development at the bottom of the Pleney, just a few metres from the lift station. Find out more at MountainXtra. com. I’ve also heard rumours of a brand new hostel concept coming to Morzine, offering flexible stays from short breaks to season-long digs. I’ll share more on this soon!
