MARQUEE May 24, 2018

Dear HSMTA Supporter, Thank you for joining us this evening as the Orpheum Theatre Group celebrates the incredible talent gracing the Mid-South’s high school stages! It is a special night for all of us at the Orpheum. I am glad you are here to share it with us. When I remember my experience of participating in high school theatre (back in the dark ages before computerized light boards, social media marketing or any program like the HSMTAs), I recall a group of students who were passionate, but had limited talent in their craft. Tonight, you will see how all of that has changed! The level of talent found in our area high schools is unmatched. You will see that talent on full display in the musical selections and performances that are included in tonight’s program. Much of the credit for the dramatic improvement (dramatic… get it?) in high school musicals must be given to the teachers and directors. These educators devote a great deal of time, energy and skill to their productions. Their exceptional dedication is reflected in the young people they teach. The Orpheum says, “thank you” to all the amazing teachers, directors and dreamers who make these shows happen year-after-year on high school stages across the Mid-South. We wish to express our thanks to the parents and caregivers who introduced their children to the theatre, let them pursue their passion with encouragement and made sure they were given the tools they required to succeed. Without adult support, none of these performances would be possible. Most importantly, to the young people who perform, the Orpheum Theatre Group salutes you! It takes dedication, perseverance and a lot of sweat to pull off a large musical production successfully. All of you know that first hand. We say “Bravo” to your efforts. Let me also thank the Education Department of the Orpheum for their hard work. Led by Director of Education Lindsay Krosnes, the team consisting of staff members Brittany Cooper-d’Orsay and Jennifer Douberly, judges, artistic staff and student volunteers devoted countless hours to make tonight a success. They have VP of Education, Jennifer McGrath’s, and my deepest appreciation and affection. The biggest take-away for me from the HSMTAs, however, is the comfort of knowing the future of the American musical theatre tradition is bright! The young performers of the Mid-South prove that to me every time I hear them sing. Please join all of us at the Orpheum when we say “Congratulations” to the participants in the 2018 High School Musical Theatre Awards! They are shining stars and we wish them all the best as they pursue their performing dreams into the future. Thank you again for attending this evening.
