MARQUEE May 23, 2019

Dear Friend, The night that every high school-aged theatre participant in the Mid-South eagerly awaits has finally arrived. Welcome to the Orpheum’s High School Musical Theatre Awards! However, tonight is not just the culmination of this year’s outstanding work done on area high school stages. Tonight is also the 10th Anniversary of these awards at the Orpheum. That is cause for celebration! The Orpheum High School Musical Theatre Awards started long before I arrived at the Orpheum. And long before our Vice-President of Education, Jennifer McGrath, arrived. Regardless, both of us are extremely proud of the way these awards have helped raise awareness of high school musical theatre in general and, more specifically, the way these awards have improved the quality of the theatrical experiences our area high school students receive. I know Jennifer joins me when I say, “Congratulations to everyone who has been part of this journey for the first ten years. Your participation has brought us to this evening. We cannot wait to see what the next ten years hold for these awards.” None of this would be possible without the dedication and hard work of many individuals, schools and districts. So, my first thank you goes to those administrators, teachers and parents who make these shows possible. Next, I want to thank the staff of the Orpheum Theatre Group who put in countless hours preparing tonight’s performance: Director of Education Lindsay Krosnes, education team members Brittany CooperD’Orsay, Shasta Blue, Jenita Nakamura and artistic director Taylor St. John. I also want to thank the Orpheum Theatre Group’s Board of Directors, some of whom will make a brief appearance tonight. This group of dedicated volunteers have supported this program from the outset and have pledged to continue supporting it in the future. Likewise, our donors who have invested their support by sponsoring the event. You will see their names on the screen tonight, and they are listed in this program book. If you know any of them personally, or if you can bring them business if they are a company, please say thanks to them. We could not do this without their support. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I thank the performers, technicians, stage managers, and countless others who bring musical theatre to life across the Mid-South. To be a student theatre participant requires commitment, team work and bravery; all of you have these qualities and more. Enjoy your night! You deserve it!
