IN MEMORY OF HENRY BRENNER Dear Friend, Welcome to this performance of Disney’s Aladdin. Experiencing the magic of a Disney musical is always a special treat for old and young alike. I am certain you will be delighted, awed and thoroughly entertained by today’s performance. Thank you for spending a few hours at the Orpheum and experiencing the power of live theatre. In this space, however, I want to take a somber moment to recognize a community leader, Orpheum supporter and past chairman of the Orpheum Board of Directors, Henry Brenner, who passed away unexpectedly on a holiday trip to New York City in December. Henry served as Chair in 1993 and was a member of the Orpheum’s Board for many years. At the time of his passing, he was an active member of the theatre’s Past Chair’s Council and attended Board meetings regularly. He was also a member of the Club of 20, having been a season ticket holder since shortly after the theatre reopened in 1982. Finally, he was a financial supporter of the theatre; in fact, right now one of you is sitting in a seat he named in our historic theatre. Henry loved the Orpheum, but his contributions to Memphis did not stop with the arts. He was a Founding Board Member of the Fire Museum of Memphis and of TPC Southwind. He also, at various times, served on the Boards of the Liberty Bowl, Mid-South Fair, 100 Club of Memphis, Crescent Club, Ridgeway Country Club, Ave Maria Home and Christian Brothers University. Finally, he served on the Board of the Memphis Rotary Club, of which I am currently a Board member. Henry held degrees from Christian Brothers University and the University of Memphis. Professionally, he founded Brenner Steed Investments, one of the nation’s first discount brokerage firms. Through the years, Henry was recognized with many awards and accolades. He leaves behind three children and five grandchildren. For those of us at the Orpheum, however, he will be remembered for his many contributions to the organization’s success. It seems fitting that he passed away in New York City on his annual holiday trip to see Broadway shows. The Orpheum family has lost an important member in Henry Brenner. Please join all of us in saying “thank you” to him for his years of support and friendship.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

DON SCOBEY Don Scobey wears a lot of hats. He’s a donor, a season ticket holder, and a member of Friends of the Orpheum, our volunteer usher group. We recently talked with him about what he loves most about the theatre.

You’ve been a Friend of the Orpheum (FOTO) member for the past six years. What do you like most about volunteering? I just love working the shows! I’m a relationship kind of guy, so when folks come to the Orpheum or Halloran Centre for the first time and I get to help introduce them to the theatre, it gives me a chance to connect with people. And I’ve developed very close friendships with the other ushers – we’re like a family. You’re a lifelong Memphian who’s been coming to the Orpheum since the 60s. Tell us more. Back then, it was a Malco movie theatre. I remember taking a date to see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969. I was trying to make a good impression and the Orpheum was so cool, it’s always been one my favorite places. After college, I worked for a company who used tickets to entertain clients. I’ve had season tickets since my children were small, and my oldest daughter Samantha and I have a subscription together. All three of my kids enjoy it, but Samantha really loves it like I do.

And you bought those seats through our Name A Seat campaign! Yes! I wanted to support the Orpheum. But I also wanted to honor my daughter because going to the theatre is our thing – we always do it together. And do you know what I put on my little seat plates? Her’s says: “Samantha, my Broadway buddy” and mine says: “Don, Broadway daddy”. On top of everything else, you’re an Orpheum donor. What inspires you to give to a theatre? I saw a report in 2018 that only 5% of charitable donations were directed to the arts. Without public support, the arts really don’t exist. The Orpheum is a treasure, so I donate what I can. I love that the Orpheum has started programs like Camp SAY and Mending Hearts Camp in the past few years, and all the arts education programs happening at the theatre – that’s the value theatre brings to the community.

The Orpheum Theatre Group, a non-profit organization, relies on the generosity of our donors. For more information on how you can support, visit Orpheum-Memphis.com/Give

Best known as the pivotal creative mind behind The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast (which is dedicated to “Our friend, Howard Ashman, who gave a Mermaid her voice and a Beast his soul…”), Ashman’s first love was theatre. He was a founder of Off Off-Broadway’s renowned WPA Theatre, where he conceived, wrote and directed the classic musical, Little Shop of Horrors as well as God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, (both music by Alan Menken). A new cast recording of Rosewater will be available this spring from Sh-KBoom records. In 1986, Ashman wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). Lamented as a lost treasure of the 1980’s theatre scene, Smile remains popular on high school and college campuses throughout the country. Ashman’s family is thrilled that Ashman and Menken’s original songs for Aladdin, some of which were cut in the making of the film — as well as portions of Ashman’s original film treatment — have been reinstated in the theatrical production. Howard Ashman died in 1991 from complications of AIDS. For more information, please visit howardashman.com. TIM RICE (Lyrics). Tim Rice has been writing lyrics for musical theatre and related enterprises for nearly 50 years. Born 1944, remembers cold UK winter of 1947. He has won numerous awards along the way, usually for the wrong things or for simply turning up. His latest musical opened in London in 2013, based on James Jones’ great novel From Here to Eternity, with music by Stuart Brayson. Annoyingly, it closed in 2014 but there have been successful new productions in the US in 2016 & 2017 – Hakuna Matata! He is currently working on a show about Machiavelli and wrote three

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Be conscientious about the noise you may be making while enjoying concessions or searching through your bag. Please unwrap candy or other concessions before the show or during intermission, and refrain from rattling ice in cups. You may be distracting or disturbing the patrons around you and the actors on stage. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
