Dear Friends, Welcome to the Orpheum Theatre and tonight’s performance of The Bodyguard: The Musical. This production is an interesting, new business model for the theatre, as it was produced strictly for the road by the presenters around the country who are bringing it to their cities. The Orpheum Theatre Group is always looking to bring the best of Broadway to Memphis. We also strive to be at the forefront of innovation in the ever-changing world of show business. The Bodyguard is one example of how we achieve these goals for you, our patrons, and for our city. I have now had the privilege to serve as President and CEO of the Orpheum Theatre Group for just over a year. In that year, much has been accomplished, yet there is always more to do. I am excited about the upcoming improvements we are making to our facility’s washrooms and elevator as they will make the theatre-going experience better for all of us. What has made this first year so enjoyable, though, has been all the wonderful people my wife Veronica and I have met. This job provides ample opportunities to meet people, and we have tried to maximize these opportunities as much as possible. To the person, everyone we have met has been tremendously gracious and welcoming. Whether we have met them at the theatre, in corporate board rooms, or through social activities, one fact is indisputable: Memphians are nice people. Thank you for your warmth as we have made our introductions around town. While the shows we put on stage are important, show business remains, at its core, a people business. The artists who make the shows, the board members who oversee the theatre, and the patrons, like yourself, who attend the shows are the people who really make this field of entertainment happen. At the Orpheum, we remember this in every decision we make. That’s why we invest in shows like The Bodyguard. And why we will continue to look for ways to make your evenings at the theatre memorable. Because at the end of the day, it is the people that make the Orpheum’s lights burn bright! Thank you for being with us tonight. Enjoy the show.

Brett Batterson President & CEO Orpheum Theatre Group

He’s not throwing away his shot! Orpheum education alum Travis Blackwell hits the road with Hamilton and reflects on his journey from Memphis to the bright lights of Broadway. What made you want to pursue theatrical stage management as a career? I started out as an actor, but was interested in other aspects. Really anything involved in theatre at all was something I wanted to be a part of regardless of what it was. I did a show in community theatre and the assistant stage manager had to step away from the production. My role was small enough that I could sub in and do most of the ASM’s track when I was offstage. I did well and the theatre asked me if I’d be interested in stage managing a show the following season. It helped that the artistic director of the company was an equity stage manager earlier in his career. He really took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. How did the Orpheum Theatre Group prepare you for your career? The Orpheum was one of the first places where I learned about the sides of theatre beyond acting. I remember sessions about marketing,

box office operation, general management, and, yes, stage management. It was really the beginning of my interest in production, and it’s where I discovered that I could have an actual real-life career. Beyond the general education it gave me, I also got a huge leg up in the industry because of my experience working with union stage hands on a union stage. It’s next to unheard of for a college student to have that sort of experience, and the Orpheum gave me a ton of it. It absolutely has been a factor in booking jobs, and was huge in giving me a head start in my field. Describe your journey from Memphis to Wicked and now onto Hamilton. What have you learned? I’ve been really fortunate! I graduated from The University of Memphis, moved to New York City full time, joined Actors’ Equity Association, jumped into the opera scene, and got to work on a ton of really great (and a couple not-so-great)

shows. I’ve been able to travel all over for work, from Salt Lake City to a tiny village in Vermont. A lot of the industry is based in networking and Hamilton was no different, but it’s also stemmed from my education and hard work. Why do you think arts education is valuable? I don’t know where I’d be without the Orpheum and their arts education programs. It goes beyond the industry information or the skills I learned that I can apply to my career. I met so many different types of people through the arts, people who went on to study engineering, political science, medicine, and, yes, theatre. The arts provides a means of expression and exploration, a place where we can learn more about what it is to be a human, regardless of race, religion, and background. The fact that the Orpheum had dedicated so much time, money, and energy into investing in young people and

CAMP

arts education is huge. I’ve been fortunate enough to see many of the largest performing arts institutions in the U.S. and I can honestly say that no independent arts education facility in the country matches the Halloran Centre. I’m so proud of it. I’m so proud to be a part of the Orpheum family, and I can’t wait to come back. Hopefully with a show like Hamilton. What advice would you give to young Broadway hopefuls? Get involved! Say yes! Actors: learn about other sides of the industry! Production folk: take an acting class. Find local opportunities, find a good school, and create something on your own. People aren’t going to hand you much, but it’s a really exciting industry to be a part of.

GET OUT OF THE SUN AND INTO THE SPOTLIGHT!

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. Turn off your cell phone and other electronic devices. The light and noise from cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction to performers and those seated around and above you. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Also, please refrain from searching through your purse or bag or unwrapping candy. You may be making more noise than you think. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 525-3000 if you have any questions. In order to help ensure the safety of our guests, all weapons are prohibited at the Orpheum Theatre and the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education. Help us keep our venues safe: if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or an Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
