MARQUEE The Orpheum Theatre - Memphis

Season sponsored by:

March 15-20, 2016

Dear Friends, As you are reading this letter, I have now sat in the President’s chair of the Orpheum for a little over two months. It has been two whirlwind months, believe me! The number of people I have met and the complexity of the organization have often left my head spinning. But even with all the resulting dizziness, I have been exhilarated. Exhilarated by the pure affection for this historic theatre that every single Memphian feels. Exhilarated by the excitement the community has about the recently opened Halloran Centre. Exhilarated by the endless possibilities this position affords me. I count myself lucky to be here in Memphis, leading the Orpheum Theatre and Halloran Centre into the future. As you probably know, my wife Veronica and I moved to Memphis from Chicago. Prior to our time in Chicago, we spent ten years in Detroit having moved there from Chattanooga. In other words, we have moved around as I pursued my career. Memphis is our final stop. We are happy to say that. Not because we are tired of moving; rather because Memphis is a wonderful city in which to live! We have been overjoyed with the restaurants, the local arts scene, the sports teams and the friendly people. Upon our arrival, we quickly learned that many Memphians are almost apologetic about this city that we call home. I say to them, “Don’t be!” Having lived around the country, I know this to be true: Memphis is a terrific place! Let’s celebrate that. I am proud that the Orpheum Theatre and the Halloran Centre play a vital role in making Memphis a great city. We provide quality entertainment, insightful education programs and inclusive community activities that improve the quality of life in our town. We couldn’t do this without you, our patrons. Those who buy tickets, donate their funds and participate in our programs allow the Orpheum to thrive. Therefore, you allow us, the Board and staff, to do our part to make Memphis a better city. Thank you for being here. Thank you for supporting us. Thank you for believing a successful arts center is vital to a city’s future. Enjoy the show!

Ground zero: nailing the gangsters. What, you expected waiters? We’re talking “Bullets over Broadway,” after all, a tale of gun-toting thugs exerting their muscle into creative arenas in ways that only the great Woody Allen could dream up and that only musical theater director extraordinaire Susan Stroman could bring to life. So when he took on the assignment of creating the sartorial look of 1920s New York for the musical version of “Bullets,” costume designer William Ivey Long was thinking about thugs. “Big focus on the gangsters,” says Long, whose designs would end up winning a Drama Desk Award and his 15th Tony

Award nomination. “We knew getting the gangsters right would be the main thing. After that, the flappers, of course, and then after that, the diva.” “Or maybe, before all things, the diva,” he adds with a laugh. Long is referring to self-adoring actress Helen Sinclair (played on the “Bullets” tour by Emma Stratton), and rest assured we will be giving the diva her due presently. But for now let’s stay with the men with the guns. They include Nick Valenti, whose funding of playwright David Shayne’s new Broadway play comes with certain strings attached, and Cheech, the tough but curiously literate henchman sent along to chaperone the proceedings. This being a show originally directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, “Bullets” also features a chorus of

gangsters who…well, engage in a practice that wise guys are not generally known for doing. “You will be thrilled by the gangster ballet. I think it’s some of Susan’s strongest work,” says Long, who has now collaborated with Stroman on more than 25 productions. “It’s so masculine and threatening and just gorgeous.” That last part can be easier said than done. In a career spanning five decades and includes more than 70 Broadway credits, countless regional and international productions and work for opera, film and TV, Long has visited and garbed a lot of eras. Long has won six Tony Awards, the most recent in 2013 for the revival of “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” which continues to tour. Long’s current slate includes costumes for the upcoming Broadway musical comedy “Disaster!” and several international projects. He spent much of January in Los Angeles readying the Rydell High kids for “Grease Live” on Fox January 31. Unlike film or TV, the stage is the director’s medium. Long gets his creative marching orders from the director as well as all subsequent notes. After getting the assignment, Long launches into research the period he will be designing. If the piece has been adapted from an existing film, as is the case with “Bullets,” Long needs to know if the look of the film will specifically be referenced in the stage version (in “Bullets,” it was not). Long then drafts a number of sketches which he uses to paper the walls of his New York studio. The director visits and places yellow sticky tabs on favorites. Then Long is off and running, going from thumbnails or larger sketches to creating the actual

costumes, all the way through to multiple fittings. Costumes are refitted for new body types, but are rarely redesigned for a tour, so audiences who catch “Bullets” will see the original Broadway costumes. If a show is recreated for an international production, Long may get to go back in and rework. “I always say thank you for the London production. That’s when you get to really fix it,” he says, laughing. If Long has done his job correctly, audiences will drink in the glamour of, say, one of Helen Sinclair’s many diva gowns, but also take for granted that the outfit will allow for Stratton’s Helen to perform an acrobatic seduction dance while riding a rolling costume wardrobe known as a “gondola.” Consider the shapeless, Grecian-inspired gowns of “Downton Abbey” worn by Lady Mary Crawley, which would have been worn during the same general time period as “Bullets over Broadway.” “That’s what they wore, and there is very little fabric,” Long says. “The women looked like statues. That was one of the points of it, and Susan has them dancing and twirling and kicking. Well you can’t kick and dance and twirl in that Grecian 1920s look, so I had to transmogrify a period. You sort of shift and shape and change, and when they’re in repose, you see the ‘20s. But when they move, it’s whatever the dance requires. Hopefully no one will notice that it’s been a challenge because they look so appropriate.” “Trust me, Lady Mary couldn’t do high leg fan kicks walking down the stairs in Downton Abbey,” he adds. Memphis native and The Book Of Mormon cast member Candace Quarrels gives us the inside scoop on life as a touring Broadway actress.

What is your favorite thing about playing Nabalungi and being on tour with The Book of Mormon? Being able to share and perform such a fun, beautiful, and charming show every night has truly been a dream. Underneath all the humor and crassness of the story, there is so much truth and meaning. Naba has been a dream role of mine and I love getting to play a character who is so trusting and hopeful. As for the tour, the memories I make have been the best part. I make a conscious decision in every city to eat at least one amazing and unique meal, and to do one special thing, so as you can imagine I have too many memories to choose one! From seeing Niagara Falls for the first time, touring the White House in D.C., walking the Freedom Trail in Boston, standing on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama, to hiking some of the most beautiful trails, to swimming with dolphins, I’m full to the brim with memories.

Did you ever see shows at the Orpheum growing up? I got to see a few things there - Beauty & the Beast and The Lion King, and my love for theatre was completely solidified. I cannot wait to perform on that stage. What was the audition process like? I actually got a flyer via Facebook from one of my best friends about the show having an open call in Nashville. I had zero expectations, and was going in purely for the experience! I auditioned in the middle of a school day. The first audition was pretty chill and I only had one other person in the room. A week later I was called to New York to audition for the creative team! That same week the company flew me to L.A. to audition for the other half of the creative team. It was both a dream come true and the biggest surprise. I got the call that I would be joining the national tour my last day of finals! I literally had just walked into

the house after my vocal jury and was sitting at my kitchen table with some friends. The phone rang and the rest is history. I went from college student to a principle on the national tour of one of my favorite shows. Blessed is an understatement. Did you always know you wanted to do musical theatre? Was there a musical or play that inspired you to become an actor? Yes and no. I’ve always known that I’ve wanted to do something artistic in life. I never had an inkling of a thought of doing anything else. I ran around the house putting on shows and singing songs for my parents, and I’ve always had an itch to perform. My love of musical theatre came a bit later. I think the show that really got me interested was actually Rent. I came across it one day on HBO and became OBSESSED when I was about 13. I mean watching it every other day obsessed. I haven’t looked back since! Is there a little-known fun fact about the show that you can share with us? Well, not many people know that this show is actually one of the few tours that are on a production contract. That means that everything you see on our stage is an exact replica of the production in NYC. We are being paid a Broadway salary and give the same quality performance across the board. Our show is actually quite incestuous in that we often swap and rotate cast members between the four companies (Broadway, West End, two national tours) as needed. We’re all a big family, and all the casts mostly know one another haha! What do you miss most about Memphis now that you’re on the road? My family for sure. My parents and I are extremely close, so being so far away from them can get hard if we go too long without seeing one another. Those home-cooked meals are fairly missed as well!

How much work goes into playing a leading role in a national tour of a Broadway show? I think the work that goes into your body, mind, and soul as an actor is the hardest part of the job. For a job that technically only takes up about three hours of our day, we are thinking about that show from the second we wake up in the morning. The stamina that it takes to vocally and physically do this show is…monumental, so I try to spend as many hours at the gym as I can to keep my mind and body solid and grounded throughout the week. I watch what I eat to make sure acid reflux never flares up and burns my vocal chords, and I also am very aware of how I speak throughout the day. You’d be surprised how much damage your vocal chords can suffer simply by speaking incorrectly. I also study with Liz Caplan for continued voice study to keep my range in tip-top shape. I take all of my vitamins and other immune system supplements to ward off any sickness and treat myself to a spa day to unwind a couple times a month. It takes a lot to do this show, and this role. But I wouldn’t change it for anything. Tell us what it was like for you when you saw The Book of Mormon for the first time. I actually saw the show for the first time AFTER I got the job! I was in rehearsals in NYC and the producers finally got me a ticket to see the Broadway production. It was one of the most special moments of my entire life, and I will always remember it. To finally see the show that would quite frankly change my life completely blew my mind. I cried, I laughed, and I marveled that somehow little old me would be up there soon doing the same thing. Living my dream.
