The Book of Mormon

MARQUEE November 5 - 10, 2019

Dear Friend, Welcome to this performance of The Book of Mormon ! This is the third time the show has stopped in Memphis, so some of you have seen it before. Some of you may be seeing it for the first time. Regardless, I know you will have great a time. Enjoy and don’t be afraid to laugh – everyone else will be laughing, too! There is so much coming up at the Orpheum and Halloran Centre that I am not sure where to begin when trying to tell you about it all. But I will do my best. Next up in the On Stage at the Halloran Centre Music Series on November 23 is the Memphis band, Southern Avenue. This fiery young quintet embodies its home city’s soul, blues and gospel traditions, while adding a youthful spirit and dynamic energy all its own. Our Department of Education & Community Engagement is excited to host the second year of Camp SAY Across the USA: Memphis in partnership with the Stuttering Association for the Young. This camp will be held the weekend of November 23 and 24. It is offered at no cost to young people between the ages of 8 and 18 who stutter and aims to develop self-confidence, improve communication skills and build community. Registration is open now. As I hope you already know, our Development Department continues its Name a Seat efforts. Please consider inscribing your name in history by purchasing a seat today. The other big upcoming event is our annual fall fundraiser, The Orpheum Soiree. Friday night, November 15, the Orpheum will become a magical wonderland of sweets, adopting the theme of our January 2020 production of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The evening will include food from our wonderful restaurant partners, as well as live and silent auctions. We hope you will join us. All of this is happening just in November. In December, things really heat up! But perhaps I will wait to tell you about all that excitement in my Hello, Dolly! letter. In closing, November also is the month of our country’s annual Thanksgiving holiday. I hope all of you get to spend it with loved ones. Personally, I will spend it with my family, which has recently grown by one with the addition of our new granddaughter. Take time to be thankful this season for all the blessings we have as Americans, including our shared love – Broadway theatre! Happiest Thanksgiving to you and yours,

Brett Batterson President & CEO Orpheum Theatre Group

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

SUZANNE LANDERS Ask anybody at the Landers Firm about Suzanne Landers and they’ll talk about her tenacity, passion for the city of Memphis, and her knack for making them laugh. Suzanne has served on the Orpheum Theatre Group board since 2002 and was integral in the building of the Halloran Centre.

The Book of Mormon is the show you were most excited about this season, right? It’s at the top of my list, even though I’ve seen it several times. It is such a brilliantly constructed and executed show. They literally have you at “Hello”. I’m also looking forward to Come From Away. It’s a stunner – so succinct yet powerful. Were you a “theater kid” growing up? I’ve performed in several shows - some well-known ones like Godspell, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Annie, and a bunch of small ones that no one will have ever heard of. One thing I love about the Orpheum is that there are programs for kids who want to be onstage but also for those who aren’t so interested in Broadway or in being a performer. Offering instruction in technical theatre – lighting and design, sound, and even devising work is just as important as producing great singers and dancers. Do you have any standout memories from your years as a member of the Orpheum family? The day the Executive Committee agreed to the daunting task of building the Halloran Centre is

a day that stands out. What a turn in time that was, because we were setting out to conceive this incredible space for a multitude of uses outside of just what we’d been doing, while also adding totally new programming. It was a bit overwhelming and incredibly exciting. And now, you’re seeing how large the impact was of the decision to build the HC. Absolutely. The Orpheum and Halloran Centre are sort of hallowed places for me because of the number of people, both in Memphis and throughout the region, who come here. Sometimes I think that the citizens of Memphis don’t really realize what an incredible gem and gift the Orpheum is – one we almost lost to destruction, and one that is just as competitive and effective as the theaters across the country – including in New York. I want there to be something for everyone at the Orpheum Theatre Group, and we’re getting better and better at offering that.

The Orpheum Theatre Group, a non-profit organization, relies on the generosity of our donors. For more information on how you can support, visit Orpheum-Memphis.com/Give

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Be conscientious about the noise you may be making while enjoying concessions or searching through your bag. Please unwrap candy or other concessions before the show or during intermission, and refrain from rattling ice in cups. You may be distracting or disturbing the patrons around you and the actors on stage. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
