BROADWAY SEASON SPONSORED BY

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO Cher. Madonna. Beyoncé. CATS! Some entertainers and shows are so well known that they do not need a last name or second word to be recognized. People around the world instantly nod in acknowledgement when they hear a single word. Likewise, some logos are so singular that everyone knows the brand when they see the image. Two yellow cat eyes with a dancer in their focus is one such logo. Everyone recognizes the Broadway musical CATS when they see those eyes. We are happy to welcome the only-one-word-needed-cat-eyed-logo production back to the Orpheum Theatre for the 18th time in the show’s long history. Based on the 1939 Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s American production opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1982. It had previously opened in London in 1981. It won the Best Musical category at both London’s Olivier Awards and New York’s Tony Awards. CATS remains the fourthlongest-running show in Broadway history after its 18-year run closed on Broadway in 2000. There have been numerous revivals of CATS through the years, including the production you will see today. Why has it remained so popular, you ask? I, of course, have an unsolicited theory about that. I think CATS has entered the rarified air of such perennial entertainment hits as The Nutcracker and Disney’s The Lion King. These are shows that parents took their children to see. Many times, it might have been the first time these young people experienced the magic of live entertainment. As these children grew, and had their own children, these parents wanted their children to know the same joy they had as youngsters by introducing them to these productions. And so the magic continues year-after-year. Do I have data to support my theory? Absolutely not. But I am sticking with it nonetheless. In any case, thank you for being here this evening. Enjoy the magical world of these singing cats. And if you brought a young person to the theatre to share the joy you felt as a youngster, I salute you. As I am fond of saying, “There is no greater gift you can give a young person than the gift of the performing arts.”

In The Band’s Visit, Playwright Itamar Moses Helps Strangers Tell The Truth

BY MARK BLANKENSHIP Sometimes, you can only be honest with strangers. “It’s much safer to talk about things with someone you don’t know and will never see again,” says playwright Itamar Moses. “They don’t know the story you’ve built up around yourself.” That curious freedom shapes The Band’s Visit, the new Broadway musical about a group of Egyptian musicians who get lost on their way to a concert in Israel. Stranded in a small town, they pass the time with the locals, eating at their tables and sleeping in their spare rooms. To Moses, who wrote the musical’s book, that’s a perfect catalyst for drama. “Everything that happens is only possible because these two groups of people don’t know each other,” he says. Take Iris, an Israeli wife and mother who finds her own birthday party crashed by musicians her husband brings home. After years of mute frustration with her marriage, she suddenly reveals everything. “The eyes of

these strangers on her life make it impossible to ignore what she’s been trying to suppress,” Moses says. The same is true for characters who confess their dreams, regrets, and loves. Ironically, they may be even more honest with each other because they don’t share a language. The Egyptians speak Arabic and the Israelis speak Hebrew, but when they talk to each other, they use halting, tentative English. “When you don’t have unlimited language as a tool, you really have to get to the point right away,” Moses says. “People aren’t going to talk around the truth, because they don’t have the words.” Naturally, that limited vocabulary affected Moses’ playwriting. “But I never lamented it as a limitation,” he says. “I really enjoyed the tension between the simplicity of the language and the depth of the emotion. Sometimes there’s nothing better than having a constraint.”

WHO’S WHO program in NYC. Endless thanks to her agents at for Literature. Eliot died in January 1965 and was LDC Artist Representation and her entire family for posthumously awarded the 1983 Tony Award for the book of CATS. the constant love and support. @alexia_waites ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Composer) has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968) to Cinderella (2021) his work has been consistently seen on world stages. Before the covid pandemic hit, Lloyd Webber had shows continually running in the West End for 48 years and on Broadway for 41. When Sunset Boulevard joined School Of Rock, Catsand Phantom of the Opera he equalled Rodgers and Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. Lloyd Webber owns seven London theatres including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Over the past three years the latter has been completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings has meant that considerable work has been undertaken across his theatre portfolio during the pandemic, including the complete re-modelling and re-seating of the Gillian Lynne. Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects such as the Music In Secondary School Trust and commissioning research into diversity in theatre. Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published by Harper Collins in March 2018. THOMAS STEARNS ELIOT (Poet & Lyricist) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888. He was educated at Harvard, the Sorbonne in Paris and Merton College, Oxford. He settled in England in 1915 and taught briefly at two schools before joining Lloyds Bank in the city of London. His first volume of poems, Prufrock and Other Observations, was published in 1917. The Waste Land, his most famous work, was first published in 1922. In 1925 he left the bank to become a director of the publishing house of Faber. There have been several individual and collected editions of his poetry, as well as volumes of his literary and social criticism; he also wrote a number of verse plays, including Murder in the Cathedral, which was commissioned for the Canterbury Festival of 1935. T.S. Eliot had a great affection for cats, and “Possum” was his alias among his friends. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats appeared in October 1939 and was the basis for CATS. He received many honors and distinctions, among them the Order of Merit and the Nobel Prize

TREVOR NUNN (Director). From 1968 to 1986, he was the youngest-ever artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, directing more than 30 productions, from classics to new works including Nicholas Nickleby and Les Misérables. He directed the world premieres of Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia, The Coast of Utopia and Rock ’n’ Roll; and of CATS, Sunset Boulevard, Starlight Express, Aspects of Love and The Woman in White by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Other theatre includes Hamlet, Richard II, Inherit the Wind, Kiss Me Kate (Old Vic); A Little Night Music (West End and Broadway); Heartbreak House, Flare Path, The Tempest (Theatre Royal, Haymarket); All That Fall (59E59); The Wars of the Roses (Rose Theatre); Pericles (TFANA).
