Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

MARQUEE January 14 - 19, 2020

Dear Friends, Welcome to Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! I am happy you have chosen to spend your evening at the Orpheum Theatre watching this terrific production. For those of you who are faithful readers of these letters, you know that I rarely highlight individual shows in this space. Rather, I tell you about our series in general ways, including upcoming performances that can be purchased together as a package. Today, I am going to break that self-imposed rule against marketing individual shows because we have two productions coming up very soon that I hope you do not miss! The first is The Play That Goes Wrong. It runs February 5 through 9 here at the Orpheum. It was an option on our season package, so if you’re a season ticket holder and you did not pick up this title, I hope you’ll join us by purchasing single tickets to this wildly funny farce. The premise of the show is exactly as the title suggests; a community theatre attempts to stage a serious murder mystery, but everything that can go wrong does. Scenery falls apart, actors get hurt and cannot perform, stage managers who do not know the lines try to fill in, plots get twisted… you get the picture. This is one of the funniest plays I have seen in a long, long time! I highly recommend it to everyone. No one should miss its comic hilarity. Please make plans to join us for The Play That Goes Wrong. The following week, the Orpheum welcomes the return of “America’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World”, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. I have had the pleasure of presenting the Ailey company in three major American cities (Detroit, Chicago, and Memphis). I may well be the only arts presenter who can make this claim. The motivation for doing so can be found in my deep admiration for the artists, the company, and the legacy they represent. If you have seen Ailey in the past, I encourage you to come this year to see their new works along with the classic masterpiece, Revelations (which, by the way, I consider the greatest piece of American choreography). If you have never seen Ailey, I encourage you to come, as your life will be forever changed by the experience. Thank you for being a patron of the arts. Thank you for joining us for this performance. Thank you for considering The Play That Goes Wrong and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater if only because I highly recommend both shows. I promise, you will thank me for the recommendation later. See you at the theatre!

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

ARTSMEMPHIS

ArtsMemphis is a beacon for our city’s arts community, awarding $2.5 million to art makers last year.

When they’re not hard at work crafting grant applications, mentoring artists, or stewarding donors, the staff at ArtsMemphis can be found at Playhouse on the Square for an opening night, the Metal Museum for a molding class, or the Levitt Shell for a summer concert. CEO Elizabeth Rouse and her team of 6 not only love our city, but they love the artists who bring it to life. Their vision is for every individual to feel pride in our city’s authentic cultural assets and experience the impact of the arts in their lives. The Orpheum Theatre Group is one of over 70 local organizations to benefit from ArtsMemphis’ grants program, through which 164 grants were awarded last year. Memphis is the city it is because of ArtsMemphis and their generous donors, who ensure that the arts will continue to thrive in the bluff city.

The Orpheum Theatre Group, a non-profit organization, relies on the generosity of our donors. For more information on how you can support, visit Orpheum-Memphis.com/Give

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Be conscientious about the noise you may be making while enjoying concessions or searching through your bag. Please unwrap candy or other concessions before the show or during intermission, and refrain from rattling ice in cups. You may be distracting or disturbing the patrons around you and the actors on stage. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
