Dear Friends, ®

Welcome to the Tony Award winning revival of The Color Purple! We are glad you are spending a few hours with us, seeing this marvelous production. In 1928, Memphis was excited to welcome the NEW Orpheum Theatre to its thriving downtown. It was built to replace the first Orpheum Theatre on the corner of Main and Beale, which burned to the ground in 1923. Grander and more elegantly appointed than its predecessor, the new Orpheum featured elaborate crystal chandeliers and a mighty Wurlitzer Organ. We are proud that our beautiful theatre looks much the same now as it did upon its opening 90 years ago. Today, you are here to watch a Broadway musical. But over the years, the Orpheum has been Memphis’ home for many different events; vaudeville, symphonic music, opera, ballet, rock concerts, comedians, and modern dance have joined Broadway shows to make the Orpheum the valued cultural gem it is for our city. In addition, the Orpheum has provided arts education opportunities for hundredsof-thousands of young people through the years. All of this takes money. As a non-profit institution, the Orpheum Theatre Group depends on donations from generous people like yourself. People who understand the importance of keeping the Orpheum around for the next 90 years. To those who are already donors, I thank you. Your ongoing support is crucial to our ability to serve the public and maintain our facilities. To those who might be ready to make their first donation, I offer an easy way to do so. Remember the mighty Wurlitzer organ I told you about a few paragraphs ago? Unfortunately, after 90 years of entertaining Memphians, it is in danger of going silent. Without your help, experts have told us it may not live to see another Summer Movie Series. Therefore, in honor of the Orpheum’s 90th Anniversary, I ask you to consider a gift to our Save the Wurlitzer campaign. To date, we have raised a little over $35,000, but we have a long way to go. When you leave the theatre tonight, please consider throwing a dollar or two into the buckets the ushers are holding at the doors. We also have a Giving Jar at concierge where you can easily donate $28 via debit or credit card. Or when you get home, write a check for a hundred dollars and drop it in the mail to us. Every dollar helps, and your support will not go unnoticed. Thank you for your consideration. Enjoy this performance of The Color Purple.

CREATING AN

ORIGINAL MUSICAL SOMETHING ROTTEN!, theAward-nominated Tony Award-nominated show Something Rotten!, the Tony show that’s that’s touring the country this season, is an increasing rarity touring the country this season, is an increasing rarity among Broadway musicals: it’s a completely original work not based on a movie, play, book or other source material.

S

OMETHING ROTTEN! originated from an idea that brothers Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick had two decades ago. Karey, who started his career as a successful screenwriter for Disney Animation, ® and Wayne, a Grammy Award -winning songwriter, imagined a writing team trying to come up with a hit play under the shadow of the most famous of playwrights, William Shakespeare. Karey remembers, “It was a series of conversations that happened over many years. We were big history buffs. We started with ‘wouldn’t it be funny if Shakespeare’s London were a lot like what Broadway was like in the ‘30s?’ And went from there.” Eventually bringing British comedy writer John O’Farrell on board to co-author the book with Karey, the creators sold the idea to Tony-winning producer Kevin McCollum, who had rolled the dice with such original musicals a Rent and Avenue Q. Tony winner Casey Nicholaw, Something Rotten! director and choreographer, says creating a show based on a new idea is just fun. “You can go

anywhere with it; you don’t have restrictions, you don’t have something to follow,” he says. “But of course you always seem to get to a place in Act Two where you’re going, ‘Oh my god. What happens now?’ Or, ‘We need a scene to get us to the end!’” By the time Something Rotten! opened on Broadway in April 2015, after more than four years of work, the Kirkpatricks had written more than 50 songs (15 made it into the show) and O’Farrell and Karey had done countless rewrites. “This was really an education, like four years of college, and Casey was our professor,” Karey says. “The good news is, the songs we wrote our senior year were much more successful than the ones we wrote our freshman year.” And it could be said the team graduated with top honors: Something Rotten! was nominated for 10 ® Tony Awards , including Best Musical. O’Farrell concludes, “There’s just one great song after another. And in between, the jokes are funny. What more do you want?”

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. Turn off your cell phone and other electronic devices. The light and noise from cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction to performers and those seated around and above you. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Also, please refrain from searching through your purse or bag or unwrapping candy. You may be making more noise than you think. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
