Dear Evan Hansen

MARQUEE October 8 - 13, 2019

Dear Friends, Wow! After a summer filled with the excitement of Hamilton, welcome to the kick-off performance of our 2019-2020 Broadway Season: the Tony Award-Winning Best Musical, Dear Evan Hansen. This musical moved me in ways musicals do not usually move me when I saw it on Broadway in 2017. I am certain it will affect you this evening in a similar way. It is powerful storytelling at its best! Throughout these performances of Dear Evan Hansen, the Orpheum Theatre Group is pleased to launch a new Name A Seat campaign. With the installation of the refurbished seats in the upper levels of the theatre, we are proud that all our chairs have been completely redone within the past few years. We hope that you, our patron, notice the improved comfort of your seat. Have you also noticed there are a few chairs throughout the auditorium that have plaques on the arms with people’s names on them? These are left from a fundraising campaign that was decades ago. Now, we are giving you the chance to add your name to the Orpheum’s historic legacy by sponsoring a chair and having a plaque put on the arm of your named seat! Are you a long-time subscriber who has finally worked your way up to one of the best seats in the house? Now you want people to know that this seat is where you sit at our Broadway shows? Then Name A Seat. Do you have a special memory of seeing your favorite rock star as a teenager from a specific seat in the theatre? Name A Seat. Did your spouse turn to you in the middle of a show at the Orpheum and ask you to marry them? Name A Seat. Depending on where your chosen seat is located, you can inscribe a plaque on the arm of your chair for as little as $500. Your gift is 100% tax-deductible. And all naming will last forever – each seat will be so-named in perpetuity. Please consider supporting the Orpheum in all its splendor by helping to defray the expense of seat maintenance by naming your seat today! Do it for yourself. Do it as a gift for someone you love. Do it to keep one of Memphis’ jewels shining brightly. For whatever reason you decide to donate, do it today. There is a form in your Marquee you can use to Name A Seat. You can inquire at the concierge desk in the lobby at intermission. Or you can go online or call the Orpheum any day of the week. Whatever is most convenient for you. With apologies to Nike, JUST DO IT! Name A Seat today. Thanks for being a loyal member of the Orpheum family.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

PHILIP GOULD President of Gould’s Salon Spa and Gould’s Academy is a member of the Orpheum’s Club of 20 and a long-time donor. He has been a Board member for 7 years and now serves as Board Chair. We sat down with him to hear about his unique connection to the Theatre.

You have a unique connection with the Orpheum Theatre Group through your dad, Sam Gould. Tell us about him. My dad was a professional drummer who toured the country. In the early 1930s, he landed a job in Memphis when he was hired by the Orpheum as the house drummer. This was at the height of vaudeville, just three years after the Orpheum reopened. So, as I was growing up, I was heavily influenced and guided by his love for music. My family went to New York City pretty regularly to go to Broadway shows or see some jazz. I grew up loving the performing arts. Did you play music, too? I followed in my dad’s footsteps for a while and played drums all through high school. I was the drummer for my high school’s production of Oklahoma!, which was actually the first musical ever produced at Memphis University School.

And now, you’re a supporter of the High School Musical Theatre Awards. Yes! I love the High School Musical Theatre Awards and I strongly encourage everyone to see that show every year. The kids are just incredible. The Education staff at the Halloran Centre have done an amazing job introducing new programs that are engaging our young people in the community in a new way. The talent in our Mid-South students is just astounding. I love to see young people finding a love for the theatre so early on. Helping young people find a love for the theatre – is that what inspires you to support the Orpheum? I love what’s going on at the Orpheum right now. Every year, the Broadway season is outstanding but it’s so much more than that. With Mending Hearts Camp, Camp SAY, summer workshops for both kids and teachers – there are endless ways for people in the community to engage with the Orpheum. It’s important to me to give to this organization that is doing so much good.

The Orpheum Theatre Group, a non-profit organization, relies on the generosity of our donors. For more information on how you can support, visit Orpheum-Memphis.com/Give

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Be conscientious about the noise you may be making while enjoying concessions or searching through your bag. Please unwrap candy or other concessions before the show or during intermission, and refrain from rattling ice in cups. You may be distracting or disturbing the patrons around you and the actors on stage. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
