MARQUEE July 9 - 28, 2019

Dear Friend, THE DAY HAS FINALLY ARRIVED! The day you see HAMILTON in-person at the Orpheum. For some of you, the wait has been intolerable since we announced the show was coming to Memphis in the spring of 2017. Others may have only purchased your ticket last month. Regardless, all of us at the Orpheum Theatre Group are pleased to welcome you to this performance. As you may know, I have been lucky to have a long career in show business. It started when I was five years old. The first play in which I ever performed was a little show called The Bear Hug. It was the story of a young boy who didn’t know what to give his mother for her birthday, so he goes through the forest asking all the animals what would make a good present. In the end, the bear tells him to give his mother a great, big bear hug. I played a horse. Mind you, I have no idea what a horse was doing in the forest. Nor do I have any recollection of what I suggested to the boy, except I recall that a lot of “neighing” and pawing at the ground was involved. Anyway, from those humble beginnings in The Bear Hug to today, I have seen some big shows hit Broadway and the touring circuit. The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Wicked ; the list is long. The shows are huge. But in those 55 years in show business, I have never seen a phenomenon like HAMILTON. While we could take days to discuss all the reasons for this production’s success, I believe it is because the show contains many elements that make live theatre important to humanity. The story is based on history, even if it occasionally strays a little for dramatic impact. The flaws of the characters are real, even while they achieve a greatness few ever reach. The emotions experienced by the audience are universal. We feel for the characters as they succeed and fail. It is in the telling of this American story that the true genius of HAMILTON lies. It is primarily told in rap and hip-hop. Rhythms unfamiliar to our Founding Fathers and, perhaps, new to many of us in the audience today. Yet, this idiom delivers its punch overand-over and brings a story of long ago into the realm of the modern world.

It ignores the traditional rules of casting. By casting people of all races in roles they might not normally have been allowed to play, the story becomes universal. It teaches us that the color of one’s skin does not separate us — that we all feel the same triumphs and pains; the same thoughts and emotions. It takes an 832-page historical biography and distills it into a two-hourand- forty-five-minute evening of entertainment. It does not drag nor make us restless. It does not rely on numerous set and costume changes to transport us from location to location. It does not waste precious stage-time with unnecessary background information; every word moves the story forward.

HAMILTON is a transformative theatrical experience. It has changed the face of American musical theatre. It has been embraced by a younger demographic than one sees in a traditional audience. It has brought a cornucopia of diversity to Broadway; equally inviting all to the table. It challenges us to think differently, discuss issues differently, and in the end, behave differently. It reminds us why we fell in love with the theatre in the first place. Not because we craved the applause of playing a wayward horse in the forest in our first childhood production. Rather because, despite the rise of social media sites, video games, and on-demand television, experiencing a live performance in a communal setting is a basic human need.

HAMILTON is great storytelling. It makes us laugh together. Cry together. Learn together. That is the power of live theatre. HAMILTON does it in a new and innovative way. The world of Broadway will never be the same. I am so happy to bring this show to Memphis! I am so happy that the Orpheum Theatre Group is the first to present this show in Tennessee. I am so happy you are here tonight to experience the magic that is this phenomenon called HAMILTON !

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. The light and noise from cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction to performers and those seated around and above you. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Be conscientious about the noise you may be making while enjoying concessions or searching through your bag. Please unwrap candy or other concessions before the show or during intermission, and refrain from rattling ice in cups. You may be distracting or disturbing the patrons around you and the actors on stage. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
