Hello Dolly!

MARQUEE December 17-22, 2019

Dear Friends, Happy holidays! No matter the holiday you celebrate this month, December is a special time of year for many faiths and nationalities. It is also an extremely hectic month for most of us. I am thankful that in the middle of this busy time, you have chosen to spend an evening (or an afternoon) with us here at the Orpheum. Hello, Dolly! is certain to take the edge off whatever else you may have going on right now. At least for a couple of hours, anyway. That is the magic of live theatre. It transports us out of our day-to-day routine. It lifts our spirits and our thoughts to a new plane. It brings us joy. Live theatre makes our quality of life better! All of us at the Orpheum are pleased we can provide live theatre to the Mid-South throughout the year, but especially during this special month. You are about to see one of my favorite ‘classic’ musicals. Based upon the stage play The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder, which was itself rewritten from Wilder’s earlier work The Merchant of Yonkers, which was derived from the Johann Nestroy farce Einen Jux will er sich machen (He Will Go on a Spree or He’ll Have Himself a Good Time), which was a retelling of the 1835 British play A Day Well Spent by John Oxenford, Hello, Dolly! has thrilled audiences around the world since 1964. Many wonderful actresses have played Dolly Levi through the years, perhaps none more iconic than Carol Channing, the original Dolly. Ms. Channing even toured to Memphis with the show a number of years ago. This particular production opened in New York in 2017 with Bette Midler in the title role. It won that year’s Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical (and counted my personal vote among its winning total). The production launched its national tour last season with Betty Buckley portraying Dolly Levi. Now, we are extremely excited to bring it to Memphis with the incomparable Carolee Carmello. As you enjoy the show today, please take a moment to consider how close to your heart you hold the Orpheum Theatre. As you make your year-end giving plans, I ask you to keep the Orpheum in your thoughts. Consider Naming-a-Seat as a holiday gift this year. Make a cash donation to support our many education programs. Support our On Stage at the Halloran Centre series with a sponsorship. We appreciate all gifts, large and small, as they allow us to continue to bring the best of Broadway to Memphis and keep the Orpheum shining bright. I hope each of you have the happiest holiday season. I wish you peace and love as we welcome 2020. I thank you for being a fan of live theatre and supporting the Orpheum Theatre Group. Enjoy Hello, Dolly!

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

SCOTT HENNESSY A performing arts lover, generous donor, passionate board member, community activist, and huge fan of Hello, Dolly!, Scott has been an integral part of the Orpheum Theatre Group’s growth for the last eight years. Theatre has been part of your life since the beginning. Tell us about it. I grew up in the Northeast, so going to New York City with my family to see Broadway shows was a normal part of growing up for me. I went to a large high school and every single student there was encouraged to participate in the school musical. It didn’t matter if you were a sports guy or played in the band, everyone pitched in to the show, onstage or backstage. I was the lead character in The Music Man and West Side Story. Theatre was a big part of the high school experience for everyone at my school. And you’ve continued to support the theatre since moving to Memphis. Well I moved to Memphis for work in 1994 and coming from the Northeast, growing up with Broadway, I was just blown away by the Orpheum. I was used to seeing theatres thrive in Philadelphia and New York City, but it was incredible to see such a robust organization right here in Memphis. The Orpheum does so much for the community – far more than just Broadway. Exposing thousands of kids to the arts, instilling self-confidence, and even reaching unique populations through Mending Hearts and Camp SAY. The access we’re providing is growing rapidly and Memphis students need that engagement with the arts. Arts education is a great investment and something I’m passionate about supporting.

York City and it was just incredible. It felt like the longest day of our lives, about 15 hours. We saw My Fair Lady and The Iceman Cometh starring Denzel Washington, sat in on chat-backs with Broadway actors and directors, and had lunch and dinner all together. It was a glimpse into this huge operation that so many different people throughout the country make happen – a totally unique experience. What are you most excited about as we get closer to our 100th birthday? So many great things! As we expand our reach, we are taking a much more active, engaging role in the city. The Orpheum is an important space for arts education in the region. And everyone I know has such a positive experience at the Orpheum. It makes Memphis a better place to live and to raise a family.

Tell us about your Tony Voter for a Day experience! In 2017, I won the Tony Voter for a Day trip at the annual auction, so I went with the Orpheum team and Brett to New

(with Francine and John Pascal); Mack & Mabel (Tony nomination); The Grand Tour; 42nd Street (with Mark Bramble; Tony Award); and Harrigan and Hart (Tony nomination). He is also the lyricist of Barnum (music by Cy Coleman, Tony nomination) and I Love My Wife (Tony nomination). Mr. Stewart died in 1987. JERRY HERMAN (Music & Lyrics) remains one of the most iconic and beloved composers in the American theater. His legendary scores have spawned such standards as “I Am What I Am,” “The Best of Times,” “Mame,” “If He Walked into My Life,” “We Need a Little Christmas” and “Hello, Dolly!” His first Broadway musical, Milk and Honey (1961), ran for 543 performances. He made history in 1964 with Hello, Dolly! (10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, a Broadway record held for 37 years), which was followed by yet another smash, Mame, in 1966. With Dolly! and Mame still running, Herman had the rare distinction of having three Broadway shows playing simultaneously when Dear World opened in 1969. In 1974, Mack & Mabel opened (and remains one of his best-loved scores) and was followed by 1979’s The Grand Tour. Herman’s most recent Broadway show, La Cage aux Folles, became another phenomenon, winning the Tony Award in 1984 for Best Musical. It was successfully revived in 2004 and 2010, winning the Tony for Best Revival each time. Two of Herman’s most cherished songs from Hello, Dolly! are the emotional highlights of the DisneyPixar classic Wall-E, cementing Herman’s place in American popular culture. His countless awards and honors include multiple Tony Awards, Grammy Awards, Olivier Awards, Drama Desk Awards, the Johnny Mercer Award, the Richard Rodgers Award, the Oscar Hammerstein Award, the Frederick Loewe Award, membership in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Theater Hall of Fame and most recently, The Kennedy Center Honor.

WHO’S WHO in the CAST DAVID MERRICK (Original Producer) claimed to be born on November 4, 1954, the night his first Broadway musical Fanny opened. His second production, in 1955, was Thornton Wilder’s comedy The Matchmaker. He immediately determined it would make a brilliant musical—which, in 1964, turned out to be Hello, Dolly!. At a time when few producers managed more than one production a year, he stunned Broadway in 1957 with three hits in one month (including John Osborne’s ground breaking Look Back in Anger). The following November, he opened three shows in a single week. At the height of his activity, he had eight productions running simultaneously on Broadway. His musicals included Jamaica with Lena Horne; Destry Rides Again with Andy Griffith and Dolores Gray; Gypsy with Ethel Merman; Take Me Along with Jackie Gleason; Irma La Douce; Do Re Mi with Phil Silvers and Nancy Walker; Carnival! with Anna Maria Alberghetti and Jerry Orbach; I Can Get It for You Wholesale with Elliott Gould and Barbra Streisand; Stop the World—I Want to Get Off and The Roar of the Greasepaint—The Smell of the Crowd with Anthony Newley; Oliver!; 110 in the Shade; I Do! I Do! with Mary Martin and Robert Preston; The Happy Time with Robert Goulet; Promises, Promises with Orbach; Sugar with Robert Morse and Tony Roberts; Mack & Mabel with Preston and Bernadette Peters; and the legendary 42nd Street with Orbach and Tammy Grimes. Notable plays included The Entertainer with Laurence Olivier; The World of Suzie Wong; A Taste of Honey with Angela Lansbury; Becket with Olivier and Anthony Quinn; Sunday in New York with Robert Redford; Luther with Albert Finney; Arturo Ui with Christopher Plummer; One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest with Kirk Douglas; Inadmissible Evidence with Nicol Williamson; Cactus Flower with Lauren Bacall and Barry Nelson; Peter Weiss’ Marat/Sade; Brian Friel’s Philadelphia, Here I Come!; Woody Allen’s Don’t Drink the Water and Play It Again, Sam; Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and Travesties; Forty Carats with Julie Harris; Child’s Play; and Peter Brook’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to name a few. An 11-time Tony Award winner, Merrick (1911–2000) produced more than 80 plays and musicals. JOEY PARNES (Executive Producer). THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Be conscientious about the noise you may be making while enjoying concessions or searching through your bag. Please unwrap candy or other concessions before the show or during intermission, and refrain from rattling ice in cups. You may be distracting or disturbing the patrons around you and the actors on stage. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
