Things are happening so fast at The Orpheum I am having a challenging time keeping up with all of the wonderful projects we have underway. First, the concert schedule is booming. Eddie Vedder and comedian Daniel Tosh sold out in minutes, Celtic Woman is coming back for their seventh performance at The Orpheum, and Trace Adkins and Yanni are also on sale for their engagements. We will be announcing our next exciting Broadway Season in mid-April, and we feel it is going to bring big smiles to the faces of our loyal patrons. One of the most challenging projects that the Memphis Development Foundation Board and staff have ever attempted is the recently announced construction of the new PERFORMING ARTS AND LEADERSHIP CENTRE, which will be located adjacent to the Theatre. I have enjoyed many exciting events and developments in my 31 years with the fabulous Orpheum Theatre – but this new venture, which will be standing and serving for many generations to come, is a very rare opportunity to contribute such a valuable resource to our community. Once complete, over 100,000 young people a year will be able expand their horizons thanks to performing arts and leadership training. Many of you will see the potential here for positive change, and I encourage you to join us and help in any way possible. Give us the opportunity to explain what this will mean to Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, Millington, Lakeland and Arlington. We are all one community, and when we work together to seize these opportunities we all benefit. Here is your chance and invitation to say someday – “I helped build that!”

ALL IN THE FAMILY

During the early 1930s, Herman Inderbitzen came to work at The Orpheum Theatre as an usher. Only a few years before, the newly constructed Orpheum Theatre had opened, dazzling the city with its architectural beauty and vaudeville acts. Herman Inderbitzen, like many other ushers of his time, has become an essential part of The Orpheum’s history. He and many others pioneered the tradition that has since evolved into the Friends of the Orpheum (FOTO), a not-for-profit civic organization whose primary function is to provide volunteer ushers in support of The Orpheum Theatre’s management needs. A few decades later, Herman’s son in law John Hiltonsmith joined The Orpheum family as the Theatre’s organist. Since then, John has performed on The Orpheum’s Mighty Wurlitzer Organ where he has entertained audiences at special events and during the summer movie series. Additionally, he has served as the curator for the organ, overseeing the maintenance and preservation of this musical treasure. John’s wife, Sherry Hiltonsmith, is also a member of The Orpheum team. Sherry is a bartender during Orpheum events and also designs jewelry which she graciously donates to The Orpheum’s annual auction. In 2006, John’s daughter and Herman Inderbitzen’s granddaughter, Jennifer Hiltonsmith, joined The Orpheum box office staff where she worked part-time while attending college. The Orpheum Theatre would like to recognize and thank the Hiltonsmiths and their family for their service and loyal commitment to the Theatre, one that has spanned generations. 30
