Ah the Holidays! A time of giving thanks and sharing goodwill. Two weeks ago I marked my 33rd year as President of the Memphis Development Foundation that operates The Orpheum and I caught myself reflecting on all that has transpired over a third of a century. Boy, that sounds like a long time when put that way. As I was reflecting, people’s faces and past audiences kept popping into my mind. Some nights there are as many as 2,400 people smiling and looking forward to what a show - like tonight’s - will be like once they get that Halloran guy off the stage. But, let me reminisce. I owe a lot of people a sincere THANK YOU for making The Orpheum what it is today: a beautiful place with fabulous things happening regularly. Musicals like Wicked, dances like The Nutcracker produced by Ballet Memphis, comedy like Jay Leno, concerts by performers too numerous to list, classic movies and a myriad of special productions like the one night performances of Cary Grant and Gregory Peck come to mind. So let me say, “thank you” this way and, while I know it is not very personal, there are so many of you that have supported this historic venue and its important mission to the Mid-South. The sobering thought that I look at in the very near future is the exciting challenge of building “the next big thing” for us as a community: the construction of the Centre for Performing Arts. The next time you join us at The Orpheum you will see the beginning of that great undertaking. Construction is scheduled to begin January 15th. I know you will be there to support something that will last for years to come and help hundreds of thousands of young people grow, experience and develop so that the future generations will be even better than ours and those that preceded us.

Edith Brown has been living her dream for 39 years. Thanks to Baptist. Edith Brown is a Memphis native who always wanted to be a nurse, and she got that opportunity when Baptist Memphis hired her in 1974. But her dreams almost ended sooner than later. “I felt a massive chest pain that literally took my breath away,” she remembers about her unexpected heart attack. “I thought, this can’t be happening.” Surrounded by the very nurses and doctors she worked with, Edith underwent surgery to put a stent in her heart, and nine months later, she had a coronary artery bypass. Now a nursing staff development specialist at Baptist, Edith Brown continues to live her dream, thanks to Baptist’s commitment to cardiac excellence.
