BROADWAY SEASON SPONSORED BY

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO Happy February! This month we have two Broadway musicals at the Orpheum, Hadestown, opening on the 1st and Tootsie, opening on the 15th. February will be a great month with these two productions gracing our stage! As wonderful as it is to have these two shows at the Orpheum in the same month, the shows are also forever intertwined in my mind for another reason. As most of you know, I have the great honor of being an Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award voter. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly. I travel to New York City regularly to see theatre, as a voter can only vote in a category in which they have seen all the nominated productions. As one never knows until late spring which shows are nominated, it means I try to see every show that opens on Broadway in a season. Anyway, to accomplish this, I often see two shows a day when there are matinees on Wednesday and Saturdays. Such was the case on Wednesday, May 16, 2019. That day I saw the matinee of Tootsie and the evening performance of Hadestown. Accompanying me was a young University of Memphis student, Benjamin McIlvain, who had won the opportunity to be a “Tony Voter for a Day” at our annual auction. I am sure Benjamin would agree, it was a great day of theatre. Both shows competed for numerous Tony awards that year. Hadestown ended up victorious in the Best Musical category, while Tootsie won the Best Book of a Musical award. It was a difficult decision to decide which show to vote for, as I enjoyed both shows tremendously. I laughed from the beginning to the end of Tootsie, while Hadestown intrigued me with its innovative storytelling and fascinating characters. I am not going to tell you how I ultimately voted, as I would never want you to think I prefer one show over another on our season. Especially when those two shows are here in the same month. But after you see them both, I would love to hear how you would have voted. So, if you see me in the lobby at a performance of CATS in March, which is our next production, please take a moment to tell me how you would have cast your ballot. It will be fascinating to see what you think of our February productions. Thank you for spending two evenings with us this month, seeing the best of Broadway at the Orpheum! I hope you enjoy both shows as much as I did when I saw them on the same day back in 2019.
