Dear Friend, Growing up in a small city in Iowa, I was introduced to Broadway musicals at a young age. You see, my mother presented touring musicals at our own Orpheum Theatre in downtown Davenport (which means, of course, that after all the years I have spent in this business, I ended up being my mother – presenting Broadway musicals at an Orpheum Theatre). Watching those classic musicals, I remember wishing that shows were written about normal people living normal lives in normal places. While I enjoyed watching musicals set in the South Pacific or Siam or even that then-distant-place-I-had-never-seen, New York City, I wondered why musicals did not tell the stories of normal people, like those I saw around me every day. Were their stories not interesting enough to be made into a musical? That is why I love Waitress as much as I do. It is set in a small town not unlike many small towns across America. It features a young woman who works in a diner and bakes pies; a young woman who dreams of a better life. The lead character, Jenna, does not end up a celebrity or living with Daddy Warbucks. She simply finds her own peace with her place in the world. Her concluding victory is normal; a normal person living a normal life in a normal place. A place like Davenport, Iowa. Or Memphis, Tennessee. Jenna, the pie-baker, has a story that is worth telling. Here at the Orpheum, we believe everyone has a story that is worth telling. Through poetry slams, summer camps, and other education programs, we want the young people of the mid-south to understand that their stories matter. Through programs with Kirby Pines Retirement Community, we want our area’s aged population to know their lives matter. And through the stories we bring to our stages in plays, musicals and songs, we want everyone to identify elements of these stories that help them find meaning in their lives. At this performance of Waitress, you will see the story of one small-town pie maker. She is normal. Her story is like our own – a story worth telling; a story worth watching. I hope you love this show as much as I do. Thank you for your support of the Orpheum Theatre Group. It allows us to continue helping the citizens of the Mid-South celebrate their stories. Yours, In Pie,

Brett Batterson President & CEO Orpheum Theatre Group

An education that suits her.

Thanks to MOST,

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. Turn off your cell phone and other electronic devices. The light and noise from cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction to performers and those seated around and above you. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Be conscientious about the noise you may be making while enjoying concessions or searching through your bag. You may be distracting or disturbing the patrons around you and the actors on stage. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
