On the page across from this letter is a note I received from a girl named Liberty. I have read little Liberty’s letter a dozen times, and each time I get more determined to keep the Orpheum focused on giving our next generation a chance to be the best they can be. For most children, attending their first live theatre performance is an experience they remember all their lives. Live theatre inspires children. It teaches them to reach for their goals. It fosters creativity and a sense of community. The Orpheum believes that all children should have an opportunity to experience live theatre. So each year, the Theatre provides meaningful arts experiences for kids from City, County, private, and parochial schools through the many valuable programs offered by our Education and Community Department. Liberty’s letter constantly reminds me of all the reasons the Memphis Development Foundation and the Orpheum Staff are committed to the creation of the Orpheum’s new Centre for Performing Arts. More than a place to congregate, the new Centre will be a place where children preschool through college will find opportunity – experience working with other kids from every nook and cranny in the Mid-South. Not just learning to perform, but being part of a team that works together to make something that resembles a dream – a happy time. Liberty was rewarded for sending me her letter. Her entire class of 3rd graders was invited to attend one of the Orpheum’s Student Matinee shows and see something spectacular on the stage. Yes we’ll see Liberty and all of the other Liberty’s in our new Centre where magic can indeed happen and dreams can come true. In the coming months you’ll be hearing a lot about our new Centre and all the wonderful programming we will offer. We hope we can count on your support. Together we can build a brighter future for our children

ARTHUR LAURENTS (Book, Director). His first play, Home of the Brave, opened on Broadway in 1945, followed by many others. His newest plays are A Key Change and Come Back, Come Back, Wherever You Are, starring Shirley Knight and Alison Fraser. These came right on the heels of his New Year’s Eve starring Marlo Thomas and Keith Carradine at his favorite theatre, the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick. He wrote his first musical, West Side Story, in 1957, followed by Gypsy and others. His first screenplay was The Snake Pit in 1948, followed by others including Rope, Anastasia, The Way We Were and The Turning Point. His own play, Invitation to a March in 1960, was the first of several he directed. I Can Get It for You Wholesale in 1961 was the first musical he directed, followed by others including La Cage aux Folles and Gypsy with Angela Lansbury, then Tyne Daly and most recently, Patti LuPone. In 2000, he wrote a memoir, Original Story By. His latest book, Mainly on Directing: West Side Story, Gypsy, and Other Musicals, was published in March 2009. His posthumous memoir The Rest of the Story is currently slated for publication in 2012. LEONARD BERNSTEIN (Music) (1918– 1990). Composer, conductor, author, teacher and recording artist, Bernstein transformed the way Americans and people everywhere hear and appreciate music. A few of his many compositions include the symphonies Jeremiah and The Age of Anxiety, the theatre piece Mass, Chichester Psalms, Divertimento, the film score for On the Waterfront, the ballets Fancy Free and Facsimile and the operas Trouble in Tahiti and A Quiet Place. He was music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1958 to 1969 and, over his lifetime, conducted many of the major orchestras of the world. His Broadway musicals include Wonderful Town, Candide, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and the immensely popular West Side Story. Who’s Who in the Cast George, Into the Woods, Assassins, Passion and Road Show as well as lyrics for West Side Story, Gypsy, Do I Hear a Waltz? and additional lyrics for Candide. Side by Side by Sondheim, Marry Me a Little, You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow, Putting It Together and Sondheim on Sondheim are anthologies of his work as composer and lyricist. For films, he composed the score of Stavisky, background music for Reds and songs for Dick Tracy and the television production “Evening Primrose.” He co-authored the film The Last of Sheila and the play Getting Away With Murder. Mr. Sondheim is on the council of the Dramatists Guild, having served as its president from 1973 to 1981. JEROME ROBBINS (Choreography) is world renowned for his work as a choreographer of ballets as well as his work as a director and choreographer in theatre, movies and television. His Broadway shows include On the Town, Billion Dollar Baby, High Button Shoes, West Side Story, The King and I, Gypsy, Peter Pan, Miss Liberty, Call Me Madam and Fiddler on the Roof. His last Broadway production in 1989, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, won six Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director. Among the more than 60 ballets he created are Fancy Free; Afternoon of a Faun; The Concert; Dances at a Gathering; In the Night; In G Major; Other Dances; Glass Pieces; and Ives, Songs, which are in the repertories of New York City Ballet and other major dance companies throughout the world. His last ballets include A Suite of Dances created for Mikhail Baryshnikov (1994), 2 & 3 Part Inventions (1994), West Side Story Suite (1995) and Brandenburg (1996). In addition to two Academy Awards for the film West Side Story, Mr. Robbins received four Tony Awards, five Donaldson Awards, two Emmy Awards, the Screen Directors Guild Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. He was a 1981 Kennedy Center Honors recipient and was awarded the French Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur. Mr. Robbins died in 1998. DAVID SAINT (Director) is the Artistic Director of The George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where in
the past fifteen years he has directed over 25 mainstage productions, including seven premieres byArthur Laurents, most recently New Year’s Eve starring Marlo Thomas and Keith Carradine. Notable productions under his tenure include the Richard Rodgers Award-winning The Spitfire Grill, Outer Critics Circle Award-winning The Toxic Avenger, Anne Meara’s Down the Garden Paths with Eli Wallach, Creating Claire by Tony winner Joe DiPietro and the Next Stage Festival where shows like Proof originated. He has directed on- and off-Broadway and around the country working with such artists as Jonathan Larson, A.R. Gurney, Jack Klugman, Holly Hunter, Bea Arthur, Aaron Sorkin, Sandy Duncan and Paul Rudd and at such theatres as Manhattan Theatre Club, Playwrights Horizons and Seattle Rep. Awards: Alan Schneider Award, Helen Hayes Award, L.A. Drama Critics Award and several DramaLogue Awards. Mr. Saint is the Executor of the Arthur Laurents Estate. JOEY McKNEELY (Reproduction Choreographer) first was introduced to West Side Story by Mr. Robbins himself when he danced in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway. He has directed and choreographed West Side Story throughout the world, including La Salla Opera in Milan, the Chatelet in Paris and the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London (Olivier nom., Best Musical Revival). On Broadway, Joey’s choreographic debut was Smokey Joe’s Cafe, followed by The Life, Twelfth Night at Lincoln Center, The Wild Party, The Boy From Oz starring Hugh Jackman and the recent revival of West Side Story. He has earned two Tony Award nominations, two Outer Critics Circle nominations, an NAACP Image Award and an L.A. Ovation Award. MICHAEL J. ORSINO (Chief Operating Officer) has enjoyed nearly a decade working with Troika Entertainment. He first joined the company on the road as stage manager and later as company manager. Productions include South Pacific, Saturday Night Fever, The Sound of Music (US and Asian tours) and Cats. A graduate of DeSales University, Mr. Orsino has also worked at venues ranging from the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA. After his many years on the road, he is pleased to have settled down in Maryland with his wife, Anissa, a fellow Troika tour veteran and their son, Cameron. DONALD KINDL (Chief Financial Officer) graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1982 and again in 1988 with his Masters in Business Administration. He began his career with Combustion Engineering in Windsor, CT, in 1982, and moved to Maryland in 1992 to assume the position of Comptroller for various theatrical productions. In his current position he oversees the daily operations of all aspects of finance and management information systems. Mr. Kindl and his lovely wife, Cindy, are the proud parents of three wonderful children: Stephen, Stacey and Scott. TOWNSEND TEAGUE (General Manager) is manager for national touring productions of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, Ghost, West Side Story and Bring It On.
