A NATURAL ROLE MODEL AMONG TASMANIAN MERINO FARMERS WILL BENNETT’s family have been living at Ashby farm in Tasmania for 166 years. They manage their 2,800-hectare land sustainably and care for their approx. 20,000 merino sheep without using procedures such as mulesing. Will is a role model among merino farmers and is one of our most important suppliers.

What do you do if you have weeks of leave left over? You just start hiking – and keep on going. MARLIES CZERNY found her inner voice on the mountains and climbed all 82 four-thousand-meter peaks of the Alps more or less by chance. “My fi st step on the mountain was the fi st to finding yself.”

SAFETY EXPERT THROUGH GUT FEELING DANI HORNSTEINER teaches practical fi st aid in alpine terrain. “There are two crucial pillars in an emergency rescue”, she says, “an internalized plan of procedure and reliance on your gut feeling. Those who listen to their inner voice will act in the correct manner.”

WILL, WHAT DOES YOUR INNER VOICE TELL YOU? Oh dear, an awful lot (laughs)! But in terms of life here at Ashby Farm, it tells me how important it is to look after our land, our animals, and the generations to come. Here in Tasmania we feel and witness climate change very noticeably and that makes us even more aware of our responsibility to act sustainably. UNFORTUNATELY, YOU’RE ONE OF THE FEW MERINO SHEEP FARMERS TO ABSTAIN FROM MULESING. Yes, and that for a good 10 years. I thought about it back then and did a lot of research, and ultimately decided to change things. I have no regrets whatsoever. Our sheep stay healthy without this painful treatment. I don’t want to force anybody to

change, but I do of course tell every farmer who asks that it’s obviously the better solution. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO SEE THE FINAL PRODUCT – THE RESULT OF YOUR WORK? I have always loved working on the farm. But to witness what becomes of our wool and who wears it is something else. That is actually the ultimate result for us and confirms our beliefs There are obviously many people out there whose inner voice speak the same language as ours.

Animal protection is extremely important and we naturally (in every sense of the word) consider it a duty of ours. For our OWP we have defined 64 points which gua antee that our sheep really thrive. One of the most important of these is refraining from practices like mulesing, which cause unnecessary pain and stress.

Wool is a natural fiber and the efore a holistic product. Soil, water, grass – our wool is a part of the natural cycle. Our farmers practice sustainable agriculture in order to provide the ideal conditions for both humans and animals, today and for generations to come.

We can follow the development of our products all the way back to their source: the sheep farms in Tasmania. Transparency and the monitoring of the complex delivery chain are a real challenge, but at the same time are a real labor of love. It is also important to us to introduce the people who are at the beginning of it all: our farmers – the producers of our clean wool.

WE ALL “ INSTINCTIVELY ACT CORRECTLY“ DANI, YOUR FIRST AID TRAINING COURSES TAKE PLACE IN ALPINE TERRAIN. WHAT MAKES YOUR COURSES SO SPECIAL? We of course teach fundamental fi st aid, but it is combined with the corresponding emergency management in natural surroundings – so in the specific e vironment in which mountaineers will find themse ves. This obviously poses greater challenges than in built-up areas. You are alone with the injured person for much longer, exposed to the weather and are against the clock. The courses are based upon two pillars. First, we lay down a foundation with a fi st-aid algorithm adapted to the conditions of alpine terrain. This is a common thread, a consistent pattern of action. Step 1: Take a deep breath and get an overview. Pause for 10 seconds – and plan for the next 10 minutes. Sort out your thoughts, assess the situation, and plan what your next steps will be. DANI HORNSTEINER is a specialist in alpine fi st aid, DAV instructor and head of operations at Bergwacht Bayern (Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service).

AND THIS PATTERN OF ACTION IS TO BE INTERNALIZED?! It definite y helps in getting a clear head for emergency management and for the actual injured person. You are no longer busy thinking: “What do I do next? Have I forgotten something?” The algorithm ensures safe and purposeful action, and helps you get up the courage to do something rather than being hesitant and doing nothing.

AS IT’S AN EXCEPTIONAL SITUATION, THINGS CAN GO WRONG, RIGHT? This is exactly the myth I try to dispel. That would be the second pillar: Trust your inner voice! You will instinctively act correctly if you listen and observe. It’s intrinsic to us humans to do the right thing. If somebody is cold, I try to warm them. If somebody is scared, I’ll be there for them and calm them down. If somebody is in pain, I’ll encourage them or distract them – these are all natural human reactions. Even if you don’t have anything else with you, you always have your heart and your body. With those you can keep them warm and mentally support them by means of empathy – these two things are the magic tools in an emergency so that the injured person will feel at ease and well cared for. This will automatically make them feel better.

At 38 and 40 liters, they provide sufficien space for high alpine tours lasting several days without compromising comfort. Once more, what makes these lightweight alpine tour backpacks so special is the SWISSWOOL-TEC-KNIT BACK SYSTEM: Â In an intricate process we combine foam and pressed swiss wool that is sheathed in a high-tech knitted fabric with varying hole structure. The lightweight back system impresses with breathable contact pads that ensure permanent CIRCULATION OF AIR and EXCELLENT WEAR COMFORT. ERGONOMICALLY DESIGNED SHOULDER STRAPS and a WIDE HIP BELT distribute weight evenly. Clever little features such as hydration system compatibility, ski fastening options, a hip pocket and a rain cover all come as standard on all TRAVERSE backpacks. Elasticated side pockets and a slide-in pocket on the front are perfect for quickly storing away small items. The TRAVERSE 30 can be opened up completely using the circumferential front zipper, providing a good overview of the equipment inside. SWISSWOOL-TEC-KNIT BACK SYSTEM In the SWISSWOOL-TEC-KNIT BACK SYSTEM, we combine foam and pressed Swiss wool covered with KGa HIGH-TECH KNITTED FABRIC with a diffe ent hole structure. In areas with lots of back contact, we have used SWISSWOOL® PADS with a larger hole structure. That means that the wool can absorb moisture (sweat) much faster, and is simultaneously MORE BREATHABLE and FEELS DRY on your back – even during sweat-inducing climbs. We have placed foam in areas with less back contact to offer more STABILITY and better WEAR COMFORT.

SWISSWOOL-FULL-CONTACT BACK SYSTEM The Swisswool backs on our HIGH ALPINE SERIES backpacks are made of pressed WOOL FLEECE with a punchhole covering. Thanks to the wool, the backpack can ABSORB MUCH MORE MOISTURE FROM THE BACK and at the same time is MORE BREATHABLE than conventional backpacks that are made using foam material, for example. A further advantage of wool is that the surface of the back system dries faster. The FULL CONTACT BACK fits close y to the body and offe s optimum weight distribution. The back design consists of three aluminum struts that offer HIGH STABILITY and guarantee GREAT COMFORT, even when the backpack is heavily loaded.

POLYESTER 300D 2TONE RIPSTOP The two-tone polyester fabric is characterized by its extremely light weight. The material is also EXCEPTIONALLY DURABLE and longlasting, making it ideal for the Traverse series. The Polyester 300D 2Tone Ripstop is also waterproof thanks to a PU coating on the inside.

NYLON 70D RIPSTOP The nylon fabric is characterized by its extremely light weight. It is the LIGHTEST MATERIAL that we use for our backpacks. The PU coating on the inside also makes the material waterproof.

Thanks to its 3D shape, the backpack fits close y to the back and guaranties GREAT FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT and the best possible wear comfort.

”ON THE MOUNTAIN, I COULD HEAR MY VOICE FOR THE FIRST TIME“ MARLIES, HOW DID YOU END UP CLIMBING 82 FOUR-THOUSANDERS BY CHANCE? The ‘accident’ arose from my remaining weeks of leave that I was obliged to take. Until then, I was a workaholic and didn’t really know what to do with myself. I then just put on my sneakers and set off in my Upper Austrian home region. I was never really interested in mountains before that. WHAT DROVE YOU TO DO IT? If only I knew... it definite y wasn’t my reasoning. I would probably call it intuition. It was without doubt the most important step in my life. My fi st step out into nature brought me a step closer to myself. To just be away from all external influences – I could actua ly hear myself for the very fi st time. HOW LONG DID THE ASCENTS TAKE YOU? Six years in total. I have to say though, that I didn’t in any way whatsoever intend to do it. It all started with those days off After climbing my local mountains I felt a need to go higher and higher and, in 2011,I stood on the summit of the beautiful Dom at 4,545 meters high. Around four years later I was sat with my partner and co-climber Andi, and we were reading a book about the four-thousand-meter peaks. Andi asked how many I had already been to the top of. I had never kept a log book. For me it was always just about being outdoors. I flic ed through the guide, checking them off I had done 62. Then I thought to myself: “Now you can do the remaining 20, too.”

CAN YOU DEFINE THIS PASSION? Every day I was just replying to emails every minute and typing like a madman. I was constantly on call and anxious. At the top of a mountain, I was free of all that. The more difficult and ch lenging it becomes, the more I exist in the “here and now”. Reducing things to the bare essentials has a wonderfully liberating effect on me ARE YOU A MINIMALIST WHEN IT COMES TO EQUIPMENT, TOO? Yes, simply because you can go further with less. You don’t need much in the mountains as long as you have the right things. Versatility, low weight and protection – once you have found the optimum set-up, everything falls into place. That’s why well-designed items are so important to me: things that function in the most diverse areas from the valley to the summit, and that can be used fl xibly. Clothing does not just have to work in the sunshine, but also during a snowstorm – and if it looks great at the same time, even better...

YOU WERE A SUCCESSFUL JOURNALIST BUT QUIT YOUR JOB. HOW COME? It just became harder and harder for me to find enough motivation. I had found myself and you can only really wish that for everyone. The hardest part is to discover your passion for something – and the further steps needed to allow the change to happen. The fact that I managed that was more rewarding than climbing all four-thousanders. It is a great blessing.

The massive, bizarre towers of the Pala group protrude from the stony alpine plateau. Climbing here in the southernmost mountain range of the Dolomites takes strong nerves – and strong material. Our MERINO SHIELD TEC line was designed especially for such long, alpine routes. As in PALA PANTS, we use extremely SCUFF-RESISTANT MATERIAL in our PALA JACKET. In the Martindale test used to test scuff esistance, the primary material was able to withstand over 50,000 abrasion cycles.
