EWOOLUTION MEANS FOR US THE PURSUIT OF PERFECTION

The SEARCH FOR INNOVATIVE IDEAS determines all areas of our business; whether in mountainwear, backpacks, emergency equipment or directly on the mountain. Take the next step with us and accompany us again this winter into the world of ORTOVOX. Green meadows, white mountaintops and our sheep on the alpine pastures in wild nature. Welcome to SWITZERLAND’S NATURAL PARADISE, where the wool for our Swisswool products originates. Briefly spin the globe and travel halfway around the world, where we find another NATURAL PARADISE: TASMANIA. Our merino sheep feed themselves on lush pastures in the untouched and unimaginably vast nature. That is the DNA that is in our ORTOVOX Mountainwear collection. For the upcoming winter we present to you THE MOST ATHLETIC SHEEP ON THE MOUNTAIN and unite the best qualities from our two wool worlds. We will also reveal to you how merino wool can be made even more functional. ORTOVOX stands for training and products for MAXIMUM PROTECTION ON THE MOUNTAINS. Therefore: meet SAM 3D! Get to know the new instructors of our SAFETY ACADEMY. The SAFETY ACADEMY MOUNTAIN 3D bridges the gap between tour theory and practice. Accompanied by our BRAND NEW ALLMOUNTAIN BACKPACKS, nothing else stands in the way of your mountain adventure. One thing you shouldn’t forget: the greatest feat with mountaineering, and in life, is to be PASSIONATE about it. ORTOVOX is, therefore, absolutely THE RIGHT CHOICE. YOUR ORTOVOX TEAM

MOUNTAINWEAR At ORTOVOX, we’ve been putting our trust in WOOL SINCE 1988. That is more than a quarter of a century of experience in working with the most functional of all natural fibers. From the first layer right through to the third, we take a holistic approach and do NOT PRODUCE ANY GARMENTS WITHOUT USING SHEEP’S WOOL. Our expertise lies in the intelligent combination of this natural material with other innovative fabrics. With the resulting easy-wear system, we provide you with unique functionality and high wear comfort for all your mountain adventures. We discovered MERINO WOOL IN 1995, both for ourselves and for all mountaineers. Our wool comes from the natural paradise of Tasmania. We have counted on wool from the Swiss Alps for our unique Swisswool products for several years, collecting it directly from the source. Here, like everywhere else in the world, we exclusively cooperate with partners who share our ethics, values and sense of social responsibility. ANIMAL WELFARE and FAIR WORKING CONDITIONS are more important to us than raw commercialism.

THE WOOL LAYERING SYSTEM PROTECTION, COMFORT, FUNCTION AND WOOL IN EVERY LAYER.

3RD LAYER

2ND LAYER

1ST LAYER

The outer layer of clothing PROTECTS YOU FROM THE ELEMENTS. Rain, snow, and stormy weather stay outside while you enjoy the optimal personal climate inside.

A merino midlayer ADDS A GREAT DEAL OF FUNCTIONALITY and freedom of movement. The second layer offers maximum breathability and high insulation.

This merino base layer keeps you warm and dry in the most natural way. The fine merino fibers TRANSPORT MOISTURE into the fiber core and slowly release it. This keeps the skin dry and perfectly regulates BODY TEMPERATURE.

HABITAT: The “white alpine sheep” that provide our Swisswool are at home high in the Swiss Alps. LIFESTYLE: In summer, the sheep are always outside. In winter, they live in the sheep shed with access to an open-air area. There are also winter migrating herds that live outside during the cold season. CAREER: Wool providers for our Swisswool products. With a fiber diameter of 28 to 30 microns, this high-quality wool is the perfect natural insulation material. EATING HABITS: Fresh grass in summer, hay and concentrates in winter. The sheep prefer short grass – it contains more nutrients.

WB_2015-16_03-109_DE.indb 14

FRIENDS: Sheep are herd animals and don’t like being alone. The ewes live in herds, separated from the rams. HAIRSTYLE: The sheep are shorn twice a year – in autumn and in spring. If they weren’t shorn, the sheep could not survive for long. SPECIAL TALENTS: The white alpine sheep is a talented mountaineer and a practiced climber. Urs is one of thousands of wool providers that spend their summers on different mountain pastures in Switzerland. Urs’ wool is the perfect insulation material for our SWISSWOOL products.

15

G’DAY COOPER HABITAT: The Merino sheep that provide us with our fine wool live in Tasmania.

HAIR STYLE: Long-haired. The sheep are only shorn once a year.

LIFESTYLE: Our four-legged friends spend the whole year outside and enjoy a very balanced climate in the cleanest air in the world.

SPECIAL TALENTS: The Merino sheep’s wool grows in fibers that are so fine that they don’t irritate your skin at all.

CAREER: Wool providers for our Merino products. With a fiber diameter of 18 microns, this high-quality wool is perfect for our Merino clothing. EATING HABITS: Green and fresh. Juicy grasses line the lush, almost boundless pastures in Tasmania. RS

Cooper lives on the east coast of Tasmania, one of the cleanest spots on earth. At ORTOVOX we use his wool for pure Merino products that can be worn directly on the skin.

FRIENDS: Sheep are herd animals and don’t like being alone. Tasmanian Merino sheep have many friends and live in herds with up to 20,000 of their fellow species.

MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL 3L [MI] JACKET A new level of comfort! MERINO GUARDIANSHELL bears the signature of ORTOVOX freerider Chris Ebenbichler. For Chris, SAFETY and COMFORT are closely related. With this in mind, we created the FIRST FULL-COVERAGE MERINO THREE-LAYER SET IN THE WORLD. The layer against the body is made of pure Merino wool that has been laminated to the TORAY® DERMIZAX EV membrane as well as to the outer fabric. Merino wool not only increases wearing comfort, but also improves FUNCTIONALITY. It has the ability to store large volumes of moisture without causing the wearer to feel wet. Conventional three-layer materials quickly reach their limits during periods of heavy perspiration, causing discomfort. But Merino wool buffers moisture and passes it uniformly through the membrane to the outside environment. This eliminates the danger of rapid cooling during a chairlift ride after a strenuous POWDER SESSION. MERINO GUARDIANSHELL OPTIMIZES COMFORT throughout the day!

SUMMIT MEETING OF SWISSWOOL MANY FACES - ONE STORY

PHOTOS Hansi Heckmair

PASSION is what makes our Swisswool collection special. EVERY SINGLE PERSON behind the project works with total commitment, so that wool from the Swiss Alps is properly utilized and is appreciated once again. The precious raw material, collected locally, is the ideal insulation material for HIGH-QUALITY MOUNTAIN SPORT PRODUCTS.

NOT MASS-PRODUCED SHEEP FARMER JON RONER, SCOUL, CH Jon has devoted himself to sheep breeding and agriculture since 1987. His farm provides for various organic food labels and puts great emphasis on sustainability, showing respect for nature, animals and humans. He was convinced by the Swisswool concept. THERE’S AN INTERVIEW WITH JON ON THE FOLLOWING PAGES.

PASSION FOR OUTDOORS SHEPERD STEFAN PLATZER, ALP PLAZÈR, S-CHARL, CH For Stefan only one thing matters: being outdoors. He best enjoys nature in all its beauty in his place of work, 2182 meters above sea level. Together with his sheepdogs he makes sure that our Swisswool “suppliers” enjoy a safe and secure summer.

PRESERVE TRADITIONS SWISSWOOL DIRECTOR MARTIN KELLER, BUCHS, CH Martin wasn’t prepared to accept that wool was suddenly worthless. In 2009 he began to collect Swiss wool directly from the source – from the farmers themselves. Currently, over 400 tons of wool are collected each year.

FUNCTION MEETS DESIGN HEAD OF MOUNTAINWEAR ORTOVOX, THOMAS MOE, TAUFKIRCHEN, D Thomas is an enthusiastic wool user and creative head chef in the ORTOVOX product kitchen. Thanks to his enthusiasm for the history of Swiss wool, he is able to create insulated clothing products that impress with their design, quality and functionality.

"THE PLACE YOU COME FROM AND WERE BORN IS ALWAYS UNIQUE.“ Since 1987 Jon Roner, from SCUOL IN ENGADIN in Switzerland, has been in sheep farming. He is one of the many Swisswool farmers, who, twice a year, hand over their wool to Swisswool collection stations. In addition to some cows and horses, Jon has 150 sheep, whose wool is used to make our jackets. Last summer, we visited Jon and his herd on his alpine pasture in the mountains.

JON, DO YOU ACTUALLY SPEND THE WHOLE SUMMER WITH YOUR SHEEP? No, unfortunately not. I am the “Alpmeister” (the head of the farmer’s cooperative). This means that I can’t always be with the sheep during the summer. Our shepherd Leonhard undertakes this for me. As “Alpmeister” I am his supervisor. I keep returning to the alpine pastures so that we can talk and I can help him when occasional problems arise. Otherwise during the summer I’m mostly kept busy with the haymaking. The whole summer is actually about gathering food for the animals for the winter. SWISS SHEEP ARE SHORN TWICE A YEAR. HOW COME? We shear the sheep so that they thrive. In the winter in Switzerland the sheep are kept in a barn, admittedly partly in an open barn, but nevertheless they have a limited space. We shear the sheep in the fall to ensure that they have a more comfortable time in the barn during the winter. In the spring the sheep have to be shorn because otherwise their coats would simply be too long for summer on the alpine pastures. The fall wool, which we get after their time on the alpine pastures, is the nicer wool because the sheep have spent the whole summer in the fresh air. WHY IS THE FALL WOOL NICER? Apart from the excellent grass, which is available for the sheep to eat across the whole of the Alps, I think

the climate and the Alpine environment affect the wool – the sheep are exposed to sub-zero temperatures during the night and then during the day it can get quite hot. The conditions are therefore very different. As a result the wool is so special. FOR A LONG TIME NOBODY WANTED TO BUY SWISS WOOL. WHEN WE HEARD THIS, WE COULD HARDLY BELIEVE IT. Yes, that’s true. Back then a central body called “Wollzentrale” bought the wool. But eventually the state no longer part-financed this and nobody wanted to buy the wool. For a long while we didn’t really know what to do with the wool anymore. It was a real shame. Today we throw away some foodstuffs, and that’s what we also had to do with the wool. Some people also incinerated it. But wool, just like other materials, is very valuable. We were therefore forced to look for other options. Now we are glad that we are able to give the wool to Swisswool and finally garments can be made using it. HOW DID YOU COME TO HEAR OF SWISSWOOL AND HOW DOES HANDING IN THE WOOL WORK? Martin Keller, the chief of Swisswool, also has an alpine pasture in this area and thanks to publications in farming magazines we heard about the collection dates in Scuol and the concept. There was also an invitation to the wool collection point. When the wool is collected, we go there, the wool is weighed, you state which type of wool it is and also which color. Then you get paid per kilo of wool. The wool is then tied into bales and so made ready for further transportation.

SWISSWOOL (SW) JACKET PIZ BERNINA Uncompromising sustainability! We have insulated the new generation of our SWISSWOOL jackets with a homogenous layer of FAIR-TRADE SWISS Virgin wool (150 G/M2), making them IDEAL FOR ALPINE USE. At the same time, we reduced packing dimensions and improved the outer layer of nylon. These products are completely WINDPROOF and WATER RESISTANT.

CIAO, TAUFKIRCHEN! In the Spring of 2014 we set off for Italy together. Not only were we rigorously testing our products but also updating our knowledge in terms of rescuing companions. Our upmost priority: to experience together, what we work for everyday – a SAFE, MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE that’s unforgettable, thanks to FRIENDSHIP AND PASSION. OUR DESTINATION: LIVIGNO, a still relatively untouched FREE-RIDING MECCA, which is just under 5 hours’ drive from Munich (or 10 hours when you realize, shortly before the tunnel, that the tour bus won’t fit through).

ITALY

ORTOVOX is a partner of FREERIDE LIVIGNO! Freeriders literally have a free run in Livigno. Off-piste skiing nearly everywhere else in Italy is, for safety reasons, legally prohibited. This is not the case for the small spot in northern Lombardy: instead Livigno actively invests in various preventative measures to avoid avalanche accidents and, in the process, has found a strong partner in ORTOVOX. More about the free-riding Mecca: LIVIGNO.EU

ONCE SAFE, PER FAVORE! ORTOVOX stands for protection on the mountain. Thoughts of safety are always present, even in our free time. This also includes putting theoretical knowledge into practice. In other words: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. We didn’t need a trip to Livigno to realize that avalanche theory is no dry subject and actually has its charms, particularly in the mountains. The FUN that we ultimately had with the AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVER TRAINING was well worth the trip.

AMICI, LET´S GO, DESCENT! After the climb comes the descent – for us the absolute HIGHLIGHT of every snow excursion: making curves through the UNTOUCHED POWDER. Nothing dampened a good mood even when the ride down MONTE DELLA NEVE, was no longer completely untouched after 30 colleagues had already made their way down. ORTOVOX team: THANK YOU FOR THIS WONDERFUL WEEKEND!

NUYARN MERINO WOOL - EVEN BETTER

WE COMBINE THE INTELLIGENCE OF NATURE WITH THE INTELLIGENCE OF MAN. MERINO WOOL MEETS NYLON. For hundreds of years we humans have been in the process of continuous improvement. Work processes are being optimized, technological developments are being utilized more and more extensively, and the materials we work with are likewise being optimally adapted to their relevant uses.

PHOTO Edgar Neves

For centuries the most functional fiber from nature, merino wool, has been impressing with its functionality. Mountaineers in particular profit from its various positive qualities. Merino wool is odor neutral, moisture regulating, very soft, easy to care for and grows back every year.

57

NUYARN STRUCTURE The HIGH-END YARN STRUCTURE of Nuyarn improves the performance and function of the wool.

WOOL

Nylon forms the core of Nuyarn. The synthetic polyamide fiber is particularly tear-resistant, elastic and light. Merino wool is wrapped around the nylon center, creating a yarn composition that combines all of the positive features of synthetic fibers and merino wool. Nuyarn – IMPROVES THE FUNCTIONALITY of merino wool. Your time on the mountain will be an experience to remember thanks to the improved performance of our Nuyarn merino clothing.

NYLON

DRIES 5x FASTER

39 % MORE VOLUME

The secret of Nuyarn is the completely new and unique spinning process. Thanks to the spinning process, the yarn is lighter, more elastic and durable, dries more quickly and retains all of the positive characteristics of merino wool. Nuyarn can be found in our 105 MERINO ULTRA and 260 MERINO NET lines.

MORE VOLUME WITH LESS WEIGHT. Because Nuyarn doesn’t have a yarn twist it feels even softer on the skin. Although it’s thinner, Nuyarn is better at retaining heat.

MORE STRETCH AND A MORE STABLE STRUCTURE. Thanks to the structure of the yarn, Nuyarn forms more easily to the body and is more elastic than conventional merino wool.

STRONGER AND LESS PILLING. Nuyarn has a higher resistance to tearing and abrasion. So it’s the perfect choice for mountaineering, where the material has to be very durable.

DRIES 5X FASTER. Because of the volume of fibers in Nuyarn, water is more quickly absorbed and at the same time moisture is more quickly wicked away.

MERINO WOOL NEUTRALIZES ODORS. As wool makes up a large part of the Nuyarn yarn, this characteristic is completely preserved in the new material.

260 MERINO ULTRA NET HOODY We work with nature’s most functional fibers and make them even better. A NYLON THREAD IN THE INTERIOR of the yarn allows us to take merino wool to an even higher level of performance. Through this INNOVATIVE MANUFACTURING PROCESS, the wool becomes MORE COMFORTABLE, ELASTIC, DURABLE and DRIES MORE QUICKLY. With the ULTRA 260 NET, we have combined a finely-woven outer shell with a LARGE-MESH WOOL NETTING INNER, thereby creating a completely new microclimate and wear comfort. The woven wool netting creates air chambers that store A LOT OF WARMTH, although the MERINO ULTRA 260 NET is light and thin. Thanks to its TWO-LAYER CONSTRUCTION, the first and the second layers are combined to make a single product. • NUYARN – IMPROVES MERINO WOOL FUNCTIONALITY* • LIGHT: 39 % loftier at less weight • STRETCHY: 35 % stretchier • ST RONG: 16 % stronger with less abrasion • DRY: 5 x faster drying

185 MERINO PRINT SHORT SLEEVE Our ALL-SEASON LINE is made of 100 % PURE TASMANIAN MERINO WOOL with a weight of 185 g/m2 and an average fineness of 18 microns. It’s hard to say if the outstanding quality of the WOOL COMES FROM THE UNIQUE PARADISE-LIKE Tasmanian nature, a near-unlimited living space and natural food sources, or from the 180-year-old merino tradition of sustainability. Probably all of these factors contribute to making our wool so incomparably functional and comfortable. • FINE 18-MICRON FIBER DIAMETER • 100 % PURE MERINO WOOL, 185 g/m2 • MADE WITH RENEWABLE RAW MATERIALS; our sheep shed once or twice a year

Nuyarn is the MOST EXCLUSIVE YARN in our range. In an INNOVATIVE MANUFACTURING PROCESS THE FINEST WOOL FIBERS ARE SPUN AROUND A NYLON CORE. The resulting yarn allows us to create fabrics that are LIGHTER but at the same time MORE VOLUMINOUS. The result is more warmth and comfort. In addition, the core improves many wool properties: the yarn becomes MORE ELASTIC, STABLE, LESS SUSCEPTIBLE TO PILLING and DRIES 5 X FASTER than conventional merino yarn. In short: the best merino yarn of all time! • NUYARN – IMPROVES MERINO WOOL FUNCTIONALITY* • LIGHT: 39 % loftier at less weight • STRETCHY: 35 % stretchier • STRONG: 16 % stronger with less abrasion • DRY: 5 x faster drying

TASMANIA FAR, FAR AWAY, IN A LAND OF TASMANIAN DEVILS AND MERINO SHEEP! Those who wear fine ORTOVOX Merino underwear feel: nothing! The wool that the Tasmanian Merino sheep provide is particularly high-quality and made of fibers so fine that they don’t scratch. Why is the fineness of this wool so different to European wool? Because the sheep in TASMANIA HAVE A UNIQUE HABITAT TO CALL HOME. The pristine island south of Australia offers the best air in the world and is mainly one thing: GREEN. It’s not enough for us to know that the wool comes from Tasmanian Merino sheep. So our marketing associate Dominik Haas PAID A VISIT to our fourlegged providers and their owners, TOOK A CLOSER LOOK and peeked behind the wool! We source our fine fibers from four farms we completely trust. They treat the sheep so well that we can wear, produce and sell their wool WITH A CLEAR CONSCIENCE.

FACTS ABOUT ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND CLEANEST PLACES ON THE PLANET: LOCATION: In the Indian Ocean, roughly 240 kilometers south of the Australian mainland.

AUSTRALIA

FLORA: Green and pristine Forests similar to rain forests, button grass, moor landscapes and eucalyptus and acacia forests can all be found on the island. FAUNA: Welcome to the land of marsupials. Wombats, different types of kangaroo and the famous Tasmanian devil all call Tasmania their home. AREA: 68,400 km² – the same size as Ireland CAPITAL CITY: Hobart POPULATION: 500,000 people 3 million Merino sheep HIGHEST MOUNTAIN: Mount Ossa (1,617 meters)

INTERVIEW - GALA FARM ONE OF THE FARMS THAT PRODUCES OUR PRECIOUS MERINO WOOL IS GALA FARM. THE GREENHILL FAMILY HAVE LIVED WITH THEIR MERINOS IN THE EAST OF TASMANIA FOR SIX GENERATIONS. WHAT IS IT LIKE LIVING WITH ALMOST 10,000 SNUGGLY, FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS? WE ASKED ADAM GREENHILL. WHAT DOES ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS MEAN FOR YOU AS A FARMER? At Gala Farm we are in the lucky position of having varied land that allows for a huge diversity of species and therefore a balanced ecosystem. We have 1000 hectares of original bush land, four wild rivers and five private forest reserves. Most grasses on our pastures are natural varieties and we deliberately leave a large part of our area unused so that we have an emergency reserve for droughts. I would say that a huge proportion of our grassland is actually a very sensitive area and we do our best to ensure it is sustainably farmed. WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU? The best thing about a mixed farm is that no two days are the same. The time spent with the sheep lets me breathe the fresh air and soak up the beauty of nature. There’s nothing better than working outside with the sheep dogs on a spring day. At least for as long as the dogs do as they’re told. The next day I could be picking grapes, harvesting poppies or selling wine to restaurants. WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT YOUR REGION? Tasmania is a very isolated island, so the region is very clean. I would say that the wild coasts and the beaches are what make Tasmania unique. I often go camping with my family on immaculate beaches, where we are normally completely alone. Unique to our farm are the four rivers that vitalize the land. They flow from the forest reservations through the deepest gorges and the water is so clear that you can see trout three feet down. We often travel out to the pools formed by the river, take a picnic and spend beautiful days there. HOW MANY DIFFERENT HERDS DO YOU HAVE HERE? The number of herds and how they are mixed changes constantly. We carry out regular pregnancy tests on the breeding animals and separate them into not-pregnant, pregnant, and animals that are expecting several lambs, so that we can give them the correct amounts of food. Before the lambing we separate them into as many enclosures as possible, to reduce the possibility of lambs losing their mothers, as often happens. At the moment our ewes

WB_2015-16_03-109_DE.indb 69

are spread across 59 different enclosures. My father, Bob, stops by these enclosures every day to help with the lambing, although he rarely gets close because he doesn´t want to stress the animals. IS IT POSSIBLE TO KEEP TRACK OF ALL SHEEP? In times of drought we use our land as a feeding reserve, where the rivers serve as boundaries for keeping the sheep in. We have had sheep that have sneaked off and re-surfaced in a different area, 60 kilometers away. Some sheep weren’t found until three years later, with 35cm-long coats and looking more like marshmallows. DO YOU KNOW ALL OF THE SHEEP BY NAME? I would like to say yes, but with 6,000 - 11,000 sheep and my memory for names, it´s difficult. My daughter is nursing orphaned sheep in our garden, but from those 12 animals I can only remember Pinky, Lamb chop, Fatso, Greedy and Cutlet.

MATERIALS GLOSSARY

SWISSWOOL

MERINO PUNCHHOLE

Our Insulation line contains Swiss wool. This is the finest virgin wool with Swiss origins from the canton of Wallis. Swisswool places particular value on sustainable production and regional origin. Long transport routes are avoided whenever possible. Virgin wool is extremely lightweight and has excellent insulation properties. Numerous air pockets are created around the virgin wool, which can store large volumes of heat. If you pack the clothing items together, the air escapes and the products can be compressed to extremely small sizes.

Protection meets breathability! Merino Punchhole has a sandwich design: on the outside we use a blend of polyamide and lycra that facilitates moisture management through its hole structure. Underneath the wind and waterproof membrane there is a layer of 100 % merino wool that provides comfort and the familiar merino functionality. Quality made in Switzerland! MATERIAL MERINO PUNCHHOLE 90 % Polyamide + 10 % Elastane, Punchhole backing: 100 % Virgin wool (MERINO)

MATERIAL SWISSWOOL LINING MOUNTAINWEAR: 88 % Virgin wool + 12 % Polylactide (corn-based), LINING GLOVES: 86 % Virgin wool + 14 % Polylactide (corn-based)

MERINO NATURETEC + NATURETEC LIGHT

DERMIZAX® NX

In our MERINO NATURETEC lines, we do without a membrane completely. The fine merino fibers are interwoven with the Naturetec material from the Swiss manufacturer schoeller®. The advantage: The material is extremely breathable and still provides protection against wind, light precipitation and dirt. The surface has a microstructure that causes water and even dirt particles to lastingly roll off. The combination of merino wool and durable polyamide is extremely robust and elastic – making it ideal for high-action sports. The merino wool on the skin ensures good wear comfort and ideal microclimate management in any type of weather and at any temperature.

In our new MERINO HARDSHELL collection, we use the Toray Dermizax® NX membrane – the highest-performance membrane on the market today! Unlike conventional membranes, this Japanese-made membrane is smart. It functions best when warm. The structure is not made up of micropores but is closed.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURETEC AND NATURETEC LIGHT The two materials differ solely in terms of thickness, which also dictates their use (moderate/intense activities). The Light version weighs 175 g/m2, and the somewhat heavier standard version weighs in at 230 g/m2. However, the structures are identical. NATURETEC MATERIAL 74 % Polyamide + 20 % Virgin wool (MERINO) + 6 % Elastane NATURETEC LIGHT MATERIAL 75 % Polyamide + 18 % Virgin wool (MERINO) + 7 % Elastane

ADVANTAGES It is extremely breathable (up to 55,000 g/m2/24 h), windproof and completely waterproof (min. 20,000 mm H2O). Even with little care, maximum outward diffusion is guaranteed. Dermizax® NX is ideal for high-action sports – the membrane can be stretched by 200 % with no risk of delamination. Another feature that sets it apart from other membranes is ist environmentally friendly, PFC-less production. In the new MERINO HARDSHELL collection, we additionally use our MERINO MESH as a liner material – this creates a buffer effect that enhances the performance of the membrane (see “MERINO MESH”). MATERIAL MERINO HARDSHELL Shell: 100 % Polyamide (TORAY DERMIZAX® NX), Merino Mesh: 38 % Virgin wool (MERINO) + 62 % polyester

107

DERMIZAX EV

LENZING MODAL®

The EV membrane works according to the same principle as that of the Dermizax® NX membrane used in our MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL and glove collection.

Supersoft stands for a combination of the finest Merino wool and Lenzing Modal. Modal is used on the inside and is as soft as silk. Modal is a pure, natural fiber manufactured from beech wood cellulose. The fiber comes solely from wood from sustainably managed beech forests. Lenzing is the perfect companion to the functionality of Merino fiber – a scratch-free material meets the popular Merino properties. Ideally suited for highly sensitive skin!

The difference between the two Japanese membranes lies mainly in the breathability, which is slightly lower for the Dermizax® EV (up to 45,000 g/m2/24h). The values waterproofing (min. 20,000 mm H2O) and stretch are identical to those of the NX membrane. Another prominent advantage over other membranes is the environmentally friendly, PFC-less production.

MATERIAL MERINO SUPERSOFT 53 % virgin wool (MERINO) + 43 % Lenzing Modal® + 4 % polyamide

MATERIALS GLOSSARY

Our MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL is lined with merino wool laminated spotwise to the Toray membrane. Merino wool can absorb large quantities of moisture and then slowly release it back into the air. This buffer action supports the membrane, enables ideal management of temperature and moisture, and provides odor control. MATERIAL MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL SHELL: 100 % Polyamide (TORAY DERMIZAX® EV), INSIDE: 100 % Virgin wool (MERINO)

MERINOPREN PERTEX MICROLIGHT

MERINOPREN

We use Pertex Microlight as the outer material for all our SWISSWOOL LIGHT and SWISSWOOL LIGHT TEC products. It is light, very durable and scuff-resistant. The windproof material is also soft and comfortable.

We have combined the advantages of neoprene with those of merino wool. Neoprene is particularly elastic, soft and insulating. Due to its fine hole pattern it ensures excellent moisture management in combination with the merino wool below it. To provide even better insulation, the merino 240 is terry lined. The cavities between the fibers allow air to collect, which serves as a warming cushion and ensures excellent wear comfort.

MATERIAL PERTEX MICROLIGHT 100% Polyamide (Nylon)

MATERIAL MERINOPREN 50 % Polyamide + 50 % Virgin wool (MERINO)

TENCEL® We use TENCEL® for all products in the MERINO COOL range. This natural fiber is obtained from eucalyptus cellulose in a highly environmentally-friendly manner and free from pollutants. In addition to TENCEL®‘s COOLING properties, the fiber also inhibits bacterial growth and has an extremely smooth fiber surface. MATERIAL MERINO COMPETITION COOL 27 % Virgin wool (MERINO) + 27 % Lyocell (Tencel®) + 44 % Polyamide + 2 % Elastane

CLASSIC WOOL Our Classic Wool line is made of 100?% pure virgin wool. Virgin wool has the distinct advantage of trapping a great deal of air and thus providing warmth even when wet. Depending on the product, we use 2, 3 or 4 strands of yarns. More yarn strands mean more protection and more warmth.

108

MERINO-MESH MERINO MESH

MERINO ATHLETIC

The knit blend made of fine merino wool and polyester is used in diverse products – usually as a liner material. MERINO MESH feels good against the skin and contributes considerably to the unique merino microclimate. MERINO FIBERS buffer moisture and transport it to the surrounding air without feeling wet to the touch.

This material combination with maximum breathability is used in zones in products such as the MERINO NATURETEC LIGHT series, designed for highly demanding activities. The outside consists of a lightweight, extremely elastic blend of nylon and elastane. On the inside of this thin layer, pure merino wool has been knitted in. Merino wool has outstanding moisture-regulating properties, a neutral odor, and the unique merino microclimate.

MERINO MESH MATERIAL 30 % Virgin wool (MERINO) + 70 % Polyester

MERINO ATHLETIC MATERIAL 42.9 % Polyamide + 38.5 % Elastane + 18.6 % Virgin wool (MERINO)

MERINO FLEECE MERINO FLEECE (MI) / MERINO FLEECE PLUS (MI)

MERINO COMPETITION

Represents the ultimate in functionality. We combine the finest Merino wool with the polyester and elastane shell. We deliberately avoid using a membrane so as not to lay any obstacles in the way of breathability. The material is extremely stretchy and robust and impresses through ist sensational body temperature control due to the brushed Merino wool on the inside.

Our most sporty line is nearly seamless, using a circular knitting process. This process enables us to position different material thicknesses on different body areas. The base consists of 190 g/m2 Merino, a thin Merino mesh is applied to areas of heavy perspiration, 240 g Merino is used for particularly cold-sensitive areas and an elastic ribbed structure is used in areas that require great freedom of movement.

MATERIAL MERINO FLEECE 69 % polyester + 27 % virgin wool (MERINO) + 4 % elastane MATERIAL MERINO FLEECE PLUS 50 % polyester + 41 % virgin wool (MERINO) + 9 % elastane

MERINO COMPETITION 80 % virgin wool (MERINO) + 17 % Polyamide + 3 % Elastane

MERINO TEC-FLEECE NUYARN

MERINO TEC-FLEECE

The high-end yarn structure of Nuyarn improves the performance and function of the wool.

The mixed fabric with a high proportion of merino (63 %), as well as polyester (21 %), polyamide (16 %), has extremely good drying properties, is very breathable, and highly pilling resistant. During production, two layers of 160 g/m2 thickness are laminated together, producing what we know as TEC-FLEECE. The jackets offer light water resistance, extremely high breathability and a material composition that is excellent for wicking away excess moisture.

MATERIAL NUYARN 85 % Virgin wool (MERINO) + 15 % Polyamide

MATERIAL TEC-FLEECE (MI) 63 % Virgin wool (MERINO) + 21 % Polyester + 16 % Polyamide

Four years after the company‘s foundation in 1981 we developed our first BACKPACK MODEL. We realized 30 years ago that a backpack is an essential part of a full set of EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT (avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe). The models developed back then were still archaically called »DEEP SNOW BACKPACKS«, yet already followed the safety principle back in 1985 that still inspires us to this day in all product ranges. During over a quarter of a century‘s experience in designing backpacks, a number of INNOVATIONS can be attributed to us. Standard features like an integrated back protector, a SAFETY COMPARTMENT, which allows quick access to the emergency equipment, or access to the main compartment via the back system, were established by ORTOVOX. Today our backpacks stand for the highest QUALITY, innovative DETAILS, FUNCTIONALITY as well as unique DESIGN, based on a vast wealth of experience.

MATERIALS GLOSSARY BACKPACKS

O-FLEX

VENT-O-FLEX

The back system was developed in collaboration with physicians from the Rückenzentrum München (Munich Back Center). It evenly DISTRIBUTES THE LOAD between the shoulders and the hips, providing GREATER WEAR COMFORT and MUSCLE RELIEF.

The latest development of our successful O-FLEX FRAME. The thin X-ALU FRAME distributes weight evenly between the hips and shoulders and relieves the back. VENTILATION HOLES in the back interact with the lower and lateral flow channels to provide comfortable ventilation of the back, particularly during times of ACTIVE EXERTION.

SPS PRO2 This anatomically shaped protector is TÜV-CERTIFIED (according to strict motorcycle standard EN 1621-2, Level 1) and consists of flexible visco-elastic foam that retains ist good shock absorption properties even when the temperature drops. It is REMOVABLE AND CAN BE USED SEPARATELY with the included straps. At just 300 g in the largest size, it is truly lightweight. Ventilation holes ensure a good exchange of air. THREE DIFFERENT LENGTHS provide maximum protection: M (16 + 24 l) Back length 38-44 cm | Height 155-175 cm L (18 + 26 l) | Back length 42-49 cm | Height 170-195 cm S (22 l) | Back length 35-40 cm | Height 150-175 cm

NEOPREN Neoprene is a foamed elastomer, both sides of which are normally coated with Spandex in order to make the surface less susceptible to damage. Due to ist OUTSTANDING STRETCHABILITY, we use Neoprene in our FREE RIDER hip belts, ensuring a perfect fit every time. On our shoulder straps it protects the ABS grip or acts as INSULATION for the drinking tube.

SPANDEX

HYPALON

All of our back pads are covered with Spandex. Spandex is an elastic PU yarn known for ist robust yet soft surface, giving it a very high level of comfort. The surface structure is so fine that NOT EVEN SNOW WILL STICK TO IT – making it ideal for our winter backpacks!

We were one of the first companies to use hypalon in the construction of our backpacks. The material is now used anywhere that sharp, pointed items could damage a backpack. Hypalon is RESISTANT to cold and VIRTUALLY INDESTRUCTIBLE.

420 POLYESTER 630D HD

The distinctive ripstop interlocking thread pattern and a PU coating for GREATER WATER RESISTANCE result in HIGHER ABRASION PROTECTION and TEAR STRENGTH. From a visual perspective, the relief-like surface structure has a very technical appearance. It is a design that doesn’t compromise longevity.

An extremely tear-resistant and robust fabric. Polyurethane-treated for improved water resistance.

NYLON 420D VELOCITY

500D NYLON

Our standard fabric has a high web density with a focus on LONGEVITY and PROTECTION. The inside is PU coated, making the fabric WATERPROOF.

The MOST DURABLE and LONG-LASTING material that we use in backpack construction. With a matt look, the material is marked by its high resistance to abrasion and tearing. With an inner PU layer, it is also WATERPROOF.

NYLON 840D BALLISTIC

POLYESTER 450D HD

This strong yarn provides a great deal of abrasion protection and ensures longevity. This weave gives the fabric additional robustness and protects it from damage. The optimal material for our ABS backpacks, in areas, which are expected to endure large applications of force.

A very robust and versatile fabric with a high weave density. Despite being very light, the fabric is very durable and tear-resistant. The polyurethane makes it waterproof.

BASIC AVALANCHE KNOWLEDGE FOR BACKCOUNTRY SKIERS AND FREERIDERS With our emergency equipment, we are developing and manufacturing products that we hope you will NEVER HAVE TO USE. But: We continuously invest in the further development of our avalanche transceivers, avalanche airbags, probes and shovels to ensure our customers have the BEST POSSIBLE PROTECTION in an emergency situation.

On the next few pages you will discover what SAFETY ACADEMY is, how you can take part, and how you can get informed.

PHOTO Hansi Heckmair

The correct and practiced handling of the products is as important as the emergency equipment itself. In an emergency situation on a mountain, seconds can be

crucial – that’s why we offer tourers and freeriders not just equipment, but also IMPORTANT KNOWHOW: With SAFETY ACADEMY we provide you with the information you need to avoid avalanches, but also the most effective rescue plan if everything does indeed go wrong.

SAFETY STARTS AT HOME!

SAFETY ACADEMY LAB Last year the launch of our microsite SAFETY ACADEMY LAB caused a sensation, proving that communication can be serious but still sexy without having to follow the motto “higher, faster, further.” We raised the level of specialized knowledge communication concerning avalanches with numerous videos, pictures and interactive content. Our efforts were awarded the ISPO AWARD in the MULTI-CHANNEL field. Visit us at ortovox.com/safety-academy-lab

EMERGENCY SITUATIONS ON THE MOUNTAIN That was incentive enough to produce ANOTHER CHAPTER over the summer. In the fifth chapter, EMERGENCY SITUATIONS ON THE MOUNTAIN, we discuss topics that are only touched upon in normal avalanche courses. Knowledge about first-aid, constructing a rescue sled or building a snow cave will turn you into a mountain professional.

LEARNING TOOL

SAFETY ACADEMY MOUNTAIN 3D WE BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE! KURT WALDE, seasoned mountain guide and mountain guide trainer in South Tyrol, recognized the gap and, with loving attention to detail, developed a wooden model of the mountain that combined the most relevant mountain shapes. Information that is difficult to understand can be ILLUSTRATED EASILY on the SAFETY ACADEMY MOUNTAIN 3D – in particular on training courses for beginners. Together with Kurt, we developed a HANDBOOK that addresses complex questions which can be resolved by the participants or the trainer with the help of the mountain. We picked out a few basic questions that encapsulate the working principle of our SAFETY ACADEMY MOUNTAIN 3D. The SAFETY ACADEMY 3D MOUNTAIN was developed and implemented together with RISK PROTECT. RISK PROTECT draws on many years of experience in product development and manufacturing technology and is considered to be a think tank for mountaineering equipment and occupational safety.

THE WORLD’S FIRST EVER REMOVABLE AIRBAG SYSTEM

R

T

FOR MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY

WE MAKE PROVEN DESIGNS EVEN BETTER! Our new ORTOVOX Avalanche-backpacks utilize the ABS standards, which have been continuously developed since 1985. The TWINBAGS (two balloons with a total volume of 170L) provide additional volume and buoyancy and greatly reduce the probability of being buried in an avalanche. Inflate the airbag by triggering a reliable PYROTECHNIC-PNEUMATIC SYSTEM that fills the airbags in a matter of SECONDS. Advantages of ABS Twinbag technology: • VISIBILITY and FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT are unrestricted even when the airbags are open • The WIDE CONTACT SURFACE (horizontal position) provides dynamic buoyancy and prevents immobilization at the avalanche runout zone • The inflated bags are READILY VISIBLE ON THE AVALANCHE • After triggering, the system can be EASILY, QUICKLY, and SAFELY prepared for REUSE We combined these standards with what is probably the WORLD'S BEST FREERIDE AND TOURING BACKPACKS to create the MOST VERSATILE ABS BACKPACKS of all time. They exhibit the highest quality standards, flawless fit, maximum functionality, and the unique ability to adapt to ANY SITUATION the mountains may throw your way.

ZOOM+ IT COULDN‘T BE EASIER! The ZOOM+ combines the SIMPLEST HANDLING and the LATEST TECHNOLOGY with the MOST ADVANCED DESIGN. Reduced to two functional buttons, the ZOOM+ concentrates on intuitive usability. The focus on the clearly designed LED display is on the on / off switches and the switch between transmitting and searching. Distances, directional arrows and information about multiple avalanche victims guide you in the FASTEST way to the refined search area, with the INTUITIVE search acoustics making victims easier to locate. Equipped with the patented SMART-ANTENNA-TECHNOLOGY™, avalanche victims are found much better with the ZOOM+. The device analyzes ist position in the avalanche and automatically switches to the BEST TRANSMISSION ANTENNA. The latest digital 3-antenna technology is utilized at ORTOVOX just as much as the automatic switchover in case of a follow-up avalanche.

SMART-ANTENNA-TECHNOLOGY™ More easily found with the ZOOM+! The integrated SMART-ANTENNA-TECHNOLOGY™ analyzes the position of the antennas in the avalanche and AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHES TO THE BEST TRANSMISSION ANTENNA. The result: Almost double the range in the worst coupling position, regardless of the beacon used for searching.

SECONDARY AVALANCHE SWITCHOVER We have added a MOTION SENSOR to the ZOOM+ to enable secondary avalanche switchover. If the sensor has not detected any motion for 120 seconds during the search, it automatically switches back to transmit mode. Thus rescuers can also be found if there has been a secondary avalanche.

TURN ON

RECCO REFLECTOR INSIDE For maximum protection, we’ve also equipped the ZOOM+ with a Recco reflector. Recco helps professional rescuers find victims buried in the snow even faster. This offers an ADDITIONAL POSSIBILITY of being found quickly. The backup technology is used by more than 700 ski areas and rescue teams around the world.

SEARCHING EASIER INTUITIVE DESIGN

INTUITIVE DESIGN We’ve SLIMMED DOWN the ZOOM+ to its most important elements. With only two buttons, faulty operation is virtually impossible. Once switched on, the user can switch between sending and searching modes using the safety switch. Further search instructions are then displayed on the large LED display. A soft rubber ring around the outside of the device ensures easy handling and provides additional protection. To prevent loss, we’ve given the ZOOM+ an elastic hand loop and practical carrying case.

VISUAL + ACOUSTIC SEARCH Switch from SEND to SEARCH AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVERS

The ZOOM+ focuses the person searching on the large display in the middle of the device. LEDs are used to show the distance to the victim, the direction using arrows and if there is more than one victim. Large LEDs are easy to read especially in poor visibility conditions and at night. The VISUAL SEARCH MODE IS SUPPORTED BY INTUITIVE SEARCH ACOUSTICS. Higher and fast sounds tell you that you are approaching the avalanche victim. The sophisticated sound sequence clearly signals when buried victims are near.

SEARCH MODE

Arrows indicate the DIRECTION TOWARDS THE VICTIM. DISTANCE DISPLAY At distances of 40 m or greater from the victim, the distance display will be stable.

The display blinks when MULTIPLE VICTIMS are within close range (approx. 10 m). At greater distances from the victims, the display is illuminated continuously.

FINE SEARCH At distances of 2,5 m or less from the victim, fine search begins and the directional arrow is no longer active.

3+ SMART AND EASY! With the 3+ you are in charge ! The PATENTED SMART-ANTENNA-TECHNOLOGY™ with intelligent position recognition automatically switches to the best transmission antenna. YOU WILL BE FOUND easier. We make no compromises in terms of searching either. The 3+ is equipped with all the features of a modern, digital 3-antenna device. The ILLUMINATED REAL-TIME DISPLAY tells you the direction, distance and number of victims. The TENDENCY DISPLAY, combined with the INTUITIVE SEARCH ACOUSTICS, leaves no doubt when operating in fine search mode. Once located, victims can be removed from the display using the flagging function. The motion-sensor-based FOLLOW-UP AVALANCHE SWITCHOVER ensures additional safety. We have also thought about the future: the 3+ can be UPDATED and protects the environment with just a single battery.

S1+ TOTAL OVERVIEW The S1+ combines the success stories of two unique avalanche transceiver innovations: the DISPLAY SHOWING THE RELATIVE POSITION OF AVALANCHE VICTIMS and the SMARTANTENNA-TECHNOLOGY™! Handling the device is more intuitive than ever. Once switched on, it transmits, but when opened up it switches straight to search mode. The illuminated 360° REAL-TIME DISPLAY shows the position in the avalanche and gives UNMISTAKABLE ACTION INSTRUCTIONS. As soon as the person searching begins the pinpoint search, the PATENTED CIRCULAR display and INTUITIVE SEARCH ACOUSTICS help the location process. Located victims can now be flagged and the search can continue. FOLLOW-UP AVALANCHE SWITCHOVER and SMART-ANTENNA-TECHNOLOGY™ provide a safety plus for the user, while the ECONOMIC POWER MANAGEMENT protects the environment and your wallet – just two batteries are sufficient for 250 hours in transmission mode. Of course the device can be UPDATED.

LESSON | AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVERS

HOW DO THE 3 ANTENNAS OF AN AVALANCHE BEACON WORK?

Modern avalanche transceivers utilize three ANTENNAS (X, Y, Z). AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVER IN SEARCH MODE During searching, all three antennas are used. The X and the Y antennas are used to display range and direction. The Z antenna is used for close search only (the final few meters). AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVER IN TRANSMITTING MODE WITHOUT SMART-ANTENNA: Devices without a Smart-Antenna can send only over the X antenna.

Y

Z X

WITH SMART-ANTENNA: ORTOVOX units S1+, 3+, and ZOOM+ with Smart-Antenna technology are the only units on the market that can SEND OVER BOTH THE X AND Y ANTENNAS. This greatly extends the victim’s transmission range (up to double), making it much easier to find the buried person. We can therefore say that the victim has greater VISIBILITY for the rescuer.

THE POSITION OF THE BURIED TRANSCEIVER IN THE AVALANCHE IS CRITICAL FOR HOW VISIBLE IT WILL BE FOR THE RESCUER. WHY? The transceiver can have two basic POSITIONS in the avalanche: HORIZONTAL or VERTICAL.

VERY HIGH VISIBILITY

HORIZONTAL POSITION = VERY HIGH VISIBILITY The X antenna broadcasts HORIZONTALLY in two dimensions. A horizontally oriented transmission antenna enables HIGH VISIBILITY with a LARGE SURFACE COVERAGE in the search range. This usually makes it easy to find the victim.

VERTICAL POSITION WITHOUT SMART-ANTENNA = POOR VISIBILITY The X antenna broadcasts VERTICALLY. A vertically oriented transmission antenna results in POOR VISIBILITY due to its MINIMAL SURFACE AREA coverage in the search range. Therefore, a vertical sender without Smart-Antenna is very difficult to locate. POOR VISIBILITY WITHOUT SMART-ANTENNA

151

LESSON | AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVERS

VERTICAL POSITION WITH SMART-ANTENNA = VERY HIGH VISIBILITY SOLUTION: The patented SMART-ANTENNA-TECHNOLOGY SOLVES THE PROBLEM of poor visibility caused by a vertical position. The position sensor in all new ORTOVOX avalanche transceivers ANALYZES THE POSITION of the device buried in the avalanche and automatically switches to the Y antenna if the angle is 75° or greater.

VERY HIGH VISIBILITY WITH SMART-ANTENNA

As a result, THE ANTENNA TRANSMITS HORIZONTALLY and the surface coverage in the search range again approaches the maximum range. This RESTORES VERY HIGH VISIBILITY, regardless of which device the rescuer is using. Making it easier to find avalanche victims!

MULTIPLE BURIALS STATISTIC Number of avalanche accidents

Avalanche burials with more than one person are NOT A RARE EVENT. Locating more than one signal often represents a challenge for many avalanche transceivers and can make a quick and efficient location process difficult. Only devices with SHARP SIGNAL ANALYSIS and RELIABLE FLAGGING FUNCTION can SAVE VITAL TIME here.

Number of deaths per avalanche accident in open terrain. Example: 53 accidents with 2 casualties, or 2 accidents with 7 casualties. Source: SLF, Davos (Switzerland, 1980 – 1999).

MULTIPLE BURIALS TRANSMISSION SIGNALS The illustration shows different transmission signals. They are accurately defined in EN300718. EVERY AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVER therefore has its OWN TRANSMISSION SIGNAL, comparable to the human fingerprint.

ORTOVOX DEVICES feature an EXTREMELY PRECISE SIGNAL ANALYSIS. The microprocessor analyzes the transmission pulse, pulse periods and off-time of each individual signal precisely and immediately and converts this into an optic display. The person searching gets a visual display of the distance, direction and number of victims – even the RELATIVE POSITION OF THE VICTIMS in the case of the S1+. Only a SHARP SIGNAL ANALYSIS and the FLAGGING FUNCTION enable several transmission signals to be LOCATED EASILY and EFFECTIVELY.

OFF-TIME Time between end of signal 1 and the start of signal 2, measured in ms.

Every year approx. 150,000 AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVERS are sold worldwide. Most avalanche transceivers require three to four batteries to operate. As batteries should be changed at least ONCE A SEASON, that means an ANNUAL BURDEN on the environment of approx. 450,000 BATTERIES. The VOLTAGE REGULATOR in the new ORTOVOX DEVICES protects our planet! Due to the MORE ECONOMIC POWER CONSUMPTION, most ORTOVOX devices manage with just a SINGLE AA BATTERY.

If all the avalanche transceiver manufacturers in the world used the ORTOVOX voltage regulator, we would relieve our WALLETS and the ENVIRONMENT by almost 300,000 BATTERIES!

AVALANCHE PROBE 240+ CARBON PRO PFA Our top probe model combines the benefits of LOW WEIGHT with HIGH RIGIDITY and robustness. The key to this lies in the selection of components. We use rigid and lightweight carbon with a large 13 mm diameter. In addition to the benefits of low weight and high rigidity, carbon also has very low thermal conductivity, so it is very unlikely to freeze. Like all ORTOVOX probes, the 240+ CARBON PRO PFA has DEPTH MARKERS for determining the right location to begin shoveling. Our PFA QUICK-ASSEMBLY SYSTEM is unique in the market. With just one pull on the closing device, the probe is reliably locked into place. It can also be just as quickly disassembled. The EVA FOAM GRIP SLEEVE adds comfort during extended probing exercises. The use of a robust and durable SYSTEM OF STEEL CABLES and the EXTENSION OPTION are common characteristics of professional probes. Additional elements can be screwed into place if probing for a deeply buried victim. The 240+ CARBON PRO comes in a practical QUICK-RELEASE COVER .

DEPTH LABELS Indicate the burial depth.

SAFETY ACADEMY

RESCUE SLED CONSTRUCTION HAVE YOU EVER BUILT A RESCUE SLED? You’ll never need one anyway? We hope you won’t either. However, there are many alpine regions that have poor network coverage or that can’t be reached by helicopter because of the weather. That’s why we are showing you the BASICS IN JUST A FEW STEPS.

1

WB_2015-16.indb 158

You carry MOST OF THE ITEMS with you on every SKI TOUR ANYWAY. The only additional things you'll need are THREE FOUR-METER ACCESSORY CORDS. You should make sure that each ski has a hole in the tip, and the same with the shovel blade – here you need four holes, like the PRO ALU III has.

13.11.14 22:10

159

2

3

Now feed the first accessory CORD through the HOLES AT THE SHOVEL BLADE edge and stretch them across the ski. After this step, both accessory cords should be the SAME LENGTH.

In the next step, secure the SKI POLES with a clove hitch above the plate and pull the accessory cords through the holes in the end of the skis and the blade of the shovel.

4

TIGHTEN THE CORDS to the required tension, include the toe piece of the binding and SECURE IT using a clove hitch or slip knot.

5

6

WB_2015-16.indb 159

Use new accessory cords to TIE AND SECURE THE STOPPERS of the bindings with clove hitches. Finally, wrap the CORDS AROUND THE SHOVEL HANDLE A FEW TIMEs to secure it between the skis.

At the end, A BACKPACK CAN BE ATTACHED TO THE CONSTRUCTION to make the injured party more comfortable. Should there be another helper with you, the third accessory cord can be secured to the shovel handle with a figure eight loop, to act as an ARRESTING CABLE for controlled downhill transport.

SHOVELS POCKET SPIKE Our new POCKET SPIKE is simply ingenious! Although usually tucked away in your backpack or pants pocket (hence the name), the POCKET SPIKE can quickly be retrieved in tense situations, for instance, when you’ve only got a FEW FEET TO THE SUMMIT or if you have to cross a STEEP SLOPE. In two steps, you can mount it on to the PRO ALU III shovel handle for added protection. The POCKET SPIKE has two parts: the tough axe blade made from AL 7075 T6 and the spike, which is attached in place of the shovel blade. The two parts snap together to form a single piece with no sharp edges and weighing just 95 GRAMS. This tool is perfect for tours where you are happy about some additional support when you’ve only got a few feet left to the summit.

COMPACT SIZE At just 15cm, the carrying bag fits into any backpack compartment.

LESSON | DIGGING OUT

Read of the VICTIM‘S DEPTH from the probe and walk down the slope by this figure and start shoveling in a V-shape. With SEVERAL HELPERS, replace the shoveller at the top after 1 MINUTE AT THE latest. The positions should be taken as follows: CUT OUT BLOCKS, SHOVEL, and CLEAR SNOW AWAY.

1

TIP: Shovels with a CLEARING FUNCTION can save valuable time here.

MATERIALS GLOSSARY PROBES

SHOVELS

PFA TENSIONING SYSTEM

6061 ALUMINUM T6

“Patented Flash Assembly“ stands for reliable tensioning within seconds and just as quick release and folding. Tensioning: simply hold the last element and remove the cap. The elements are secured and the probe is ready for use. Release: engage the quick release and the probe is ready to be folded.

The strongest aluminum available - used in our high-end safety products for optimal balance between weight and rigidity. The 6061 aluminum T6 is used in all ORTOVOX shovel handles and the blade of the KODIAK.

7075 ALUMINUM T6

This type of aluminum is light yet rigid and, therefore, our first choice for many of our shovel scoops.

Light and stiff and thus the aluminum of our choice for all aluminum probes. We use different tube diameters between 11 and 13 mm meaning: the thicker the diameter, the heavier and stiffer the probe.

CARBON Our premium probes are made of carbon. The material is extremely stiff, yet very light. Another advantage is the low thermal conductivity of the material – the probe is more resistant to freezing.

5052 ALUMINUM

D-GRIFF The D-handle is regarded as the king of all handles. Its orientation and ergonomics allow for maximum lift. Thus you can remove more snow without tiring.

CONICAL HANDLE + RUBBERIZATION

Steel is extremely rigid and sturdy. When weight is not a factor, but reliability and probing accuracy play a major role, steel is the first choice!

The shovel handle has an oval cross section, which gives it better durability than round cross sections. The same is true for the stiffness. The force transmission and thus the shoveling performance are much higher. Most of our shovel handles are telescopic – this reduces the pack size and enables economic handling.

STEEL CABLE PULL LINE

SAW

Our most reliable pull line system. For a little extra weight, you get maximum safety.

DYNEEMA® DRAWSTRING

A wood and snow saw is integrated in the Beast Saw‘s handle. Ideal for snowmobilers entangled with brush. The saw clears the way for you. You can also use the saw to carve snow profiles or to cut ice blocks for building an igloo.

The material is light and robust and therefore perfect for our highend probes.

EASY-PLUG CLEARING FUNCTION KODIAK

STEEL

The Kodiak‘s entrenching action is the strongest on the market. The shovel blade slides onto the handle at a 90° angle, the grip remains 100 % usable. Thus aluminum fits on aluminum – a virtually indestructible combination. The entrenching action significantly assists the rescue of buried victims with two or more helpers.

CHANCE OF SURVIVAL

BURIAL DEPTH

Statistics show that the chance of survival drastically decreases AFTER 15 MINUTES (compared with 90% between 0 and 15 minutes).

Average burial depth measures 50 cm = ca. 1,5 m³ excavation. Saving time digging means INCREASING THE CHANCES OF SURVIVAL.

PRO GEAR ORTOVOX TRAINING PARK Training and mastering the use of the emergency equipment is just as important as risk-conscious behavior in the field! The ORTOVOX TRAINING PARK is a PERMANENTLY INSTALLED STATION where you can get training on all types of AVALANCHE SCENARIOS, FROM SIMPLE TO COMPLEX. One to five of up to 16 transmitters can be activated from the control center in parallel, according to the random principle. The weatherproof station is independent of the power grid (battery-operated) and sends out the search times for purposes of ANALYSIS. PROBE HITS on the probing surface of the transmitter are confirmed by VISUAL AND AUDIBLE SIGNALS.

# 11520 FEATURES Compatible with all avalanche transceiver types Single and multiple burial avalanche search Up to 16 remote-controllable transmitters Probe hits confirmed on realistic probing surfaces 60 cm x 40 cm Fixed control center with snow depth adjustment Information panel (56 cm x 70 cm) in 1-2 languages; logo placement possible Battery autonomy for a complete winter season Robust, low-maintenance construction Search field space requirements: 100 m x 100 m The device is easy for anyone to understand and operate 3 ORTOVOX beach flags are provided for marking the field Height: 5m (including snow spike) Possibility for RECCO Professionals Training

THANK YOU, TEAM

PHOTO Dirk Wagener

Putting together just under 200 pages in four languages is only possible if the team really works together and manages to always stay cool! ... OUR THANKS TO ... ... THE WHOLE ORTOVOX TEAM who, despite the sun and snow, gave their best to the camera. … HANSI, DANIELE, DIGGER and Kilian for their excellent camera work. … MATTHIAS for the great product photos and the comfy sofa in the studio. ... JULIE who, despite being under enormous pressure, wrote beautiful texts. ... ALL OF THE SWISS FAMERS, SHEPHERDS and SWISSWOOL EMPLOYEES for the authentic Swiss feeling when we came to visit. ... THE TASMANIAN TOURISM BOARD, who supported us so brilliantly when we visited the farms. ... OUR TASMANIAN FARMERS and the infinite number of helping hands that care for our sheep and keep us updated with reports.
