Central Saint Martins / BA Architecture (2015) : CRISIS Croydon Festival (Tanya Anand, Mona Glousnyte, Jonathon Howard, Connor James, Chiao-Ming Lin, Jamieson Tu)
PROJECT STATEMENT TO ENHANCE THE SERVICES OFFERED BY CRISIS THROUGH TRANSIENCE AND MOBILITY. FACILITATING THEIR SERVICES WITH THE AID OF OUR TAILORED SATELITES, IN THE HOPE OF GIVING PEOPLE CONFIDENCE OUT OF HOMELESSNESS WITH EASE AND CONVENIENCE. THE PROPOSAL AIMS TO INTEGRATE THE SATELITES INTO THE CROYDON SKYLIGHT CENTRE AS A FEATURE TO THE PROPSED PLANS BY CRISIS, AS WELL AS CREATE AWARENESS AROUND CROYDON WITH THE TRAVELLING SATELITES. IN ADDITION TO ELEVATING THEIR SPIRITS WITH AN ENJOYABLE EVENT HELD ONCE A MONTH, THE PROPOSAL AIMS TO CREATE A COMMUNITY WITHIN THE EVENT BY HONING THE SERVICE NETWORKS AROUND CROYDON, INTO A FOCUSED SPACE. WITH THE RESULT OF FREQUENT VISITORS WHO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE BACK TO CROYDON AND CRISIS THROUGH WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNED FROM UTILISING THE SATELITES AND ADDITIONAL SERVICES WITHIN THE SKYLIGHT CENTRE.

DESIGN AGENDA, SITUATIONS AND STRATEGIES
AGENDA. SPECIFICALLY FOCUSSING ON WHAT CRISIS ALREADY OFFERS IN TERMS OF ITS OPPORTUNITIES, SERVICES AND SUPPORT FOR THE HOMELES, THE PROPSAL ALSO UTILISES MANY OF THE AVAILABLE, YET CURRENTLY UNINVOLVED SERVICE ENTITIES FROM AROUND THE CROYDON BOROUGH.
MOVED BY WHAT NIGHTWATCH DOES, WE CAME UP WITH OUR CONCEPT OF THE CROYDON FESTIVAL. THE AIM OF THE PROPOSAL IS TO CREATE AWARENESS ABOUT CRISIS IN THE WHOLE OF THE CROYDON VISINITY, WITH HELP FROM SPECIALISED MOBILE SATELLITES, TO PROVIDE IMMEDIATE CARE TO THE HOMELESS, AS WELL AS ACTING AS A BEACON FOR THE SKYLIGHT CENTRE. A PARTICULAR SITUATION THAT WAS HIGHLIGHTED WAS THE LACK OF CONFIDENCE OR AWARENESS A HOMELESS PERSON MAY HAVE TO GET HELP FROM AN ORGANISATION LIKE CRISIS. THEREFORE WHY NOT BRING CRISIS TO THE HOMELESS.
WE PROPOSE 4 UNIQUE SATELLITES TO ROAM THE STREETS OF CROYDON ONCE A WEEK, TO GIVE MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC A CHANCE TO ENGAGE WITH THEM DEPENDING ON WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED. FOR MOST DAYS OF THE WEEK, THE SATELLITES ARE HOUSED INSIDE THE CRISIS EPICENTRE, AS PART OF THE INTERNAL ARRANGEMENT. INTERROGATING THE SPACE, THEY PROVIDE ALTERNATIVE FUNCTIONS AS A RESULT OF THEIR TRANSFORMABLE FEATURES, GIVING FLEXIBILITY FOR CRISIS TO USE THE STRUCTURES TO ENHANCE THEIR SERVICES IS MANY WAYS.
ONCE A MONTH THE SATELITES WOULD ALL COME TOGETHER TO FORM AN EVENT IN CELEBRATION OF HOW CRISIS ARE HELPING AND WHAT MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC HAVE LEARNED FROM ENGAGING WITH THE CHARITY. IT IS A CHANCE FOR THE COMMUNITY TO SHOWCASE THEMSELVES THROUGH PERFORMANCE AND EXHIBITION, OR PERHAPS JUST AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET NEW PEOPLE IN A FUN, UPLIFTING ENVIRONMENT. MEMBERS CAN STILL BENEFIT FROM UTILISING THE SPECIFIC SERVICE (IMMEDIATE CARE) OF EACH SATELLITE, DURING THE FESTIVAL, IF THEY REQUIRE IT. A NETWORK IS CREATED WHERE THE STRUCTURES BECOME ALIVE, WORKING TOGETHER WITH CROYDON TO FORM THE EVENT.
THE STRUCTURES WOULD BE OPERATED BY QUALIFIED VOLUNTEERS FROM THE SERVICES AROUND CROYDON WHICH WE HAVE IDENTIFIED.

THE FOOD SATELITE WITHIN THE EPICENTRE, ALSO BEING USED AS A SMALL STUDIO WITHIN THE ART ROOM.
|FOOD SATELLITE
1:50 PLAN
The food unit is able to transform for multiple uses within the Croydon Festival and the internal activities of Crisis. Coming out of the building once a week it acts as the food satellite moving around certain allocated areas and providing homeless people with street food. Once in Crisis, without much change, the structure acts as the interactive installation to be engaged with during the art classes.

|MEDICAL SATELLITE
1:50 PLAN
|MEDICAL SATELLITE As with our food satellite we have paid particular attention to achieve a design which is multifunctional and practical. Specifically intended to be placed beneath the existing staircase whilst within the crisis building, this satellite takes the form of the resulting negative space. Used as a storage unit when in situè, but transforms into our proposed medical satellite when inserted into Croydon, providing first aid, general information and one to one care.

|EDUCATION SATELLITE
1:50 PLAN
|EDUCATION SATELLITE Visually protruding, the structure stands tall and acts as the education beacon for the Croydon Festival. The flipping plywood boards allow the structure to change the form depending on the location it is in and the time it is being used at. While sitting in Crisis the structure is fully erected and enclosed, providing several quiet spaces to hide and read a book. Once outside, the top boards are separated in order to provide the interior with daylight as well as to allow a larger amount of people.
1:50 SECTION
|HYGIENE SATELLITE The Hygiene Satellite provides 24hr shower and bathing space. The structure does not transform in any way due to the mechanics of the water and drainage systems. The structure sits outside Crisis, allowing the user the advantage of taking a shower at any point of the day. Rarely being inside, the construction is provided with sky lights to prevent the humidity and accelerate ventilation, as well as to increase the amount of natural daylight.

| INSIDE CRI S I S
The Satellites installed into Crisis are an extention of the programmes and opportunities that Crisis offers. The proposal aims to create a hub within the reception of crisis to represent each programme and opportunity the charity provides, in an inviting atmosphere. The grandure of the education satellite makes use of the double height ceiling as well as maximising the amount of books that can be carried. The charity’s plans for a new staircase triggered the design of the medical unit as the space requires privacy and discretion The Food Satellite is able to transform and expand in order to host a multitude of different art programmes. As the Hygiene unit is a 24 hour service, the decision was made to have it fixed outside the epicentre.
