hen asking questions such as how Croydon can work as an expanded dwelling for the homeless, crisis offers interesting insights into how the issue as a whole can be perceived and subsequently approached in a constructive way. Where the central idea of Crisis is based around the rebuilding of life structure through their guidance and support, the Crisis centre in Spitalfields placed a particular emphasis on the arts as means of rehabilitation and reintegration to those who have been subjected to societal neglect. When defining our strategy, utilizing the art and cultural scene as a tool for changing the status quo seemed particularly apt as their was a latent art scene and social activism operating within the area. In our project, we have explored how the crisis centre might graft itself onto it’s urban context in way that benefits not only the crisis members but the whole of Croydon as well. By tapping into currently expanding networks in the area, our theoretical intervention aims to revitalize the area’s culture and provide a means of reintegration to those who have become disassociated with normal everyday life.

HOMELESSNESS IN THE UK AND CROYDON WHAT IS THE ISSUE?

Crisis. Crisis are the leading charity in the UK specifically for single homeless people. Single homeless are always at the bottom of any waiting list and are the most subject to sleeping rough. Crisis are a consultive charity, members are guided towards having a home through skills workshops. Crisis bases itself on enabling its members to achieve themselves. Crisis do not provide homes, they activate potential and teach their members in order to retain sustainable lifestyles into the future. The chairity identifies exsisting networks local to where the ‘skylight’ centres are based, running workshops and using spaces in collaboration with other homeless organisations, such as ‘Cafe Art’.

Physco-geographic Homeless Map Inhabiting the city as a rough sleeper takes a nomadic lifestyle. One is always in transit, on the move, going from place to place. The urban environment is negotiated by landmarks and safehouses. Time can become easily lost, clocktowers, the sun and stars are the tellers. Habits of living are based on primative needs, hunger, shelter & water.
Intergrated urban development concept combing top down and bottom up processes. Urban Catalyst acknowledges the agencies that top and bottom players have in place-making. Working towards a masterplan, that allows for the possibilty of change through bottom up interventions. THF: Intergrated Urban Development Urban Catalyst, 2007-2008

THE EPICENTRE _ BILLBOARD DESIGN Activists such as Kevin Zuchowski-Morrisson conduct a collaborative workshop at Croydon Crisis Skylights. Crisis members are engaged in a Billboard Studio design workshop., held in the epicentre. The studios will ultimately contain space and allow members (who have been reintegrated into society), to have a place to work.

2
THE FACTORY_ CONSTRUCTION BRIEF Each billboard studio is strategically placed around the city, and is designed in response to it’s immediate context. When the Billboard’s design is complete, another workshop follows the former. This is held near Fairfield Halls, where the Factory has been constructed for the production of billboards and other secondary public activities. Prior to the contrsuction of the Billboards, a briefing is held outside the workshop (see left).

3
THE FACTORY_ BILLBOARD CONTRUCTION The Billboard contruction process itself raised spirits and teaches member useful skills that equip them with employability. The activity, commands the attention of the public, raising curiosity and a general interest in what is occurring.
BILLBOARD DESIGN AND BUILD PROCESS 14 CRISIS MEMBER AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
We explored multiple options for our ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ satellites keeping a lo-fi theme and concept throughout. Combining simple and traditional timber construction techniques using box-frames and intuitive joints, we hope to create basic architectural forms that serves its function which can later be ellaborated upon. The structures had to be able to accomodate for multi-use public activities, contain artist spaces and allow to have open and closed areas or the ability to adapt.
