PROJECT DESCRIPTION
project description How can we readjust local economies to potentiate under-utilised assets along Caledonian High Street using Collaborative Consumption networking as an appropriation tool? This project is about developing a framework for a sharing network along Caledonian Road High Street. This network is expressed through a series of 5 corner shops which were found to be under-utilised at the High Street . The local conditions (local communities and activities) is what inform and build up such network that shares and swap skills between its users. The project consist on creating a module for a building that can be multiplied and seat within 5 different corner shops of this sharing network. Such module is adaptable to each type of shop; we are considering (either technology/ education/ daily-services/ homeware/ wellness). Each shop would allocate 2 different programme spaces, according to its respective theme. At the street level, public and commercial, the programme is on a straight relation to the high street; and the other, private, is placed on the top level of the building. In between the two programmes, we find this consistent open/ public buffer zone; a main social hub space that allow for skills swap between the two referred programmes. Not just a void, but a stage that works as a catalyst for skills exchange among the users observations and interactions. In this Portfolio we are going to specifically look into 1 of the set of 5 corner shops; the Wellness shop, or Wellness centre. Meant to work as a regenerator for cultural and socio-economic activity; here we support the idea of an urban village acting over Caledonian High Street. It host a charity shop in the bottom (programme 1), a business investigated at the initial site survey, and a Meditation space on the top (programme 2). Both programmes merge together at this in between buffer zone, represented by an open-air Cafe. Essentially, the building should represent a vertical continuation of the High street, with different degrees of public and privateness/ with different degrees of exposure as you transit from outside-inside or inside-outside. A big ramp gesticulate the outside facade, inviting users in, and what expose them to different activities as they are driven towards the whole building programme.
Background 21st century - We have been moving from an individualist high consumption, to a collaborative consumption life style. We no longer need 'superfluous' items, we need a sense of community where participation is fundamentally important. We now live in a 'global village', where there is an entire marketplace for efficient peer-to-peer exchanges of skills, stuff, space and time. We drive towards an inclusive Public Participation in Design where cultural segregation among different religions, cultural and ethnic groups can be countered with the creation of wider and more integrated community groups. Here new technologies unlock a hidden wealth of under-utilised resources, through efficient models of redistribution and shared access. Skills Swap, Collaborative Life-style, Volunteering, Time Banking, Trusting Strangers, Local Manufacturing are Sharing Resources are our tools to unlock person-to-person and crowd driven investment models that decentralise finance and allow the rise of the Micro-Entrepreneurship. The major goal, is to stop understanding architecture as unique and singular objects, and start to understand and produce architecture as a strategy, a process, a system of relations, a process in which both time and the user take part, and the essential matter of space is energy, an atmosphere for feelings and perceptions; a stage to exchange relation among them.

THE HIGH STREET OF THE FUTURE
caledonian road - high street offscreen & precariousness
community centres are often hidden away, meaning that they dont face the highstreet; mainly located on the skirts, in parallel streets. this probably occur because properties along a highstreet increase their value, therefore is wort for the government charge taxes to them; community centres dont pay taxes, and dont have a particular income.
how to create a really engaging community? how to implement civic-pride through out participation?
Cultural Segregation
connectivity
this culture diversity is mainly expressed through out food places/ restaurants. But they are disconnected from evrything else (they are just there); therefore segregated. -
today feels much easier to reach the whole outside world, rather than your local neighbourhood/ local community...
how to make people aware/ perceive and be confortable within other/different cultures?
how to revive the spirit of villa/ boulevard ?

At what point does these deviations become: Perceiving a corner, primarily depends on our perspectives: Enough angle to perceive the corner? depends where you look from:
A acute angle? / A right angle?
A straight line? / A segmented line?
A circular segment? / change in the contour?
Front view = plane wall Side view = perceive change
on plane surface
Corners can be articulated by simply contrasting the surface qualities (materiality). Our perception of its existance is also affected by the quality of light that illuminates the form (’Tectonics’).

Migration Threats Such old traditional family grocery stores began to face competition on two fronts: on the one hand from immigrant-owned corner shops, trading longer hours, and on the other from the rise of the supermarket, which amalgamated many specialist retailers such as butchers, bakers, and grocers under one roof at increasingly cheaper prices and with room for a greater choice of products.
Polish Delicatessen
Spatial Reference Corners shop was normally a spatial reference for locals: “meet me at the corner shop”- there is no need to name streets, as evryone already know specifically where the corner shop is located.due to urbanization, urban sprawl, and the relatively recent phenomenon of big-box stores. The term "general merchandise store" is also used to describe a hybrid of a department store, with a wide selection of goods, and a discount store, with low prices.
Kids meeting at local Corner shop
Products Variety Broad selection of merchandise, sometimes in a small space, this is where local people come to purchase all their general goods. The store carried routine stock and used to obtain special orders from warehouses. Often sell staple food items such as milk and bread, and various household goods such as hardware and electrical supplies. And uses the two different corner facade sides to advertise different products.

WHAT WAS THIS TYPOLOGY NORMALLY USED FOR BEFORE?
Family Business Emerged in remote places where mobility was limited and a single shop was sufficient to service the entire community. Due to its close connection to its customers, these dealers often adjusted their sales offerings to the specific preferences of their community. Normally a family ran business, their suppliers were small producers, creating a micro- enterprise economy between them.
