Comunidad / Comunnitty 66 niños locales son adoptados en el día nacional de la adopción Kissimmee, FL - El 16 de noviembre, los jueces de los Condados Orange, Osceola y Seminole unieron oficialmente a 66 niños con sus nuevos padres durante una ceremonia de adopción, estableciendo un récord local para el Día Nacional de la Adopción. Catorce niños fueron adoptados en el Condado Osceola, 42 en el Condado Orange y 10 en el condado Seminole. "Nuestros niños y nuestras familias están entusiasmados por este día porque significa un nuevo comienzo", dijo Glen Casel, presidente y CEO de Community Based Care de Central Florida (CBCCF), la agencia líder que supervisa los servicios de acogida y adopción a nivel local.

66 local children are adopted on national adoption day Kissimmee, FL - On November 16th, judges in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties officially united 66 children with their new parents during an adoption ceremony, setting a local record for National Adoption Day. Fourteen children were adopted in Osceola County, 42 in Orange County and 10 in Seminole County. “Our kids and families are excited for this day because it means a new start,” said Glen Casel, president and CEO of Community Based Care of Central Florida (CBCCF), the lead agency

overseeing foster care and adoption services locally. “Children yearn to feel safe and loved, and we’ve helped nearly 3,000 children find those families since our inception in 2004.” CBCCF hopes National Adoption Day will remind people about the number of children who still need permanent, loving homes.

There are 115 children across the tri-county area currently in foster care and available for adoption. To learn more about foster parenting or adoption, prospective families can visit www.ProtectandInspire.org.

airless environment of low Earth orbit. The launch of the first element of the Space Station kicked off an incredible journey of orbital assembly, operations and science.

Valencia College to study ways to contain rising costs of college Orlando, FL - As families grapple with the increasing cost of college – while watching their family incomes remain flat – Valencia College has enacted a new policy, aimed at ensuring that the cost of college remains affordable.

Valencia College’s Board of Trustees recently approved the new policy, which mandates that college officials consider affordability and cost to students when designing new degree programs and courses.

Among the items to be examined will be the cost of textbooks, lab fees and other student fees, as well as the percentage of students who take out student loans.

Because tuition at many state and private colleges and universities has

escalated dramatically over the past 20 years, “high-access, affordable colleges like Valencia carry a special responsibility to carefully steward their affordability and access and to build pathways to other institutions, lowering the overall cost to all.

To track its progress, Valencia College will now begin benchmarking affordability measures on both a national and local basis, tracking and publishing those results annually, and integrating affordability into the college’s annual budget process.

While Valencia’s tuition is already among the lowest in the state of Florida – at about $3,200 a year – the college is addressing other factors that can also increase the cost of college.

Textbooks, for instance, sometimes cost more than tuition for a course.

Since 2010, Valencia College faculty members have used a variety of methods to reduce textbook costs, from bulk purchasing to using textbook alternatives, such as opensource books. From 2010 to 2016, Valencia College cut the average cost of textbooks 47 percent – from $127.38 per class in 2010 to $67.68 by 2016.

The new affordability policy also mandates that, as Valencia adds bachelor’s degrees to its lineup of degree programs, college officials examine ways to make each new degree affordable, through the use of online classes, more affordable labs,

and access to financial assistance.

The cost of a bachelor’s degree at Valencia is already among the lowest in the state – under $13,000 for a four-year degree for Florida residents – Valencia officials are working to ensure that the other costs remain affordable as well.

Valencia officials plan to work with UCF officials to reduce the number of students taking excess classes – and ensure that students meet their degree program’s prerequisites prior to transferring to UCF – both factors that increase the cost of earning a degree. Valencia officials will track those figures each year.

The college will publish its first affordability report in spring 2019.

Juramentaciones / Swearing In Juramentación de Comisionados del Condado Osceola Osceola County, FL – Las Comisionadas del Condado Osceola, Viviana Janer (Distrito 2) y Cheryl Grieb (Distrito 4) prestaron juramento para su segundo mandato de 4 años el martes 20 de noviembre. La ceremonia se llevó a cabo en el tercer piso de la sala del tribunal del palacio de justicia del Condado Osceola. De cara al futuro, ambas comisionadas hablaron sobre asuntos pendientes y objetivos para su segundo mandato. Janer es la primera latina y la tercera hispana en ser elegida para el consejo de cinco personas.

Kissimmee, FL - On November 20, 2018 at the Kissimmee City Hall, City of Kissimmee Commissioner-Elect Felix Ortiz (Seat #2) was sworn-in during the City Commission meeting following the acceptance of the Election Results certified by the Osceola County scrutiny board on November 16, 2018. The event was attended by Commissioners and staff from the City of Kissimmee and people from the community.

Osceola County, FL – Osceola County Commissioners Viviana Janer (District 2) and Cheryl Grieb (District 4) took the oath of office for their second 4-year terms on Tuesday.

The ceremony was held in the thirdfloor courtroom of the Osceola County Historic Courthouse. Looking ahead, both commissioners talked about unfinished business and goals for their second terms. Janer is the first Latina and only the third Hispanic ever to be elected to the 5-person board. She has a background in corporate accounting and was sworn-in by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. Grieb, the current Vice Chair of the board and a Realtor, was sworn-in by Judge Carol Draper.

When they were first elected in 2014, Janer and Grieb made history – the first time two women have served on the Board of County Commissioners at the same time. Two years later Peggy Choudhry joined Grieb and Janer as the Commissioner for District 1 – the first time the board was comprised of most women, something that will continue for at least two more years.

The Board of County Commissioners is scheduled to select a new chair and vice chair on December 3.

Equipo SWAT del Sheriff de Osceola gana competencia internacional

Osceola Sheriff’s Office SWAT team wins International Competition

Condado Osceola, FL - El Equipo de Armas Especiales y Tácticas de la Oficina del Alguacil del Condado Osceola (SWAT, por sus siglas en inglés) ganó la 36ª Competencia Internacional de Recolección de SWAT. La competencia de este año produjo 54 equipos SWAT de seis países diferentes. Estos 6 días de entrenamiento incluyeron dos días de instrucción y cuatro días de competencia. Las clases de instrucción incluyeron interrogatorios de situación, armas de fuego, bragas, limpieza de la sala y otra instrucción ocupacional. Condado Osceola, FL -The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) won the 36th International SWAT Round-Up Competition this past week (11/11-11/16), at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Range.

This year’s competition yielded 54 SWAT teams from six different countries. These 6 days of training included two days of instruction and four days of competition. Instructional classes included situational debriefs, firearms, breeching, room clearing and other occupational instruction. The competition included the following: Blind event - Competitors were given a hostage rescue scenario, Osceola County SWAT took third place in this event.

Pricher Scramble - Competitors navigated several obstacles and engage designated targets with both handguns and rifles, Osceola County SWAT took second place in this event.

Officer Rescue - Competitors navigated several obstacles and engage designated targets with both handgun and rifles. The competitors had to rescue a selected officer and carry him/her through the remaining obstacles and over the finish line.

Osceola County SWAT took third place in this event.

Tower Scramble - Competitors were required to navigate numerous obstacles and engage designated targets; they were also required to ascend and rappel from the Orange County Range Tower. Osceola County SWAT took third place in this event.

Obstacle Course - Competitors were required to navigate numerous obstacles as a group, including traversing high wall, crawling under obstacles submerged in water and climbing ropes. Osceola County SWAT took sixth place in this event.

Our SWAT team’s combined score was 258 or 7 points higher than the second-place team from (NASA SWAT) and 19 points in front of the third-place team (TEK Hungary). Our SWAT team is a group of 22 men and women that are trained to assist our agency when situations arise that may exceed the responding deputy’s resources and understanding.

Secretario de la Corte Armando Ramírez da gracias a la comunidad Condado Osceola, FL - Con motivo de la celebración del Día de Acción de Gracias, por sexto año consecutivo, el secretario de la Corte del Condado Osceola, Honorable Armando Ramírez, junto a Unidos Supermarket de la Simpson Road en Kissimmee, regalaron aproximadamente 300 pavos a familias con limitaciones económicas.

El evento, que se llevó a cabo el viernes 16 de noviembre, que ha estableció la actividad como una tradición en su carácter personal, en agradecimiento a los ciudadanos quienes lo han honrado en pasadas elecciones con sus votos.

Las familias, mayormente hispanas, fueron identificadas por los pastores de las iglesias correspondientes al Distrito 2, que incluye Mills Run, BVL, Lakeside, Remington, entre otras áreas.

Clerk of Court Armando Ramírez thanks the community Condado Osceola, FL - On the occasion of the celebration of Thanksgiving Day, Osceola County Court Clerk Honorable Armando Ramirez for the sixth consecutive year, together with Unidos Supermarket on Simpson Road in Kissimmee, gave away approximately 300 turkeys to families with financial limitations.

The event, which took place on Friday, November 16, established the activity as a tradition in its personal character, in gratitude to the citizens that have honored him with their votes in past elections.

Families, most of them Hispanics, were identified by the pastors of the District 2 churches, including Mills Run, BVL, Lakeside, Remington, among other areas.

Annual Florida Blue Florida Classic highlights world-class Camping World Stadium in Orange County Orange County, FL - Once again, Orange County hosted thousands of fans at Camping World Stadium for the 2019 Florida Blue Florida Classic on Saturday, Nov. 17 for the muchanticipated rivalry game between Florida A&M University (FAMU) Rattlers and the Bethune-Cookman University (BCU) Wildcats.

The Florida Classic is the largest football game between two historically black colleges in America, surpassing the Bayou Classic as the top attended game in the NCAA Division 1-AA. Since 1978, the game has seen more than 1.9 million fans in attendance.

The Bayou Classic is the annual college football game between the Grambling State University Tigers and the Southern University Jaguars, first held under that name in 1974 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans.

“I was thrilled to have some of our nation’s best college athletes at Orange County’s renowned Camping World Stadium,” Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs said. “This long-standing rivalry game brings together residents and visitors alike for a weekend of friendly competition.

Congratulations to Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman for a truly exciting game!” The Orange County Board of County Commissioners

(BCC) supports the Florida Classic by awarding $500,000 to the Florida Classic Consortium. The funds generated from the game ultimately helps to provide scholarships for students attending FAMU and BCU. The consortium receives the funds annually and consists of several members from both institutions including the presidents and athletics directors. Camping World Stadium, formally known as the Orlando Citrus Bowl, reopened in 2014 as part of a $94.5 million venues package. This venue has transformed our community into a mecca of economic, cultural and sporting events that enhances the region’s increasingly diverse and creative population for generations to come.

Since construction in 1936, Camping World Stadium has hosted numerous outstanding athletic events, including the NFL Pro Bowl, WrestleMania, FIFA World Cup, and many high-profile college and bowl games. The stadium has also held star-studded performances from iconic artists, such as the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, the Eagles and Jay-Z and Beyoncé. In Jan. 2019, Camping World Stadium will continue its tradition of hosting signature events, including the annual Citrus Bowl, Athletic Bowl, Pro Bowl and Monster Jam.

Osceola Stars Business Awards 2018 Orlando, FL - El pasado viernes 16 de noviembre, 2018 se celebró la entrega de los Osceola Stars Business Awards, en el Hotel Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek. Esto para continuar con la tradición de honrar a los líderes y a la iniciativa privada que han impulsado y destacado en su labor a favor de la comunidad y el desarrollo de la Florida Central. A esta ceremonia, acudieron autoridades como el Sheriff de Osceola, Russ Gibson, el director de asuntos multiculturales de la Ciudad de Orlando, Luis Martínez el cual represento al Mayor Buddy Dyer; también asistio Janet Quiñones de la Oficina del Senador Marco Rubio, entre otros. Osceola Stars Business Awards 2018 Orlando, FL – On Friday, November 16, 2018, the Osceola Stars Business Awards was held at the Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek Hotel. An event honoring the best of Osceola and Central Florida individuals and corporations, they were recognized for their leadership in their field or work, or their commitment to the community.

This awards event was attended by various Central Florida leaders and elected officials among them were Osceola County Sheriff, Russ Gibson, Luis Martinez, Director of multicultural affairs of the City of Orlando, who represented Major Buddy Dyer; also attended by Janet Quiñones from the Office of Senator Marco Rubio. The director of Hope Community Center, Sister Ann Kendrick was in charge of making a reflection and a prayer prior to the event, where she congratulated the winners for their work and commitment to the community. The director of the newspaper El Osceola Star, Guillermo "Bill" Hansen, welcomed the attendees, and recalled the history of Gala Osceola that he started 20 years ago in partnership with the Kissimmee / Osceola Chamber of Commerce, and now the tradition continues thanks to sponsors such as Wyndham Destinations, Orlando Magic, Valencia College, Angels for Kids On Call, El Osceola Star newspaper and Univision Orlando. Fundraising in Orange County for Heart of Florida United Way Orange County, FL - Orange County Government employees gathered on Nov. 15, 2018 to celebrate the completion of another successful Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW) fundraising campaign at the County’s annual Victory Celebration at the Renaissance Senior Center in east Orange County. This year, County employees raised a total of $612,205 for the local nonprofit, again surpassing its $500,000 fundraising goal. Since 1939, HFUW has been at the forefront of health and human care services in the Central Florida region. With a goal targeted toward finding a way to prevent problems affecting the community, HFUW is dedicated to focusing on education, income, health and basic needs. This year, event coordinators took inspiration from the excitement demonstrated by employees during the fundraising season, creating an interactive “late-night talk show” for guests complete with music, comedy segments, interviews and a few surprises for the audience. Every year, HFUW gives Orange County employees an opportunity to give back to the community. The Orange County HFUW Executive Steering Committee, departments and constitutional offices organized more than 100 events since the beginning of the fundraising campaign in June 2018, including luncheons, bake sales, golf tournaments and Orange County Fire Rescue’s 343 Hero Challenge.

For a few hours, Central Florida was the Sports Capital in the USA

Por unas Horas, Florida Central fue la Capital del Deporte en el País Orlando, FL - Entre la noche del viernes y la del sábado, los ojos de los fanáticos del deporte de todo Estados Unidos estuvieron puestos en Orlando.

El viernes, en los 6 combates de Boxeo en el Heritage Park de Kissimmee, televisados nacionalmente. Después, ya en sábado tuvimos la visita del rey LeBron James y sus Lakers al Amway Center para enfrentar al Magic, en el centro de Orlando. Y casi al mismo tiempo, pero en Oviedo, el College Gameday que daba la introducción a otro duelo televisado en toda la nación: Cincinnati versus UCF. Box en Kissimmee: Noche boricua.

De los 12 peleadores, 7 eran de origen puertorriqueño. Las 3 peleas estelares del evento fueron Puerto Rico vs México, y en todas ganó la isla del encanto. Primero, en el duelo entre el boxeador olímpico, Antonio Vargas, y el “Wero” Pérez, donde el primero venció por decisión unánime tras 8 rounds. Después, el hijo del eterno “Macho” Camacho, Cristian “Macho Time” Camacho, venció al mexicano Isaac Cerda, por decisión unánime tras 6 episodios. Y en la estelar de la noche, Jonathan “Bomba” González venció por KO técnico al regiomontano Juan “Pinky” Alejo, en un duelo con golpes sucios y polémica, donde el “Pinky” requirió asistencia médica posterior al cotejo por aparentes hits ilegales en la nuca.

LeBron James en Orlando: El inicio de la era del Rey LBJ en Los Angeles ha sido ambicioso pero lento. Con marca de 8-6 tras 14 partidos, los nuevos Lakers visitaban el Amway Center, repleto y ansioso de ver a LeBron James por primera vez de amarillo. Pero la noche no fue de su majestad. Apenas 22 puntos en 26 minutos, sentándose la mayoría del último cuarto. La noche fue del montenegrino Nikola Vucevic, con 36 puntos y 13 asistencias. El Magic hizo 130 puntos, su cifra más alta del año, y llegó a 4 victorias en los últimos 5 partidos. La noche no fue de LeBron, ni de sus compañeros, Ball, Kuzma, o Ingram, sino del Orlando Magic.

On Friday, at the 6 boxing matches at the Heritage Park in Kissimmee, televised nationally. Then, on Saturday we had the visit of the King, LeBron James, and his Lakers to the Amway Center to face the Magic, in downtown Orlando. And almost at the same time, but in Oviedo, College Gameday was present for the first time here, which gave the introduction to another nationwide televised duel: Cincinnati versus UCF. LeBron James in Orlando: The start of the LBJ era in Los Angeles has been ambitious but slow. With a record of 8-6 after 14 games, the new-look Lakers visited the Amway Center, full and eager to see LeBron James for the first time in a yellow jersey. But the night was not for his majesty. Just 22 points in 26 minutes, sitting most of the last quarter. The night was for Montenegrin Nikola Vucevic, with 36 points and 13 assists. The Magic scored 130 points, its highest number of the year, and reached 4 wins in the last 5 games. The night was not LeBron’s, nor of his companions, Ball, Kuzma, or Ingram, but of the Orlando Magic.

College Gameday at UCF: For the first time in history, a game of primetime game (on national television) was hosted in Orlando.

All day there was a party on campus, and at night the party continued at the Spectrum Stadium. The # 11, UCF Knights, beat strongly 38-13 to # 24 Cincinnati Bearcats, who came with a 9-2 record. Quarterback McKenzie Milton had 268 yards and 3 Touchdowns, and UCF improved its unbeaten record to 100. Hopefully that means a boost in the national ranking to the Knights, who still have the hope of reaching the playoffs (only the first 4 get in)

Entretenimiento / Entertainment Cierre de impacto en la séptima gala, de “Nuestra Belleza Latina” 2018 Miami FL, Noviembre 18Venezuela, República Dominicana, México, Cuba y Honduras llegan a la semifinal de “Nuestra Belleza Latina”. En la gala que definió los nombres de las participantes que pasaron a la octava gala, semifinal, del show, Venezuela tuvo que decidirse por una de sus dos representantes: Migbelis o Andrea.

Las malas noticias fueron para la joven que llegó a “Nuestra Belleza Latina” bailando como Jennifer López.

En esta ocasión el reto lip sync, uno de los favoritos de la audiencia, presentó retos en parejas: Nancy contra Massiel, Yaritza contra

Migbelis y Ceylín contra Andrea; la audiencia debía votar por ellas y la que obtuviera la mayor cantidad de votos sería acreedora de un merecido premio: tendría acceso a su teléfono celular todo un día.

Finalmente llegó el momento más duro de la noche: la eliminación.

En esta gala el grupo se reduciría a cinco, las que podrían competir en la semifinal. El resultado de los votos no había sido favorecedor para Andrea, quien tuvo la menor cantidad de clics por parte de la audiencia y se convirtió en la belleza que debió abandonar la competencia.

La Venezolana, Andrea González, quien entró a la mansión tras haber formado parte de la competencia digital Segundo Chance fue la eliminada de la noche.

Closure of impact in the seventh gala, of "Nuestra Belleza Latina" 2018 Miami FL, Nov 18 - Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Cuba and Honduras reach the semifinals of "Nuestra Belleza Latina". In the gala that defined the names of the participants that passed to the eighth gala, semifinal of the show, Venezuela had to decide on one of its two representatives: Migbelis or Andrea. The bad news was for the young woman who came to "Nuestra Belleza Latina" dancing as Jennifer Lopez.
