Valencia College News Valencia lanza curso para entrenar Técnicos de Mantenimiento de Apartamentos Orlando, FL - Valencia College, en asociación con los desarrolladores de la comunidad de apartamentos del área, lanzó un programa de 10 semanas para capacitar a los trabajadores como técnicos de mantenimiento de apartamentos. Durante el curso, que se imparte actualmente en el campus de Poinciana en Valencia, los estudiantes aprenden a reparar electrodomésticos, plomería, carpintería, reparaciones eléctricas básicas y también a realizar un mantenimiento preventivo. También estarán capacitados en las operaciones de piscinas y spas y en cómo realizar el mantenimiento y la reparación básica de HVAC. El salario promedio por hora de un técnico de mantenimiento de apartamentos en la Florida Central es de $15 a $18 por hora, y muchos empleadores también ofrecen a sus técnicos de mantenimiento un descuento en el alquiler.

Los funcionarios de Valencia College diseñaron el curso de Técnico de Mantenimiento de Apartamentos luego de discusiones con miembros de la Asociación de Apartamentos del Gran Orlando, quienes dijeron que no podían encontrar personas calificadas para ocupar puestos como técnicos de servicio de apartamentos.

La primera clase comenzó en diciembre de 2018 y los 12 estudiantes en el curso se graduarán el 21 de febrero de 2019.

Valencia launches course to train Apartment Maintenance Technicians Orlando, FL - Valencia College, in partnership with area apartment community developers, has launched a 10-week program to train workers as Apartment Maintenance Technicians.

During the course, which is currently being taught at Valencia’s Poinciana Campus, students learn appliance repair, plumbing, carpentry, basic electrical repair, as well as preventive maintenance. They are also trained on pool and spa operations and how to perform basic HVAC maintenance and repair.

The average hourly wage for an apartment maintenance technician in Central Florida is $15 to $18 an hour – and many employers also offer their maintenance technicians discounted rent.

Valencia College officials designed the Apartment Maintenance Technician course after discussions with members of the Apartment Association of Greater Orlando, who said they couldn’t find people who were qualified to fill positions as apartment service technicians.

The first class started in December 2018 and the 12 students in the course are scheduled to graduate on Feb. 21, 2019.

The course is taught Monday through Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. To provide students with relevant work experience, Valencia officials have helped some students find internships with local apartment complexes. On Fridays, some students are interning with local apartment complexes, where they’re earning $13.50 an hour and shadowing experienced service technicians.

Student John Castin, 22, who landed an internship with Concord Rents’ Regatta Bay complex, said he is learning from the experienced techs, but also getting to try some basic repairs on the job.

What Castin likes about the job is the unpredictability of each day. “I, for one, don’t like when things get monotonous,” Castin says. “Having that dynamic, where every day is not the same, I like that. Plus, we’re helping people. If something stops working, we help get their day back on track. And they’re really grateful.”

Students who complete the Valencia College program may earn three industry certifications by the end of the 10-week course: the EPA 608 Technician Certification, which teaches technicians how to handle ozone-

depleting refrigerants often found in air conditioners and appliances; a Certified Pool Operator certification, which demonstrates their knowledge of pool chemicals and operation; and an OSHA 10 certification, which teaches students how to recognize, avoid, abate and prevent safety and health hazards in workplaces. The cost of these certifications is included in the tuition price for the course.

After one year on the job, graduates can also obtain their Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician certification, in which they work with their employers to demonstrate their skills.

Valencia instructors also focus on skills that aren’t always taught in school – how to dress appropriately, the importance of arriving at work on time and how to deal with a frustrated resident whose toilet is overflowing or whose air conditioner isn’t working.

However, the students quickly realize that thanks are their reward.

Students who graduate from the program will have not only marketable skills, but also the chance to live in the complex where they work for a reduced rent. Some employers are offering from 20 to 40 percent reduction in rent, in addition to healthcare benefits.

And while many students may start out working in the apartment or hotel industries, the skills they’re learning are applicable to a number of jobs.

One student plans to take additional coursework in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air condition) and work in that industry. Another student is interested in starting his own handyman/home repair company, while one student says she plans to use her new handyman skills to flip houses.

Valencia is currently offering the program at its Poinciana Campus, with classes beginning in late March and mid-June. They envision offering the 10-week course at a location in east Orange County – to help serve the large number of apartment complexes near UCF. Hoagland boulevard improvements to impact Marsh Landing boat traffic Osceola County, FL - Beginning February 10, contractors for Osceola County working on Hoagland Boulevard Phase 3 will be closing the Marsh Landing area to boat traffic while improvements to the bridge over Shingle Creek are completed.

Work at the site will involve the installation of pilings for a newly reconstructed bridge, as well as the demolition and removal of the existing bridge.

The estimated time for construction of this portion of Hoagland Boulevard Phase 3 is 8-10 months. During this time, the contractor will have in place a barricade of floating barrels both upstream and downstream of the bridge, which will prevent boat traffic from passing under the bridge. It is

imperative for safety reasons that boaters respect the barricades.

Quick facts about Hoagland Boulevard improvements: •Phase 3 begins at the southern end at U.S. Highway 17-92 and continues to just north of the Shingle Creek Bridge.

•The $10.7 million project consists of a four-lane divided roadway, with bike lanes and sidewalks along both sides and improvements to the Shingle Creek Bridge.

•Together with the planned Phase 2 improvements, the new Hoagland Boulevard will more efficiently and more safely move motorists, cyclists and pedestrians from U.S. 17-92 to U.S. Highway 192 upon completion, projected for 2020.

Mr. Kennedy, who passed away in 2000, served on the Orlando City Council from 1972-1980. The breakfast is presented annually by the YMCA of Central Florida. Mayor Demings also provided the keynote remarks at the Orlando VA Medical Center during a special ceremony for local Veterans recognizing Dr. King on Jan.

Rosalind Ave., Orlando. The event is free and open to the public and will feature live music and entertainment for employees, guests and the extended community. Literacy Week is part of the Florida Department of Education’s “Just Read, Florida!” statewide reading initiative that prioritizes reading in Florida’s schools and among all the community groups and volunteer organizations

that support them.

The Orange County Head Start Division (OCHS) promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families.

OCHS has a shared governance system between the Board of County Commissioners; the Policy Council – which is made up of parent’s 51 percent and 49 percent community partners; and Orange County staff.

Head Start serves more than 1,536 children ranging from 3 to 5 years old at 22 centers across Orange County serving families and communities who are economically disadvantaged.

Fulfilling a promise made during his campaign for governor, the Executive Order directs Florida Department of Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran to comprehensively review and recommend revisions to the academic standards for Florida’s kindergarten through grade twelve students.

Holding Government Officials Accountable Governor DeSantis has made it a priority to suspend officials who are negligent and incompetent.

City started street resurfacing project on 8 road segments Kissimmee, FL - The City of Kissimmee’s asphalt mill and overlay project started on Wednesday, February 6, 2019.

The following streets will be resurfaced: •Bryan St. from Ruby Ave. to Beaumont Ave. •Bryan St. from Rose Ave. to John Young Pkwy.

•S. Randolph Ave. from Emmett St. to Penfield St. •S. Clyde Ave. from Emmett St. to Patrick St. •Patrick St. from John Young Pkwy. to Dillingham Ave. •Patrick St. from Clyde Ave. to Beaumont Ave. •S. Orlando Avenue from Emmett St. to Bryan St. •Bay St. from Oak St. to Park St. The Mill and Overlay process is where the top layer of asphalt is removed and replaced with a new top layer. These preventative maintenance process corrects existing voids and helps protect the pavement from future deterioration.

The Public Works & Engineering Department is currently in the final year of our six-year pavement management program.

School News Discurso sobre Estado de la Educación en Osceola 2019 Por: Caroline Vanderlinder Condado Osceola, FL - El Discurso Anual sobre el Estado de la Educación se llevó a cabo el martes, 5 de febrero, en Osceola County School for the Arts. El discurso comenzó con un conmovedor video de estudiantes jóvenes K-12 donde les dicen a los presentes la razón por la cual disfrutan de la escuela y cómo los maestros les demostraron individualmente que les importan. Este año, el distrito mantiene su calificación de “B” mientras está un 1% más cerca de la “A” tan deseada, según la Dra. Debra Pace.

Osceola County, FL - The Annual State of Education Address was held Tuesday, February 5th at the Osceola County School for the Arts. The address began with a heartwarming video of young students K-12 telling attendees the reason they enjoy school and how teachers individually showed them they care. This year, the district maintains its “B” letter grade while being 1% closer to the desired “A”, according to Dr. Debra Pace. The graduation rate has been steadily increasing since 2009 and is now at an 89.3% and continues to be above the state average. Osceola ranks 14th out of 67 counties in education.

School Board Member Terry Castillo announced the four new voluntary Pre-kindergarten sites that were made to ensure children start kindergarten off strong in order to build a good foundation for their education. Kathleen Plinske, President of Osceola, Lake Nona, and Poinciana Campuses of Valencia College, talked about Dual Enrollment Program and how students

can obtain their AA Degree from Valencia College while having all their classes and books paid for by the high school. In three years, the percentage of high school students earning their AA with Valencia has increased to 320%.

Throughout the Education Address, all board members went live into five of their classrooms so that the 400 community members could see for themselves what extraordinary things kids were working on. Board member Clarence Thacker received a video call from a fifth grader asking for help while creating a code for his robot. To prove it, the district is providing professional development for certification requirements, working to strengthen the teacher mentoring program, and have also put in place new incentives and expectations for guiding students every day. With the help of extraordinary teachers and amazing principles, the commitment made to a great education for all, will continue to prosper.
