Orlando Hispanic Heritage News Municipio de Orlando celebra el Mes de la Herencia Hispana ofreciendo talleres virtuales gratuitos a la comunidad hispana Orlando, FL - El miércoles, 23 de septiembre, el municipio de Orlando celebró el Mes de la Herencia Hispana con la presentación del primero de tres talleres virtuales que se ofrecieron en la página de Facebook del municipio en español en donde se discutieron temas concernientes a la comunidad hispana.

“Como ciudad acogedora e inclusiva, estamos comprometidos a continuar celebrando nuestras diferencias y dedicando este mes a la rica y diversa cultura y herencia hispana”, dijo el alcalde de Orlando Buddy Dyer.

El tema de este año es “Hispanos: Siente orgullo de tu pasado y abraza el futuro”.

El tema exhorta a los residentes hispanos a sentir orgullo por su descendencia, herencia, cultura y nacionalidad hispana.

“Como hispano y nativo de la isla de Puerto Rico, me siento orgulloso de mis raíces que me enseñaron el verdadero significado de comunidad y servicio a los demás”, dijo el comisionado del Distrito 2 de la ciudad Tony Ortiz.

Municipality of Orlando celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month by offering free virtual workshops to the Hispanic community Orlando, FL - On Wednesday, September 23, the municipality of Orlando celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with the presentation of the first of three virtual workshops that were offered on the municipality's Facebook page in Spanish where issues concerning the Hispanic community were discussed.

“As a welcoming and inclusive city, we are committed to continuing to celebrate our differences and dedicate this month to the rich and diverse Hispanic culture and heritage,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

This year's theme is "Hispanics: Be Proud of Your Past and Embrace the Future."

The theme encourages Hispanic residents to take pride in their Hispanic descent, heritage, culture and nationality.

“As a Hispanic and a native of the island of Puerto Rico, I am proud of my roots that taught me the true meaning of community and service to others,” said City District 2 Commissioner Tony Ortiz.

Osceola News - To the Editor Por Viviana Janer Presidenta de la Comisión del Condado Osceola Como Presidenta de la Comisión del Condado Osceola, quiero que los lectores sepan que Osceola se preocupa profundamente por los afectados por COVID-19.

Mientras las personas pueden distanciarse socialmente, usar una cobertura facial y seguir las directrices de los CDC para detener la propagación de la enfermedad, la Comisión del Condado está tratando de ayudar en el frente financiero con tres programas: Asistencia de Alquiler e Hipoteca, Desvío de Desalojo y Asistencia de Servicios Públicos.

Los programas de Asistencia de Servicios Públicos y Desvío de Desalojo son nuevos. A medida que crece el alcance del desastre financiero generado, también lo hace nuestra asistencia.

By Viviana Janer Osceola County Commission Chairwoman As the Chairwoman of the Osceola County Commission, I want to let readers know that Osceola cares deeply for those impacted by COVID-19.

While people can social distance, wear a face covering and follow CDC guidelines to stop the spread of the disease, the County Commission is trying to help on the financial front with three programs – rental and mortgage payment assistance, eviction diversion and utility assistance.

The Utility and Eviction diversion programs are new. As the scope of the financial disaster spawned grows, so too does our assistance.

Funded by Federal CARES Act money, the Eviction Diversion program is designed to help Osceola County tenants who are in imminent danger of being evicted. It helps prevent a landlord from initiating the eviction process by paying rent that is due. It will keep an eviction from appearing on the tenant’s permanent record, which is important months from now as people look at housing options.

This program should give renters a chance to get back on their feet, while not punishing landlords by providing a short-term flow of income so they don’t lose their investments.

Landlords and tenants with pending court action will receive letters from the County. To be considered eligible for the program, applications must be completed by both.

This federal eviction protection order is not automatic, and you must submit a special document provided by the CDC. The Utility Assistance program will provide funding to residents who have not been able to pay electric, gas or water bills. Participants must be an Osceola County resident, show proof of impact from COVID-19 and have a past due electric, gas or water bill. There is no cap on the amount an applicant is eligible to receive. The program is open only to residential properties.

Additionally, the County opened another round of housing assistance to pay rent or mortgage obligations. Information on all the programs is available at http://housing.osceola.org.

Osceola School District hosts drive-in event for families of English Language Learners As outlined under the goal of Community Engagement and Governance in its district Strategic Plan, the Osceola County School Board continues to prioritize providing families opportunities to acquire information, knowledge, and skills to support their children's education at home and at school. Families of English Language Learners in the Osceola School District are invited to participate in an innovative free DriveIn event hosted by the Multicultural Education Department on October 15, 2020, at Flora Ridge Elementary, located at 2900 Dyer Blvd. in Kissimmee, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Information for parents of English Language Learners will be featured on a 30-foot outdoor movie screen.

El 20 de agosto de 2020, los Servicios de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de los Estados Unidos (USCIS por sus siglas en inglés) adoptaron una decisión emitida por la Oficina de Apelaciones Administrativas (AAO por sus siglas en inglés) que sostiene que un beneficiario del Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS por su siglas en inglés) que ha recibido autorización para viajar al extranjero y que posteriormente vuelve a entrar a los Estados Unidos utilizando un documento de viaje, retoma el mismo estatus migratorio que tenía en el momento de la salida, a menos que el extranjero sea inadmisible por ciertos motivos penales o de seguridad nacional u obtenga una visa de inmigrante o temporal y lo presenta para su admisión a los Estados Unidos.

Antes de que se adoptara la regulación antes mencionada, un beneficiario de TPS que inicialmente ingresó a los Estados Unidos sin inspección y luego viajó al extranjero utilizando un documento de viaje emitido por el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional, podía usar la última entrada a los Estados Unidos para satisfacer el requisito de elegibilidad para la aplicación de residencia que es que la persona haya sido "inspeccionada y admitida.” El subdirector de regulaciones de USCIS, Joseph Edlow,

The USCIS Deputy Director for Policy Joseph Edlow said “Temporary Protected Status is by its very nature temporary; it should not provide a path to lawful permanent resident status or citizenship.

Misinterpretation and inconsistent application of this law has previously allowed those pathways for alien TPS beneficiaries.

This was a mistaken distortion of what Congress intended when creating this temporary program.”

USCIS will only apply this policy prospectively to TPS beneficiaries who departed and returned to the United States after Aug. 20, 2020, the date of the AAO’s adopted decision.

Therefore, this decision does not affect TPS beneficiaries who adjusted status to lawful permanent residence under past practice and/or prior guidance or who have pending applications for adjustment of status.

Jiménez Potenza – El Osceola Star New York, NY - Con 22 votos a favor, tres en contra y 22 abstenciones, la ONU aprobó que se sigan investigando las violaciones a los Derechos Humanos en Venezuela.

Más de 50 países firmaron el proyecto que se presentó este martes ante el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de la ONU para que el organismo continúe investigando las violaciones a los derechos humanos en Venezuela y condene al régimen de Maduro.

Voto y posición de cada país con respecto a la violación de los derechos humanos en Venezuela

A lo largo del documento, los países firmantes manifestaron su alarma por distintos aspectos específicos de la crisis “civil, política, económica, social y cultural” que tiene lugar en el país: la situación en el arco minero del Orinoco y los abusos de las fuerzas de seguridad, la falta de independencia de poderes -que redunda en una imposibilidad de garantizar la transparencia de los procesos electorales- y las necesidades humanitarias de una vasta porción de la población.

Esto implica que se renueva por dos años el mandato de la Misión de Determinación de Hechos que investiga los crímenes de lesa humanidad en el país caribeño; se condena las violaciones a los DDHH ya comprobadas; y se llama a celebrar elecciones libres.

The ONU approved the investigation of human rights violations in Venezuela

By Marco A. Jiménez Potenza – El Osceola Star New York, NY - With 22 votes in favor, three against and 22 abstentions, the UN approved the investigation of human rights violations in Venezuela.

More than 50 countries signed the project that was presented on Tuesday before the UN Human Rights Council for the body to continue investigating human rights violations in Venezuela and condemn the Maduro regime.

Throughout the document, the signatory countries expressed their alarm about different specific aspects of the “civil, political, economic, social and cultural” crisis that is taking place in the country: the situation in the Orinoco mining arc and the abuses of the security forces, the lack of independence of powers - which results in an impossibility of guaranteeing the transparency of electoral processes - and the humanitarian needs of a vast portion of the population.

This implies that the mandate of the Fact-Finding Mission that investigates crimes against humanity in the Caribbean country is renewed for two years; the violations of human rights already verified are condemned, and it is called to hold free elections.

Examples of some of the Codes the Code Board hears would be; occupational license violations, building code, fire, mechanical, electrical and plumbing codes, zoning and sign ordinance violations and other various codes and ordinances. The Code Board is comprised of seven (7) members who shall be residents of the County and who shall be appointed by the Board of County Commission on the basis of experience or interest in the subject jurisdiction of the Board. Pursuant to Florida Statute the membership of the Code Board shall, whenever possible, consist of the following: Architect, Business Person, Engineer, General Contractor, Subcontractor or Realtor. The Code Enforcement Board typically meets the third (3rd) Wednesday of every month at 3:00pm in the Board Chambers located on the fourth (4th) floor of the Administration Building.

Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Citizens Advisory Task Force (2 Positions) - At-Large – The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Citizen Advisory Task Force increases public awareness of the function of the community Development Block Grant Program and the types of assistance available to low and moderate income residents.

In this role, the Task Force reviews and provides input on the Action Plan, Consolidated Plan, citizen Participation Plan and Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing. The Task Force also provides input on the implementation of community projects.

Fifty-one percent of Task force members must meet the low and moderate income definition (households at or below 80 percent area median income). The committee meets twice a year at the Osceola County Human Services office in the Beaumont Complex, 330 N. Beaumont Avenue, Kissimmee, FL 34741 Tourist Development Council (1 Position) – Seat 8 - Non-Collector – The Tourist Development Council is composed of nine members who shall be appointed by the Board of County Commissioners. Each member shall strive to promote and support the industry of Tourism in Osceola County. Seat 8 - Non-Collector shall be a person who is involved in the tourist industry and who has demonstrated an interest in tourist development, that isn’t an owner or operator of motels, hotels, recreational vehicle parks or other tourist accommodations in the county and subject to the tax hereby levied. The Council meets quarterly on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Council members serve for staggered terms of four (4) years.

Modified face coverings order remains for Osceola Osceola County, FL – Wearing face coverings remains mandatory for Osceola County residents, even though action by Gov. Ron DeSantis last month removed any individual fines or penalties associated with COVID-19.

Commissioners on Monday unanimously approved an update of the County’s order so that it aligned with the Governor’s mandate. The emergency ordinance had been in place since July 20 and states that “every person working, living, visiting, or doing business in Osceola County is required to wear a cloth facial covering consistent with the current CDC guidelines while in any public place.”

Monday’s update includes a new exception for those participating in sporting events so that “persons actively engaged in competition on the field of play during organized sports events” do not have to wear a face covering.

Existing exemptions include: • Persons under the age of two years; and • Persons for whom a face covering would cause impairment due to an existing health condition; and • Persons working in a profession who do not have any face to face interactions with the public; and • Persons working in a profession where use of a face covering will not be compatible with the duties of the profession; and • Persons exercising, while observing social distancing in accordance with the CDC guidelines.

A previous April 1 order from the Emergency Policy Group that mandated face coverings without a penalty was also rescinded by Monday’s Board action.

Robin has been with the Chamber since 2002.

Kissimmee Chamber President/ CEO John Newstreet said, “Through the pandemic the Kissimmee Chamber staff have worked extra hard to help businesses and their employees. Robin Hughes has brought many of these people into the family and was eager to check on and help them where she could and that is just one example of her dedication over the 18 years and counting she has given to the Chamber.”

To date, 17 companies have received grants totaling $49,000. Andre Anderson, Community Development Director for the city, told Council members that many of the 59 who applied were ineligible due to having also received CARES Act funding.

“We request that you remove the restriction and allow those individuals that were automatically denied, to be able to reapply,” Anderson said during the Sept. 24 Council meeting. “They would still have to demonstrate that they are not duplicating the use of those funds. If they received PPP (payroll protection plan) funding for payroll, for example for February through April, they couldn’t use the City money for that same timeframe. They’d have to use it for a different timeframe or a different purpose.”

Anderson noted 25 of the applicants that were denied didn’t meet other grant criteria, such as being in the city limits and having been in business for three years or more. He also noted that some had been denied for being nonresponsive.

Councilman Dave Askew asked for clarification about those who had previously applied. Anderson explained that any business that was denied is welcome to reapply, but they must reapply, and it doesn’t automatically mean they will get funded.

“As long as everyone understands that, it’s fantastic,” Askew said. “If you applied before, apply again. Keep it simple.”

Anyone who is six months old or older should get a yearly flu vaccine.

Disney - Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrando #HispanicHeritageMonth - Una conversación con Susana Tubert El 15 de septiembre marcó el comienzo del Mes de la Herencia Hispana, un momento para que celebremos las historias, culturas y contribuciones de los latinos, tanto dentro como fuera de nuestra empresa. Uno de nuestros talentosos miembros del elenco que juega un papel fundamental en estos esfuerzos es Susana Tubert, directora creativa de Disney Parks Live Entertainment, que tiene su sede en Disneyland Resort.

Celebrating #HispanicHeritageMonth – A Conversation with Susana Tubert September 15 marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a time for us to celebrate the stories, cultures and contributions of Latinx individuals both inside and outside of our company. Walt Disney created Disneyland as a destination for everyone to feel welcomed.

One of our talented cast members who plays a pivotal role in these efforts is Susana Tubert, Creative Director, Disney Parks Live Entertainment, who is based at the Disneyland Resort. We were fortunate to spend some time catching up with Susana about her work and some of the ways that her team has developed cultural celebrations that our guests know and love in our parks.

Can you tell the Disney Parks Blog readers more about your background and career journey? We know you’ve had an impressive career prior to joining Disney!

Thank you for that! Yes, one could say that my career has been a long and winding road. And yet, when I recently celebrated my seventh anniversary as Creative Director it became clear to me that all of the career opportunities I experienced prior to joining Disney prepared me for this wonderful leadership role at the Disneyland Resort.

I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I began studying dance when I was five years old and piano by age seven. Moreover, I was greatly influenced by my grandmother Cecilia, an accomplished artist, to whom I must credit her fearlessness for inspiring my own!

In 1980, shortly after my family and I immigrated to the U.S., I settled in New York City with big dreams of becoming an actress, but the roles for Latinx performers back then were even more limited than they are now. So, while the search for my big break-out role continued, I trained extensively as an actor while I performed in Off-Off Broadway shows, bilingual TV commercials, and in original musicals which I wrote and composed for an experimental children’s theater company.

When it was time to draw the final curtain on TeatroStageFest, I chanced upon an online description of a job opening at Disney that would mark the beginning of a new chapter in my life. Four interviews later, I went from the Big Apple to the Happiest Place on Earth! I relocated to California to step into my role as Creative Director at Disneyland Resort and, as of this year, also at Walt Disney Imagineering.

We’d love to hear more about your role as Creative Director, Disney Parks Live Entertainment and what it entails.

As Creative Director, I oversee development of new entertainment concepts and shows, from the page to the stage. My role is to guide and inspire teams of hugely talented show directors, writers, designers, choreographers and composers on show content, design and execution of sets, lighting, audio, costumes, video mapping and music production.

What are some of the new experiences you have led while in your role?

The team and I are really proud of the work we did on “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” and other experiences for Pixar Fest, as well as the Frozen Fun celebration, Pop-Up Disney! A Mickey Celebration in the Downtown Disney District, Disney Princess Breakfast Adventures at Napa Rose and of course, our contributions to the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration, to name a few.

In your role, you’ve led the Disney Parks Live Entertainment team in the development of new cultural celebrations that reflect the diverse guests who visit and love our parks. Can you share how you and your teams combine Disney stories with cultural relevancy to reach park audiences?

Over the past few years, Disney has produced an array of wonderful new movies and TV shows that reflect diverse cultural narratives — from “Black Panther” and “Mulan” to “Moana” and “Coco,” to name a few. What a perfect time to celebrate the universal values of these Disney stories and characters that have been traditionally underrepresented!

Orlando Magic recognized as a 2020 Diversity in Business Award winner by Orlando Business Journal Orlando, FL – The Orlando Magic were recently chosen as an honoree for the Orlando Business Journal's 2020 Diversity in Business Awards for its efforts to create a more diverse and inclusive community and workplace. The OBJ hosted a virtual celebration on Oct. 8 to honor the 12 companies and individuals who were selected.

The Magic's vote campaign continues through a multi-pronged approach. Those efforts include a dedicated web page (www.OrlandoMagic.com/vote); Vote.org partnership; PSAs; voter toolkits; player and coach involvement; social media education campaign; opening Amway Center as early voting/voter registration location; and events to encourage voter participation.

The Magic's other efforts recently have included creating an internal social justice task force under the direction and support of the Magic ownership group, the DeVos family and Magic CEO Alex Martins. The task force is comprised of staff members from the Magic and its affiliates (Orlando Solar Bears, Lakeland Magic and Magic Gaming) to guide the team on how to do even more on issues of diversity, inclusion and equity, while developing programs to initiate substantive change in both the organization and the community.
