Kissimmee, FL - Osceola Regional Medical Center anunció que se ha ganado la certificación Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific por sus programas de cánceres de mama, pulmón y cáncer colorrectal en su unidad de oncología. El programa de certificación específica de la enfermedad está diseñado para evaluar los programas clínicos a través del cuidado continuo.

El hospital fue sometido a una rigurosa revisión directa en septiembre del 2016, en la que expertos de la Comisión Mixta evaluaron el cumplimiento de los estándares nacionales de atención de enfermedades específicas, las guías de práctica clínica y las medidas

de desempeño. La certificación se otorga por un período de dos años.

Osceola Regional Medical Center Awarded Disease-Specific Certification From The Joint Commission Kissimmee, FL – Osceola Regional Medical Center announced today that it has earned The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Certification for its breast, lung, and colorectal cancer programs in its oncology unit.

The Disease-Specific Certification program is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care.

The hospital underwent a rigorous on-site review in September 2016, in which Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards, clinical practice guidelines and performance measures. The certification is awarded for a twoyear period.

"Osceola Regional Medical Center has continually demonstrated a high level of care for patients in its oncology unit,” said Wendi J. Roberts, RN, executive director of certification programs for The Joint Commission. “We commend the hospital’s staff for providing patients in their community with excellent oncology care.”

• Dormir bajo un mosquitero cuando el aire acondicionado o la protección en las habitaciones no

estén disponibles o si va dormir al aire libre.

Cool Weather is No Reason to Stop the Fight Against Mosquitoes Osceola County, FL – Cool weather is nice for taking a stroll through the neighborhood, doing chores around the house, catching a ballgame -- or even exploring the great outdoors.

But the drop in humidity and temperature doesn’t mean that the threat of disease-carrying mosquitoes has decreased.

The county has launched a “Team Buzzoff” awareness campaign that reached thousands at the recent Discover Osceola event. Standing water after Hurricane Matthew raised the number of mosquitoes, and only a good freeze will even slow the onslaught.

Just like Smokey the Bear urges prevention of forest fires and Uncle Sam encourages military service, those joining Team Buzzoff are asked to take the fight to their yards and neighborhoods with “Dump and Drain” tactics.

Steps to control mosquitoes inside and outside your home include: • Using screens on windows and doors. Repairing holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outside.

• Using air conditioning when available.

• Sleeping under a mosquito bed net if air conditioned or screened rooms are not available or if sleeping outdoors.

• Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out items that hold water, such as tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpots, or trash containers. Check inside and outside your home. Mosquitoes lay eggs near water.

Meanwhile, the news has been filled with reports about the Zika virus. And while Osceola hasn’t had any locally transmitted cases, there are many other diseases to worry about, including Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Dengue Fever and West Nile Virus.

It’s important to help prevent the spread of these diseases, some like EEE can be deadly to humans. And this week the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it's too late to stop Zika from spreading throughout the United States. Among the suggestions for more government action, a need for outreach to citizens to educate them about the looming threat was also emphasized by CDC director Tom Frieden said this week.

Pop-Up Civics Quiz Show Coming To Discovery Intermediate On Thursday, November 3, a turquoise 18-wheel semi-trailer from the Florida Department of Education, in conjunction with the Florida Lottery, will pull in to the side lot of Discovery Intermediate in Kissimmee for the Just Read, Florida! “Pop-Up Quiz Show” Civics event. Four teams of middle school students from Discovery Intermediate School will be challenged to answer standards-based Civics questions on stage in a Quiz

Show format. Teams are currently being formed with auspicious names such as "Freedom Writers", "Children of Liberty", "Independence", and the "Roman Empire."

The Pop-Up Quiz Show tour is held in recognition of Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!, which takes place on January 23-27, 2017.

Kissimmee Utility Seeks Entries in Contest Kissimmee Utility Authority invites students to use the power of art to promote electrical safety in the utility’s 23rd annual calendar art contest. The annual talent hunt is open to Osceola County students enrolled in kindergarten through grade 5, including public, private, and homeschooled students.

Students are asked to use crayons, markers, paints, or computer-generated graphics to depict an electrical safety message in their entry. Each student who submits an entry will be honored with a letter of appreciation, a copy of the calendar, and a chance to win a Shingle Creek family kayaking adventure. The twelve winning students will have their artwork featured in the 2017 calendar

and receive a $150 cash prize. A grand winner, selected from the 12 winning students, will have his/her name and artwork affixed to a KUA bucket truck for one year, and be featured on the calendar cover. To further encourage participation, the grand winner’s school will receive $750 in art supplies, and the school with the most total entries in the contest will receive $500 in art supplies.

Recibió su carta de inducción FORT MYERS, FL – El 31 de octubre de 2016, el Gobernador Rick Scott otorgó a más de 100 veteranos en la Armada de la Guardia Nacional del Ejército de EE. UU. en Fort Myers con el Premio Gobernador al Servicio del Veterano por su servicio a la Florida y la nación.

KUA Board Welcomes New Member, Elects Officers Kissimmee, FL - The Kissimmee Utility Authority board of directors on Oct. 5 welcomed its newest board member and held its annual election of officers.

Manuel “Manny” Ortega, a career law enforcement professional, took the oath of office to begin a five-year term on the volunteer utility board. He is the third Hispanic to serve on the board.

In the election of officers, Reginald Hardee was reelected chairman of the board. Hardee is technology director for Florida's Turnpike Enterprise. The board also reelected Jeanne Van Meter as vice chairman. Kathleen Thacker was elected secretary and Ethel Urbina as assistant secretary.

The utility's five-member board of directors sets policy direction for the utility. Specifically, the board approves annual budgets, sets rates and approves major purchases. The board also directs a general manager who is responsible for day-to-day operations of the utility.

Having these W-2s and 1099s earlier will make it easier for the IRS to verify the legitimacy of tax returns and properly issue refunds to taxpayers eligible to receive them. In many instances, this will enable the IRS to release tax refunds more quickly than in the past.

The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, enacted last December, includes a new requirement for employers. They are now required to file their copies of Form W-2, submitted to the Social Security Administration, by Jan. 31.

The new Jan. 31 filing deadline also applies to certain Forms 1099MISC reporting non-employee compensation such as payments to independent contractors.

In the past, employers typically had until the end of February, if filing on paper, or the end of March, if filing electronically, to submit their copies of these forms. In addition, there are changes in requesting an extension to file the Form W-2. Only one 30-day extension to file Form W-2 is available and this extension is not automatic. If an extension is necessary, a Form 8809 Application for Extension of Time to File Information Returns must be completed as soon as you know an extension is necessary, but by January 31. Please carefully review the instructions for Form 8809, for more information.

Though the IRS issues more than nine out 10 refunds in less than 21 days, some returns are held for further review.

HHSFMO - Becas / Scholarship 17th Annual Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Awards Ceremony Pays Tribute to Outstanding Hispanic Students several of the scholarships were our future of tomorrow.

Orlando, FL – The Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund of Metro Orlando (HHSFMO) recognized the outstanding academic achievements of 22 Hispanic students during its 17th annual awards ceremony at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

All of the scholarship recipients are of Hispanic descent and enrolled in postsecondary institutions in Central Florida.

More than $160,000 in funds were awarded, bringing the organization’s total awards up to 294 scholarships and $1,300,000 granted since HHSFMO’s inception more than 16 years ago.

Participants of the luncheon had an opportunity to hear from Mateo Raul Magdaleno,

author and Chief Education Officer for the IDQ Inc., as the event’s Keynote speaker. Mateo Raul shared his story of how he overcame a challenging childhood by focusing on what he could do to help others and ensure that he has a purpose in this life. “Mateo Raul’s ability to speak to the challenges of life, but also encourage people to not let obstacles prevent you from being successful was exactly what our scholars needed to hear as some begin and some are well into the completion of their post-secondary education” said Maritza Martinez, HHSFMO Chair and associate vice president of community relations for the University of Central Florida.

Two students, Carmen Lopez Robledo and Zulma Echevarria, received a scholarship to complete a year at Florida Technical College.

We have a huge responsibility to positively impact and strengthen our regional economy and our community and supporting that which makes Central Florida great” said Maritza.

Condado Osceola, FL - El 1 de noviembre, aproximadamente a las 9:04 p.m., agentes del Sheriff del Condado Osceola respondieron al motel Budgetel ubicado en el 2295 E. Irón Bronson Memorial Highway. 2 Suspects Arrested for Child Neglect Osceola County, FL – On November 1 at approximately 9:04 p.m., Osceola County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Budgetel motel located at 2295 E. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway. Upon arrival, they spoke with an employee who indicated one of the guests staying at the motel left two small children in their room alone and this was not the first time this has occurred. Deputies located a 5-year old and 6-year old in one of the motel rooms. They spoke with the children who indicated their mother left to go to the store. Deputies

observed the room to be in disarray with limited food for the children.

Approximately an hour later, Dobbzianne Douett and her boyfriend Rosandre Barrett returned to the motel.

They cooperated with the investigation and based on their statements and the evidence, Douett and Barrett were arrested for Child Neglect and booked into the Osceola County Jail. The children were placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

The investigation began on November 1 at approximately 5:03 p.m. when deputies responded to 601 Royalty Court in reference to an occupied burglary. When they arrived, they observed a large altercation several doors down involving 10-15 teens. One teen, Elias Rosario-Torres attempted to flee the area after seeing the deputies.

He was located a short distance away at a family member’s residence.

After speaking with all of the individuals involved, deputies determined Torres was involved in the altercation and at one point, pulled out a handgun and fired shots. Two other teens, Edgar Santiago and Yancarlo Santiago-Lopez

attempted to kick down the door at 601 Royalty Court where in order to instigate a fight. Based on the witness statements and the evidence, three suspects were arrested and booked into the Osceola County Jail.

New MiLB Team Name Revealed as Florida Fire Frogs the team announced Kissimmee, FL – Going headto-head with our ‘coqui’ is not for the faint of heart. That’s right.

It’s official. Central Florida’s new Minor League Baseball team today announced it’s new name – the Florida Fire Frogs. The name is a result of hundreds of submissions over the summer during the team’s “Name the Team” contest.

A glowing red frog, ablaze with flames, is the centerpiece of the team’s new identity, surrounded with traditional lettering to make up the team’s primary mark. The team’s colors are fire red, navel orange, and golden sun, and fans will find a variety of alternative logos on the team's website and merchandise store, including the horned “Bull Frog,” a fun nod to the community’s rodeo heritage.

The team also announced that Karah Morrison and Steven Strickland were the winners of the team's Name the Team contest over the summer and each won two season tickets for the 2017 season.

News of the team’s new name is just the latest in a series of announcements. Just last month,

a fouryear affiliation agreement with the Atlanta Braves. The Player Development Contract will remain in effect through the 2020 season. Additionally, the team released its 2017 Florida State League (FSL) schedule and announced the sale of season seat memberships. The team’s inaugural season at Osceola County Stadium will start April 6 against the Daytona Tortugas.

The schedule features 70 home games and an Independence Day fireworks spectacular on July 4. Game times for all 2017 games and promotional-themed nights will be released at a later date.

Membership packages include full season (70 games), half season (35 games), partial (15 games) and mini (7 games). Full season packages start at $350 and are available by calling 321697-3156. Entretenimienmto / Entertainment Laura y Mario tuvieron sus diferencias en el primer en vivo de La Banda Dos jueces de La Banda, Mario Domm y Laura Pausini no se pusieron de acuerdo durante la evaluación de ciertas presentaciones en el primer en vivo de La Banda. Dijeron el siguiente: Mario comenta a la concursante Sofía Delfino que lo puede hacer mejor que hay cosas que le gustaron mucho y otras que no tanto. Laura le dice a Verónica Rodríguez que se divirtió cantando le ha gustado mucho la forma en que tomó control de cuerpo con la canción, un poco más que con la misma voz desafortunadamente.

Mario dice que le gustó mucho, ya que ella está con otras seis bailarinas, a lo que Laura añade que estas son profesionales y ella todavía no lo es.

Laura and Mario Had Differences of Opinion on the First Live Show Premier of La Banda Two of the La Banda judges, Mario Domm and Laura Pausini did not agree during the evaluation of certain presentations in the first live La Band show. Mario comments that performer Sofia Delfino could do better, that during her performance some things he liked and some he did not. Laura differed by saying that she did not concord with Mario’s comment and she tells Sofia that her performance on the chorus was magical. Also stating, visual effects were wonderful but without a beautiful voice it does not make any effect.

During Taishmara Rivera’s performance, Laura mentioned that she can educate her voice

more, while Mario said she has a good voice tone, made a good vocal performance, and that she managed the chorus, which was difficult, very well.

Laura mentions to Veronica Rodriguez that it looks like she was having fun during her dance and vocal performance; unfortunately she felt more of her dance rather than her voice. Mario loved her performance, but criticized her dance performance because he compared her to the other 6 dancers, to what Laura replied “they are professional dancers, that Veronica is just starting to dance.”
