Celebran el quinto evento anual de Bodas en San Valentín en la Corte del Condado Osceola Darwin y Reinalis Torres Condado Osceola, FL El martes 14 de febrero de 2017, el Secretario de la Corte del Condado Osceola fue el anfitrión del quinto evento anual de bodas de San Valentín en la histórica Corte del Condado Osceola, ubicada en 3 Courthouse Square, Kissimmee, Florida 34741.

Las primeras treinta parejas registradas disfrutaron de una ceremonia de matrimonio realizada por el Honorable Armando Ramírez.

Para acomodar la preferencia del idioma, el Sr. Ramírez realizó una ceremonia en inglés y otra en español. La ceremonia en inglés se celebró a las 10:00 de la mañana y la ceremonia

en español se celebró a las 2:00 p.m.

Osceola County Clerk of Court Fifth Annual Valentine Wedding Event Osceola County, FL - On Tuesday, February 14, 2017, the Osceola County Clerk of Court hosted the Fifth Annual Valentine Wedding Event at the Osceola County Historic Courthouse, 3 Courthouse Square, Kissimmee, Florida 34741. The first thirty (30) pre-registered couples enjoyed a free marriage ceremony performed by the Honorable Armando Ramírez.

To accommodate language preference, Mr. Ramírez performed a ceremony in English and another in Spanish. The English ceremony celebrated at

10:00 a.m. and the Spanish ceremony celebrated at 2:00 p.m.

Proper registration included completion of the license application process and payment of applicable license fees. The $30.00 marriage ceremony fee was waived for the participating couples. A reception with wedding cake provided immediately following each ceremony.

La ciudad anuncia cierre temporal en E Monument Avenue Kissimmee, FLContratistas junto a la ciudad de Kissimmee cerraron la Avenida E Monument a la altura Pleasant St. en la mañana del 13 de febrero de 2017, como parte de una construcción asociada con el proyecto de renovación de “Toho Square” La intersección está programada para

permanecer cerrada hasta marzo 6 de 2017.

City announces temporary closure of E. Monument Avenue Kissimmee, FL. – Contractors with the City of Kissimmee will close E. Monument Avenue at the Pleasant Street intersection on the morning of February 13, 2017, as part of the construction associated with the Toho Square redevelopment project. The intersection is scheduled to remain closed until March 6, 2017.

Signage indicating road closures and the official detour routes will be posted on the affected roadways. The official detour plan is attached to this news release.

Osceola School District to Hold Voluntary Prekindergarten Registration Roundups Osceola County parents with a child who will be four years old by September 1, 2017, are invited to register him or her for the Osceola School District's 2017-2018 free Voluntary Prekindergarten Program (VPK). VPK classrooms offer highquality programs that include high academic standards, develop mentally- appropriate curricula, manageable class sizes, and qualified teachers.

The Osceola Center for Early Learning will host a series of VPK Registration Roundups.

Parents must first start by getting a Certificate of Eligibility by logging on to https:// vpkcp.floridaearlylearning.com. If you do not have internet access, help will be provided at registration.

Eventually, Rebecca gets her service dog to run around in the grass and play. The effect is immediate, as both she and Tron switch from serious to happy as if someone has flicked on a light switch.

Kissimmee, FlEl Departamento de Parques y Recreación de la ciudad de Kissimmee está ofreciendo un campamento “Camp Discovery Spring Break” para niños de las edades de 5-13 años. El campamento será en “Berlinsky Community House”. Tendrá un costo de $100 por niño por los 6 días que incluirá excursiones, transportación, y supervisión desde las 7:00 a.m. a 6:00 p.m; los campistas deberán llevar almuerzo y bocadillos cada día.

Homer y Mary Lewis abrieron su tienda “Lewis Music” el 3 de octubre de 1973. Ellos abren su tienda debido a que Homer estaba cansado de tener que ir a Orlando a comprar cosas para su banda. City Offering "Camp Discovery" for Spring Break Lowry Park Zoo (3/14) and Regal Kissimme, FL- The City of Kissimmee Parks & Recreation Department is offering "Camp Discovery Spring Break Camp" for children of ages 5-13 years.

Camp will be held at the Berlinsky Community House. The fee is $100 per child for all 6 days and includes admission to field trips, transportation, and supervision from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; however, campers must bring a packed lunch and snacks each day.

Field trip destinations include Crayola Experience (3/10), Tampa

Cinemas to watch “Beauty and The Beast” rated PG (3/17).

Registration deadline is Friday, March 3; registrations taken after this date are subject to availability and will be charged a $10 late fee.

Fuego en la maleza Kissimmee, FL- El domingo, 12 de febrero de 2017 a las 4:30 p.m. el departamento de bomberos de Kissimmee acudió a un incendio en la maleza en el área de atrás de la Escuela Elementar Highlands.

El incendio no afectó la escuela.

Se estableció un equipo entre los bomberos de Kissimmee, bomberos de Osceola y la policía de Kissimmee. Un total de 25 acres fueron consumidos por el incendio.

El incendio llegó a 15 pies de altura.

Nadie resultó herido durante el incidente. La calle “Temple Grove” fue desalojada por precaución.

Brush fire Kissimmee, FL- On Sunday, February 12 at 4:30 p.m. Kissimmee Fire Department responded to a brush fire located in an area behind Highlands Elementary School. The fire did not affect the school.

A unified command was established between Kissimmee Fire, Osceola Fire and Kissimmee Police. A total of 25 acres burned.

The fire came within 15 feet of structures. No one was injured

during the incident. Temple Grove Subdivision was evacuated as a precaution. Homeowners have been allowed back into their homes.

The initial investigation has revealed that the fire was set accidentally by children playing with a lighter. The children and their parents will be attending Juvenile Fire Setters Program.

City recognizes Lewis Music Store with Prestigious Ruby Award Kissimmee, FL. – The Kissimmee City Commission recognized Lewis Music Store, for its 43 years in business, with the prestigious “Ruby Award” at their City Commission meeting. The Ruby Award is presented to companies that have been in business within City limits for over 40 years (ruby anniversary year).

Homer and Mary Lewis opened Lewis Music Store on October 3, 1973. They started the store because Homer was tired of having to drive to Orlando to buy things for his band. At the time, there was no music store in Kissimmee. When asked the secret of their success, current and second generation store owner Paul Lewis stated “our company motto has always been to treat customers like we’d like to be treated”.

Lewis Music store has influenced the music industry by having taught students that are now artists and

many former students that have gone on to become music teachers themselves. Through the years, they have seen our Central Florida footprint change, including the arrival of Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. As a company, they are proud to have been a part of the lives of those musicians that learned how to play in their shop and now work professionally in our world-renowned hospitality industry.

The Ruby Award program is part of the City’s Economic Development retention efforts. The City of Kissimmee celebrates Lewis Music Store for their 43 years in business and thanks the three generations of family members that have worked in the store for serving as a music resource to our Central Florida community.

Congreso / U.S. Congress Congresista Soto presenta su primer proyecto de ley para ayudar a estudiantes STEM Washington, D.C.- El Congresista Darren Soto presentó su primer proyecto de ley ante la Cámara de Representantes, el cual proveerá un alivio financiero a los estudiantes que desarrollen una carrera en el campo de STEM, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

La pieza legislativa, ASPIRE, (American Science Principal and Interest Reduction and Employment Act) busca enmendar el "Higher Education Act of 1965" de manera que provea una reducción del 25% del total del principal de los préstamos estudiantiles universitarios. Esto aplica también a préstamos que hayan sido financiados por los padres. La reducción entraría en vigor una vez el estudiante se gradúe de esta carrera.

El Congresista Eric Swalwell, coauspiciador del proyecto de ley dijo: “El campo del STEM es importante porque impulsará la economía del siglo 21. Congressman Soto files his first bill to assist STEM students Washington, D.C – U.S. Representative Darren Soto (FL09) introduced his first bill, which provides financial relief to students who complete a degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) field.

The ASPIRE Act (American Science Principal and Interest Reduction and Employment Act) would provide a 25% reduction in federal student loans for students who graduate with a degree in a STEM field, including loans taken out

by Congressman Eric Swalwell signed onto the bill as a co-sponsor. “STEM fields are an important driver of the 21st century economy. With millions of young people and families in financial quicksand from mounting student debt, we must do what we can to relieve that weight and not deter students from pursuing degrees in fields that will progress innovation,” said Swalwell.

“Thanks to Congressman Soto to help support the young people who are building the future of our nation.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), STEM jobs pay almost twice the average wages of all jobs. And BLS projects that there will be 9 million STEM jobs by 2022.

Oak St Eastbound

Construction for E. Oak Street Phase I semi complete, Phase II to begin Kissimmee, Fl. – On Wednesday, February 15, 2017, the eastbound travel lanes of E Oak Street from Lawrence Silas Boulevard to E Vine Street will reopen. The westbound travel lanes of E Oak Street from E Vine Street will open and allow access up to the driveway of Heritage Park Offices. The remaining section of the westbound travel lanes, up to the intersection of Lawrence Silas Boulevard, will open in approximately four to six weeks once final intersection improvements are made. The reopening of this section marks the completion of the first phase for the Oak Street Widening Project.

February 15, 2017, will also mark the beginning of road closures for the second phase of the project. All eastbound and westbound travel lanes will close on E Oak Street between

N Main Street and Lawrence Silas Boulevard until the completion of phase two.

The Oak Street widening project is a $9.5 million-dollar project geared towards creating a more effective transportation system in the City of Kissimmee. The Oak Street Widening Project will add additional driving lanes, new bicycles lanes, wider sidewalks, bricked crosswalks, a traffic signal at Lawrence Silas Boulevard, and new landscaping. The entire project remains on schedule and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2018.

Servicios Públicos ha participado en el concurso anual “Drop Savers” del Florida Section of the American Water Works Association (FSAWWA) desde el 2010. Public Services has participated in the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association’s (FSAWWA) “Drop Savers” annual poster contest since 2010 and is again sponsoring this year’s contest for St. Cloud students in five divisions: • Division 1: Kindergarten and first grade • Division 2: Second and third grade • Division 3: Fourth and fifth grade • Division 4: Middle school; grades six, seven and eight • Division 5: High school; grades nine, 10, 11 and 12 “Students are encouraged to create a poster that depicts a waterconservation idea in slogan form, drawing form or both forms,” said Public Services Operations Director Chris Fasnacht. “Our younger generation has a unique opportunity to express their thoughts on the importance of water conservation in daily routines and their water-conservation level of awareness. Education and awareness at an early age are important to help foster a lifelong conservation ethic.”

Each poster entry should be on an 8 ½-inch by 11-inch white drawing

paper in a landscape or portrait format. Students must create their posters individually and must use crayons, coloring pencils, paint or markers. Posters displaying the use of highlighters, photos, computer graphics and trademark/copyright material will be disqualified. All wording on the poster must be easily readable. The entry form must be filled completely and legibly and securely taped to the back of each poster.

Posters/entry forms should be submitted to the student’s teacher by March 10. Homeschooled students may submit their posters/entry forms to City of St. Cloud, Attn: Lisa Marion, 1300 9th St., St. Cloud, FL 34769 and submissions must be received

by March 10. Each poster will be judged on message, creativity and originality by an independent panel.

The demonstrations will be held: • Feb. 25, 3:00 p.m. - Community Unity event at Hopkins Park (620 E. 17th St.) • March 4, 12:00 p.m. - St. Cloud Life event in front of City Hall (1300 9th St.) “These demonstrations are great awareness tools because they show the effectiveness of a working sprinkler system and a working smoke alarm,” said SCFR Fire Marshal Richard Tonks. “The live-burn demonstration is also an eye-opener for the public.

In a safe environment, they see how rapidly a fire spreads. In a controlled setting, we start off by burning a small room with no sprinkler system and a

crew extinguishing it. We then set a fire to an identical room, but this one is equipped with a working sprinkler system. The public sees the vast difference between the two rooms and this helps them realize why they need to ensure they have working smoke alarms and sprinklers in their homes.”

SCFR personnel have conducted these side-by-side live-burn demonstrations annually in the past three years and have seen how effective the demonstrations have been by the looks of amazement on the people’s faces and their comments after each demonstration.

Everyone is invited to stop by to witness the demonstrations, learn about the importance of having working smoke alarms and sprinkler systems and ask questions about escape plans and other household fire-safety concerns.

Valencia College 50º Aniversario Valencia College inicia la celebración de su 50º aniversario estudiantes de minorías.

Orlando, FL - El Valencia College ha iniciado la celebración de su 50 aniversario este mes - y planea una serie de eventos para conmemorar el aniversario del colegio.

Desde el principio, Valencia era el pequeño colegio que podía. Aunque la legislatura estatal aprobó la creación de una universidad comunitaria pública en el Condado Orange ya en 1961, las luchas políticas internas en Orlando detuvieron el progreso por más de seis años.

Valencia College 50th Anniversary Valencia College kicks off year-long celebration of its 50th Anniversary Orlando, FL – Valencia College is launching its 50th anniversary celebration this month – and plans a year-long series of events to commemorate the college’s anniversary.

From the start, Valencia was the little college that could. Although the state legislature approved the creation of a public community college in Orange County as early as 1961, political infighting in Orlando halted the progress for more than six years.

Finally, in Feb. 1967, a college president was hired and he was given six months to create a college from scratch. In August 1967, Valencia officially opened, holding classes in 20 portables set up behind Mid-Florida Tech on Oak Ridge Road.

From that inauspicious beginning, Valencia has grown from 500 students that first semester to more than 60,000 students today.

The college has grown physically too – from those 20 portables on a temporary campus to a college system of five campuses, with a sixth (Poinciana) being built.

“Great institutions don’t just happen; they are intentionally and carefully built,” said Valencia College President Sandy Shugart, who has served as the college’s president since 2000. “I am continually moved by the importance of the individual contributions of many, many people to founding, building and nourishing Valencia. None of the founders had anything to gain personally from the creation of Valencia, but they were willing to suffer public controversy and invest thousands of hours of personal time to bring the vision to fruition.”

Since its inception, Valencia College has been recognized as a national leader among two-year colleges. In 2001, Time Magazine named Valencia one of the nation’s best schools at helping first-year students excel. In 2007, The New York Times named Valencia one of the best community colleges in the nation. And in 2011, Valencia was the first to win the prestigious Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.

In 2006, Valencia established its groundbreaking, guaranteed transfer agreement with the University of Central Florida, known as DirectConnect to UCF. Today, more than 25 percent of UCF graduates are Valencia graduates who transferred to UCF. And in 2013, Valencia’s groundbreaking transfer partnership with UCF, DirectConnect to UCF, was named the nation’s most successful program at helping Hispanic students earn their college degrees.

And, in 2016, Valencia was ranked fourth in the nation for the number

of associate degrees it awarded – 51 percent of which were earned by minority students.

In 2011, the college entered a partnership with UCF to provide bachelor’s degrees in targeted workforce areas. As a result, Valencia Community College changed its name to Valencia College.

To celebrate the college’s anniversary, here are some of the public events Valencia has planned series: • 50th Anniversary Showcase - April 11, East Campus - A showcase of arts programs at Valencia’s East Campus, 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail.

• 50 Years, 50 Trees - April 2017 - In a celebration timed to Arbor Day and Earth Day, Valencia will commemorate its 50th anniversary with the planting of 50 trees.

• “Taste for Learning” Fundraising Gala - May 20, Rosen Shingle Creek Resort - The Valencia Foundation

will celebrate the college’s 50th anniversary at its annual fundraising gala. All proceeds go to student scholarships.

• Opening of Valencia’s Poinciana Campus - August, Poinciana Valencia will open the new Poinciana Campus, which features a 60,000 square-foot building, with 12 classrooms, a teaching kitchen, a science lab, two computer labs, library, tutoring center, indoor/outdoor café and a multipurpose room • Summer of Love 1967 Album Fall 2017 - Music faculty and staff will record an album of hit songs from 1967, to be released on a commemorative vinyl edition and as a free digital download.

Here are a few interesting facts about Valencia history: • Valencia was one of the last community colleges created in the state of Florida – because many of Orlando’s power brokers backed private, segregated Orlando Junior College and a decade-long political stalemate ensued.

• The college – then known as Valencia Junior College – opened its doors in 20 portables in a field behind Mid-Florida Tech (on Oak Ridge Road). Faculty jokingly called the temporary campus “Shoebox University.”

• With the name Orlando Junior College already taken, the new college staff considered naming the college for a type of citrus grown locally. They debated Parson Brown, Hamlin and other citrus names, but finally settled on Valencia, an orange cultivar which accounts for more than 50 percent of all the oranges grown in Florida.

• Within three years, the college grew from 500 students to 3,000 – and, in 1971, built its Kirkman Road campus in what was then the middle of an orange grove. East Campus opened on Econlockhatchee Trail in 1975. Osceola Campus moved from storefronts to its current location in 1997 and the Winter Park Campus opened in 1998.

Lake Nona Campus opened in 2012 and the new Poinciana Campus is slated to open in August 2017. Also this fall, Valencia will open its new, state-of-the-art Film, Sound and Music Technology Building on East Campus.

Orlando also shot an impressive 8 of 14 from the 3-point line. Tuesday, the Magic traded away Serge Ibaka to the Toronto Raptors for Terrence Ross and a 2017 first round draft pick. Ibaka will be a free agent this summer and it was unlikely he would re-sign with the Magic. With the addition of Ross, the Magic have added depth to their wing.

Ross is averaging 10.4 points and 2.6 rebounds in his fifth season

with Toronto. This is the first season of his 3-year deal paying him $30 million through 2018/2019 season.

Ross did not dress for Wednesday night’s game against the Spurs but is expected to play Thursday night.

Orlando looked more off than usual at home Wednesday night. They struggled to get the ball moving, were careless with 17 turnovers, and forced shots. The 107 to 79 loss was hard to watch.

The Magic will have a break this weekend though due to the AllStar weekend. Aaron Gordon will be representing the Magic for the second year in a row at the Slam Dunk Contest. Orlando’s next three games are at the Amway Center.

Orlando will host the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday February 25.
