Government Launches Health Insurance Marketplace Educational Tools Orlando, FL - The Obama administration today kicked off the Health Insurance Marketplace education effort with a new, consumerfocused HealthCare.gov website and the 24-hours-a-day consumer call center to help Americans prepare for open enrollment and ultimately sign up for private health insurance. The new tools will help Americans understand their choices and select the coverage that best suits their needs when open enrollment in the new Health Insurance Marketplace begins October 1. “The new website and toll-free number have a simple mission: to make sure every American who needs health coverage has the information they need to make choices that are right for themselves and their families or their businesses,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “The re-launched Healthcare. gov and new call center will help consumers prepare for the new coverage opportunities coming later this year,” said Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Marilyn Tavenner. “In October, HealthCare.gov will be the online destination for consumers to compare and enroll in affordable, qualified health plans.” HealthCare.gov is the destination for the Health Insurance Marketplace. Valencia College Ranks 4th in Nation for Number of Associate Degrees Awarded Orlando, FL - Valencia College ranks fourth in the nation for the number of associate degrees awarded to students, based on a ranking of almost 3,000 colleges and universities published this week by Community College Week.
To compile its annual Top 100 rankings, the editors of Community College Week used data from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics and focused on degrees conferred during the 2011-12 academic year. In that year, Valencia awarded 7,974 associate degrees, including 3,674 earned by minority students.The number of degrees Valencia awarded in 2011-12 jumped by 20 percent over the previous year, 2010-11. “Valencia’s continued focus on student success is paying off,” said Dr. Sanford C. Shugart, Valencia College president. “For the past decade, the college has targeted its efforts
toward helping all students succeed. These rankings underscore the role that Valencia plays as the first step to college for many students in Central Florida.” Also noteworthy, the college ranks fifth in the nation in the number of degrees awarded to Hispanic students and seventh in the number awarded to African-Americans. The college also ranked second in the nation – out of 5,485 colleges and universities and other educational institutions -- in the number of one-year certificates awarded. Aside from the number of overall associate degrees conferred, Valencia ranked high in the number of associate degrees awarded across a number of academic disciplines: second in the number of degrees awarded in general studies and the humanities; 22nd in registered nursing; 29th in business degrees, 33rd in engineering technologies and engineering-related fields; 40th in health professions; and 40th in criminal justice. Valencia offers four types of degrees: Associate in Arts (A.A.), Associate in Science (A.S.), Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees. The A.A. degree parallels the first two years of a four-year bachelor’s degree.

By Eugenia Hernández Washington, D.C - On Thursday June, 27, The Senate finally gave approval to a roughly 1,200-page bill that promises to remake the U.S. immigration laws for the first time since 1986, creating a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented residents, while stronger security along the Mexican border. Senators passed the legislation -initially drafted by the four Democrats and four Republicans in the chamber’s so-called “Gang of Eight” -- by a 68-32 vote. Fourteen Republicans joined a united Democratic caucus in supporting the bill, which is backed by the White House and has the potential to become the crowning legislative achievement of President Barack Obama’s second term. The vote caps more than six months of tedious and contentious bipartisan negotiations between Democrats and Republicans from across the country with various political strengths and ties to key interest groups. Now the bill will pass for its discussion to the House of Representatives. “The House is not going to take up and vote on whatever the Senate passes,” John Boehner (R-Ohio) told reporters. “We’re going to do our own bill, through regular order.” “For any legislation, including a conference report, to pass the House, it’s going to have to be a bill that has the support of a majority of our members,” Boehner said, referring to the members of the Republican caucus. GOP opponents of the Senate bill said there was no way that bill would make it in the House.

Osceola Student Named National Merit Scholar Osceola County, FL - Robin Schiro, a Harmony resident and a senior at Gateway High, has been named among one of 2,500 high school seniors in the nation as a top National Merit Scholarship winner. Of the 8,300 overall National Merit Scholarship winners, this is the highest honor offered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Schiro, the only student in Osceola County to earn the distinction this year, was chosen among the 2,500 top Merit Scholar designees from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, all of whom were judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The Finalists were selected
from more than 1,500,000 National Merit Scholarship entrants - all high school students across the nation who took the PSAT as sophomores in 2011. Judges further evaluated each student’s academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests (PSAT and SAT); contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official to select the winners. The National Merit Scholarship Program has honored Schiro for his exceptional academic ability and his potential for success in rigorous college studies. Schiro earned the highest SAT score in Osceola County
history, obtained a perfect score on the mathematics portion of the FCAT as both a freshman and sophomore, and has been named as a National Advanced Placement Scholar. Other academic achievements include being named a Sunshine State Scholar in Math and Science, a PRISM Sustaining Scholar for Outstanding Science and Math, and a PRISM Second Year Scholar for Outstanding Science and Math. He made the all “A” Honor Roll all four years in high school, and graduated with an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma as a valedictorian of Gateway High School on May 23, 2013. In addition, Schiro was involved in numerous high school clubs and
organizations, including the Gateway High Ambassador Program, the Octagon Math Team, the Spanish Honor Society (served as President), FRC Robotics Teams, and the Tennis Club/Team. He also made time for a great deal of community service, including providing volunteer service to St. Cloud Regional Medical Center, helping prepare food for Thanksgiving meals at Cornerstone Church, coaching elementary school children in creating a competitive FIRST Lego League robotics team, and caring for horses in Harmony. Schiro plans to attend the Burnett Honors College at the University of Central Florida on a $68,000 scholarship and will study computer science.

Florida Technical College - Noticias / News FTC honra a su equipo de estilistas por sus logros en el Orlando Premier Show Kissimmee, FL - El equipo de estilistas del Florida Technical College (FTC) en Kissimmee compitió recientemente en el Orlando Premiere Beauty Show, uno de los más grandes espectáculos de belleza a nivel internacional que se llevó a cabo del 31 de mayo al 2 de junio en el Orlando Convention Center. Los estudiantes ganaron 7 premios, dos de los cuales fueron primeros lugares. Uno de sus estudiantes, Eduardo Villanola, fue invitado para competir con el Equipo Olímpico de los EE.UU., un equipo elite de estilistas, en una competencia mundial que se llevará a cabo en Frankfurt, Germany. Kissimmee, FL - Florida Technical College (FTC) Style Team recently competed at the Orlando Premiere Beauty Show, one the largest International Beauty Trade shows in the nation held from May 31 to June 2 at the Orlando Convention Center FTC students won 7 Awards, 2 of which was at 1st place. Also, one of the students, Eduardo Villalona, has been invited to compete with an elite team of stylists in Frankfurt, Germany. This important achievement was celebrated at FTC Kissimmee, by his Executive Director Gabriel Garces, who held and Awards Ceremony at the Campus on Tuesday, June 25. Florida Technical College can proudly say that their faculty is teaching their students to excel above and beyond their knowledge and skill set. Part of preparing them for the future in the beauty industry was giving them
the opportunity to participate in the Orlando Premier Beauty Show. They start training in February with Prof. Ocasio, trainer and coach of the dream team (as they named the competitors). The students designed and trained in each category, it was a lot of hours of training and dedication, but it was worth it. They winners were: Eduardo Villalona won 1st place on Creative Style and 1st place on Hair by Night; Victor Vera won 2nd place on Bridal Long Hair; Elliot Febo won 4th place on Fantasy Hair; Annabel Reynoso won 4th place on Bridal Long Hair; Sally Torres won 2nd place on Hair Cutting; and Paulina Henao won 4th place on Hair Cutting. For the students that participate in this type of activity it is not only a competition it is a life changing and unique experience that will give the student the confidence, experience, and exposure in a competitive industry.

Deputies Recognized as Law Enforcement Officers of the Year Osceola County, FL - Osceola County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brad Butler and Deputy Scott Koffinas were recognized by the Florida State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police as the 2013 Law Enforcement Officers of the Year. Each year, the Florida State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police accepts nominations from police departments and sheriff’s offices across the state to recognize law enforcement officers for exemplary
service, valor and dedication to the profession and the community they serve. Last week at their annual meeting, Florida State Lodge President James Preston presented the award to Sgt. Butler and Deputy Koffinas during the Lodge’s general session held in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Sgt. Butler and Deputy Koffinas were selected as the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office nomination based on
a life saving incident that occurred in January of this year. First to arrive at a structure fire, Sgt. Butler and Deputy Koffinas rescued a 50year old man from a smoke filled apartment. The man had a previous brain injury which made it difficult for him to communicate and it was apparent he would not have been able to escape the apartment which was on fire without assistance. The man was treated at the hospital for
smoke inhalation and has since fully recovered from the incident. In February, Sheriff Hansell also presented both deputies with the Sheriff’s Office Life Saving Award for their heroic actions. Sgt. Brad Butler has been a member of the Sheriff’s Office since 2003 and currently works in the Patrol Division. Deputy Scott Koffinas started at the Sheriff’s Office in 2006 and works in the Special Operations Division.

2 Suspects Arrested for Publix Burglary Osceola Coynty, FL - On June 20, Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Rayniel Gutierrez-Vera and Jorge Perez-Borrego and charged them with Unoccupied Burglary, Possession of Burglary Tools, Grand Theft, Loitering or Prowling and Resisting Without Violence. In addition, Borrego was charged whith Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer and Vera was charged with Operating a Commercial Vehicle without a License. The investigation began on June 20, at approximately 12:28 a.m., when deputies responded to Publix located at 2338 E. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee in reference to a suspicious incident. A witness observed two men, later identified as Borrego and Vera, loading pallets into a box truck behind the business.
When the men saw the witness they left the area in the direction of Partin Settlement and Neptune Road. Patrol deputies located the truck on Partin Settlement and attempted to make a traffic stop. The truck pulled over but when deputies attempted to approached the vehicle, Vera and Borrego fled on foot. Borrego was located a short distance away and placed into custody. Vera attempted to hide under a vehicle parked at a residence in the area, but deputies located him and placed him in custody. Deputies discovered the stolen pallets on the truck. Based on the information and evidence, Borrego and Vera were arrested and taken to the Osceola County Jail.
