Arte / Art Osceola Arts Kissimmee, FL- Osceola Arts y Kissimmee Mainstreet están muy orgullosos de presentar el Festival de Arte de Osceola 2014 ahora en su año número 49. El festival es una muestra de arte con jurado de artistas que tendrán lugar el 15 y 16 de noviembre en el hermoso centro histórico de Kissimmee. El evento gratuito de dos días cuenta con más de 100 artistas de todo el país, entretenimiento en vivo, un concurso de tiza en la acera, actividades para niños, y los camiones de alimentos cada vez más populares. Y lo mejor de todo, el evento se centra a lo largo de las calles de ladrillo con encanto de la histórica zona de tiendas y restaurantes de Kissimmee. El artista del cartel presentado este año es nativo de la Florida, Brandi Renee con su pieza técnica mixta titulado "Realizaciones." Renee tendrá su obra de arte con tema de naturaleza en exhibición y para la venta en el festival y también firmará un número limitado de posters a disposición del público. Osceola Arts Kissimmee, FL- Osceola Arts and Kissimmee Mainstreet are excited to present the 2014 Osceola Fall Art Festival now in its 49th year. Gobernador recibe en La Fortaleza al Alcalde de la Ciudad de Nueva York Puerto Rico - El gobernador Alejandro García Padilla recibió hoy en La Fortaleza al alcalde de la ciudad de Nueva York Bill De Blasio. El alcalde neoyorquino destacó el liderato del gobernador García Padilla para encaminar al país a pesar de los grandes retos fiscales que enfrenta. “Es un honor estar aquí con el gobernador. Siento mucha admiración por la manera en la que él ha lidiado con los retos que ha enfrentado en los pasados meses. Su liderato ha permitido construir el camino hacia el futuro. El gobernador y yo compartimos los mismos valores de progreso”, dijo el alcalde. De Blasio señaló que comparte con el gobernador la visión de invertir en la educación desde la edad preescolar como herramienta de futuro para el país. El alcalde de Blasio tiene como uno de sus proyectos principales el desarrollo de escuelas preescolares en todos los distritos de la ciudad. De igual forma, el gobernador García Padilla impulsa la iniciativa PreK-16 que busca que los niños comiencen
la escuela en edad preescolar y apoyarlos durante el camino para garantizar que terminen sus estudios universitarios. Así también conversaron sobre la iniciativa de la administración de García Padilla de otorgar licencias de conducir a inmigrantes sin importar su estatus migratorio. De Blasio expresó que las coincidencias con las iniciativas de García Padilla hacen algo natural que mantengan el trabajo conjunto de cara al futuro. Otras dos escuelas del condado Osceola clasificaron entre las primeras 20 escuelas en el Reto de Verano de Scholastic: la Escuela Elemental Flora Ridge clasificó en la posición número diez en el mundo con 3,837,367 minutos leídos y la Escuela Elemental Reedy Creek clasificó en la posición número trece en el mundo con 3,334,409 minutos leídos. Estas tres escuelas de Osceola formarán parte de la lista con las otras primeras 20 escuelas en el Libro de Record Mundial de Scholastic 2015.
Carta del Presidente de la Junta Escolar Mientras nuestro Distrito Escolar trabaja hacia la visión de sobrepasar a todos los otros distritos escolares en el Estado, me siento orgulloso de compartir con ustedes que hemos sobrepasado a la Nación. La Asociación Nacional para la Educación de Niños y Jóvenes sin Hogar (NAEHCY, por sus siglas en inglés) ha seleccionado al Distrito Escolar de Osceola como único destinatario del prestigioso Premio de NAEHCY 2014 por Servicio Distinguido y Liderazgo en sus excelentes esfuerzos de proveer un servicio a los niños, jóvenes y familias sin hogar de nuestra comunidad. Este premio Nacional destaca el enfoque del Distrito Escolar en asegurar que cada niño y joven que no tenga hogar sea exitoso en la escuela, desde la infancia hasta una educación superior. Para poder reducir la brecha de rendimiento entre los estudiantes sin hogar y estudiantes en viviendas permanentes y elevar los niveles de rendimiento de todos los estudiantes, durante el verano 2014 el Programa de Familias en Transición (F.I.T., por sus siglas en inglés) del Distrito implementó el “Proyecto 100,000 Libros” para promover la alfabetización en lectura. Letter from the School Board Chairman As our school district works towards the vision of outperforming all other school districts in the state, I am proud to share that we have outperformed the nation. The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) has selected the Osceola School District as the sole recipient of the prestigious 2014 NAEHCY Award for Distinguished Service and Leadership for its outstanding efforts to provide service to the homeless children, youth, and families in our community. This national award highlights the school district's focus to ensure that every child and youth experiencing homelessness is successful in school, from early childhood through higher education. In order to narrow the achievement gap among homeless students and permanently-housed students and to raise all students' achievement levels,
the district's Families In Transition (F.I.T.) program implemented a "100,000 Books Project" to promote reading literacy this past summer. The goal of this project was to build a consistent, year-round culture of reading, especially for underprivileged students. The F.I.T. Program partnered with Superintendent Melba Luciano as she challenged students to read 12 million minutes over the summer as part of the Superintendent's Summer Reading Challenge. Through an outside vendor, Osceola School District's Special Programs Department purchased 25 large pallets of gently-used chapter books for $5,000, which was paid for from a donation from Walt Disney Resorts. With over 8,500 hours of volunteer service from community members and 21 different community agencies, the books were cleaned and bagged so that every Osceola student in kindergarten through Grade 3 was able to receive five books to keep.

For the district's 4,500 homeless students in many cases, these books started a student's home library as no books were in the home, and allowed them to participate in the Superintendent's Summer Reading Challenge like permanently-housed students with books of their own.
3,837,367 minutes read, and Reedy Creek Elementary ranked number thirteen in the world with 3,334,409 minutes read. These three Osceola schools will be listed with the other Top 20 schools in the 2015 Scholastic Book of World Records.
The 100,000 Books Project was a huge success. The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge encouraged children to read books and log their minutes as they read for the world record during the summer to help avoid the “Summer Slide”, the loss of skills that can happen while out of school. Kids from 7,285 schools worldwide read and logged an impressive 304 million minutes, breaking last year’s world record of 176 million minutes. Boggy Creek Elementary, one of our schools in Osceola County, earned the number one spot in the world with students reading close to 11 million minutes alone. Flight testing will determine whether flexible trailing-edge wing flaps are a viable approach to improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce noise generated during takeoffs and landings. The Adaptive Compliant Trailing Edge (ACTE) project is a joint effort between NASA and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), using flaps designed and built by FlexSys, Inc., of
through the Air Force’s Small Business Innovative Research program, FlexSys developed a variable geometry airfoil system called FlexFoil that can be retrofitted to existing airplane wings or integrated into brand new airframes. During the initial ACTE flight, the experimental control surfaces were locked at a specified setting. Different flap settings will be employed on subsequent flights to collect a variety of data demonstrating the capability of the flexible wings to withstand a real flight environment. Launch teams rehearse fueling, countdown The launch teams that will work together Dec. 4 to launch the Orion spacecraft practiced the countdown today that will include fueling the core stages of the Delta IV Heavy rocket that will lift Orion on its unmanned flight test. Working in control rooms at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, countdown operators followed the same steps they will take on launch day. The simulation also allowed controllers to evaluate the fuel loading and draining systems on the complex rocket before the Orion spacecraft is placed atop the launcher next week.

That portion of the test will give engineers what they need to make sure the heat shield can withstand the searing conditions of bringing back astronauts from missions into deep space destinations including, eventually, Mars.

City of Kissimmee Offers Turkey Camp for Students to field trips and transportation, Kissimmee, FL - The City of Kissimmee is calling all kids! It’s time to get out the house and enjoy some fun, because good times are back at our annual Turkey Camp. Join us for 3 days of activities and planned field trips from Monday, November 24 to Wednesday, November 26. The City of Kissimmee is offering Turkey Camp for Kindergarten through 8th grade students. Camp will be held at the Berlinsky Community House located at 300 East Monument Avenue at the Kissimmee Lakefront. The fee is $65 per child for all 3 days or $25 per day. Sun exposure By Fred Cicetti [This is the second of two columns about sun exposure.] Ultraviolet (UV) rays, an invisible component of sunlight, can cause skin damage, cataracts, wrinkles, age spots, and skin cancer. These rays also impair the skin’s immune system. UV rays can hurt you on cloudy as well as sunny days. UV rays also bounce off surfaces of the ocean, sand, snow and cement. One of the surest ways to reduce your exposure to UV rays is to stay out of the sun when it is the strongest. Those times in North America are between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the late spring and early summer. Other ways to protect yourself are to wear protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt, and long pants. You should use a sunscreen rated at SPF 15 or more. Eye doctors recommend wraparound sunglasses that provide 100 percent UV ray protection. You should also pay attention to the UV Index developed by the National Weather Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. This index assesses risk of overexposure to UV rays. The UV Index is calculated daily and is reported by the press. It can be found at: http://www.epa.gov/ sunwise/uvindex.html, where you can plug in your own zip code to find out the index rating in your area. The following are the index levels: 2 or less: Low danger for the average person 3 to 5: Moderate risk of harm 6 to 7: High risk of harm. 8 to 10: Very high risk of harm. 11+: Extreme risk of harm.
It is possible to go outside when the UV Index is 11 or higher but you must be sure to take every step possible to protect yourself—sunscreen, hats, long sleeves, sunglasses, the works. Not everyone reacts to the sun in the same way. The level of danger calculated for the basic categories of the UV Index are for a person with Type II skin. The following are the skin types: I—Always burns, never tans, sensitive to sun exposure II—Burns easily, tans minimally III—Burns moderately, tans gradually to light brown IV—Burns minimally, always tans well to moderately brown V—Rarely burns, tans profusely to dark VI—Never burns, deeply pigmented, least sensitive What is a suntan? When UV rays penetrate the skin's inner layer they generate the production of melanin—a dark pigment. The melanin eventually moves toward the outer layers of the skin and becomes visible as a tan. Every time you tan, you damage your skin and this damage accumulates over time. There is no safe tan. What some call a base tan may, actually, increase the chances you'll get a burn, because you're likely to stay out longer without properly protecting your skin. You should stay away from tanning beds and sunlamps because they emit UV rays that can cause serious long-term skin damage. The amount of the radiation produced during indoor tanning is similar to the sun’s production and in some cases may be greater. Many tanning salons are unregulated. Its decor, in sober tones of earth and dark burgundy wood, make you feel comfortable and at home; reaching an environment where you leave behind the "stress" of everyday life and initiate what will most likely be a lasting and memorable experience to the palate. Detectives arrestan a sospechosos de robo armado en Applebee’s
Kissimmee, FL - Detectives de la Policía de Kissimmee han detenido a la sospechosa implicada en un homicidio que ocurrió el 10 de noviembre. Aproximadamente a las 2:00 a.m., los oficiales de la Policía de Kissimmee respondieron al 541 Lake Tivoli Blvd., Apartamento D, en referencia a un residente que requería de atención médica. Tras su llegada los oficiales encontraron a Larry Lee Fryar, de 57 años de edad, con lesiones que amenazaban su vida por un apuñalamiento. Fryar fue transportado a un hospital local donde fue declarado muerto. A través del curso de la investigación, los detectives fueron capaces de identificar a Amanda Mandee López, de 26 años de edad, como una persona de interés. López se encontraba en la estación de autobuses de Orlando tratando de subir a un autobús con destino a Nueva York. López fue detenida

Kissimmee Police Arrest Woman for Homicide Kissimmee, FL - Kissimmee police detectives have arrested the suspect involved in a homicide that occurred on November 10. At approximately 2:00 a.m., Kissimmee police officers responded to 541 Lake Tivoli Blvd., Apartment D, in reference to a resident requiring medical attention. Upon arrival officers found 57-year-old Larry Lee Fryar with life threatening injuries from a stabbing. Fryar was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Through the course of the investigation, detectives were able
to identify 26-year-old Amanda Mandee Lopez as a person of interest. Lopez was located at the bus station in Orlando attempting to board a bus bound for New York. Lopez was detained by members of the Orlando Police Department. Kissimmee detectives transported Lopez to the Kissimmee Police Department for questioning where she cooperated with the investigation. Amanda Mandee Lopez is charged with first degree murder of her ex-boyfriend Larry Lee Fryar. She was booked into the Orange County Jail on a no bond status.

11:21 a.m. when Osceola County Sheriff's deputies responded to Applebee's Restaurant located at 4759 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the employees who indicated an unknown male entered the restaurant, restrained six employees with zip ties, demanded money and fled the area. The employees were not injured and no customers were inside the establishment at the time of the incident. Deputies with the assistance of K-9 Units and the Aviation Unit searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect. After further investigation, Ramdawar and Arroyo were identified as suspects. Detectives also recovered the money, the weapon and other evidence which implicated the suspects. Based on the investigation, they were arrested and booked into the Osceola County Jail.

The announcement marks Redding's first call-up to the U-20 team. The Oviedo, Fla. native, who was signed as Orlando City's first-ever Major League Soccer (MLS) Homegrown player earlier this year, has been a fixture in the national team system, representing the U-14, U-15, U-17 and U-18 teams. Despite being only 17 years old, Redding appeared in 15 matches for the Lions during the 2014 season, logging over 1,000 minutes. The center-back gained valuable experience competing at the
professional level on a weekly basis, including appearances against premier sides such as A.S. Roma and São Paulo F.C. Turner was called up by Head Coach Tab Ramos for the U-20 USMNT's camp in September but was unable to attend due to an injury. El Magic por fin gana tres partidos en la temporada Orlando, FL - La primera victoria llegó finalmente contra los 76ers de Filadelfia el miércoles pasado. La victoria de dos puntos impulsó su confianza suficientemente como para que pudieran repetirla contra los Timberwolves de Minnesota. Fue Evan Fournier quien lideró al equipo en anotaciones con 20 pero fueron los novatos Aaron Gordon y Elfrid Payton quienes hicieron enormes impactos. Gordon anotó 6 de sus 17 puntos en el tiempo extra logrando sus dos intentos de tres puntos. Magic finally win three this season Orlando, FL - The first win came down to the wire against the Philadelphia 76ers last Wednesday. The two point victory boosted their confidence enough for them to repeat it against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Orlando 97 - 95 New York able to hold their lead till the fourth. The Raptor’s reserves came in and outscored Orlando 32 to 17 to win 104 to 100 over the Magic. Tobias Harris made a significant impact with 23 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists but it was Fournier who led in scoring with 24 points. Channing Frye, who had his best game since being signed to Orlando, finished with 5 3-pointers and 19 points.
The winning streak would come to an end once Orlando made their way to Brooklyn. The Magic were out rebounded and out played in the paint by the Nets. Nik Vucevic played an outstanding third quarter, scoring 17 of his 27 then. But it wasn’t enough to stop Brooklyn from pulling away in the fourth and winning 104 to 96.
On Wednesday night, Orlando played in New York on the tail end of a back-to-back. After a tough loss, Orlando was looking to grab the win. Orlando played controlled and held the lead through the first half. Mid-way through the third, New York turned it on and had the Magic trailing by one halfway into the fourth quarter. With Carmelo Anthony in foul trouble and forced to sit for a few minutes, Orlando took advantage to take the lead and extend it. Evan Fournier had a career high game with 28 points and 4 steals. Vucevic added 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Magic. Payton dished out 8 dimes while Harris had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Orlando picked up their third win this season with a 97 to 95 victory over New York.

It was Evan Fournier who led the team in scoring with 20 but it was rookies Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton who made huge impacts. Gordon scored 6 of his 17 points in overtime making both of his three-point attempts. Payton, who is proving to be a consistent playmaker, ended with four assists and 15 points.
