The high cost of post-secondary education has been a barrier that has caused many Hispanic students to be unable to reach their goals and complete a degree. But they need to know that there are many options available for them including grants, student loans and work study programs, all of which can be accessed after completing the FAFSA. Florida Technical College News Estudiante de FTC se libera de la guerra caminando Orlando, FL - Ricky Cardona, un estudiante de 33 años de Florida Technical College, camina ocho horas todos los días. No lo hace como parte de un riguroso plan de entrenamiento físico, aunque sí ha rebajado 15 libras. Cardona recorre la Florida, de los Everglades a Pensacola, para honrar a los soldados que no regresarán de los conflictos bélicos y para crear conciencia sobre los cientos de miles de veteranos afectados por el Síndrome de Estrés Post Traumático (PTSD, por sus siglas en inglés). Durante su niñez en Deltona, Ricky admiraba la carrera militar de su padre, el boricua Rick Cardona, Sr., y soñaba con seguirle los pasos. Hace cinco años hizo precisamente eso y fue enviado a Irak poco después. A pesar del entrenamiento recibido, y a que se sentía emocionalmente fuerte, el conflicto dejó huellas profundas en él. “Perdí a dos amigos que eran como mis hermanos,” dijo Ricky, quien pasó por Lake Mary la semana pasada como parte de la caminata en la que recorre el estado de sur a norte. “Lo mantuve encerrado dentro de mí por mucho tiempo.” Determinado a no ceder a la desesperanza, Ricky buscó ayuda profesional y se matriculó en el programa de Ciencias Policíacas (Criminal Justice) de FTC. La institución es parte del programa federal Yellow Ribbon que adiestra a

La organización provee a los peregrinos todo el equipo y apoyo logístico necesario, lo que incluye mochilas con paneles de energía solar para cargar teléfonos celulares, iPods, y otros artículos electrónicos pequeños. Daniel Parkinson, un veterano de Sarasota, acompaña a Ricky en su caminata. “La experiencia ha sido enriquecedora espiritualmente,” dijo Ricky. “Mientras más camino, más liberado me siento de las malas memorias.”

FTC Student ‘’Walks Off” the War Orlando, FL - Ricky Cardona, a 33-year-old Florida Technical College student, walks eight hours or so every day. This is not because of a rigorous fitness challenge or anything of the like. He is walking from The Everglades to Pensacola to honor fallen soldiers and those who had come home to relive the war every day because of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). While growing up in Deltona, Ricky admired his father’s military career and dreamed of following in his steps. Five years ago he did and was deployed to Iraq shortly after. Although he had trained and felt mentally strong, the war took a toll on Ricky, who came back home carrying harrowing images with him. “I lost two buddies who were like brothers to me,” said Ricky, who made it to Lake Mary last week as part of his trek across the Sunshine State. ‘’I kept all of that bottled up inside me for a long time.” Unwilling to give into despair, the 33-year-old sought help for his emotional wounds and registered at FTC’s Criminal Justice Program. The college participates in the federal Yellow Ribbon Program which retrains veterans so they may use in civilian life the skills acquired in the
military. But Ricky also wanted to do something for his fellow soldiers that would never have the opportunity to rebuild their lives the way he was. That’s when he heard of the Warrior Hike Organization, a group that supports veterans in long distance hikes as a way of therapy. All the walking is done in scenic nature trails. The organization provides hikers with all necessary equipment and logistical support for a few months in the trail, including solar panels for their backpacks to recharge small electronic equipment like iPods and phones. Ricky’s hiking companion is Daniel Parkinson, a veteran from Sarasota. “The experience has been very rewarding, “ Ricky said. “As the miles come in, the memories come off.” Camile Long, one of Ricky’s professors at FTC, checks periodically with Ricky while out in the trail. “FTC supports our veterans 100 percent,” Long said. “We recognize their sacrifices and valor and belief that they are an asset to our communities. We are committed to be part of their retraining so they may rejoin the labor market and have a bright future.” Ricky’s trek along the Florida Trail will finish in Pensacola in April.

Valencia to offer free tax preparation help Orlando, FL - Valencia College accounting students and professors will be offering free tax help to the public on Saturdays during February, March and April at the college’s East Campus. The volunteer tax preparers are IRS-certified and trained. The tax help is free and open to anyone, but preference will be given to senior citizens, the disabled and low-income individuals. The volunteer tax preparers will be e-filing (electronically filing returns) for free. The tax sessions will be held on selected Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Building 7, rooms 113 and 117 on East Campus. Osceola School District to hold voluntary prekindergarten registration roundups Osceola County, FL - Osceola County parents with a child who will be four years old by September 1, 2015, are invited to register him or her for the Osceola School District's 2015-2016 Voluntary Prekindergarten Program (VPK). Me parece que me estoy enfermando mucho últimamente y me preocupa que mi sistema inmunológico no esté funcionando bien. ¿Podría ser una razón? Un sistema inmunológico disminuido puede ser la causa de sus problemas. Vaya al médico para un chequeo y diagnóstico. El sistema inmunológico es una red de células, tejidos y órganos que trabajan juntos para defender el cuerpo contra los ataques de organismos tales como bacterias, parásitos y hongos que pueden causar infecciones. Las células que forman parte de este sistema de defensa son glóbulos blancos, o leucocitos. Las sustancias extrañas que invaden el cuerpo se llaman antígenas. No hay dos personas que tengan el mismo sistema inmunológico. Algunas personas parecen estar vestidas con un traje de armadura contra las infecciones, mientras que otros parecen caer ante cualquier microbio. Cuando se trata de gérmenes, envejecer tiene sus ventajas y desventajas. A medida que envejecemos, nuestro sistema inmunológico desarrolla defensas contra antígenos. When it comes to germs, getting older has advantages and disadvantages. As we age, our immune systems develop defenses against antigens. We acquire antibodies to the germs we’ve defeated in the past. Because of this phenomenon, adults tend to get fewer colds than children. Now for some of the bad news: * The thymus, which is located behind the breastbone, is one of the organs of the immune system. The thymus is where immune cells—white blood cells—called T lymphocytes (T cells) mature. The thymus begins to shrink when we are young adults. By middle age it is only about 15 percent of its maximum size. * Some T cells kill antigens directly. Others help coordinate other parts of the immune system. Although the number of T cells does not decrease with aging, T-cell function decreases. This causes parts of the immune system to
weaken and increases the risk for becoming ill. * Macrophages, which are white blood cells that ingest antigens, don’t work as quickly as they used to. This slowdown may be one reason that cancer is more common among older people. * There are fewer white blood cells capable of responding to new antigens. Thus, when older people encounter a new antigen, the body is less able to remember and defend against it. * The amount of antibodies produced in response to an antigen is less in older people, and the antibodies are less able to attach to the antigen. These changes may partly explain why pneumonia, influenza, infectious endocarditis, and tetanus are more common among older people and cause death more often. These changes may also partly explain why vaccines are less effective in older people. * Later in life, the immune system also seems to become less tolerant of the body's own cells. Sometimes an autoimmune disorder develops; normal tissue is mistaken for non-self tissue, and immune cells attack certain organs or tissues. Among the autoimmune disorders are: lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma and ankylosing spondylitis. * Diabetes, which is also more common with increasing age, can also lead to decreased immunity. There are immunizations that are important as we get older. Adult tetanus immunizations should be given every 10 years; a booster may be given sooner if there is a dirty wound. Your health care provider may recommend other immunizations, including Pneumovax (to prevent pneumonia or its complications), flu vaccine, hepatitis immunization, or others. These optional immunizations are not necessary for all older people, but are appropriate for some.

Cumbre en Asuntos de Puerto Rico Orlando, FL - La Cámara de Comercio Hispana del Área Metropolitana de Orlando (HCCMO por sus siglas en inglés) firmó un acuerdo de entendimiento con la Cámara de Puerto Rico del Sur de la Florida y la compañía Dynamic Community Development Corporation (CDC). Este acuerdo es en referencia a la Cumbre en Asuntos de Puerto Rico que se llevara a cabo el 14 y 15 de Mayo del año en curso. El propósito del mismo es desarrollar y fomentar un entendimiento mutuo y establecer una relación de negocios entre ambas cámaras, para expandir y fortalecer el desarrollo económico de pequeñas empresas. La Cumbre fue creada hace seis años por Dynamic Community Development Corporation, una organización 501 (c) 3 sin fines de lucro para efectos Federales y
Estatales. El evento está dirigido no sólo hacia los puertorriqueños sino también hacia todos los segmentos que componen la diversidad étnica y cultural de la comunidad de Florida. This MOU is in reference to the Puerto Rican Summit, scheduled for May 14 & 15 of the current year. Its purpose is to develop and nourish a mutual understanding and establish a business relationship between the two Chambers, to support the growth and strengthen the economic development of small businesses. The Summit was created six years ago by Dynamic Community Development Corporation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. Hernández Mayoral expresó: “Me place informar que, una vez presentado el proyecto, continuaremos trabajando en conjunto para lograr que Puerto Rico sea incluido en el Capítulo 9 de la Ley de Quiebras, la que dispone el mecanismo necesario a nivel federal, para que la Asamblea Legislativa y el Gobernador de Puerto Rico puedan autorizar la restructuración de la deuda de una corporación pública.” En el Código de la Ley de Quiebras de Estados Unidos, las asambleas legislativas pueden autorizar a sus corporaciones o instrumentalidades

PRFAA welcomes all concerted effort to include Puerto Rico in Chapter 9 of the US Federal Bankruptcy Act Washington, DC – The Director of Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA by its Spanish initials) Juan Eugenio Hernandez Mayoral welcomed the draft amendment to the provisions of the federal Bankruptcy Act, which is expected to be filed this week in the House. Said project intends to include Puerto Rico by definition within the law, which would favor the public companies of the country of Puerto Rico. Hernandez Mayoral expressed: “I am pleased to report that, once the draft is completed, we will continue to work together to ensure that Puerto Rico is included in Chapter 9 of the Bankruptcy Act, which provides the necessary mechanism at the federal
level so that the Legislature and the Governor of Puerto Rico may authorize the debt restructuring of a public corporation.” In the Code of the Bankruptcy Law of the United States, legislatures may authorize their corporations or public instrumentalities to negotiate payments or restructure their debts under the provisions of Chapter 9 of the Code. The Law of Federal Bankruptcy excludes Puerto Rico for that purpose so this new project, which will be presented in the US House, would give the Legislature of Puerto Rico the same power that legislatures in the different States have when authorizing the debt restructuring of a public entity.

Sheriff & Police News Policía de Kissimmee arresta Ayudante de Maestro por abuso infantil Kissimmee, FL - Los detectives de la policía de Kissimmee arrestaron a un asistente de maestro de escuela elemental por abuso contra un menor. El 5 de febrero de 2014, aproximadamente a la 1:45 p.m., los oficiales respondieron a la escuela elemental Flora Ridge ubicada en el 2900 Dyer Blvd., en referencia a un informe de abuso infantil. Kissimmee Police arrest Teacher’s Aid for child abuse Kissimmee, FL – Kissimmee police detectives arrested an elementary school assistant teacher for child abuse. On February 5, 2014 at approximately 1:45 p.m., officers responded to Flora Ridge Elementary School located at 2900 Dyer Blvd., in reference to a report of child abuse. Officers met with the school employee that witnessed the incident. The witness stated that as the students from a special needs class entered the cafeteria the teacher’s assistant, identified as 26-year-old Franklin Santos Jr., instructed the victim to pick up a tray. The victim refused and threw herself on the floor. Santos Jr. picked up the child off the floor and started shaking the victim violently. The victim did not appear to sustain any injuries during the incident.
Franklin Santos Jr. Detectives met with Franklin Santos at the Kissimmee Police Department. Santos did not cooperate with the investigation. Through the course of the investigation, detectives obtained probable cause to charge Franklin Santos with Child Abuse when he grabbed the 6-year-old student and shook her repeatedly in an aggressive manner that could reasonably be expected to result in physical injury to a child. Franklin Santos was transported to the Osceola County Jail where he is held on $1,000 bond.

Sospechoso es acusado de Asesinato en Primer Grado Condado Osceola, FL Los detectives del Sheriff del Condado Osceola están acusando a Thomas Pettit de Asesinato en Primer Grado. La investigación se inició el 4 de febrero, aproximadamente a las 11:20 a.m., cuando oficiales respondieron al Budget Inn ubicado en el 4686 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway en Kissimmee. Suspect Being Charged with First Degree Murder Osceola County, FL – Osceola County Sheriff's detectives are charging Thomas Pettit with First Degree Murder. The investigation began on February 4 at approximately 11:20 a.m. when deputies responded to the Budget Inn located at 4686 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the motel manager who indicated he located an unresponsive female in room 119. Deputies located the female who was pronounced deceased at the scene. According to the manager, Thomas Pettit checked into the room alone on January 31 and paid for his room daily. On February 4, Pettit had not paid, so the manager went to the room and that is when he discovered the female. While investigating this incident, deputies received information regarding a disabled vehicle in the area of East 192 on the Brevard/
Osceola county line. Deputies responded to that area and spoke with a Brevard County Sheriff's deputy who located the vehicle in the ditch. Pettit was in the driver's seat and appeared to be intoxicated. Pettit was taken to St. Cloud Regional Medical Center. While at the hospital he became combative and struck a deputy. After being medically cleared, Pettit was arrested and charged him with Driving Without a Valid License and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer. Later, deputies questioned Pettit and he cooperated with the investigation. Based on his statements and the evidence, detectives are obtaining a felony warrant for his arrest. Pettit will be charged with First Degree Murder. The victim has been identified as Susan Emmerich, 57, Pettit's exwife. The medical examiner's report indicated the victim died from blunt force trauma.

The Orlando Magic Youth Fund donates $1 million to local nonprofits Orlando, FL – Twenty one Central Florida organizations received $1 million in grants from the Orlando Magic Youth Fund, a McCormick Foundation Fund. In a ceremony held at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, representatives were greeted by Orlando Magic Chairman Dan DeVos, Magic CEO Alex Martins, Magic Vice President of Philanthropy and Multicultural Insights and OMYF President Linda Landman Gonzalez and the OMYF team. In the past five years, OMYF-MFF has granted nearly $5 million to various organizations throughout Central Florida. That philosophy of giving falls in line with the vision of legendary owner Rich DeVos, who has stated through the years that it
was always his hope to use the Magic as a vehicle to assist others and make a difference in the community. The $1 million in funds given to the Central Florida nonprofit organizations is raised by the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation, and the match provided by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. After an extensive fivephase process, which began in April of 2014, the beneficiaries were recommended by the OMYF Board and then approved by the McCormick Foundation’s Board of Directors. Hougland shudders to think where her organization – and more importantly those citizens most in need – would be without the generous help of the Orlando Magic Youth Fund (OMYF-MFF). “This is a very emotional moment for me because you know what you are going to do with the money and you can almost see the people in need who you are going to help,” Hougland said. “Without this funding, it would really hurt a lot of people, so I do get really emotional about it.

James Borrego has been named the team Interim Coach. Borrego has a long history of success. Prior to joining the Magic Coaching Staff, Borrego had two seasons with the New Orleans Hornets and was with the San Antonio Spurs from 2003 – 2010. GM Rob Hennigan made it clear that the team will take their time to hire the right head coach and that Borrego will have his opportunity to be considered if he chooses. Borrego’s first task as the Interim was a match up against the LA Lakers last Friday. After a typical first half of the game, the Magic were down by 14 but they were able to come back. We saw a different team in the second half. Orlando played much more physical than we have seen all season. They were moving the ball, attacking the rim and even playing defense. Orlando was able to come back to take it into overtime and hold the Lakers to 6 points. Nik Vucevic had 25 points and 13 rebounds. Victor Oladipo played one of his best games this season with 12 points and 11 rebounds but it was Tobias Harris who led the team. The Wizards moved the ball better, out-rebounded Orlando, and had a much higher field goal percentage. Orlando was not ready for them but they were coming back home to play the New York Knicks before the All-Star break. Nik Vucevic put up 28 points and 18 rebounds in the win over New York. Oladipo added 19 of his own. Dewayne Dedmon made the biggest impact for Orlando’s defense with 6 blocks in just 20 minutes of play. The Center fouled out but I would expect to see much more of him for the remainder of the season. Fans who were in attendance of this home game got to witness something truly special. Before tip-off, Victor Oladipo took to center court with Orlando City’s Kaka to participate in a jersey exchange. To see a legend who is new to Orlando but known to world exchange jersey’s with one of Orlando’s rising stars was a very special moment. Oladipo will not get to enjoy this week off as he is set to participate in the Dunk Contest and the Rising Stars Challenge along with Elfrid Peyton. The Magic’s next game is on February 20th at home against the New Orleans Pelicans.
