Orlando Magic Celebrated "Noche Latina" Presented by Chase

Orlando, FL - En agradecimiento a la fanaticada Hispana del Orlando Magic el Magic llevó a cabo la Noche Latina presentada por Chase durante el partido del 6 de marzo contra los Kings de Sacramento en el Amway Center. The night includes a special postgame concert presented by Gasolina featuring Puerto Rican reggaeton duo, Angel y Khriz. In addition to the concert, fans enjoyed Latinoinspired music, dance and food.

Oscelola County News Comisión del Condado Osceola aprueba impuesto adicional de gasolina Condado Osceola, FL – Durante una votación el lunes los Comisionados del Condado Osceola aprobaron 5 centavos adicionales por galón en el precio de la gasolina, allanando así el camino para las mejoras al servicio de autobús LYNX, aumentando el presupuesto de repavimentación y ampliando el número de caminos de tierra que pueden ser pavimentado anualmente.

“Todos tuvimos que hacer sacrificios en los últimos seis años con respecto a qué proyectos el condado se podía aplazar. Pero estamos en un punto donde no podemos seguir retrasando estas decisiones”, dijo el Comisionado del Condado Mike Harford, uno de 4 comisionados que votaron para implementar el próximo impuesto, efectivo al 1 de enero de 2016. “Nos costará más mientras nos demoremos más porque vamos a tener que reconstruir caminos en lugar de mantenerlos”.

Osceola County Commission Approves Additional Gas Tax Osceola County, FL – By approving an additional 5 cents per gallon on the price of gas during a vote Monday, Osceola County Commissioners paved the way for improvements to LYNX bus service, increased the road resurfacing budget, and expanded the number of dirt roads that can be paved annually.

“We’ve all had to make sacrifices over the last six years regarding what projects the county has had to defer. But we are at a point where we can’t keep delaying these decisions,” said County Commissioner Mike Harford, one of 4 commissioners who voted to implement the new tax, effective January 1, 2016. “It is going to cost us more the longer we delay because we are going to have to rebuild roads rather than maintain them.”

In the nine months of the 2016 fiscal year, the tax is projected to generate just more than $6 million but more than $8.5 million over a full 12 months in FY 2017.

Commissioner Fred Hawkins, Jr. was the lone vote against the proposal.

After discussing transportation and funding for years as it fell behind road maintenance needs and increased wait times for LYNX service, the board decided during a strategic planning session earlier this year to consider the second local option fuel tax. Staff

researched the impact of the gas tax on the price of gas in the State of Florida, and found no direct correlation based on spot surveys taken over the last two years.

As part of the Countywide Coordinated Transportation Program, the gas tax, the already approved Designated Ad Valorem Tax (DAT) and a mobility fee are all options to meet the demand for roads, bicycle/pedestrian amenities and mass transit. The board is scheduled to consider the Mobility Fee on March 16.

Once the gas tax is in effect next year, Lynx riders will see immediate Sunday service and shorter intervals between buses moving in the same direction on the same route on Links 10 and 26 – key routes between Kissimmee and St. Cloud, and Poinciana and downtown Kissimmee.

On dirt road paving, the County would double its current pace for upgrading and maintenance of dirt roads (to $1.5 million a year) within the Urban Growth Boundary and eliminate dirt roads in the UGB by 2019. And after 10 years, dirt road maintenance for public streets could be eliminated Countywide.

School Choice STEM-ology Showcase Night at Chestnut Elementary School for Science and Engineering Chestnut Elementary School for Science and Engineering is the original Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) school in Osceola County at the elementary level. Chestnut offers students a traditional curriculum with a unique emphasis on STEM education.

Students are given opportunities for rigorous problem-based and projectbased learning with investigations, virtual labs, simulations, and community expeditions.

Students are also

highly engaged in hands-on learning activities with exciting opportunities for enrichment electives which refine their special talents and interests.

Taking a Closer Look at Orion after Successful Flight Test

Washington, D.C. - Engineers across the country have been busy taking a closer look at NASA's Orion spacecraft and the data it produced during its successful flight test in December 2014. Inside the Launch Abort System Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Orion was lifted using a special crane for removal of its heat shield on Feb. 13, 2015.

In the background, technicians move the heat shield on a work stand. The spacecraft’s heat shield protected Orion as it reentered Earth’s atmosphere at searing temperatures.

Removing the back shell allows the team to get a closer look at Orion’s systems to see how they fared during the trip to space.

The heat shield was removed

in preparation for shipment to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where special equipment will be used to remove its ablative material. From there, the heat shield will be shipped to NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, where it will be outfitted on a test article for water impact testing.

Meanwhile, NASA and Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor for Orion, continue to take a look at the data the flight test produced to validate preflight models and improve the spacecraft’s design. Analysis of data obtained during its two-orbit, four-and-a-half hour mission Dec. 5 will provide engineers detailed information on how the spacecraft fared.

Dancing with the Fringe Stars! From Soul Train to Train Wreck Orlando, FL - The Orlando Fringe descended on Hard Rock Live for the fabulously famous Fringe at the Hard Rock Fundraiser on Monday, March 2nd. This year, it took on a life of its own to become DANCING WITH THE FRINGE STARS! Hosted again by the incomparable Michael Andrew, and with a live band led by the ever talented, Tod Kimbro, it was a night unlike any other. Seven teams, all made up of Famous Fringe Favorites, competed to earn votes. No true competition would be complete without some equally famous judges: Eric Yow, Artistic Director of Yow Dance, Blue Star, Creator/Artistic Director of VarieTease, and ballroom dance teacher and Fringe icon Michael Wanzie are taking that honor.

Bright Ideas Competition Bright House Networks Bright Ideas STEM de Competencia para Jóvenes de hoy Orlando, FL - Bright House Networks nombró a Ashley Chico de Orlando, FL como la ganadora del gran premio del programa inaugural para Jóvenes de Hoy, Bright Ideas STEM. Bright Ideas STEM, a multi-state competition for high school students, challenged students to dream up the coolest inventions to make their own life, community or even the world, more awesome… and show how STEM – that’s science, technology, engineering and math, can bring their idea to life.

Ashley, a sophomore from Lake Highland Preparatory High School, won the competition with her idea “Chico HealthCare Software.”

Six finalists, one from each of Bright House Networks service areas, competed head-to-head on TV, in front of a studio audience, at the Finalist Pitch Event on March 6 in Orlando, FL. The program was recorded and will be available via Video on Demand (VOD) on Bright House Networks at a later date.

The menu, a “Taste of the Americas,” will continue to offer a culinary tour of North, Central and South America, with popular dishes including ceviche, jalapeño burgers, Argentinian skirt steak, whole crispy chicken and Chilean-style salmon. Fan favorites such as quesadillas, burritos, and

Comisionados del Condado Osceola reconocen a mujeres con premio "Women Warrior" Kissimmee, FL - En honor a la celebración del Mes de la Mujer la Comisionada del Condado Osceola Viviana Janer comenzó un reconocimiento para las mujeres del Condado Osceola que han dado innumerables horas de su tiempo a la comunidad. Una homenajeada fue selecciona por cada comisionado por su trayectoria y servicio voluntario.

La Comisionada Viviana Janer reconoció como primera Mujer Guerrera del Condado Osceola a Yolanda Hansen por ser una ciudadana del Condado Osceola durante 30 años. Ella es una Contadora Pública Certificada que es propietaria de El Osceola Star Newspaper que

One recipient was selected by each Commissioner for their advocacy and volunteerism.

Commissioner Viviana Janer recognized Osceola County’s very first Woman Warrior Yolanda Hansen for being an Osceola County citizen for 30 years. She is a Certified Public Accountant who owns her business the Osceola Star Newspaper which is in its 24th year of being published in Osceola County. For the last 3 decades Yolanda has volunteered her time to various Osceola County community events such as Viva Osceola, Gala Osceola and The 3 Kings Day Festival. Yolanda was on the Osceola County Library Board of Directors for 4 years. Yolanda Hansen was the recipient of La Prensa’s Outstanding Woman award in the Media and Communications category in 2012. This year Yolanda was also recognized by the Mexican Consulate for her trajectory and honored with their Successful Woman Award.

Sylvette Santos, propietaria de Sylvette Vacations Home Rental Management, fue ganadora del premio en la categoría de Negocios/Tecnología. “Es un honor y un privilegio recibir este reconocimiento en este mes de la Mujer. Es la cosecha del esfuerzo, la dedicación constante en el trabajo y la comunidad, vale la pena”, dijo Santos, madre de tres hijos profesionales, miembro de la junta directiva del Concilio de Negocios Hispanos de la Cámara de Comercio de Kissimmee/Osceola.

En la categoría Arte/Cultura: Iris Mora, recibió el premio por su pasión por las artes, siendo creadora de iniciativas y hacer realidad proyectos enfocados en atender las diferentes necesidades de la comunidad por medio de las artes.

Vega-Melendez, mother of two daughters, thanked her husband for his support and acknowledged some of the women that have inspired her.

She called on women to exercise their right to vote, “the reality of our community and the world in which we live, work and enjoy, is that there is still so much we need to do four ourselves in order to ensure our vote in the November 2016 elections. Get to know the candidates, their platforms and learn about the different issues and vote, vote, vote.”

Mirna Chamorro, winner of the award in the Health category, serves as the official spokeswoman for the Orange County and Seminole County Health Departments and is committed to educating the Hispanic Community in public health.

Sheriff & Police News Detienen sospechosos de robo armado en Bank of America Dos días más tarde, los agentes Condado Osceola - Agentes del Sheriff del Condado Osceola detuvieron a dos sospechosos por su implicación en el robo al Bank of America. Randall Oja y Brian Frazier fueron acusados de Robo con un Arma de Fuego y Hurto. Además, Frazier fue acusado de Posesión de Marihuana y Posesión de Parafernalia de Drogas.

Suspects arrested in Bank of America armed robbery Osceola County – Osceola County Sheriff's deputies have arrested two suspects for their involvement in the Bank of America robbery. Randall Oja and Brian Frazier were charged with Robbery with a Firearm and Grand Theft. In addition, Frazier was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

The investigation began on March 2 at approximately 12:24 p.m. when deputies responded to Bank of America located at 3305 S. Orange Blossom Trail in Kissimmee. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the employee who indicated a white male entered the bank, walked up to the window, implied he had a weapon and demanded cash.

The suspect fled the area with an undisclosed amount of money.

Two days later, deputies arrested Brian Frazier on drug charges. During his interview he disclosed information regarding the Bank of America robbery.

Initially, detectives thought Frazier only knew Oja, who committed the crime.

After further investigation, detectives learned Frazier was involved by driving Oja to and from the bank. Based on his statements, Frazier was arrested.

On March 5, detectives located Oja in Orange County. He was brought to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office for questioning and cooperated with the investigation. Based on his statements, Oja was arrested and booked into the Osceola County Jail.

However, the gas tax does not address Osceola’s $500-700 million backlog on roadway facilities and falls short of long term milling and resurfacing of the current and projected roadway network. It also does not provide for future service needs, including access to SunRail stations and multi-modal corridors outlined in the Comprehensive Plan.

The mobility fee addresses roadway improvements necessary to mitigate impacts from new development, and along with the DAT will create a longterm, sustainable funding source, officials said.

Orlando City Soccer Club juega su primer partido en el Citrus Bowl Orlando, FL - Toda la organización del Orlando City Soccer Club (OCSC) merece una ovación de pie de parte de la ciudad de Orlando y la MLS. El club logró lo que todo el mundo dudaba: no sólo trajeron un equipo de la MLS a Orlando, FL; se agotaron las entradas al nuevo Citrus Bowl.

El domingo pasado 62,510 aficionados llenaron el estadio y crearon una atmósfera tan especial que las palabras no le harían justicia. Se asociaron con Sun Rail y Lynx para proporcionar paseos y servicio de transporte gratuito desde varias ubicaciones en el Citrus Bowl haciendo que el estacionamiento y la llegada al Citrus Bowl fuera muy fácil. Orlando City Soccer Club first game at the Citrus Bowl Orlando, FL - The entire organization for the Orlando City Soccer Club deserves a standing ovation from the city of Orlando and the MLS. The Club accomplished what everyone doubted: not only did they bring an MLS team to Orlando, FL; they sold out the brand new Citrus Bowl.

Last Sunday 62,510 fans filled the stadium and created an atmosphere so special words won’t do it justice.

They partnered with Sun Rail and Lynx to provide free rides and shuttles from various locations to the Citrus Bowl making parking and getting to the Citrus Bowl very easy. Almost every fan was in their seats for the start of the game and at 5:12pm on Sunday, March 8, 2015 Orlando City kicked off its debut in the MLS against NYCFC. City dominated the first half controlling the ball and taking 7 shots on goal. Both teams played very physical resulting in multiple yellow cards. In the second half, NYCFC got on the scoreboard first. David Villa slipped a pass in to Mix Diskerud who was able to strike it inside the far post.

Orlando was quick to respond. In the 83rd minute of play, a questionable call on Aurelien Collin got him a red card forcing Orlando to play down

a man the remainder of the game.

City continued to attack the goal doing everything they could to find an equalizer.

In the final moments of play, Kevin Molino was fouled just outside the box. Kaka took the free kick that was deflected by an NYCFC defender into the goal. The dramatic moment sent the Citrus Bowl into frenzy. The goal was not the prettiest in soccer history but it was history. Kaka scored the first goal for the Orlando City Soccer Club in the MLS. While winning was the obvious goal, coming out of their first game with a draw is a result they will take.

OCSC showed the city of Orlando they are here to compete and win.

The next home game for Orlando City is March 21 against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The team originally set the maximized seating for the rest of the season at 20,000 but due to high demand, they have opened up an additional 3,000 seats. That number could continue to go up if the demand is there. Time will tell how big the market for soccer is in Orlando and if the Orlando City will need to expand their current stadium that is under construction.

I would like to make some comments from my point of view so I’ll just get right to it. I want to divide my comments into two sections, Excellent and Not That Bad. • Excellent, Mr. Phil Rawlings, congratulations to you for putting Orlando Soccer to the entire world.

The game day organization was a tough task and deserves very high accolades, especially for it being the first time.

• Thanks Kaka, making a goal in minute 90 for the tie, which felt like a win to all the fans present.

• Congratulations to Kaka for his game performance, you could see and feel his efforts throughout the entire 90 minutes that he was trying to win the game. He wanted it more than any other player on the field.

• Fans came from all across Florida to support their first ever MLS soccer team, Miami, Sarasota, Tampa, Daytona, Tallahassee, Jacksonville.

• I was expecting to see a great number of fans with their countries jerseys, especially yellow for Brazil and Colombia, to my surprise, everyone pulled together and wore the Lions Purple. Felicidades!

• Congratulations to the diehard fan groups, The Ruckus and The Iron Lion Firm and other fan groups for their well-coordinated cheering songs which switched between English and Spanish and for making it know to the visiting team whose house they were in (please, pardon their French).

• Its proof of how cool our team is that Kaka and the rest of our boys arrived on a public Lynx Bus • To the bad referee, we are still looking for you!

• The renovation of the stadium was better than expected, good enough to compete with many.

• The Orlando Lions merchandise stands were not enough to supply the demand from the passionate fans.

• REAL BAD: Shame on SunRail, they promoted their train service as if they were going to have one every 10 minutes and many people showed up to the stations to find out that the train was full and the next train would be in an hour, also full. Those few that made it on to the train had a terrible time getting back as there was only one train per hour to return them home, many ended up taking taxis.

BASKETBALL El Magic sigue luchando por el mayor número de victorias posibles esta temporada Orlando, FL - El viernes pasado, el Orlando Magic jugó contra el Sacramento Kings en el Amway Center. Orlando logró una racha de 4 juegos con la victoria 119114 sobre los Kings.

Jugando sin cinco jugadores incluyendo Nik Vucevic, el Magic fue capaz de mantener a raya a al Kings y terminar el juego con una victoria. Channing Frye jugó un juego increíble con 3 bloqueos, 10 rebotes y 22 puntos. Victor Oladipo lideró al equipo con 32 puntos, 10 asistencias y 5 robos mientras que Elfrid Peyton terminó con 12 asistencias y 10 puntos.

Orlando disparó muy bien acabando con el 56% desde el campo y dominó la cancha con 52 puntos en el tablero.

The Magic are still fighting for as many wins as possible this season Orlando, FL - Last Friday, the Orlando Magic played the Sacramento Kings at the Amway Center. Orlando was able to snap a 4 game losing streak with the 119 to 114 win over the Kings.

Playing without five players including Nik Vucevic, the Magic were able to hold off the Kings and finish the game with a win.

Channing Frye played an incredible game with 3 blocks, 10 rebounds and 22 points.

Victor Oladipo led the team with 32 points, 10 assists and 5 steals while Elfrid Peyton finished with 12 assists and 10 points.

Orlando shot very well finishing with 56% from the field and dominated the paint with 52 points in the paint.

Tobias Harris added 19 points; Andrew Nicholson added 14 and Ben Gordon finished with 12 points. This win showed a lot of growth for the Magic as they had lost the last three games by single digits and on Sunday night they were able to pull off another win - this time against the Boston Celtics.

The Magic had an impressive turnout of supporters at the Amway Center. Despite a slow start, Orlando was able to rally back. Dewayne Dedmon, who is starting in place of Vucevic, had a career night with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Peyton added 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists. Oladipo and Tobias Harris added 43 combined but it was Moe Harkless who had everyone talking. The forward has not seen too many minutes this season played for 30 and he made quite an impact for the Magic finishing with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Orlando finished with 103 over Boston’s 98.

The team took to the road to take on the Indiana Pacers. The Magic shot poorly at 37% and suffered numerous defensive breakdowns. The end result was a sloppy loss. The 118 to 86 loss hurt especially after two wins but it was time to refocus as they faced the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

Despite a smooth offensive flow and a solid first half, the Magic were unable to take home the win. Four out of the five starters finished in the double digits with points but defensively the Magic still struggle. The 97 to 91 loss in Milwaukee is another learning experience.

As we watch another season come to an end and see another losing record for Orlando, it just makes you wonder what changes are on the horizon for this Organization. Who will Coach?

Who will they draft? Are they willing to pay Tobias Harris in his restricted free agency? Are they finally ready to buy an all-star player? Time will tell. But I think significant changes are in store for Magic fans. Another losing season is just not acceptable and I do expect to see some big changes this summer.
