Heart of Florida United Way’s 23rd Annual Chef’s Gala Orlando, FL – Heart of Florida United Way’s 23rd annual Chef’s Gala raised nearly $300,000 to benefit local nonprofit programs that support education, income, health and basic needs for thousands of Central Floridians in need. More than 20 top chefs from Central Florida’s finest dining establishments collaborated for the region’s premier food and wine-pairing event on Saturday, May 16 at Epcot® World Showplace. Ninety-five cents of every dollar raised from the event benefits Central Floridians in need. “Our 23rd annual Chef’s Gala was a huge success – and we are pleased that, with the help of our partner agencies, we can continue to help
more than 400,000 people in the tricounty region,” said Robert H. Gov. Scott: Florida smashes all-time record quarter for tourism Naples, FL – Governor Rick Scott announced that Florida set another record in tourism numbers by welcoming the highest amount of visitors of any quarter in the state’s history according to VISIT FLORIDA. In the first quarter of 2015 (JanuaryMarch), 28.4 million visitors came to the state, an increase of 6.2 percent over the same period in 2014. The previous high for a quarter for tourism was 26.7 million visitors in quarter one last year. The average number of direct travel-related jobs in quarter one of 2015 was also a record high, with 1,186,900 Floridians employed in the tourism industry - up 4.8 percent from the same period in 2014. Governor Scott said, “I am proud to announce that the Sunshine State continued our record breaking success and welcomed the most visitors of any quarter in Florida’s history. Re-Defined ‘Leisure Park’ opens in Buenaventura Lakes Osceola County, FL – A renovation of underused space at the Robert Guevara Community Center makes it more inviting to residents. The newly redesigned ‘Leisure Park’ adds a basketball court, picnic pavilion with a grill and two tables as well as parking improvements. “I'm glad we were able to take an underutilized space and turn it into an asset for the community,” said County Commissioner Viviana Janer, of the project in District 2, which she represents. “We took a small space and added a lot of utility for residents. In addition, we made it ADA compliant so that it will serve everyone.” Commissioner Janer showcased the park’s opening with a hot dog cookout for residents. The project converted an old tennis court for basketball. In addition, a shuffle board court was removed, while sodding was added along with palm trees for aesthetics and shade. A new walkway provides additional access. The park is located at 501 Florida Parkway in the Buenaventura Lakes community.

Política / Politics The Road to a Healthy Florida By Angel Irizarry Kissimmee, FL - Last Tuesday, at the Osceola Heritage Park, the Kissimmee/ Osceola Chamber of Commerce held the Florida Legislative Update in an attempt to express the legislatures concern with health care, as well as other achievements and failures in the state legislature. The main concern is the proposed alternative to Medicaid expansion known as the Florida Health Insurance Exchange Program (FHIX). The Florida Health Insurance exchange aims to provide health care to 800,000 Floridians, which is the proposed plan by the Senate. The proposed plan by the House of Representatives will not cover 800,000 Floridians with healthcare, “The House plan would only fund a couple thousand people with health care leaving almost 800,000 people without health care. It would create a $2 billion dollar deficit. $2 billion dollars!” Sen. Darren Soto expressed.

El camino hacia una Florida saludable Por Ángel Irizarry Kissimmee, FL - El pasado martes, en el Osceola Heritage Park, la Cámara de Comercio de Kissimmee/Osceola llevó a cabo la Actualización de la Legislatura de la Florida en un intento de expresar la preocupación de los legisladores sobre el cuidado de la salud, así como otros logros y fracasos en la legislatura estatal. La principal preocupación es la alternativa propuesta a la expansión del Medicaid conocido como el Programa de Salud de la Florida “Insurance Exchange” (FHIX, siglas en inglés). El Florida Health Insurance Exchange tiene como objetivo proporcionar asistencia de salud a 800,000 residentes de la Florida, que es el plan propuesto por el Senado. El plan propuesto por la Cámara de Representantes no cubrirá los 800,000 residentes de la Florida con cuidado de la salud, "El plan de la Cámara sólo financia un par de miles de personas con atención de salud dejando fuera casi 800,000 personas sin atención médica. Crearía un déficit de $2 mil millones de dólares. $2,000,000,000 dólares!, expresó el senador Darren Soto. Por otro lado, si la legislatura está de acuerdo con el plan del Senado esto podría dar lugar a algunos resultados positivos, “Esto daría lugar a un excedente del $1 mil millones de dólares en nuestro presupuesto. Permitiría que tengamos los $600 millones de dólares para los recortes de impuestos que el gobernador ha propuesto y por el que muchos de nosotros votaron a favor, y podríamos financiar nuestros hospitales, y es un plan bipartidista por el que todos menos un senador votamos a favor," dijo el Sen. Soto. Rep. Neil Combee explicó por qué el plan propuesto por el Senado es una mejor opción, “La legislatura de la Florida - los fabricantes del las leyes en Tallahassee que se ocupan del cuidado de la salud - han creado un esquema regulatorio,
y han aprobado leyes que han hecho que la atención de la salud sea más cara, han hecho que el acceso sea más difícil, y es hora de que hagamos algo al respecto. Tenemos que doblar la curva, y si ampliamos Obamacare, si ampliamos Medicaid en este punto nunca vamos a poder doblar la curva". Antes de que el evento comenzara se celebró una pequeña manifestación para expresar lo importante que es que el programa de atención médica se pase, la cual reunió una cantidad de funcionarios del gobierno para mostrar su apoyo. El Rep. John Cortés se pronunció a favor de la manifestación, "Esto no es una cuestión de si o no el estado de Florida debería aceptar el dinero federal para las personas de bajos ingresos. Hemos estado haciendo eso durante años con fondos de LIP. No, esto es sobre el uso de fondos federales de manera más eficiente para asegurar el bien, y para que los floridanos de bajos ingresos ya no tengan que utilizar las salas de emergencia como su opción de atención primaria". La legislatura de la Florida vuelve a sesión el 1 de junio de 2015, y el primer asunto en atender es la aprobación del presupuesto, que aún no se ha aprobado. "No hemos terminado nuestro único deber constitucional, que es aprobar el presupuesto. Me solicito a mí mismo, al orador Crisafulli, y a los otros miembros de la Cámara a que tratemos de aprobar el presupuesto antes del 1 de julio, lo que detendrá o evitará un cierre del gobierno.", explicó el Rep. Mike LaRosa. El campus de Valencia College en Poinciana está siendo financiado por la Cámara por un monto de $11.9 millones de dólares de acuerdo con el senador Soto. It would allow us to have the $600 million dollars’ worth of tax cuts that the governor has proposed that many of us voted for, and it would fund our hospitals, and it is a bipartisan plan that all but one senator voted for,” Sen. Soto said. Rep. Neil Combee explained why the proposed plan by the Senate is a better option, “The Florida legislatures -the rule makers in Tallahassee that deal with health care- they have created a regulatory scheme, and laws have been passed that have made health care more
expensive, made access more difficult, and it’s time we do something about it. We have got to bend the curve, and if we expand Obamacare, if we expand Medicaid at this point we would never bend the curve.” Before the event started a small rally was held to express how important it was that the health care program gets passed, which gathered quite an amount of government officials to show their support. Rep. John Cortes spoke out in support of the rally, “This isn’t a matter of whether or not the state of Florida should accept federal money for low income individuals. We have been doing that for years with LIP funds. No, this is about using federal money more efficiently in insuring good, and low income Floridians no longer have to use emergency rooms as their primary care option.” The Florida legislature returns to session on June 1, 2015, and the first issue at hand is the approval of the budget, which has yet to be approved. “We did not finish our one constitutional duty, which is to pass the budget. I allocate myself, speaker Crisafulli, and other house members all intend to pass the budget before July 1, which will stop or avoid a government shutdown.” Rep. Mike LaRosa explained. The Valencia College campus in Poinciana is being funded by the House for an amount of $11.9 million dollars according to Sen. Soto. “We have over a 20 percent difference in kids going on to college from south Osceola and Poinciana versus North Osceola here in Kissimmee and St. Cloud, so it’s going to help a lot of kids,” Sen. Soto explained.

Dos sospechosos detenidos por Carjacking y 2 robos a mano armada Condado Osceola - Los detectives del Sheriff del Condado Osceola arrestaron a Joshua Luiz Alvarado y Jennifer Díaz por su participación en un incidente de robo de auto que se produjo el 14 de mayo de 2015. Two Suspects Arrested for Carjacking and 2 Armed Robberies Osceola County – Osceola County Sheriff's detectives arrested Joshua Luiz Alvarado and Jennifer Diaz for their involvement in a carjacking incident that occurred on May 14, 2015. On May 14 at approximately 1:33 p.m. deputies responded to the Quality Inn located at 4960 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee. When they arrived, they spoke with the 34-year old victim who indicated he responded to an online prostitution advertisement to meet a female. When he arrived, a female, later identified as Jennifer Diaz, and possibly two males took his car at gunpoint. It was later determined there was only one male suspect, identified
as Joshua Luiz Alvarado. The victim told deputies Alvarado told him he was a law enforcement officer and showed him what appeared to be a badge. As deputies were responding to the carjacking, they observed the vehicle the suspects arrived in, traveling on Highway 192. They followed the vehicle into Orange County. The Orange County Sheriff's Office assisted with following the vehicle and eventually it was stopped at the intersection of Hall Road and Aloma Avenue in Seminole County. Diaz and Alvarado were placed in custody and taken back to Osceola County to be interviewed by detectives. The vehicle they were stopped in had been reported stolen to the Groveland Police Department.

HBIF Golf Tournament Más de 80 golfistas participan en el Sexto Torneo de Golf Anual de HBIF en la Florida Central Orlando, FL - Más de 80 golfistas participaron en el sexto torneo de golf celebrado por el Fondo de Iniciativa para Negocios Hispanos en Reunion Resort el pasado 8 de mayo. La actividad, que se llevó a cabo en un ambiente divertido y un clima ideal para jugar golf, es parte de las iniciativas de HBIF para compartir con patrocinadores, clientes y colaboradores mientras se recaudan fondos para continuar esfuerzos para el desarrollo de negocios en la Florida. Este año, los patrocinadores del evento incluyeron a Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, Walt Disney World Resort, El Osceola Star, Florida Hospital, Lim and Associates, OUC The Reliable One, y Chris Vella, Agente de State Farm. More than 80 golfers participated in the Sixth Annual HBIF Golf Tournament in Central Florida Orlando, FL – More than 80 golfers participated in the Sixth Annual HBIF Golf Tournament celebrated by the Hispanic Business Initiative Fund of Florida (HBIF) on Friday, May 8 at Reunion Resort. The event is one of the HBIF’s initiatives to interact with sponsors, clients and partners while raising funds to continue efforts to develop businesses in Florida. This year, event sponsors included Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, Walt Disney World Resort, El Osceola Star, Florida Hospital, Lim and Associates, OUC The Reliable One, and Chris Vella, State Farm Agent. Golfers enjoyed a full-day tournament, including an awards luncheon where attendees were able to learn more about HBIF and the work that the organization has done over the last 20 years. Attendees also had the opportunity to presence a testimonial from one of HBIF’s successful clients, Pablo Prahl, owner of Proforma A & G Marketing Group. After breakfast, HBIF Vice President in Central Florida Gaby Ortigoni kicked off the tournament with words of gratitude to the athletes who attended the sixth consecutive charity fundraiser.

Orlando City aplasta al LA Galaxy 4-0 Orlando, Fl - Orlando City tuvo un comienzo rápido el pasado domingo en el Citrus Bowl contra los campeones de la MLS del año pasado, el LA Galaxy. Eric Avila puso a los Leones a ganar por uno al terminar un remate de cabeza en un centro de Brek Shea a sólo doce minutos de iniciado el juego. LA Galaxy tuvo uno de sus mejores intentos ofensivos durante la primera mitad, pero fue detenido en última instancia por una gran jugada defensiva de Seb Hines. Orlando se mantuvo energico . Durante 34 minutos minutos de juego, Kaká tejio una jugada a través de la defensa y encontró a Cyle Larin que fue capaz de deslizar el balón al fondo de las mallas. Orlando City blast victory vs. LA Galaxy 4-0 Orlando, Fl - Orlando City got off to a quick start last Sunday at the Citrus Bowl against last year’s MLS champions, the L.A. Galaxy. Eric Avila put the Lions up by one by finishing a header off a cross from Brek Shea just twelve minutes into the game. L.A. had one of their best attempts come about mid way through the first half but was ultimately stopped by a great defensive play from Seb Hines. Orlando kept the momentum going. 34 minutes into playing time, Kaka weaved through the defense and found Cyle Larin who was able to slip the ball into the back of the net. Ten minutes into the second half, Orlando found themselves in a penalty situation to take a 3 point lead. The Galaxy’s goalkeeper came out in a one on one verses Kaka. In a desperate move to stop him, Jaime Penedo slid into Kaka and forced a penalty kick.
Kaka took the shot and scored the third goal for Orlando. In celebrating the goal, Kaka held up Kevin Molino’s jersey honoring his injured teammate. Orlando continued to blast efforts at the opposing goal. Darwin Ceren was able to grab one more goal in the 72nd minute of play. From 30 yards out, Ceren sent a powerful, low shot in. It was deflected by L.A.’s defense and sent into the back of the net. The 4-0 win moved Orlando into fifth place in the East. Orlando’s growth this season is finally showing on the field. Young players are playing with more confidence and making better decisions while the veterans are leading them. The win at home was the first for Orlando this season, but as this team continues to gel I doubt it will be the last. The Lion’s next game is away against the San Jose Earthquakes on May 24th. They will return to the Citrus Bowl on May 30th to face the Columbus Crew.
