Consulado de México - Noticias / News Mexican Independence Day Festival Kissimmee, FL - Last Sunday, September 13, the Consulate of Mexico in Orlando held a big activity on the occasion of the celebration of the 205th Independence of Mexico.

The Independence Party event was held on Sunday afternoon on the Consulate of Mexico grounds in Orlando.

The Consul Juan Sabines presided the "El Grito de Independencia" ceremony, an important Mexican tradition consisting of the sounding of the bell, the threefold shout of ¡Viva México! and singing the national anthem.

The activity was open to the general public and attendees enjoyed music, mariachis, folkloric dances, raffles, prizes, and a variety of Mexican dishes. Information from a wide range of services targeted to the Hispanic community was also offered, from selling cars, tools, tractors, crafts and various Mexican products.

Fiesta de Independencia Mexicana Kissimmee, FL - El pasado domingo, 13 de septiembre, el Consulado de México en Orlando realizó una gran fiesta con motivo de la celebración de la 205a Independencia de México.

El evento Fiesta de Independencia se llevó a cabo durante la tarde en los terrenos del Consulado de México en Orlando. El Cónsul Juan Sabines presidió la ceremonia de “El Grito de Independencia”, importante tradición mexicana que consta del toque de

la campana, el grito triple de ¡Viva México! y el canto del himno nacional.

La actividad estuvo abierta al público en general y los asistentes disfrutaron de música, mariachis, bailes folklóricos, rifas, regalos y una gran variedad de antojitos mexicanos. También se ofreció información de una amplia gama de servicios especialmente dirigidos a la comunidad hispana.

Supervisor Arrington honored with Achievement Award wanted to be the kind of the person who Kissimmee, FL - For her outstanding and continued work in the community, Supervisor of Elections Mary Jane Arrington was honored recently by The Florida Commission on the Status of Women with a 2015 Achievement Award.

“We honor women from all over the state for their commitment and service to their community,’’ said Yvonne Fry, chairwoman and a commissioner for the state Commission on the Status of Women, adding that the women honored with the Achievement Awards were nominated based on their continued works with local charities, community groups and non-profit organizations.

Supervisor Arrington’s work in the Osceola community began with volunteering at her church and in her children’s schools. She then served on numerous city and county boards such as the City of Kissimmee Planning Commission, the Children’s Home and Help Now to name a few. In 1994, Arrington was the first woman elected to the Osceola County Board of County Commissioners. She held that office until 2002. She is also a founding supervisor of the Toho Water Authority.

Arrington was elected Supervisor of Elections in 2008.

“Community service is not a trait you are born with, it is something you are taught. I knew at a young age that I

made a difference in my community. I encourage everyone to get involved in their community. Working together we can accomplish anything in our own community,’’ Arrington said during the awards ceremony. “I encourage you to be bold. I encourage you to choose a bold goal. I also encourage you to develop a thick skin. Soft skin is nice to touch and feel and look at but it will hold you back in the things you need to do.

I also encourage you to get involved.

Be the change you want to see in your community.’’

Supervisor Arrington said she was honored to receive the Achievement Award.

“There are so many outstanding women who are doing amazing things and serving their communities. My parents instilled in me the desire to serve and I hope I have instilled that same desire in my children and others,’’ she said.

Supervisor Arrington has four adult children, two of whom are actively involved in government service and three grandsons. She also credits the support of her husband over the years with being able to serve others.

“Many years ago, I wisely chose a wonderful man to be my spouse.

Without his support my community service would not have been possible.’’ she said.

To help, the State of Florida has released a great resource to help: http://www.JustTake20. org. The Florida Department of Education launched the Just Take 20 literacy campaign to support K-12 Florida families with practical, easy-toimplement activities to add 20 minutes of reading to their day.

La temporada de huracanes del Atlántico para el 2015 se está calentando con el reciente desarrollo de varios sistemas tropicales en el Atlántico. La temporada de huracanes se extiende del 1 de junio al 30 de noviembre, pero la historia muestra que la época más activa comienza a finales de agosto y el pico a mediados de septiembre.

KUA, Prepared for Any Storm Por Jim Welsh The 2015 Atlantic hurricane season is heating up with the recent development of several tropical systems in the Atlantic.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, but history shows the most active time begins in late-August and peaks in midSeptember.

While it’s been almost a decade since a hurricane made landfall in Florida, Kissimmee Utility Authority is still highly aware of the damage a hurricane can inflict, so we go to great lengths to be prepared.

Preparation is key. Since the memorable 2004 hurricane season, KUA has invested millions of dollars to strengthen its electric system so the system is strong and ready when severe weather strikes. This can result in less damage and fewer electricity outages. Hardening activities include inspecting and replacing weak power poles, trimming trees away from power lines and installing new equipment.

These investments by KUA can pay off not only during hurricane season, but throughout the year.

After any storm that results in electricity outages, our crews are here in the community to respond quickly and safely.

Statistics show locally-owned utilities like KUA shine at providing reliable electricity. Statewide averages for utilities show that customers of community-owned utilities enjoy quicker repair times and shorter outages. Municipal utilities have led the way among all electric utilities with the shortest average repair time for the past 11 years. This is an important measure of reliability that our linemen, and all of our utility staff, take pride in.

It has been some time since a major storm or series of storms hit the state, but planning for the

worst is part of being prepared. A single storm concentrated in an area can be devastating. In those situations, the rebuilding task can be huge.

To prepare for the worst, KUA partners with 33 other cities around the state in a mutual aid agreement.

When any utility calls, the others agree to support them with workers and equipment. This makes the restoration process go faster and the lights come back on quicker.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a 90 percent chance of a below-normal hurricane activity this season, and we hope that holds true. Nevertheless, we want you to know that KUA has the community power and statewide strength to provide reliable service in any season.

To assist you with your preparations, KUA has developed a comprehensive 40-page hurricane handbook. The guide includes information on emergency shelters, evacuation routes, generator safety and power outage restoration as well as helpful telephone numbers, a disaster supplies checklist and a tropical cyclone tracking chart. The handbook can be downloaded in both English and Spanish from our website at www.kua.com/hurricane.

City of Kissimmee - Noticias / News La Ciudad de Kissimmee anuncia la gran Inauguración del puente Kissimmee Trail Kissimmee, FL - La ciudad de Kissimmee celebró una ceremonia de corte de cinta de miércoles 16 de septiembre, para la gran inauguración del puente Kissimmee Trail. Abarcando John Young Parkway, justo al norte de Columbia Avenue en Kissimmee, la estructura peatonal y el puente ciclista incluye un corredor principal de 220 pies con rampas de acceso para unir el sendero existente en los lados este y oeste de John Young Parkway. City of Kissimmee Announces Grand Opening of Kissimmee Trail Bridge Kissimmee, FL - The City of Kissimmee held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, September 16, for the grand opening of the Kissimmee Trail Bridge. Spanning John Young Parkway, just north of Columbia Avenue in Kissimmee, the pedestrian and bicycle bridge structure includes a 220 foot main bridge with approach ramps to tie into the existing trail on the west and east sides of John Young Parkway. The Kissimmee Trail Bridge features an arch with signage welcoming traffic into the City, with the bridge connected by two towers, each approximately 40 feet tall. The total structure exceeds 1,100 feet in length and serves as a gateway structure into the City.

The Kissimmee Trail Bridge now allows the continuation of the

Kissimmee Trail Loop across John Young Parkway, a major arterial within the City, allowing the users to cross the parkway without exposure to the high speed traffic. In addition, the structure includes helix approaches which provide character and “friendlier” riding experiences than conventional switchback style ramps for users including pedestrians, cyclists and people of all ages. During the design process an emphasis was placed on Green Design features which reduce energy dependence and environmental footprint.

Through the City’s participation in MetroPlan Orlando, the Kissimmee Trail Bridge was made possible by utilizing Florida Department of Transportation funds.

Valencia Ranks 4th in Nation for Number of Associate Degrees Orlando, FL – Valencia College ranks fourth in the nation for the number of associate degrees awarded to students, according to a ranking of more than 3,600 colleges and universities published this week by Community College Week.

To compile its annual Top 100 rankings, the editors of Community College Week used data from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics and focused on degrees conferred during the 2013-14 academic year. In that year, Valencia awarded 7,384 associate degrees – 60 percent of which were earned by minority students.

The rankings were published Sept. 7, 2015. The number of degrees Valencia awarded in 2013-14 jumped by 4 percent over the previous year, 2012-13.

Also noteworthy, the college ranks fourth in the nation in the number of degrees awarded to Hispanic students and seventh in the number awarded to African-Americans.

The college also ranked third in the nation in the number of one-year certificates awarded. Around the country, more than 5,500 colleges, universities and other educational institutions offer one-year certificates. Aside from the number of overall associate degrees conferred, Valencia ranked high in the number of associate degrees awarded across a number of academic disciplines: second in the number of degrees awarded in general studies and the humanities; 14th in computer and information sciences; 22nd in business degrees, 37th in engineering technologies and engineering-related fields; 42nd in criminal justice; and 47th in registered nursing.

Valencia offers four types of degrees: Associate in Arts (A.A.), Associate in Science (A.S.), and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees. The A.A. degree parallels the first two years of a four-year bachelor’s degree. In Florida, graduates with an A.A. degree are guaranteed acceptance as juniors into the state university system.

DirectConnect to UCF, a long-standing partnership between Valencia and the University of Central Florida, has contributed to Valencia’s high transfer rate, which is considered to be among the highest in the nation. DirectConnect to UCF guarantees that Valencia graduates will be accepted and receive accelerated admission to UCF. Since the program’s inception in 2006, more than 36,000 students have transferred from Valencia to UCF. In 2012, Valencia College’s DirectConnect to UCF program was selected by Excelencia in Education, a Washington, D.C.-based organization, as the nation’s top program for increasing academic opportunities and success for Hispanic students at the associate level.

Este evento, libre de costo, marcó el inicio del Mes de la Herencia Hispana, el cual se celebra del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre de 2015. El mes honra la cultura y tradiciones de los residentes estadounidenses provenientes de España, México y países de habla hispana de Centroamérica, Suramérica y el Caribe. 9th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff at Orlando City Hall Orlando, FL - Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz hosted the 9th Annual City of Orlando's Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff event on Thursday, September 10 to celebrate the influence of Hispanic culture in Orlando.

This free event celebrated the commencement of Hispanic Heritage month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, 2015. The month honors the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of the

Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The starting date coincides with the Independence Commemoration of several Latin American countries.

This year’s event highlighted Puerto Rico and will feature Latin music, food and folkloric dancers. Guests were also able to visit the art exhibit “La Diaspora” at the Terrace Gallery in City Hall that showcased a diverse collection of art pieces from Central Florida emerging and veteran Puerto Rican artists. After its debut at City Hall, the exhibit will tour various cities in the United States and Puerto Rico.

The presentation of the “Estrella”, “Amigo”, “Compadre”, “Empresario”, and “Presidente” Awards highlighted the formal evening.

Mr. Hector Marcano, from iHeart Radio, was presented this year with the “Compadre” Award. The “Compadre” Award was created to recognize an organization/individual that demonstrated extraordinary support to the Hispanic Community.

This unique event once again achieved the Hispanic Business Council’s primary goal of uniting the various cultures of Osceola County as represented by its many businesses, from large corporations to small business owners.

Gala is a chance to officially recognize those that have excelled in making our community a better place as well as celebrating the diversity of the Hispanic culture.

Again this year, the Hispanic Business Council of the Kissimmee/ Osceola County Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando joined forces to present the “Estrella” Award. This is an award of merit presented to outstanding, dedicated individuals who have contributed to the enrichment and overall growth of Hispanics in Central Florida or have excelled as a Hispanic Leader in the region in any of the following areas: arts, culture, entertainment, community outreach, not for profit, business, government, education and economic development. A selection committee represented by both chambers elected Orlando City Soccer Club, as the recipient of this prestigious award. With the presentation of the “Estrella” Award, both organizations are taking a step forward in advancing collaboration practices and partnerships to promote Hispanic business success in Central Florida.

The recipient of the Businessman of the Year, was Mr. Jose Santiago from Evolve/TLG Distributors.

Democratic Hispanic Caucus of Florida Orlando, FL - As part of the celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month the Democratic Hispanic Caucus of Florida celebrated their anual gala on Saturday, September 13th at the Double Tree in Orlando.

The sold out event was attended by prominent figures of the Democratic Party, community leaders, and members of the business community of Central Florida.

The theme of the night was “Creating leaders today for the future

of tomorrow”. The party included art, music and traditional dance performances from Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Sheriff & Police - Noticias / News Internet Child Sex Operation Results in 10 Arrests Department, Polk County Sheriff's Osceola County, FL – Osceola County Sheriff's detectives concluded a 4-day undercover operation which resulted in 10 suspects arrested and charged with soliciting sex from a child via the Internet and other sex related crimes. Led by the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, “Operation Blind Date” was conducted September 10-13, 2015, as a part of the Central Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Participating agencies included: Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Kissimmee Police Department, Orlando Police

Office and Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

During the operation, undercover detectives, posed as juveniles to talk with individuals in chat rooms and instant messaging programs on the Internet. Suspects would travel to a meeting location located in Osceola County with the purpose of having sex with a child. One suspect traveled from as far as Ocala and another suspect brought his two-year old child with him. All the suspects were arrested in Osceola County and booked into the Osceola County Jail.

Store Employee and Customer Arrested for Theft and Stolen Property Osceola County, FL - Osceola County Sheriff's detectives arrested Gustavo Andres Ramos-Sanchez, a store employee with Best Buy and Jose Harlet Frias, a customer. Sanchez is charged with 2 counts of Retail Theft Alone or Coordinating with Others and 2 counts of Trafficking in Stolen Property. Frias is charged with 2 counts of Retail Theft Alone or Coordinating with Others, 2 counts of Dealing in Stolen Property and 1 count of Violation of Pawn Brokers Act. The investigation began September 2 when deputies responded to Best Buy located at 1620 W. Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee. They spoke with the store

manager who indicated Sanchez, who was working in the asset protection position at the store, allowed a customer, Frias, to leave the store with two large screen television sets, valued at $1,500 each. After checking the receipt, store management realized Frias had only purchased candy. Store surveillance shows Sanchez allowing Frias to leave with the stolen property.

After further investigation, detectives determined Sanchez and the customer, Frias knew each other. Based on this information, Sanchez and Frias were arrested and booked into the Osceola County Jail. The investigation is ongoing with additional charges pending.

El muy esperado estreno de la temporada de La Banda de la Cadena Univision trasmite a los fans toda la energía y emoción desde Miami Beach al inicio de la búsqueda y creación de La Banda. Se presenta a la audiencia a la bella conductora del programa, Alejandra Espinoza, quien les da la bienvenida al local del programa en South Beach. Y por primera vez, los fans están a cargo.

Breck Shea regresó a las canchas luego de estar cerca de dos meses lesionado, de sus botas salio la asistencia en el segundo gol.

3-1 gana Orlando a Kansas City

Bryan Rochez estrenó su cuenta particular.

Orlando City logró una gran victoria necesaria el pasado domingo ante el Sporting de Kansas City. A tan sólo tres minutos de juego, Luke Boden envió un hermoso pase dirigido a Adrian Winter quien envío el balón directo a la meta. Ese fue el gol más rápido que Orlando ha anotado hasta el momento. Orlando continuó atacando y creando oportunidades.

Orlando generó dos buenos intentos más de gol antes del medio tiempo pero Orlando continúo con su ventaja de 1 a 0 al entrar en la segunda mitad.

En el minuto 59 de juego, Kansas City encontró el empate. Inmediatamente después, el entrenador Adrian Heath envió en Brek Shea por Carlos Rivas.

Esta fue la primera vez de Shea de nuevo en el terreno de juego desde que se lesionó hace aproximadamente dos meses. Shea no perdió el tiempo contribuyendo en la ofensiva de los Leones. Shea tuvo el balón en el área

Just three minutes into play, Luke Boden sent a beautiful ball into the box where Adrian Winter was there to nod it into the goal. That was the fastest Orlando has scored so far. Orlando continued attacking and creating opportunities.

Two more great looks on goal before the half but Orlando maintained their lead 1 to 0 going into the second half.

On the 59th minute of play, Kansas City found their equalizer. Immediately after, Coach Adrian Heath sent in Brek Shea for Carlos Rivas. This was Shea’s first time back on the pitch since being injured roughly two months ago. Shea wasted no time contributing to the Lion’s offense. Shea controlled the ball in the box and was able to tuck in back to Bryan Rochez who one touched the ball

into the net.

This was Rochez first goal this year and gave Orlando the lead. Rochez had a foot in Orlando’s final goal of the game when he gained possession of the ball in the box and found Winter. Winter then touched it over to Lewis Neal who played it through the defense back to Winter. Winter was able to knock it into the back of the net to give Orlando the 3-1 victory over Kansas City.

Five games remain for Orlando and every point they can squeeze out is going to be necessary to make a run for the playoffs. They currently are just one spot out of making the playoffs and are just two points away from taking that spot. But maintaining it for those last 5 games becomes crucial as Orlando City looks to finish their season by defying expectations.
