Since 2000, three detailed Hispanic origin groups surpassed a population of 1 million: Salvadoran (1.6 million), Dominican (1.4 million) and Guatemalan (1.0 million).

Regional Geographic Distribution The Hispanic population grew in every region of the United States between 2000 and 2010, and most significantly in the South and Midwest. The South saw a 57 percent increase in its Hispanic population, which was four times the growth of the total population in the South (14 percent).

Junta de Directores de la Cámara de comercio puertorriqueña Orlando, FL. – La Cámara de Comercio Puertorriqueña de la Florida Central presentará su nueva Junta de Directores y anunciará los proyectos que se apresta a materializar en su primer evento anual denominado “Un Nuevo Comienzo”, que se llevará a cabo el jueves, 9 de junio en la Rotunda de la Ciudad de Orlando a partir de las 5:30 p.m.

La actividad servirá de plataforma para comunicar a la comunidad la nueva visión de la entidad y las actividades que organizarán durante el año tales como talleres educativos, redes de negocio, programas de voluntariado, entre otras. Educación / Education Florida Technical College en el Cuadro de Honor Presidencial Orlando, FL – Florida Technical College ha sido incluido en el Cuadro de Honor Presidencial de 2010 (President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll) por la participación de sus estudiantes, profesores y personal en importantes servicios que logran resultados medibles en la comunidad, un reconocimiento que también le fue otorgado en 2009. Oficinas del Distrito Escolar - Horario de Verano En estos tiempos de inestabilidad económica, el Distrito Escolar de Osceola continua buscando formas de ahorrar dinero. Durante los meses de verano, el Distrito implementará una semana de trabajo de cuatro días para ahorrar en los gastos operativos y de energía. Comenzando el 13 de junio de 2011 y terminando el 12 de agosto de 2011, las oficinas administrativas del Distrito Escolar y las oficinas principales de las escuelas estarán abiertas al público de lunes a jueves durante el siguiente horario: Lunes a miércoles 7:00 a.m. a 5:00 p.m. --jueves 7:00 a.m. a 4:30 p.m.

School District Offices to be closed during summer As the Osceola School District continues to look at ways to save money in this time of economic instability, the district will save on utility costs and operational costs by implementing a four-day work week during the summer months. Beginning on June 13, 2011, and ending on August 12, 2011, the school district’s administrative offices and school front offices will be open to the public Monday through Thursday during the following hours: Monday - Wednesday -- 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

--Thursday -- 7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Some district facilities may be open on Fridays for teacher trainings, school-based events, or maintenance

work. For the week of July 4, 2011, regular work hours (Tuesday - Friday) of 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. will be followed. School District offices will be closed on Monday, July 4.

Osceola School District’s Extended Day Summer Camp will run Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. from June 15 - July 15 at 10 elementary school locations during Summer Session 1: Deerwood, Reedy Creek, Celebration K-8, Kissimmee, Mill Creek, Michigan Avenue, Pleasant Hill, Partin Settlement, Ventura, and Narcoossee. Session 2 from July 18 - August 12 will be held at six school locations: Pleasant Hill, Kissimmee, Koa, Partin Settlement, Michigan Avenue,

and Ventura. Extended Day’s administrative offices will remain open five days a week throughout the summer to support the camp sites.

The School District’s Voluntary Prekindergarten Program (VPK) will run Monday through Friday, June 15 through July 29, from 7:45 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. at two locations: Osceola Center for Early Learning at the Ross Jeffries Education Center and Chambers Park Community Center. This free program is open to incoming kindergarten age students who have not already attended a VPK program. The Prekindergarten administrative office will remain open five days a week throughout the summer to support the VPK program.

St. Cloud’s Settlers Trail Paving Project begins St. Cloud, FL – The City of St. Cloud Public Services staff announces that a portion of Settlers Trail (off of Old Canoe Creek Road) will be paved one day during the week of May 23.

“This project is part of the implementation of the City of St. Cloud’s ‘Twenty-Year Paving Plan,’” said City of St. Cloud Engineer III Kevin Felblinger.

“Our contractor, APAC-Southeast, Inc., is estimating that that the work should only take one day to complete, depending on factors such as weather conditions.”

In the first five years of the paving plan, from 2011-2015, specific roadways needing utility upgrades will be identified,

neighborhoods will be prioritized by both age and current asphalt condition, and asphalt in the poorest condition will be placed in the first three years. The City of St. Cloud’s road program extends from the initial construction of roads to the ultimate restoration and rehabilitation of failing streets.

Motorists are urged to use caution surrounding the Settlers Trail area and to be aware of workers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other motorists. Directional signs will be posted. For more details on this project, please call the Public Services Customer Service Line at (407) 957-7344.

June 17 – Movie at the Lakefront: This year-round monthly program is free to the community. A family movie is shown at Lakefront Park on a giant inflatable movie screen. June’s movie will be “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” and it will begin at sunset.

June – Open Gym ends: This special time set aside when the gym floor is open to everyone will once again start in September. Open Gym hours are Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Civic Center.

goldstar Inn armed robbery suspect Osceola County, FL -- Osceola County Sheriff’s detectives need the public’s help in identifying an armed robbery suspect. On May 22 at approximately 10:48 p.m., Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Goldstar Inn located at 4600 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the employee who indicated she opened the door to let a white male enter the motel. He asked her several questions about renting a room and he left because he said he left his identification in his vehicle. A few minutes later, she let him back in the motel and he approached the counter. She thought he was getting his identification out of his wallet, but he pointed a handgun at her and demanded money.

He left the motel on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. A perimeter was set, but patrol with the assistance of Aviation and K-9 Units were unable to locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5’9” wearing blue jeans with orange stitching on the pockets and a bright green shirt. He might also have a tattoo on the inside of his right arm.

Kissimmee Police investigating multiple business burglaries Kissimmee, FL – Kissimmee police detectives are investigating a series of business burglaries where the suspects have entered vacant businesses to force entry into adjoining businesses through adjacent walls.

On April 23, 2011, the Sprint Store located at 1001 W. Vine Street in Kissimmee reported a burglary to their business. The suspects entered the store through a vacant adjacent store and were able to take multiple cell phones and other portable electronic devices.

On April 30, 2011 the Perfume Paris located at 1491 E. Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee was burglarized.

Employees discovered that holes had been cut in the walls from a vacant adjoining business giving the suspects access to the perfume supply. The suspects were able to remove a large quantity of perfume from the business.

On May 15, 2011, a similar incident occurred at the Radio Shack located at 1944 North John Young Parkway. In this case, the suspects were able to remove the safe from this location by entering through the adjacent wall of a closed business.

On May 21, 2011 the suspects gained access to a vacant business located at 2151 Columbia Avenue. From that vacant space they were able to go through the wall to 2149 Columbia Avenue, Cell Phone Outlet, and then into 2147 Columbia Avenue, Columbia Liquors. The suspects took merchandise including cell phones, perfume, and alcohol from the businesses.

Detectives are currently looking for a white, possibly Ford van, which has writing on the left rear door at the same level of the license plate. The van may be related to the burglaries.

“We are working closely with our local business owners and property managers and have asked them to report any suspicious activity,” said Chief Iwanski, “We are also asking the public to report any suspicious activity that may relate to the crimes.”

Student charged with drugging teacher’s coffee Osceola County, FL -- Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Josue Ernesto Ortiz, a 13-yearold student at Discovery Intermediate School, for an incident involving his teacher. On May 19, the dean of students contacted the school resource officer to make her aware rumors were circulating a student might have put a prescription medication into a teacher’s drink.

On May 16, a teacher went home feeling sick. Prior to being taken home, she told two other teachers she felt nauseous, dizzy and drowsy. After speaking with several students in the teacher’s class, school officials and the school resource officer confirmed Ortiz had put one of his prescribed medication pills, Clonidine, in the teacher’s drink. Deputies interviewed Ortiz who cooperated with the investigation. He admitted to detectives he put one of his prescribed pills, which he takes to help him sleep at night, in the teacher’s drink because she yelled at him in class.
