Primary Election Kissimmee, FL – El pasado 14 de agosto de 2012, se celebraron las elecciones primarias a nivel nacional. En el Condado Osceola la noche fue una de larga espera, llena de expectativas y sorpresas. Los candidatos que trabajaron arduamente en sus campañas vieron el fruto de sus esfuerzos. Una vez entregados los resultados finales pero no oficiales se pudo constatar como gran ausente a los votantes, incluyendo a los hispanos con un muy bajo porcentaje de asistencia. Esto se vio reflejado en los resultados de los candidatos hispanos que corrieron en esta contienda. De 17 candidatos hispanos solo 6 continúan en la contienda para las elecciones del 6 de noviembre, además de los hispanos que no fueron sujetos a primarias como Daren Soto y Art Otero.

Julius Meléndez y John Quiñones fueron vencidos en un distrito predominantemente hispano por Todd Long quien recibió un 51.37% para representante del Congreso por el Distrito 9 del partido Republicano, este se enfrentará a Alan Grayson del partido Demócrata en noviembre.

La Gente No Votó Low Voter Turnout Kissimmee, FL – On Tuesday August 14, 2012 primary elections were held nationwide. In Osceola County, the night felt like a really long one, full of expectations and surprises. Candidates who worked hard for their campaign saw their pay off upon winning. Once the final but not official results were published, we were able to notice that the biggest absentees were the voters, including the Hispanic vote. A small percentage of Hispanic voters presented their votes, this absenteeism was reflected in the results. Out of 17 Hispanic candidates, only 6 continue on the running towards the elections of November 6, besides the Hispanics that were not subject to primaries like Daren Soto and Art Otero.

Julius Melendez and John Quiñones were defeated as Representative in Congress District 9, in a district predominantly Hispanic, by Todd Long who received a 51.37% for the Republican Party. Todd will later be faced with Alan Grayson from the Democrat Party.

Disney Presents $150,000 Check for West Osceola Branch Library Osceola County, FL – Osceola County Commissioners accepted a $150,000 donation from Walt Disney World on Monday that will be used for construction of the West Osceola Branch library.

“On behalf of Osceola County I would like to express our appreciation for this donation. For many years, the residents of Celebration have demonstrated their love for public libraries and the contributions that they make to their community,” said Commissioner Michael Harford, whose district includes Celebration.

“In the early days they even went so far as to start their own small, community library, staffed completely by local volunteers. Now they are just a few short months away from having a new 10,000-square foot library branch to serve the informational resource needs of their community. This would not have been possible apart from the donations of many, including this generous gift from the folks at Walt Disney, who once again have shown their commitment to the community.”

Construction work on the 10,000-square foot building should be complete by January 2013 with an opening expected sometime in February. The library will have areas for collections, reading, study, computer, children/family and teens; as well as a large multi-purpose room.

“I am excited that the West Osceola Branch will finally have a permanent home and I look forward to the benefits it will provide to Celebration residents,” Commissioner Harford added.

Disney World’s Manager of Minority Business Development Betty Lowery made the presentation Monday and said, “We are pleased and we are proud to continue to invest in Osceola and this important community resource.”

Forms for Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Now Available Washington, DC – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) submitted a Federal Register notice announcing new forms and instructions to allow individuals to request consideration of deferred action for childhood arrivals from USCIS. USCIS began accepting completed forms tomorrow, August 15, 2012. On June 15, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced that certain people who came to the United States as children and meet other key guidelines may request, on a case-bycase basis, consideration of deferred action.

“The release of the new form and instructions to allow individuals to request consideration of deferred action for childhood arrivals from USCIS marks an important step in our implementation of this new process,” said USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas. “While requests should not be submitted until August 15th, it is important that individuals wishing to be considered for deferred action understand the requirements necessary to demonstrate eligibility to be considered.”

Individuals requesting consideration of deferred action for childhood arrivals must submit Form I-821D, Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization (with accompanying fees); and an I-765WS, Worksheet.

USCIS recently developed a series of resources to inform the on how the process will work. The website, www. uscis.gov/childhoodarrivals, includes a flyer, a How do I brochure, frequently asked questions, and a number of other resources. USCIS encourages individuals with questions to visit this website or call the USCIS National Customer Service line at 1-800-3755283.

USCIS is aware of immigration scams surrounding the deferred action for childhood arrivals process.

Melba Luciano Condado Osceola , FL – El 2 de julio de 2012, la Junta Escolar del Condado Osceola nombró a Melba Luciano Superintendente Interina. La Sra. First Hispanic Superintendent for Osceola County District Osceola County, FL –On July 2, 2012, the Osceola County School Board named Melba Luciano, Interim Superintendent. Mrs. Luciano will hold the position for six months during the official hiring process, but she had express interest to have the job permanently.

Mrs. Melba Luciano started Educating while living in New York, where she was a teacher for 5 years.

She has been working for 25 years with the Osceola School District, where she started as a classroom assistant, but sooner than later felt the need to be back in the classroom and worked her way up into teaching. Throughout the years she has also served in positions like curriculum instruction, curriculum resource specialist, assistant principal and principal for several schools.

The now Superintendent, Melba Luciano told El Osceola Star Newspaper that she will “utilize all her experience in order to accomplish her first and most important goal which is to find ways to improve students’ achievements, always focusing on the kids, also she will be working diligently on the collaboration and communication between the board, the staff and the faculty.”

As the first Hispanic superintendent in the county, Mrs. Luciano has the opportunity to achieve a positive impact towards the needs of the Hispanic students, which today are a 55% of the total student population.

KUA - Noticias / News Chris Gent, de KUA, electo presidente de la FPRA Kissimmee FL – Durante su conferencia anual, llevada a cabo en St. Augustine, los miembros de la Asociación de Relaciones Públicas de la Florida (FPRA, siglas en inglés) elegió al vicepresidente de comunicaciones corporativas de Kissimmee Utility Authority Chris M. Gent como el presidente electo de la organización a nivel estatal.

Como presidente electo, Gent coordinará el proceso general de administración de la asociación, proveerá una revisión anual de los estatutos de la organización y sus códigos de ética, y participará de los comités del capítulo para las premiaciones a nivel estatal. Este comenzará a ocupar la posición el 1ero de septiembre de 2013.

Gent ha estado activo en la FPRA por 18 años, ocupando varias posiciones de liderazgo en el capítulo local y a nivel estatal. Es el pasado presidente de capítulo del área de Orlando y ha servido en su junta local por 14 años.

Además, ha servido por ocho años en la junta de directores de la FPRA a nivel estatal, incluyendo seis años en el comité ejecutivo.

Gent obtuvo su Acreditación en Relaciones Públicas (APR, siglas en inglés) en el 2010 y su designación como Consejero de Relaciones Públicas Certificado en el 2011.

Nueva subestación eléctrica Kissimmee FL – La junta de directores de Kissimmee Utility Authority aprobó el 1ero de agosto la construcción de una nueva subestación eléctrica de $17.2 millones para servir el centro de la ciudad de Kissimmee y su distrito empresarial.

La subestación reemplazará la Subestación de Planta de Energía existente de la empresa, una facilidad a principios del 1970 que se encuentra en el Lakefront Park de Kissimmee.

New Electric Substation Kissimmee FL – The Kissimmee Utility Authority board of directors on Aug. 1 approved the construction of a new $17.2 million electric substation to serve downtown Kissimmee and its business district.

The substation will replace the utility’s existing Power Plant Substation, a facility constructed in the early 1970s that overlooks Kissimmee’s 25-acre lakefront park. Construction of the new facility will coincide with the decommissioning of KUA’s Roy E. Hansel Generating Station, a 40-megawatt combined cycle power continues on page 16 >>>

Chris Gent, from KUA, Elected Presidente de la FPRA Kissimmee FL – During its annual conference held in St. Augustine, members of the Florida Public Relations Association elected Kissimmee Utility Authority vice president of corporate communications Chris M. Gent as president-elect of the statewide organization.

As president-elect, Gent will coordinate the association’s management overview process, provide an annual review of association by-laws and code of ethics, and serve on the chapter and statewide awards committees. He will become association president on Sept. 1, 2013.

Gent has been active in FPRA for 18 years, holding various leadership positions at the local chapter and statewide levels. He is a former

president of FPRA’s Orlando Area Chapter and has served on the local board for 14 years. In addition, he has served eight years on the FPRA state board of directors, including six years on the executive committee.

Gent earned his Accredited in Public Relations (APR) accreditation in 2010 and his Certified Public Relations Counselor (CPRC) designation in 2011.

Hired by KUA in 1993, Gent is responsible for the utility’s internal and external communications, including marketing, media and public relations, employee communications, special events and corporate philanthropy.

Kissimmee Main Street Announces 6th Annual Sculpture Experience Kissimmee FL – Kissimmee Main Street (KMS) has announced their 6th Annual Kissimmee Sculpture Experience and are calling all artists to display their sculptures in Historic Downtown Kissimmee for 2012-2013.

The Kissimmee Sculpture Experience is an exhibit of original outdoor sculptures that are displayed for a full year at various locations in Downtown Kissimmee.

“Part of our goal is to make Downtown Kissimmee an art and cultural center for Osceola County,” said Kelly Trace, KMS Executive Director. Last year this program generated over 3,000 unique visits to the Downtown area and gave a great boost to our businesses. We’re happy to offer this program again courtesy of our community partners who make it possible.”

Each artist chosen to participate in the 2012-2013 Sculpture Experience will receive a $500.00 award

and additionally, another $500.00 will go to the Best of Show. Each piece is loaned to the exhibit and available for purchase. Sculptors can submit up to three pieces for a minimal fee of $40.00. The Artists are afforded the opportunity to display their works of art in Kissimmee City Hall for three months. The display periods are as follows: November- January; February- April; May-July; AugustNovember.

The artwork will be available for public viewing on all five floors of City Hall on Monday –Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. A total of five artists will be selected to showcase their work for each quarter.

Comunidad / Community Osceola Heritage Park ayuda a recoger materiales escolares para el regreso a clases Kissimmee, FL – El 9 de agosto de 2012 un autobús escolar del Condado Osceola se estacionó en el Osceola Heritage Park para unirse a los representantes de Disney VoluntEARS, y celebrar la campaña de Regreso a Clases, evento que marca el inicio de las clases con un número record de donaciones de materiales escolares y mochilas, los cuales estarán de camino a estudiantes de las escuelas del Condado Osceola. A bordo de esta actividad estaban la Superintendente Melba Luciano y Mickey Mouse.

Los materiales escolares fueron todos donados por miembros del Disney Cast y Walt Disney World Resort, quienes recolectaron los materiales durante su evento anual de Back-to-School Supply Drive. Osceola Heritage Park Helps Collect Back to School Supplies Kissimmee, FL – On August 9, 2012 a big yellow Osceola County School bus pulled into Osceola Heritage Park joining Disney VoluntEARS to celebrate a Back to School drive event with a record number of school supplies and backpacks that are on the way to students across the schools of Osceola County. On board were Osceola County School Superintendent Melba Luciano and Mickey Mouse.

The supplies, all donated by Disney Cast Members and Walt Disney World Resort, were collected during the annual Back-to-School Supply Drive.

The initiative is part of Disney’s long-standing tradition of supporting school children in Central Florida from early learning through college.

“With the Back-to-School drive, our mission is to help set students up for success, even if it is one pencil at a time,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of community relations for Walt Disney World

Resort. “We not only want to make a difference for the students, but also inspire others to support and nurture the children who are the future of our community.”

• Individual recognition – achievement in academics and community service are recognized through the Disney Dreamers and Doers program; and

Osceola County Superintendent Melba Luciano was on hand to accept the donations and ring a bell celebrating the start of the upcoming school year. Orlando Magic Dancers 2012-13 Orlando, FL - The final audition for the 2012-13 Orlando Magic Dancers was held on Thursday, August 9. The 30 dancers competed for one of the 20 spots to represents the Orlando Magic. The finalists

performed their routines before a live audience and a distinguished panel of judges, including Johnny Magic from XL 106.7, entertainment photographer Michael Cairns and a Magic fan judge, Chili Fischbach.

The final team is comprised of 13 veterans and seven rookies.

Currently in their 24th season heading into the 2012-13 campaign, team members perform at all Orlando Magic

home games and appear at a combined total of over 250 events in and outside of Central Florida, such as entertaining our U.S. Troops overseas, community events and much more.

Ticonderoga Prang Power, the Glen Davis Foundation, UnitedHealthcare, PepsiCo, Amway, McDonald’s and Florida Blue. Additional event contributions were provided by Fox Sports Florida, Power 95.3, Star 94.5 and Florida Hospital.
