HBC - Noticias / News Hispanic Business Council otorga becas Condado Osceola, FL – El 9 de octubre de 2012 el Concilio Hispano de Negocios (HBC, siglas en inglés) de a Cámara de Comercio del Condado Kissimmee/Osceola otorgó sobre $3,000 en becas a estudiantes de Valencia College – Recinto de Osceola en conmemoración a la celebración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Las tres becas otorgadas para estudiantes de tiempo completo fueron: María Melendez - $1,000 AS - BS en Administración de Negocios; Jazmine Figueroa - $1,027 - AS en Enfermería RN; y Rosie Jiménez $1,027 - AA Grado Asociado. Para ser elegible para estas becas los estudiantes deben ser Hispanos, residentes de Osceola y estar matriculados en un programa relacionado con los negocios en el Valencia College. Pueden ser

Hispanic Business Council granted scholarships Osceola County, FL – On October 9th, 2012 the Hispanic Business Council (HBC) of the Kissimmee/ Osceola County Chamber of Commerce granted over $3,000 in scholarships awards to Valencia College – Osceola Campus students in commemoration of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. The three scholarships awarded to full time students where: María Melendez - $1,000 AS - BS in Business Administration;Jazmine Figueroa - $1,027 - AS in Nursing RN; and Rosie Jiménez - $1,027 - AA Associate in Arts Degree. To be eligible for these scholarships the students must be Hispanic, Osceola resident and enrolled in a business related program at Valencia College. The scholarship can be for new or returning students, with financial needs. Students must have applied for FAFSA. The scholarship awards may be use for tuition, books, and or fees. La Votación Adelantada comenzará en el Condado Osceola el 27 de octubre y continuará por ocho días, hasta el 3 de noviembre. Early Voting in Osceola County Osceola County, FL – Early Voting in Osceola County will kick off on October 27 and run for eight days until November 3. Registered voters may vote early during this time frame at the Supervisor of Elections’ Office or the Kissimmee, St. Cloud, Celebration, Poinciana, or Buenaventura Lakes’ libraries. We have extended the Early Voting hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and from Noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday. “Early Voting offers our voters more opportunities to vote,’’ said Supervisor of Elections Mary Jane Arrington. “We will be open the maximum number of hours allowed. Historically, at least 50 percent of the people who vote in an election vote early. We are anticipating that Early Voting for the General Election will follow that trend as well.’’ Arrington said even though the Legislature reduced the number of Early Voting days from 14 to eight, Early voting still offers voters more options to vote. “If someone lives in Celebration but works in St. Cloud, they have several different places they could vote their ballot. They could go to the St. Cloud library to vote, they could come to our
office, or if they pass by the Kissimmee library they could vote there or they could always vote at the Celebration library as well. Our Early Voting locations are conveniently placed throughout the county,’’ Arrington said. Arrington has also implemented a new program this year where voters can go to the Elections Office web site and check the wait times at the Early Voting locations. “If a voter wants to go to the Kissimmee Library but only has a set amount of time right then, he or she can go online to our web site and see what the wait time is at that library or any of the other Early Voting sites,’’ Arrington said. “This is just one way we are working to make the voting process easier for voters.’’ To check the wait times, a person will need to go to www.voteosceola. com and click on the button that says Early Voting Locations on the front page. All six sites will come up and the current wait time for that location will be displayed. Business - Noticias / News Horner presenta renuncia a su posición Kissimmee, FL – La Junta de Directores de la Cámara de Comercio de Kissimmee/ Osceola anunció que el pasado viernes, 12 de octubre de 2012 su Presidente Mike Horner presentó su renuncia efectivo el 31 de enero de 2013. Horner ha sido un líder transformador para la Cámara y la Junta quiere agradecerle sus excelentes logros. Horner ha dirigido la Cámara de Kissimmee por los pasados 15 años. Durante los 90 días de transición, el Sr. Horner permanecerá como Presidente de la Cámara. En adición al anuncio de su renuncia, Horner, también dio un discurso de 30 minutos, que recopilaba sus más importantes logros. Estos incluyeron la creación de varios Concilios de la Cámara, OLE, donde líderes de negocios dedicados a negociar legislación para traer más fondos e incentivos con el fin de mejorar el Condado Osceola, incluyendo escuelas, negocios, educación, transportación, infraestructura y más. Uno de los concilios creado por Horner fue (ORAC), Concilio de Área Turística de Osceola, que se convirtió en la voz representativa de la industria del turismo en Osceola, especialmente en la 192, incluyendo hoteles,

A través de los años el concepto ha cambiado de Conexión Hispana a El Sabor de Osceola, hasta lo que conocemos ahora como Business Under the Stars (Negocios bajo las Estrellas). Hace 13 años Horner, junto con Hansen, se presentó ante la Comisión del Condado

El pasado sábado 12 de octubre, se celebraron 21 años de Viva Osceola, el festival gratuito más grande y más antiguo del Condado Osceola y Sur de Orlando. Si no fuera por Horner y Hansen, el evento de Viva Osceola hubiese acabado hace 14 años, cuando otra entidad no pudo manejar el festival. El HBC y la Cámara de Comercio han hecho posible que este festival se siga celebrando. Como Representante de Estado, Mike Horner, también demostró su apoyo a la comunidad hispana, llevando iniciativas como la del HBIF y asegurándose que los hispanos de Osceola no se quedaran sin representación en Tallahassee. Horner Provides Notice to Resign From Position Kissimmee, FL – The Kissimmee/ Osceola County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors announced on Friday, October 12, 2012, the notice of resignation of Mike Horner as President for the Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce on January 31, 2013. Mr. Horner has been a transformational leader for the Chamber and the Board wants to thank him for his outstanding service. Horner has successfully led the Kissimmee Chamber for the past 15 years. During the 90 days transition, Mr. Horner will remain President of the Chamber. In addition to announcing his resignation, Horner also gave a 30 minute briefing of his most significant accomplishments. These included the creation of the Chamber’s Councils, OLE, a group of chambers and business leaders dedicated to lobbying the legislation to bring more funds and incentives for the betterment of Osceola, including schools, business, education, transportation, infrastructure and more. They also started the Hispanic Business Development Center, which later became the Small Business Development Center, and brought the University of Central like HBIF funding. Gala Osceola Florida Small Business was created 14 Development Center to years ago as the Chamber providing a way to recognize the Hispanic support to small businesses. Valencia College - Noticias / News $40,000 en becas ayudarán a estudiantes México-americanos de la Florida Central Orlando, FL – La donación del Consulado de México ayudará a crear $40,000 en becas para que estudiantes México-americanos e internacionales puedan asistir al Seminole State College de la Florida, Valencia College y Daytona State College. El martes, 9 de octubre durante una ceremonia en el Consulado Mexicano de Orlando, se le otorgó un total de $20,000, que será pareado por la fundación de la institución, a colegios universitarios. Comunidad / Community Ceremonia de Dedicación del Hospital Nemours Children Orlando, FL- Antes de que el Nemours Children’s Hospital abra oficialmente para los pacientes y sus familias el 22 de octubre, la nueva moderna facilidad en Lake Nona Medical City llevó a cabo su Ceremonia de Dedicación y su evento de Encendido el jueves 4 de octubre. Nemours brinda especialidades pediátricas únicas al estado y a la región. La Ceremonia de Dedicación fue un evento privado que honró a los padres de la Florida Central que ayudaron a diseñar el hospital y se presentó un pequeño programa, el cual incluyó una parada de cerca de 100 niños que ya se han beneficiado de la presencia de Nemours en la Florida Central. Esta terminó con un grupo de niños corriendo hacia una pared de ‘silly string’ y hacia el hospital por primera vez.
Al atardecer esa noche, la Florida Central vio por primera vez una de las más dramáticas nuevas incorporaciones de la línea de la ciudad de la región: las icónicas luces de colores de los cuartos de los pacientes de Nemours. Durante el evento privado de Encendido del

Nemours Children’s Hospital Dedication Ceremony Orlando, FL- Before Nemours Children’s Hospital officially opens to patients and families on Oct. 22, the new, state-of-the-art facility in Lake Nona Medical City held its Dedication Ceremony and Light Up Nemours event on Thursday, Oct. 4. Nemours is bringing unique pediatric specialties to the state and the region.
The Dedication Ceremony was a private event that honored the Central Florida parents who helped design the hospital and featured a brief program, which included a parade of nearly 100 children who have already benefited from Nemours’ presence in Central Florida. It ended with a group of children running through a wall of
‘silly string’ and into the hospital for the first time. At sunset that night, Central Florida saw one of the most dramatic new additions to the region’s skyline for the first time: the iconic colored lights in the Nemours’ patient rooms. During the private Light Up Nemours event, children “flip” gigantic light switches
at an event held in partnership with OUC. With the hospital so close to the airport and S.R. 417, these lights are sure to become a recognized feature of the evening skyline as you fly into OIA. The colored lights are a unique element in the patient rooms – giving children the ability to choose the color of their room and a sense of control over their environment.

Entre los que están batallando para probar que merecen estar en el equipo están los defensas DeQuan Jones, E’Twaun Moore y Armon Jonson. Last Friday against the 76ers, no one really separated themselves from the rest. Moore and Jones got the majority of the minutes from the group which could be an indicator of which way coach Jacque Vaughn is leaning, but it is hard to say with the amount of experimentation that goes on in the preseason. The new big men Nikola Vucevic, Andrew Nicholson, and Gustavo Ayon made more of an impact than the guards against the 76ers. The leading scorer and rebounder was Glenn Davis with 16 and 12 and second year player from USC by way of Montenegro, Nikola Vucevic, made a case to be in the regular season rotation with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The 19th pick for the Magic in the draft, Andrew Nicholson, demonstrated what we can expect from the 6’9 forward, scoring 14 points and grabbing 3 rebounds. The physics major has brains and brawn and demonstrates it on the court. He can post up smaller players down with his 250lb frame, take bigger ones off the dribble, and also has a smooth jumper. The game was tight the entire way and came down to the last minutes of the 4th quarter. In the end the Magic did not have a go to scorer and that cost them in what resulted in a 7 point loss. The Monday night game against the Cavs was a similar story. Glen Davis was the leading scorer with 27 points
while Nikola Vucevic chipped in with 10 points and 3 rebounds. The game was close throughout as coaches were not paying attention to the score but were evaluating the players and how they play against NBA talent. In this game we got to see a lot more of what we can expect from the young guns. DeQuan Jones put up 7 points and 9 rebounds while E’Twaun Moore had a breakout preseason game with 15 points and 7 assists in 29 minutes. JJ Redick had 18 points and 8 assists and Andrew Nicholson once again demonstrated reliability and consistency with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Although the Magic were down 6 points going into the 4th quarter, they fought back and tied it up at the end of regulation. Glen Davis had an opportunity to with the game but missed an 18 foot jump shot. In overtime, the Magic struggled to find a go-to-scorer and only had 2 field goals. The Cleveland Cavaliers won a close game, 111-114, with Kyrie Irving scoring 22 for the Cavaliers and going 11-11 from the free throw line. Coach Vaughn went deep into the bench on Tuesday against the Detroit Pistons and did not have any of last games starters dress up. This allowed him to experiment with his new players. DeQuan Jones led the team with 22 points along with Gustavo Ayon who put up a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Newcomer Josh McRoberts from Duke and rookie Kyle O’Quinn both struggled and never got into a good rhythm. E’Twaun Moore contributed with 9 points and 6 assists and Armon Johnson had 10 points and 4 assists. The team was efficient from the field but the Detroit shot almost 48% from 3 point territory and this game was over before it began with the Pistons winning 112-86.
