Puerto Rico - Noticias / News Cámara Federal aprueba enmiendas sobre Puerto Rico Washington, D.C. - La Cámara de Representantes aprobó una pieza legislativa que mejorará el trato que reciben los veteranos puertorriqueños bajo la H.R. 1960, el Acta de Autorización de Defensa Nacional (NDAA) para este año fiscal 2014.

Grayson dijo que la enmienda es un paso importante para medir el daño ambiental y los asuntos de salud que se han reportado en Vieques.

Grayson presentó la enmienda con la finalidad de asegurarse que los puertorriqueños reciban el mismo trato que los norteamericanos bajo la H.R. 1960 la cual establece la Comisión del Servicio a la Nación. La comisión estudia los efectos de la guerra en los miembros de las fuerzas armadas y sus familias y ayuda a los soldados y a sus esposas en la transición de la vida militar a la vida civil. La H.R. 1960 requiere que esta nueva comisión sostenga audiencias en cada estado, pero no incluye un requerimiento legal para que dicho procedimiento se realice en Puerto Rico.

Grayson dijo que tal omisión es inaceptable. “Puerto Rico tiene más de 100,000 residentes que son veteranos del ejército de Estados Unidos-más veteranos que en Alaska, Rhode Island, D.C., Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Vermont y Delaware. Estos hombres y mujeres valientes han servido con honor a nuestra nación y por ello se merecen el mismo acceso a este recurso tan importante”.

La enmienda de Grayson, la cual fue co-auspiciada por el Comisionado Residente de Puerto Rico en D.C., Pedro R. Pierluisi, aseguraría que los veteranos en Guam, las Islas Vírgenes, el Estado Libre Asociado de las Islas Marianas del Norte y la Samoa Americana puedan tener una audiencia convocada por la misma comisión.

Por otro lado, Grayson unió fuerzas con Pierluisi en otra enmienda relacionada a la isla de Vieques. Vieques fue el epicentro de bombardeos y prácticas bélicas durante 6 décadas, lo que ha provocado una crisis socio-económica en la isla, una alta incidencia de cáncer y otros problemas serios de salud entre sus habitantes.

La enmienda de Pierluisi requiere que el Departamento de Defensa conduzca una revisión exhaustiva de los récords militares y provea un reporte que detalle el tipo de municiones encontradas en las islas, la cantidad de municiones y dónde fueron utilizadas.

Grayson supports and helps Puerto Rico in two amendments Washington, DC - Congressman Alan Grayson (FL-09) passed legislation improving the treatment of Puerto Rico under H.R. 1960, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014 (NDAA).

Grayson first passed an amendment ensuring equal treatment of Puerto Ricans under H.R. 1960, which establishes the Commission on Service to the Nation. The commission will study the effect of warfare on members of the Armed Forces and their families, and aid servicemen and service women in their transition from military to civilian life. H.R. 1960 requires that this new commission hold hearings in each state—but did not include a requirement to conduct a hearing in Puerto Rico.

Grayson said that omission was unacceptable. “Puerto Rico has more than 100,000 residents that are veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces— more veterans than Alaska, Rhode Island, D.C., Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Vermont, and Delaware. These brave men and women have served our nation honorably, and they deserve equal access to this incredibly important resource,” he said.

Grayson’s amendment, which was cosponsored by Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi, would also ensure that veterans in Guam, the U.S. Virgin

Islands, The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa, would also have a hearing conducted by the commission.

Grayson also teamed up with Pierluisi on an amendment related to the island of Vieques. Vieques was the site of bombing and military exercises for six decades, which have prompted a socioeconomic crisis on the island, and resulted in high instances of cancer and other serious health-related problems amongst its inhabitants.

In a letter on May 8th, the Social Security Chief Actuary stated that the bipartisan Senate immigration bill will strengthen the solvency of the Social Security Trust Fund in the short run and the long run by reforming the legal immigration system and increasing by millions the number of currentlyundocumented workers who will be paying payroll taxes. The Chief Actuary wrote, “Overall, we anticipate that the net effect of this bill on the long-range OASDI [Social Security] actuarial balance will be positive.”

Because most immigrants are young, additional immigration helps balance out the increase in retireesper-worker that will occur as the Baby Boom generation retires.

Valencia drops fee for re-enrolling Orlando, FL - Students drop out of college for lots of reasons: Work, family. But if a student dropped out of Valencia College at some point, it’s a great time to pick up where they left off. Valencia is currently offering former students a financial incentive to come back to college: Attend one of Valencia’s Welcome Back Open House events and Valencia will not charge the $35 admission fee.

Gout, which is one of the most painful forms of arthritis, is caused by a build-up of crystals of uric acid in a joint. Alcohol can lead to increased production of uric acid so it puts you at a higher risk of getting gout.

Alcohol leads to gout in multiple ways: • It contains purines, proteins that are broken down into uric acid. Purines are found naturally in your body and in some foods.

• It promotes dehydration which raises the uric-acid level in the blood.

• It leads to the production of lactic acid, which can increase the level of uric acid.

• It stimulates enzymes in the liver that break down proteins to produce more uric acid.

Often, gout affects joints in the lower part of the body such as the ankles, heels, knees, and especially the big toes. However, it can also attack the elbows, wrists and fingers.

Pseudogout has similar symptoms and is sometimes confused with gout.

However, it is caused by calcium phosphate, not uric acid.

Gout is more common in men. Men are more likely to develop gout in their forties. Women generally get gout after menopause.

Early attacks usually subside within 3 to 10 days, even without treatment, and the next attack may not occur for months or even years. Uric acid buildup can lead to kidney stones. Untreated gout can cause permanent joint and kidney damage.

Most people with gout are able to control their symptoms with treatment.

The most common treatments are high doses of oral non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, or corticosteroids, which are taken by mouth or injected into the affected joint. Patients often begin to improve within a few hours of treatment.

Deputies discover methamphetamine lab while serving felony warrant Osceola County, FL - On June 11 at approximately 7:40 p.m. Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Budgetel Motel located at 4104 West Vine Street in an attempt to locate a wanted person. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with Debra Scanlon who had an active felony warrant for Dealing in Stolen Property and Violation of Secondary Metals Recycler. When she opened the door, deputies could see several

syringes in the room. She and another occupant, George Linkel gave permission for deputies to enter the room and they located heroin and what appeared to be materials consistent with manufacturing methamphetamine.

Deputies contacted the Osceola County Investigative Bureau (OCIB) and Kissimmee Police Department to continue the investigation.

Based on the evidence, Linkel was arrested

for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Scanlon was arrested on an outstanding felony warrant.

The investigation began in August of last year when detectives received information of possible illegal activity at an IP address on the CenturyLink network.

After further investigation, detectives discovered Colon used the IP address to download pornographic movies involving children. On February 18, detectives obtained a search warrant for his residence located at 905

Dartmouth Court in Poinciana. They took into evidence multiple computers and electronic storage devices.

Colon was brought in for questioning and cooperated with the investigation. He told detectives he downloaded the videos out of curiosity but he knew they were illegal. According to Colon, he does not know any of the children depicted in the videos.
