When breast cancer starts out, it is too small to feel and does not cause signs and symptoms. As it grows, breast cancer can cause changes in how the breast looks or feels.

Symptoms may include: New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit); thickening or swelling of part of the breast; irritation or dimpling of breast skin; redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast; pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area; nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood; any change in the size or the shape of the breast and pain in any area of the breast.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. Doctors use a mammogram to look for early signs of breast cancer.

Having mammograms regularly can lower your risk of dying from breast cancer. If you are 50 to 74 years old, be sure to have a screening mammogram every two years. If you are 40 to 49 years old, talk to your doctor about when and how often you should have a screening mammogram.

Osceola Schools - Noticias / News Celebración de la Herencia Hispana en la noche del Concilio de Liderato de Padres ESOL Kissimmee, FL, - El jueves 8 de octubre, el Departamento de Educación Multicultural del Distrito Escolar del Condado Osceola celebró una noche de información y festividad con motivo del Mes de la Hispanidad en la Escuela Elemental Kissimmee. Los padres de los estudiantes del programa ESOL del distrito fueron invitados a participar de esta actividad.

Hubo exhibiciones de programas y organizaciones de la comunidad. Todos los asistentes obtuvieron valiosa información visitando los kioscos. Hispanic Heritage Celebration at ESOL Parent Leadership Council Night Kissimmee, FL, - The Multicultural Education Department of Osceola County Schools District had an informational night and a celebration of the Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday, October 8 at Kissimmee Elementary School.

All parents of ESOL students in the district were invited to participate.

They have exhibitions of programs, schools, departments, and community organizations. Those who attended received important information going through the booths. During the event there was child care and simultaneous Spanish, Haitian Creole, and French interpretation provided. The first 100 ESOL families that arrived to the event received a free backpack for alphabetization. As part of the program they have a Parade of Flags by 4th and 5th grade students from the Kissimmee Elementary School.

The purpose of the event was to encourage parental involvement and participation in the English Language Learner (ELL) students’ educational programming and academic achievement. The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program serves students who have been identified as English Language Learners (ELLs). The students are enrolled in the appropriate grade level courses of Language Arts/ESOL, Math Science, and Social Studies.

ELL students are introduced to the various cultural aspects of American society to facilitate their transition into the community life of their new country.

Disability Mentoring in FTC Kissimmee, FL, - A special event was held on October 9 at Florida Technical College (FTC) in Kissimmee to bring awareness to Disability Mentoring Day (DMD). The event hosted by FTC was sponsored by the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD), the Able Trust, the Florida Department

of Education Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and Orange County Public Schools.

As part of Florida’s Disability Awareness Month, the meeting was geared to boost public awareness of disability employment, including recruitment, hiring, training, advancement, and

retention. It will also help to spotlight the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities.

Although DMD officially falls on October 16, the event is being held a week earlier to avoid conflicts with mentoring sessions.

White House officials say fixes were begin made, although they have been unable to say how many consumers have enrolled in plans through the website. Consumers continue to have difficulty enrolling in the health care insurance exchange, but do not worry do you have plenty of time to do it.

There are key dates you’ll want to mark on your calendar: October 1, 2013: Marketplace open enrollment started; January 1, 2014: Health coverage can start; and March 31, 2014: Open enrollment ends.

If you enroll in a health insurance plan any time between October 1, 2013 and December 15, 2013 and make your first premium payment, your new health coverage starts January 1, 2014.

During the rest of open enrollment, if you enroll between the 1st and 15th day of the month and pay your premium, your coverage begins the first day of the next month. So if you enroll on February 10, 2014, your coverage begins March 1, 2014. If you enroll between the 16th and the last day of the month and pay your premium, your effective date of coverage will be the first day of the second following month. So if you enroll on February 16, 2014, your coverage starts on April 1, 2014.

Orlando, FL - College Night 2013, to be held at Valencia College on Oct. 15 and 17, gives Central Florida high school and college transfer students a chance to meet representatives from colleges and universities across the country.

More than 100 admissions representatives from colleges and universities across the country will be present for this two-night event, which will be held at Valencia College’s East and Osceola campuses.

Students can meet with representatives from colleges and universities around the country, including Yale, Cornell, Morehouse, Notre Dame and the University of Florida, as well as local schools including Valencia, University of Central Florida, Rollins, Florida Southern

and Stetson. Military recruiters will also be on hand to answer questions.

In addition to meeting representatives from colleges, students can get information on everything from admissions requirements to financial aid, degrees and programs offered, plus information about campus housing.

College Night 2013 will be held Tuesday, Oct. 15 on Valencia’s Osceola Campus and Thursday, Oct. 17 on Valencia’s East Campus. Both events run from 6-8 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

KUA Board elects officers, welcomes member KIssimmee, FL - Kissimmee Utility Authority’s board of directors made history with its election of officers and the installation of its newest member.

During its regular monthly meeting, Reginald Hardee was elected chairman of the five-member volunteer board, making him the first AfricanAmerican to serve in that position in the authority’s 28-year history.

Jeanne Van Meter was elected vice chairman. Dr. George Gant was re-elected secretary, and Kathleen Thacker was re-elected assistant secretary.

Kissimmee realtor Ethel Urbina took the oath of office as the board’s first Hispanic woman and second Hispanic to serve. Former director Domingo Toro retired from the utility board in 2007 after a decade of service.

“We are very pleased to welcome another highly qualified citizen to the board, particularly an individual

who helps reflect the diversity of our community,” said Hardee. “It’s certainly fitting that during National Hispanic Heritage Month we have installed our first female Hispanic board member.”

The utility’s five-member board of directors sets policy direction for the utility. Specifically, the board approves annual budgets, sets rates and approves major purchases. The board also directs a general manager who is responsible for day-to-day operations of the utility.

Hardee is the district information system manager for Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise and brings nearly 20 years of strategic planning and budgeting experience to the chairman position.

He joined the board in 2007 and has served as director, assistant secretary, secretary and vice chairman. In 2011, Hardee was appointed by the American Public Power Association to a three-year term on its national Policy Makers Council.

Kissimmee Sculpture Experience Artist’s Reception Kissimmee, FL - Kissimmee Main Street honored 18 sculptors at the 2012-2013 Kissimmee Sculpture Experience Artist’s Reception held at Gallery One Artists on Sept 27.

Kissimmee Main Street was honored to have 20 loaned sculptures during the sixth annual Kissimmee Sculpture Experience, which was double the amount of sculptures from the previous year.

During the reception, Kissimmee Main Street Executive Director, Brianne Stefek, thanked all of the volunteers and sponsors, including Gallery One Artists for hosting the event and.

Jonathan Bowling was named the People’s Choice Award winner for his sculpture “Old Heifer”, while Dennis Howland took home the Kid’s Choice Award for his sculpture “Evolution of Angels and Birds”. The night’s biggest award, the Phyllis Ross Best in Show Award, along with a $500 prize was awarded to artist Adam Bodine for his piece “What You Say”. Guests who attended the reception had the chance to walk around and view the artwork before they were uninstalled the next morning.

The stakes get higher on Univision’s dance competition “¡Mira Quién Baila!”

Miami, FL - TThe routines are becoming more demanding, the celebrity contestants are revving up their performance techniques, and the gala shows are getting more spectacular every week on Season 4 of Univision’s enormously popular reality show/dance competition, “¡Mira Quién Baila!” (Look Who’s Dancing!). As the stakes continue to rise in this thrilling challenge that will award $185,000 in cash to the winner’s chosen charity, viewers can expect more nail-biting excitement and dazzling entertainment with every new show until the grand finale in November.

After Regional Mexican music sensation El Dasa was forced to leave the competition due to an injury, nine Hispanic celebrities were left to battle it out on the dance floor: famed Mexican singer/songwriter Graciela Beltrán; singer, dancer, former Menudo member and current co-host of Univision’s “Despierta

América” (Wake Up America) morning show, Johnny Lozada; singer and telenovela star Mane de la Parra; tropical music artist Manny Manuel; telenovela actresses Malillany Marín, María Elisa Camargo and Marjorie de Sousa; Cuban-born telenovela hearthrob Pedro Moreno; and renowned Puerto Rican singer Yolandita Monge. On the second week of eliminations, Graciela Beltran and Yolandita Monge were up for elimination.

The past Sunday, October 6, “¡Mira Quién Baila!” broadcast featured a guest appearance by superstar Prince Royce. In a rare television moment, Univision’s Johnny Lozada teamed up with his former band members from the famous pop group Menudo, René, Ray, Ricky, and Charlie, to perform “Subete a mi moto” for María Elisa Camargo’s dance number. Then the show revealed that Graciela Beltran was voted off the show by the viewing

fans.and during the week Yolandita Monge makes the decision of abandon the competition. Malillany Marín and Manny Manuel were nominated to leave the show on the following week.

Then, on Sunday, October 13, “¡Mira Quién Baila!” will pay homage to the late Regional Mexican music divas, Selena and Jenni Rivera, in a moving tribute featuring special guests A.B. Quintanilla, Selena’s brother, and Rivera’s daughter, Chiqui. The eight remaining celebrity contenders will show off their best moves –in diverse dance styles– to the sounds of some of the beloved megastars’ most unforgettable hits. Once again, two contestants will be threatened for elimination by the competition’s celebrity judges, Bianca Marroquín, Horacio Villalobos, and Ninel Conde; fans at home will have the final say by casting their votes before the next episode airs.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office received the McConnell Men Memorial Award, an award created to honor the memory of Roy McConnell and his three sons who were killed by a drunk driver in August of 2010.

Deputy Michael Hilley, Deputy James Lamb and Sgt. Donald Macallaster received the 100+ LifeSavers Award

Kissimmee Police arrest man for armed robbery Kissimmee, FL - Kissimmee police officers arrested a man for armed robbery of the Metro PCS store located at 715 East Vine Street in Kissimmee.

The suspect fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one inside the store was injured during the incident.

On October 6, 2013 at approximately 1:45 p.m. officers responded to the Metro PCS store in reference to an armed robbery.

Officers learned that a Hispanic male walked inside, approached the clerk with his hand in his pocket said “Give me the money.” The clerk did not see a gun, but assumed

Deportes / Sports Aprueban financiamiento de estadio de fútbol Orlando, FL - La Junta de Comisionados de la Ciudad de Orlando votó a favor de la aprobación de los fondos para un nuevo estadio multiusos de fútbol en el centro de la ciudad. El voto lleva al club un paso más adelante para traer una franquicia de la Liga Profesional de Fútbol (MLS, por sus siglas en inglés) a Orlando. Con el voto de los Comisionados del Condado Orange el 22 de octubre es la etapa final para obtener el financiamiento del estadio.

“Esto es obviamente un gran paso hacia nuestro objetivo de atraer a la MLS”, dijo el presidente del Orlando City, Phil Rawlins. “Estoy encantado de tener a la ciudad de parte de nosotros, así que ahora puedo concentrarme en la segunda votación, que está a sólo dos semanas de distancia.”

Commissioners approve funding for soccer stadium Orlando, FL - The City of Orlando Board of Commissioners voted through the approval of funds for a new downtown, multi-purpose soccer stadium. The vote moves the club one step closer toward bringing a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise to Orlando, with the Orange County Commissioners vote on October 22 the final stage in completion of stadium funding.

“This is obviously a very big step toward our goal of bringing MLS,” said Orlando City President Phil Rawlins. “I am delighted to have the City behind

us so we can now focus on the second vote that is only two weeks away.”

Supporters came out to the event to show the support of the vote, which was unanimous among the six Commissioners and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. The vote approved the use of Tourist Development Tax (TDT) funds for multiple venues, including a soccer stadium.

“There are significant days in our community and this is one of them,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

“Hopefully we have another one later this month.“

Desfile Puertorriqueño / Puerto Rican Parade En noviembre, Osceola celebrará el tercer Desfile Puertorriqueño de la Florida Kissimmee, FL - En tan sólo dos años, el Desfile Puertorriqueño de la Florida, anteriormente conocido como el Desfile Puertorriqueño de Osceola, se ha consagrado como el más importante en todo el estado, logrando reunir a las figuras más destacadas de la política y el entretenimiento. El 4 de octubre, los organizadores del evento sostuvieron una rueda de prensa para anunciar las nuevas características del desfile.

En su tercer aniversario los organizadores han decidido reinventarse. A diferencia del año pasado, el evento se celebrará el 3 de noviembre en el Osceola Heritage Park en Kissimmee. El desfile será en el mes en que se conmemora la fecha del descubrimiento de Puerto Rico. Además contará con la estrecha colaboración del gobierno de la isla, funcionarios electos y artistas de

Osceola will celebrate the 3rd Puerto Rican Day Parade Kissimmee, FL - In just two years, the Puerto Rican Parade of Florida, formerly known as the Puerto Rican Day Parade in Osceola, has established itself as the most important statewide managed to bring together leading figures from politics and entertainment. On, October 4th the promoters of this event held a press conference to announce the new features of the event.

In its third anniversary, the organizers have decided to reinvent

itself. Unlike last year, the event will be held on November, 3th at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee.

This month marks the date of the discovery of Puerto Rico, plus the parade will have close collaboration with the government of the island, elected officials, internationally renowned artists among other surprises.

Two days of celebrations will precede the parade. On November
