Osceola Regional leads community crusade against heart disease Kissimmee, FL - Every 34 seconds, someone in the United States is diagnosed with heart disease. In fact, it’s estimated that nearly 800,000 Americans will die of cardiovascular disease this year, making it the leading cause of death for both men and women. In light of the statistics and in honor of National Heart Month, Osceola Regional Medical Center is dedicating the entire month of February to raising cardiovascular disease awareness within its community. During this month, the hospital will hold a series of educational seminars, screenings and community events to bring attention to the deadly disease. On February 7th, the hospital will participate in National Wear Red Day. Hospital employees will be encouraged to wear red to show support and solidarity for the American Heart Association’s ‘Go Red For Women’ movement. Osceola Regional will also hold two free educational seminars for the community. The first will be held at the hospital, the second will be held in Hunter’s Creek. During the luncheons, cardiologists will discuss topic on heart disease treatment and prevention. Throughout the month, the hospital will also be offering free cardiac risk profile screenings. These screenings will check for Total Cholesterol, HDL/LDL Cholesterol, Triglycerides and Glucose levels. Each of these factors is directly linked to a person’s risk for heart disease. Throughout the past year, Osceola Regional has made a big push to encourage local residents to be proactive about heart health. “School Choice Week” in Florida wraps up Tallahassee, FL - If Florida parents want to choose new schools for their children for the upcoming (2014-2015) school year, they need to start researching the schooling options available to their children right away. Kissimmee Police host Hispanic Civilian Academy Kissimmee, FL The Kissimmee Police Department will be hosting a Hispanic Civilian Police Academy starting March 12, 2014. The purpose of the academy is to build a partnership between the citizens and their Police Department. Police Chief Lee Massie said, “An important key to crime prevention is to promote a greater understanding of law enforcement through positive interaction and education. I believe one way this can be accomplished is through the Civilian Academy”. Citizens will learn a variety of aspects of the Police Department and criminal justice in general. Participants will learn about criminal investigations, crime scenes, narcotics, and community relations just to name a few. Everyone will be able to get hands-on training with the S.W.A.T. team and firearms training with certified instructors.
All classes will be taught by Spanish speaking officers and personnel, or through translators. The Academy will start on March 12, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kissimmee Police Department. Classes will be held every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks. The Academy will end with a graduation celebration. Residents interested in attending this Academy should contact Problem Oriented Policing Unit at (407) 518-2400. Applications can be picked up at Kissimmee Police Department or on-line at police.kissimmee. org and are required to reserve a spot in the class. Class size is limited. The 2014 season kicks off for Orlando on March 22 in South Carolina against the Charleston Battery at Blackbaud

At this point, reaching 20 wins will be impressive. With still a lot of season left, it could happen. Last Friday, Orlando hosted the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks currently hold the worst record in the league with 9 wins and 40 losses. Thankfully, the Magic were able to pull out a win. Orlando’s bench saw more minutes this game and unlike previous games, were able to contribute. Kyle O’Quinn had eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal in his 17 minutes. Tobias Harris had 18 points and six rebounds while E’Twaun Moore had 13 points, an assist and two steals. In previous games, the Magic reserves have not performed. The 113 to 102 win is one the Magic needed before the very physical games that they faced next. The Orlando Magic flew up north to play in Boston. The Celtics are always a physical team. Jameer Nelson did not travel with the team due to a sore left knee. Starting for the Magic would be Glen Davis, Tobias Harris, Nike Vucevic, Arron Afflalo and Victor Oladipo. All of Orlando’s starters would end the game with double digit points but it wasn’t enough to close the game with a win. Boston shot at 50% for the game and were able to out-rebound Orlando. Putting this 89 to 96 loss behind them, the Magic traveled to Indiana to take on the Indiana Pacers.
Coaches picked Brooklyn’s Joe Johnson instead of that Arron Afflalo to play the East in the All Star The Pacers are ranked number one in East and number two in the league. By half time, it looked like it would be a blow out. Indiana forced Orlando to take tough shots leaving them at a 39 field goal percentage. They also out-rebounded Orlando and took the 98 to 79 victory. By the time the Magic returned home to play Detroit, they were able to focus on their mistakes. Jameer Nelson started for this game and Victor Oladipo came off the bench. The Magic took better shots, were physical on defense and passed the ball much more efficiently than I’ve seen all season. This paid off with a 112 to 98 win. The Magic have just three games left before the All Star break, all very tough teams including
Oklahoma City, Indiana and Memphis all at the Amway Center. I had previously reported that Arron Afflalo would be playing as a reserve for the East in the All Star game but coaches picked Brooklyn’s Joe Johnson. While stats don’t go in his favor, his team’s record might have more to do with it. The only Magic player participating will be Victor Oladipo in the Rising Stars game. With just two weeks left before the trade deadline, it’s still unclear if the Magic will act. Last season General Manager, Rob Hennigan, kept very quiet and traded at the very last minute. The only thing that is for sure is that the Magic are still going through this painful rebuilding period. With multiple draft picks next season, things will certainly be looking up.
