Día de Reyes en Osceola / Three King’s Day in Osceola Día de los Tres Reyes en Osceola Condado Osceola, FL – Por séptimo año el Concilio Hispano de Negocios de la Cámara de Comercio del Condado Kissimmee/Osceola estará llevando a cabo el Día de los Tres Reyes en Osceola. Celebrado en muchos países del mundo y en la mayoría de América Latina, el Día de los Tres Reyes, es una festividad reconocida por diferentes culturas, como una manera de recordar cuando los Tres Reyes Magos, trajeron sus regalos de oro, incienso y mirra al Niño Jesús. La celebración de los Tres Reyes tendrá lugar el sábado, 7 de enero de 2012 de 11:00 a.m. a 3:00 p.m. en Gateway High School en el 93 Panther Paws Tr. (Bill Beck Blvd) en Kissimmee, FL 34744. La celebración del Día de los Tres Reyes incluye bicicletas gratis. Uno de los momentos más excitantes para los niños en el evento es la rifa gratuita de una bicicleta nueva cada 5 minutos. Three King’s Day Celebration in Oscela Osceola County, FL – For the seventh year the Hispanic Business Council of the Kissimmee/ Osceola County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Three King’s Day in Osceola. Celebrated in many countries of the world and most of Latin America, the Three King’s Day, or El Día de los Reyes is a holiday recognized by different cultures, as a way to remember the three Wise Men or Kings, as they brought their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to baby Jesus. The Three King’s Day celebration will take place on January 7th, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Gateway High School at 93 Panther Paws Tr. (Bill Beck Blvd) in Kissimmee, FL 34744. Three King’s Day celebration will include FREE BICYCLES. One of the most exciting moments for the kids at the event is the free raffle of a brand new bicycle every 5 minutes, over a 100 bicycles will be given away.

The Feast of the Three Kings also known as the Epiphany takes place every year on January 6th. It is part of Latin folklore. Traditionally, this day is very important, especially for children, for it is on this eve that they will receive their gifts. On the Feast of the Epiphany, the three kings visited the newly born Christ Child in Bethlehem bearing him gifts. This tradition is repeated and reflected in present day with the belief that on this eve the 3 Kings will visit every good child to deliver them gifts. Tradition
states that on the Eve of the Epiphany children collect hay, straw or grass and place it in boxes or containers under their beds. This gesture is a gift of food for the King’s Camels while they rest in between deliveries. If a child is good for the past year he will receive toys. If the child was misbehaved or naughty he would instead find a lump of dirt or charcoal in his box. This tradition is much older than that of Santa’s visit on Christmas Eve.

Kissimmee installs charger point stations for electric vehicles Kissimmee, FL - The City of Kissimmee is the recipient of the Chargepoint America Grant. This is a federally funded program, through the Department of Energy, designed to begin the deployment of electric vehicle public infrastructure. The objective is to address a problem the automotive industry has coined as “charge anxiety,” by providing an adequate network of charging stations in public access areas, specifically for electric vehicles. The grant covered the cost of three charging stations, valued at $25,500. The cost associated with the installation was approximately $8,000. This was paid for through a partnership with the Toho Water Authority and the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency.

Los estudiantes serán despachados de la escuela durante ese día en horario regular, como lo hacen los lunes, martes, jueves y viernes. “El extender el horario este miércoles durante el examen, permitirá más flexibilidad para el itinerario del examen en todas las escuelas”, expresó el superintendente Terry Andrews. “Las escuelas tendrán ahora opciones para ofrecer más oportunidades de recesos entre las diferentes sesiones del examen, permitiéndoles a los estudiantes a estirarse, relajarse y a volver

Students get ready! FCAT testing, Wednesday, April 18 Osceola County, FL - The Osceola County School District is planning ahead for the upcoming spring administration of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) by allowing students to have a full day of school on the testing Wednesday, which is usually an earlyrelease day for students. As such, parents should be advised that there will be no early release of students on Wednesday, April 18, 2012. Students will be dismissed from school that day as they normally would on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. “By lengthening this Wednesday during testing, it allows for more flexibility of the school-wide testing schedule,” said Superintendent Terry
Andrews. “Schools will now have options to build in more opportunities for breaks between the different testing sessions to allow students to stretch, relax, and refocus. We want to provide every advantage to our students.” Osceola students will take the FCAT exam beginning on April 16 and ending on April 27, 2012. Superintendent Andrews offers the following tips to parents to help their children make the test-taking process more manageable: Become Knowledgeable About The Test: The FCAT test assesses a child’s knowledge of the Sunshine State Standards at a particular pointin-time. It is simply a measuring stick to see how much that they have

Parents are encouraged to ask their child’s teacher and principal questions about the test as they arise. Ensure A Good Night Sleep and Attendance: Make sure that your child is in school during the testing sessions. Students should get plenty of rest the night before, and on the morning of the test, make sure your child wakes up in plenty of time so the student does not feel rushed. Provide A Healthy Breakfast: Be sure to give your child a good breakfast. Studies show that students
who have eaten a healthy breakfast score much better on tests than those students who are hungry and unable to fully concentrate during tests. Cell Phones/Electronic Devices: Students may not have any electronic or recording device at their desk, in their pockets, or anywhere they can be reached during testing, even if they are turned off or not used. Students found with any electronic device during the test will have their test invalidated. Encourage Your Child To Do His/ Her Best: Remind your student that they have studied and worked hard all year, and they have every reason to feel confident that they will be successful. Encourage children to relax and do their best.

New year, new classes at The Center of the Arts Osceola County, FL - The Osceola Center for the Arts in Kissimmee has added several new arts classes to their schedule for 2012 that begin next week. Group Guitar and Cartoon Drawing are now available, along with classes in Pottery, Stained Glass, Drawing, Voice Lessons and Bob Ross Painting Workshops. Classes meet once a week for 8-weeks and are available for both children and adults for $100-$120 per 8 week session.

Sheriff & Police - Noticias / News Policía de Kissimmee arresta a tres por robo Kissimmee, FL - La Policía de Kissimmee arresto a tres individuos por robo. A las 2:00 a.m. aproximadamente, los oficiales llegaron a Walgreens en 1111 West Vine Street en Kissimmee en referencia a un robo. Los oficiales se reunieron con la víctima, un hombre de 34 años quien dijo que mientras estaba fumando un cigarro afuera de Walgreens se le acercaron dos mujeres y un hombre. Una de las sospechosas, identificada como Shaye Brown de Kissimmee, 23 años, empezo a empujar a la víctima. Kissimmee Police arrest three for robbery Kissimmee, FL – Kissimmee police arrested three individuals for robbery. At approximately 2:00 a.m., officers responded to the Walgreens at 1111 West Vine Street in Kissimmee in reference to a robbery. Officers met with the 34-year-old male victim who stated while smoking a cigarette outside the Walgreens he was approached by 2 female suspects and one male suspect. One of the female suspects, identified as 23-year-old Shaye Brown of Kissimmee, began pushing the victim. The male suspect, identified as 18-yearold Kajuan Centeno of Kissimmee, punched the victim knocking him to the ground. While the victim was on the ground Brown, Centeno and 24-year-old Lashaka Jenkins of Kissimmee, went through his pockets stealing his cell phone and wallet. The suspects fled the area. Officers were able to locate the suspects at the Lambert Inn located at 410 West Vine Street. The victim was transported to the Lambert Inn and positively identified Brown, Centeno and Jenkins as the individuals who robbed him. During the search incident to arrest, the victim’s cell phone and wallet were found in a red bag that was in Brown’s possession. The victims property was returned at the scene and Brown, Centeno and Jenkins were transported to the Osceola County Jail charged with Robbery.

Traffic stop leads to suspect arrested for drug trafficking Osceola County, FL - At approximately 1:59 a.m., Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of Osceola Parkway and Buenaventura Lakes Boulevard after receiving a call regarding a possible vehicle driving reckless. Deputies located the vehicle, a blue BMW, and the driver in the parking lot of the Walgreens located at 2050 E. Osceola Parkway Boulevard in Kissimmee. Deputies

approached the vehicle and spoke with the driver, identified as Ivan Matos. As deputies were speaking with Matos, they could smell what appeared to be marijuana. Matos cooperated with deputies and allowed a search of the vehicle. Deputies recovered a large sum of cash, prescription pills, approximately 9.5 grams of marijuana and more than 300 plastic bags, commonly used to package narcotics.
Based on the evidence, Matos was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (Xanax) with Intent to Sell, 2 counts of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Cannabis with Intent to Sell and Possession of a Controlled Substance (Diazepam) with Intent to Sell. St. Cloud’s Christmas tree swapping event set for January 14, 2012 St. Cloud, FL – The St. Cloud Parks and Recreation’s Tree Advisory Committee (TAC) is coordinating the 8th Annual “Don’t Curb It… S.W.A.P. It!” event. S.W.A.P. stands for St. Cloud Winning Arbor Patrol. The event is scheduled for Saturday, January 14, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Peghorn Nature Park and Trail (new location) at 2101 Peghorn Way. This program is part of the City’s efforts to increase recycling awareness and enhance the urban forest. The program also helps in avoiding neighborhood curbsides
from being cluttered with trees after the holiday season ends. Residents are invited to bring their live Christmas trees to the park and swap them. The Christmas trees will be recycled and mulched on site. Residents can then select a containerized tree for their yards and receive recycled Christmas tree mulch to spread around the base of the newly planted tree. More than 300 containerized trees will be available (one tree per family), including elms, red maples, magnolias, crape myrtles, and palms. The program is sponsored by TAC and the Florida Yards and
Neighborhoods Program. Parks and Recreation Department volunteers and the Osceola County Master Gardeners will be assisting. Orlando, FL The countdown for Orlando ultimately becoming ``the capital of the basketball world,’’ as Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins referred to it, began on Wednesday with the unveiling of the official AllStar ballot.
Hosting an event the magnitude of the NBA All-Star Game – it will be broadcast in more than 200 countries and in 40 languages worldwide – is why Orlando pushed for the construction of the stateof-the art Amway Center, which opened Oct. 10, 2010. Martins said the All-Star festivities will have a $100 million economic impact in Orlando. The 100,000 guests are expected to fill up 30,000 hotel room nights and breathe life into downtown Orlando and surrounding areas of Central Florida.
Four Magic players – Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson – are on the ballot, highlighted of course by Howard, Orlando’s fourtime all-star. Howard set an all-time NBA record in 2009 with more than 3.1 million votes and he was again the East’s leading vote-getter last year with nearly 2.1 million votes from fans. The 61st NBA annual AllStar Game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 26 in Orlando at the dazzling Amway Center. The Rising Stars Challenge and Youth Jam will be held on Feb. 24, while the AllStar Saturday Night present by State Farm will be held on Feb. 25. In addition, the NBA All-Star Jam presented by Adidas will be held at the

He has become an international phenomenon through the past few years, earning 7.6 million votes over the past three seasons. He said his anticipation over Orlando hosting the All-Star Game has been building for years. Tickets to the NBA All-Star Saturday Night and the AllStar Game will be scarce for fans locally. The Magic were allocated 3,000 tickets to the Saturday and Sunday events and will get 5,000 tickets to the Friday night RookieSophomore Game.
The Magic will conduct a drawing later this month for season-ticket holders to earn the right to buy tickets to the events. Martins added that while the eyes of the basketball world will be on Orlando during the All-Star weekend, hosting the NBA will allow Orlando to showcase itself as a potential home to other major sporting events. With the state-of-theart Amway Center now at its disposal, Orlando can now compete with other cities to host college basketball, gymnastics and figure skating events along with political conventions. Martins said this is Orlando’s chance to showcase its arena and its ability to host major events.

Great Florida Shootout 2011 Equipo de la Florida Central domina torneo Por Robert Dent Kissimmee, FL - Del 27 al 29 de diciembre varios equipos de baloncesto de las escuelas superiores compitieron en el Centro Civico de Kissimmee en el 31st Annual Great Florida ShootOut. Los Highlanders de la Escuela Superior Lake Wales dominaron el torneo y le ganaron con puntuación de 69 a 52 a la Escuela Superior Peachtree Ridge de Suwannee, Georgia. Felicitamos a todos los jugadores, entrenadores y escuelas participantes. Los equipos, incluyendo tres escuelas superiores locales, tuvieron la oportunidad de ser vistos por reclutadores universitarios y demostrar sus destrezas frente a algunos de los mejores equipos del sureste. Pero este torneo no es sólo para coronar un nuevo campeón y traer dinero a nuestra economía. Central Florida High school dominated the tournament By Robert Dent Kissimmee, FL - From December 27-29 high school basketball teams competed at the Kissimmee Civic Center in the 31st Annual Great Florida ShootOut. Lake Wales High School’s Highlanders dominated the tournament and finished with a 69-52 victory over Peachtree Ridge High School from Suwannee, Georgia. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and schools who participated. The teams, including three local high schools, had the opportunity to be seen by college recruiters and test their skills against some of the best teams in the southeast. This tournament wasn’t just about crowning a new champion and bringing dollars to our economy. More than 40 Rotarians, their family members and volunteers put on the family focused event, from concessions, statistics, team liaisons, scheduling and the hundreds of other details required to put on a successful tournament. Boy Scout Troop 826 is also acknowledged for providing irreplaceable help.

Anderson continues to improve By Kevin Waldbieser Orlando, FL - As the Magic continued their hot start to the season with a win against the Wizards on Wednesday night, one player continues to surprise the NBA world with his improvements over the offseason. Ryan Anderson has come out on fire this season, averaging nearly 20 points a game through Orlando’s first 7 games. He is the teams’ leading scorer, and leads the entire league in three-pointers made. He is averaging over 3 triples per game and is shooting them at over 40 percent. The trade that sent Brandon Bass to Boston in the offseason secured Anderson’s spot in the starting lineup, regardless of the fact that the trade brought in Glen Davis. Anderson has proven to be up to the job with not just his scoring, but his hustle and rebounds. Wednesday night he had a season high 15 rebounds and is averaging 7 per game so far this season. He is doing a great job on the offensive glass, helping Orlando get
second chance points. This is the first year that Anderson has gotten a chance to play over 30 minutes a game, and he is making the most of it. The NBA released the ballots for the All-Star game on Wednesday, and surprisingly Anderson was not one of the 4 Magic players up for the vote. He has clearly been the second best player for Orlando all season. The journalists and broadcasters that come up with the ballots have truly shown their ignorance in leaving him out. Fans can use their write-in vote on Anderson, but he will most likely have to be a coaches pick in order to get to play in the All-Star game in front of his Orlando fans this year. If he continues to lead the league in three-pointers however, it is very likely that he could get invited to compete in the three-point competition on All Star Saturday night. Anderson and Orlando will face their toughest competition since Oklahoma City on opening night this Friday, when the Chicago Bulls come to town.

The investigation began on December 29 at approximately 1:00 p.m. when deputies responded to the area of Target Boulevard and U.S. 192 in Kissimmee in reference to an armed disturbance. Upon arrival, deputies observed a male, later identified as Bretherick, behind a red Chevrolet Silverado pointing a handgun towards a blue Escalade. Deputies spoke with Bretherick who indicated he was with his family, his father was driving westbound on 192, when the driver of the Blue Escalade passed them at a high rate of speed and almost hit their vehicle. His father honked his horn and drove past the Escalade, but
