HCCMO announcment of leadership succession of 2012/13 officers and board of directors Orlando, FL - As the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando (HCCMO) welcomed a new Chair and Board of Directors, the organization also announced its leadership succession plan, and that after nearly a decade of service, Chamber President Ramon A. Ojeda will step down in 2013 to explore business opportunities outside the organization.

The news was shared at the Chamber’s 20th Annual Installation of the Chair and Board of Directors in a business luncheon celebrated in downtown Orlando at the beautiful and historic Ballroom at Church Street with more than 480 business and community leaders and elected officials, including Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs.

Condado Osceola, FL – Comisionados del Condado de Osceola, junto a personal del condado, presentarán una ceremonia de comienzo de proyecto el jueves, 16 de febrero a las 10:00 a.m. para marcar el comienzo del “Centro de Bienvenida y Museo de Historia”.

El Centro de Bienvenida y Museo de Historia: “Donde la Naturaleza y la Historia se Encuentran” es uno de los nuevos proyectos de construcción en desarrollo a lo largo del corredor U.S. 192. El Centro será una combinación única de un centro de bienvenida para visitantes, un centro de naturaleza y un museo de historia el cual envuelve las muchas oportunidades de aventuras al aire libre con el abundante ecoturismo del Condado en una manera informativa, amena y agradable.

La localización del Centro, ubicado en el antiguo restaurante Roadhouse Grill cerca de la carretera Yates y la Autopista 192, junto a las orillas del histórico canal de Shingle Creek, fue resultado de la consolidación de tres centros de naturaleza pequeños (“state grant related”) siendo combinados en un sólo centro más amplio y visible.

El nuevo centro combina no sólo la naturaleza, sino la historia cultural primitiva con las oportunidades disponibles de eco-turismo tales como paseos en canoa, ciclismo, acampar, montar a caballo, la pesca, lugares históricos, fotografía al aire libre y observar las aves. El edificio será administrado por la Sociedad Histórica del Condado de Osceola bajo un contrato con el Condado.

Osceola County Breaks Ground on New Welcome Center and History Museum Osceola County, FL – Osceola County Commissioners, along with county staff, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, February 16th to mark the commencement of the “Welcome Center and History Museum” at 4155 West Vine Street.

The Osceola County Welcome Center & History Museum: “Where Nature and History Meet” is one of the newest construction projects being developed on the U.S. 192 corridor. The Center will be a unique combination of a visitor welcome center, a nature center and a history museum that bundles the County’s abundant eco-tourism and outdoor adventure opportunities in an informative, entertaining and engaging way.

The Centers location, at the old Roadhouse Grill near Yates Road and U.S. 192, right along the eastern banks of historic Shingle Creek, was a result of a consolidation of three smaller, state grant related nature centers being

combined into a more visible and larger single center.

The new center combines not only nature, but early cultural history with available eco-tourism opportunities such as canoeing, biking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, historical sites, outdoor photography and bird watching. The site will be operated by the Osceola County Historical Society under an agreement with the County.

“The opening of the Welcome Center and History Museum is the first step in establishing Osceola County in the adventure/eco-tourism market that we hope to develop. In addition, the historical part of the Welcome Center will allow Osceola to celebrate both its history and progress in the County,” said Osceola County Commissioner Michael Harford.

Local - Noticias / News Comisionado Arrington electo Presidente de MetroPlan para el 2012 Condado Osceola, FL – El Comisionado del Condado Osceola Brandon Arrington fue elegido Presidente de MetroPlan Orlando en la reunión del 8 febrero. Su término comienza inmediatamente y se extenderá hasta el final del año.

Su elección hace del Comisionado Arrington, a sus 37 años de edad, la persona más joven en servir como Presidente de MetroPlan Orlando en la historia reciente y también le hace parte de la única familia bigeneracional sirviendo en una capacidad de liderazgo en la junta.

Su madre, Mary Jane Arrington, sirvió como Presidente de MetroPlan en 1998 y 1999, también mientras se desempeñaba como Comisionado del Condado Osceola para el Distrito 2.

Osceola County, FL - Osceola County Commissioner Brandon Arrington was elected Chairman of MetroPlan Orlando at its February 8th meeting. His term begins immediately and will run through the end of the calendar year.

His election makes Commissioner Arrington, at 37 years old, the youngest person to serve as MetroPlan Orlando Chairman in recent history, and also makes him part of the only bi-generational family to serve in a leadership capacity on the board. His mother, Mary Jane Arrington, served as MetroPlan Chairman in 1998 and 1999, also while serving as Osceola County Commissioner for District 2.

“It is a great honor to represent the region in this capacity,” said Commissioner Arrington, “and I look forward to not only improving our transportation network in Osceola, but throughout Central Florida.”

MetroPlan Orlando is the metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties – the Orlando Urban Area. The MetroPlan Orlando Board is ultimately responsible for implementing the transportation planning process in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. The board is comprised of elected officials from the three-county area, the largest cities in the region, and representatives from the region’s transportation operating agencies.

Commissioner Arrington was also recently appointed Vice-Chairman of the 2012 Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission and is the 2012 Vice-Chairman of the Lynx Board of Directors.

St. Cloud - Noticias / News Dos policías de St. Cloud honrados por alcaldesa y jefe de la policía St. Cloud, FL – Dos miembros del Departamento de la Policía de St. Cloud fueron reconocidos y encomendados el 9 de febrero durante la reunión regular del Concilio de St. Cloud en City Hall. St. Cloud police officers honored by mayor and police chief St. Cloud, FL – Two St. Cloud Police Department officers were recognized and commended February 9 during a St. Cloud City Council Regular Meeting at City Hall for their heroic actions during a shooting incident in late November 2011. City of St. Cloud Police Officer Clinton Wise and Police Officer Spencer Endsley were each presented with a proclamation from St. Cloud Mayor Rebecca Borders and a Purple Heart Award from St. Cloud Chief of Police Pete Gauntlett.

“These two police officers bravely risked their own personal safety while responding to a potentially deadly shooting incident in a valiant effort to

ensure the safety of the citizens of St. Cloud,” said Gauntlett. “I commend them for their heroic efforts and courageous performance to safeguard the public. If not for these two police officers, the outcome would have been much more tragic. We are very thankful to have them back.”

Wise, a three-year veteran, and Endsley, a newly hired police officer in training, responded to the 600 block of Alabama Avenue November 21, 2011, at 1:50 a.m., after multiple 911 calls reported a male with a gun shooting multiple rounds. Upon the officers’ arrival, the gunman immediately opened fire on both officers with an

AK-47 assault rifle. Wise was shot in the foot and Endsley sustained injuries from broken glass caused by bullets hitting the windshield of their patrol car.

“As a result of the swift reaction and tactical focus of these officers, they survived this senseless act of violence,” said Borders. “Both Officer Wise and Officer Endsley, with great valor, engaged this violent suspect who was determined to ‘shoot it out’ with police. Their courageous actions averted a potential loss of life and injury to innocent citizens and officers. They represent the finest qualities of dedication, service, and courage. We are proud that these officers are part

of our family and we are especially grateful that they emerged from this dangerous situation alive.”

After several surgeries, Wise’s recuperation has taken several months, but he is expected to return to work (light duty) in mid-February.

Endsley’s recuperation included several procedures to remove glass fragments from his arms, face, and eyes, but he returned to work in late December 2011. The gunman is charged with four counts of attempted felony murder, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and numerous other criminal charges related to the November 21, 2011 events.

Atracciones / Attractions Wet’n Wild Orlando anuncia nueva atracción para el verano 2012 Orlando, FL - La empresa Universal Parks and Resorts anunció recientemente, como parte de su nueva transmisión Web de nuevos productos para 2012, que se construirá una nueva atracción en el parque Wet ‘n Wild Orlando. El nuevo Parque de los Niños (Kids’ Park, en inglés) se anticipa que sea el más grande de su categoría en la Florida, cubriendo un acre y conteniendo parque acuático cuya temática será un castillo de arena. Covering an acre and featuring a new sandcastlethemed water playground, the new Kids’ Park is expected to be the largest of its kind in Florida. Scheduled to open summer of 2012, this will be Wet ‘n Wild’s first new attraction in over four years.

“We are excited to offer a tremendous, new experience for families and children of all ages”, said Michael Black, Sr. Vice President & GM of Wet ‘n Wild “As the waterpark recognized for shared thrills and multi-person attractions, we wanted to add new thrills for the kids to share with their families.”

The new interactive water playground will span more than 60-feet in height, expand across two pools (two levels: upper & lower) and have more than 85,000 gallons of water for guests to

enjoy. The sandcastle playground itself will encompass more than 15,000 square feet, and will feature 17 slides and over 100 soakers, jets, waterfalls and water cannons.

St. Cloud Police - Noticias / News Arrestan sospechoso de homicidio St. Cloud, FL - El pasado 23 de junio de 2011, aproximadamente a las 2016 horas, miembros del Departamento de la Policía de St. Cloud respondieron a una llamada proveniente del 819 Carolina Avenue en St. Cloud, FL sobre la investigación de una muerte sospechosa. Educación / Education Take Stock in Children dará becas universitarias a 22 niños Orlando, FL - El jueves, 9 de febrero la organización Tomando en Cuenta a los Niños (Take Stock in Children) del Condado Orange anunció que 22 estudiantes de séptimo grado de este condado han sido ingresados en el programa, el cual ofrece mentores y becas universitarias a niños en desventaja.

En una ceremonia celebrada en el Valencia College el pasado 9 de febrero, más de 450 líderes comunitarios, voluntarios, patrocinadores empresariales y mentores se reunieron para darles la bienvenida a los estudiantes nuevos y retornantes y a sus familias.

El número total de estudiantes del Condado Orange que participan en el programa es de 130.

Osceola County, FL - A student representing Westside K-8 in Osceola County recently won the highest honor in this year’s WordMasters Challenge, a national language arts competition entered by approximately 220,000 students annually. Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the Challenge, fifth grader Billy Fortin earned a perfect score in the year’s first of three meets held in December. In the entire country, only 130 fifth graders earned perfect scores. Other fifth grade students at the school who also achieved outstanding results in the meet included Lianna Cote, Jarelys Torres, Max Boyers, Geraldine Dominicci, Angel Gozalez, Ashley Roman, and Katie Amato. The school’s students were coached in preparation for the Challenge by teachers Theresa Bobola and Daniel Torres.

What Every Car Accident Victim Should Know Before Bringing a Personal Injury Case!

Drivers, including passengers, need to know certain things about automobile insurance policies.

First, Florida requires all drivers to carry what is commonly called PIP or no-fault insurance. PIP refers to “Personal Injury Protection” coverage under a drivers’ automobile insurance policy. PIP benefits are supposed to cover 80% of medical expenses or 60% of lost wages related to a car accident up to $10,000 regardless of fault. Second, a drivers’ automobile insurance policy is also supposed to cover claims for “Bodily Injury” generally known as “BI”. BI coverage protects drivers from claims in the event that they cause injuries to someone else in a car accident.

PIP and BI are two separate and distinct types of insurance geared to protect drivers under two different and distinct circumstances. For example, if you and a passenger are involved in a car accident – your PIP coverage pays for 80% of your medical bills or 60% of your lost wages up to $10,000. Your PIP may not necessarily cover the passenger’s medical bills. To simplify, payment of the passenger’s medical bills may be determined by whether the passenger resides in a household with attachable PIP insurance. However, assuming the driver is not at-fault, the at-fault driver’s BI coverage is used as a monetary reservoir to either settle your case or to satisfy an award after verdict.

Here is what is important for the driver to remember - even though PIP and BI are two distinct types of insurance protection, in the long run PIP maximization may diminish a claimant’s BI settlement or award.

Many drivers and/or victims of car accidents are not aware of this fact or are made aware after it is too

late to do anything about it.

Here is how it works. In car accident cases, after PIP benefits reach the $10,000 threshold maximum insurance companies usually stop all payments because PIP benefits are exhausted. This means the PIP insurer no longer pays your medical provider for the services they provide to you – be it therapy, MRI’s, x-rays, etc. The PIP insurer is no longer obligated by law to pay for these services and they don’t.

This, however, does not stop the medical provider from pursuing payment for unpaid services rendered.

Often, medical providers pursue these unpaid claims through “Letter of Protection” – generally referred to as “LOP.” An LOP is a document which is usually contained in the group of documents handed to you for signature at a medical provider’s office which allows them to pursue unpaid medical bills either against any award or settlement you receive under the at-fault driver’s BI coverage, or - worst case scenario – against you individually in the event no settlement or award is obtained by your lawyer.

This interplay between PIP benefits exhausted, LOP and BI sometimes yields unfortunate and unintended results for victims of car accidents. There have been stories of unknowing victims of car accidents who have netted, after LOP and contingency fees, significantly less than the medical provider and lawyer. In representing car accident victims, this is a result that your lawyer should avoid at all cost albeit sometimes not. There are ways to avoid this but it involves planning and straight talk – letting the chips fall as they may.

Drivers and passengers also need to know that because that there may be unscrupulous “medical” providers whose sole intention is to line their pockets with PIP and LOP benefits assigned to them by unwary car accident victims. There have been stories of medical providers going as far as offering car accident victims cash to attend their facility. Note: Soliciting accident victims in this manner is contrary to the law and may expose you to severe penalties.

Be wary of the following: If you had a minor automobile accident involving your child as a passenger and your “PIP Provider” is burning through you and your child’s PIP benefits faster than you can say “Sponge Bob Square Pants” - then you may have a problem.

If, while driving late at night on a deserted highway in the middle of nowhere, you have an accident and someone magically appears at the scene, hands you his business card, and promises you a pot of gold if you just go to his medical clinic - then you may have problem.

If at the end of your “medical treatment” you feel no better than when you started (or perhaps worse), your provider burned through your PIP benefits at the speed of light, you owe your PIP Provider money as a deficiency for the “medical treatment” you received and your provider is threatening to collect, and you end-up with a minimal settlement (a few thousand dollars) in your personal injury case – then you may have been exploited.

By Kevin Waldbieser Orlando, FL - The NBA announced on Wednesday that Ryan Anderson is going to take part in the three-point competition on All Star Weekend.

Anderson leads the NBA in both three-pointers attempted and made.

He will join defending champion James Jones along with Mario Chalmers, Kevin Love, Joe Johnson and Anthony Morrow.

Wednesday night the Orlando Magic took on the 76ers in Orlando, and Anderson made it very clear that he belongs in the competition. He hit 7 three-pointers in the game, his second time doing so this season.

Anderson is a 6-10 power forward, so he may not be quite as quick as some of the smaller players in the competition. The shootout is often won by guards, who have the

advantage of being able to quickly move from rack to rack in the competition. It will be interesting to see how both Anderson and Kevin Love move around the three-point line on All-Star Saturday night. Ryan does have the advantage of shooting on a court he’s very familiar with at the Amway Center.

Anderson is the only Magic player other than Dwight Howard who

was invited to participate in All-Star weekend. Howard received more votes than any other player to get into the All-Star game.

Orlando has won 3 games in a row, and still has 5 more before the festivities begin. They will play in Orlando Friday night before heading out on a 4 game road trip to lead into the All-Star break.
