Osceola County - Noticias / News Nuevo acceso para canoas en Shingle Creek Condado Osceola, FL Fue inaugurada otra conexión al lago Tohopekaliga y a sus oportunidades de recreación de clase mundial.

El área de conservación de Scotty’s Cove es una parada oficial de canoa/kayak en el Camino de Shingle Creek. El lugar donde antes hubo un puerto de 80 espacios y restaurante es ahora el punto de partida para la aventura y diversión acuática.

“Esta es otra fabulosa localidad para todos aquellos que aman la naturaleza y nuestro gran sistema de lagos” dijo el Comisionado Frank Attkisson, cuyo distrito incluye la propiedad. “Estoy seguro de que todos los entusiastas de canoas y kayaks están muy ansiosos por usar esta nuevo lugar. Una vez más el Condado Osceola está mejorando la calidad de vida para nuestros ciudadanos, preservando un área escénica que es hogar de una diversa lista de plantas y vida silvestre”.

El sitio acoge icónica flora y fauna como un roble mesic, un ciprés y humedales de agua dulce que sirven de hogar para el águila pescadora, carrao, grullas, garza azul, pato aguja, pájaro cantor y tortugas del vientre rojo, informaron las autoridades.

El Área de Conservación Scotty Cove fue adquirida en enero del 2002 a través de una subvención de colaboración de 500,000 dólares del Florida Communities Trust. La antigua marina y restaurante fueron destruidos por los huracanes del 2004 que pasaron por la zona.

El Comisionado Frank Attkisson, dentro de cuyo distrito se encuentra Scotty’s Cove, estuvo a cargo del corte de cinta del evento.

New access on Shingle Creek paddling trail Osceola County, FL Another connection to Lake Tohopekaliga and its world class recreational opportunities opened.

The Scotty’s Cove Conservation area is an official canoe/kayak stop on the Shingle Creek Paddling Trail. The site of a former 80-slip marina and restaurant is now the launching point for water-borne fun and adventure.

“This is another fabulous facility for anyone who loves nature and our great system of lakes,” said Commissioner Frank Attkisson, whose district includes the property. “I’m sure that all the canoe and kayaking enthusiasts out there are excited about launching from this new location. Once again the Osceola County is enhancing the quality of life for our citizens, while preserving a scenic area that is home to a diverse list of wildlife and plants.”

The site hosts iconic flora and fauna such as a mesic oak flatwoods, a bald cypress stand and fresh water marsh wetlands that are home for osprey, limpkin, sandhill cranes, great blue heron, anhinga, songbirds and red belly turtles, officials said.

Scotty’s Cove Conservation Area was purchased in January 2002 through a partnership grant of $500,000 from the Florida Communities Trust. The former marina and restaurant was destroyed by the 2004 hurricanes that swept through the area.

Along with an area to launch kayaks and canoes, facilities include a children’s play area, two picnic pavilions, an open-air classroom, a walking/exercise trail and benches to enjoy the scenery.

The Shingle Creek Paddling Trail will eventually encompass approximately 10 miles. The trail includes 1 mile north of U.S. Highway 192 and 9 miles of trail south eventually linking Shingle Creek with Makinson Island, Twin Oaks, Cherokee Point and Scotty’s Cove Conservation areas on Lake Toho. Canoe and Kayak rentals will be available at U.S. 192 and Marsh Landing and Cherokee Point Conservation Area in the future.

Shingle Creek marks the beginning of the Everglades system and the county’s Regional Park with more than 1,000 acres spread out along multiple sites along its banks.

The creek feeds into Lake Toho, the first of several lakes that are connected by either canals or natural passageways to the “River of Grass.”

Scotty’s Cove Conservation Area is located at 1570 Parsons Road, Kissimmee. The facility is open from sunrise to sunset.

Overnight stays are prohibited.

San Juan, PR - Popular, Inc. anunció que a fin de agudizar su enfoque en mercados clave para su franquicia de E.E.U.U., impulsar la eficiencia y mejorar la rentabilidad, su afiliada Popular Community Bank (PCB) se someterá a una reorganización estratégica en la que se desprenderá de su operaciones regionales en California, Illinois y Florida Central y centralizará ciertas operaciones de administración en Puerto Rico y Nueva York.

Popular entró en un acuerdo definitivo para vender sus operaciones regionales, incluyendo 41 sucursales, aproximadamente $1.8 billones en carteras de préstamos relacionados, y aproximadamente $2.1 billones en depósitos, a tres compradores diferentes. Las transacciones se traducirán en primas netas de aproximadamente $25 millones y se estima que el subsidio de amortización de fondo de comercio será de aproximadamente $160 millones.

Las transacciones, que están sujetas a aprobaciones reglamentarias y otras condiciones de cierre, se espera que se efectúen antes del final del año.

Popular, Inc. sells Central Florida Popular Community Bank branches San Juan, PR - Popular, Inc. announced that in order to sharpen its focus on key markets for its U.S. franchise, drive efficiencies and improve profitability, its subsidiary Popular Community Bank (PCB) will undergo a strategic reorganization in which it will divest its regional operations in California, Illinois and Central Florida and centralize certain back office operations in Puerto Rico and New York.

Popular entered into definitive agreements to sell its regional operations, including 41 branches, approximately $1.8 billion in related loan portfolios, and approximately $2.1 billion in deposits, to three different buyers. The transactions will result in net premium of approximately $25 million and an estimated noncash Goodwill writedown of approximately $160 million.

The transactions, which are subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions, are expected to

close before the end of the year.

KUA - Noticias / News Llega ola de calor; hora de cambiar la dirección de su ventilador Algunos ventiladores de techo modernos tienen controles remotos que incluyen un botón para invertir la rotación de las aspas.

Kissimmee, FL - Con una ola de calor llegando a la Florida Central esta semana, es el momento de cambiar la dirección de su ventilador de techo para recibir el máximo rendimiento y ahorro energético.

En el invierno, un ventilador de techo debe operar a baja velocidad en la dirección de las agujas del reloj. Esto produce una corriente ascendente suave, que fuerza hacia abajo el aire caliente cerca del techo hasta el espacio ocupado. Heat wave arrives; time to switch your fan direction Kissimmee, FL - With a heat wave bearing down on Central Florida this week, now is the time to switch the direction of your ceiling fan to receive maximum performance and energy savings.

In the winter, a ceiling fan should operate at a low speed in the clockwise direction. This produces a gentle updraft, which forces warm air near the ceiling down into the occupied space.

Once the summer heat has arrived, however, the ceiling fan should be switched into the counterclockwise direction. While standing directly under the ceiling fan you should feel a cool breeze. The airflow produced creates a wind-chill effect, making you “feel” cooler.

How to reverse a ceiling fan: 1. Look at the current rotational direction of the blades and determine if you need to change the blades’ direction.

2.Turn off the ceiling fan.

3.Wait for the ceiling fan blades to completely stop rotating.

4.

Find the switch that reverses the direction of the blades’ rotation.

Conventional ceiling fans have a switch on the housing assembly near the pull string or cord (see attached photo illustration). Some modern ceiling fans have remote controls that include a button for reversing blade rotation.

Push or flip the switch to the opposite position, reversing the direction. Turn the ceiling fan back on and proceed with using it in your home to circulate air.

Ideally, ceiling fans should be used alone or in conjunction with your air conditioner. If you use them both, you can set your thermostat two to four degrees warmer without sacrificing any comfort, and for each degree you raise the thermostat, you’ll save about eight percent on your electric bill.

Remember: Ceiling fans cool people, not rooms. If the room is unoccupied, turn off the ceiling fan to save energy.

Transportación / Transportation Día histórico para el SunRail Por Eliizabeth Sabillon Orlando, FL - Durante más de dos décadas, nuestra región ha ansiado tener un sistema de trenes para pasajeros que transporte a los residentes y visitantes con facilidad a través de la Florida Central. Ese sueño se hizo realidad el miércoles, 30 de abril, cuando se celebró la gran apertura de la primera fase del SunRail, que recorrerá 31 millas y contará con 12 estaciones, la cual fue realizada en la estación de Sand Lake Road en Orlando.

Funcionarios del condado y del gobierno, como la Alcalde de Condado Orange, Teresa Jacobs, el Secretario de Estado Adjunto Richard Biter, el Vice Presidente del Condado Seminole Carlton Henley y el Alcalde de Orlando Buddy Dyer hablaron en el evento. La Dra. Yvette Taylor, administradora de Tránsito Federal, dijo “El SunRail se convertirá en realidad para aquellas personas desesperadas, que buscan ahorrar tiempo y dinero eliminar la frustración de su viaje diario al trabajo.”

By Eliizabeth Sabillon Orlando, FL - For more than two decades, our region has hoped for a passenger rail system that would move residents and visitors easily throughout Central Florida.

That dream was realized on Wednesday, April 30, when they celebrated the grand opening of SunRail’s 31-mile, 12-station first phase at the Sand Lake Road station.

County and Government officials such as Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, State Assistant Secretary Richard Biter, Seminole County Vice Chairman Carlton Henley, and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, and Dr. Yvette Taylor spoke at the event. Dr. Taylor who is a Federal Transit Administrator said “SunRail will become real for those people desperate, looking to save time and

money and take the frustration out of their daily commute”.

The SunRail train station will cover three counties: Volusia, Seminole and Orange County and will include stations in DeBary, Sanford, Lake Mary, Longwood, Altamonte Springs, Maitland, Winter Park, Florida Hospital Health Village, LYNX Central Station, Church Street, Orlando Health/Amtrak, and Sand Lake Road. SunRail trains are Central Florida’s new commuter rail line, and were built with comfort and convenience in mind. The double-decker passenger cars have spacious seating and include features such as ADA accessibility, power outlets, work tables, Wi-Fi, and much more.

Secretary Richard Biter started off by saying, “We are starting to realize the

Two new trustees join Valencia College Governing Board Orlando, FL - Two new trustees will join Valencia’s College’s District Board of Trustees, following their confirmation by the Florida Senate this week. Raymer Maguire III of Orlando and John Crossman of Orlando will now serve on Valencia’s governing board.

Maguire and Crossman were nominated by Gov. Rick Scott in February, but their appointments were subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate. The Senate also confirmed the reappointment of Maria Grulich of Celebration.

Maguire, an eminent domain attorney with Maguire Lassman P.A., currently serves on the boards of the Central Care Mission and the Youth Ministry Institute. He graduated from the University of Florida with honors and earned his law degree from Florida State University College of Law. He succeeds trustee Lori Kifer Johnson.

Maguire previously served on the board from 2006 to 2011. His father, Raymer Maguire Jr., helped found Valencia Community College and served on the board of trustees for 17 years.

Crossman is president of Crossman & Company, one of the largest real-estate firms in the Southeast. Crossman earned a bachelor’s degree in real estate from Florida State University and has been an Orlando resident for the past 23 years. St Cloud - Noticias / News Ganadores del concurso Mes de Conservación del Agua en St. Cloud St. Cloud, FL - La alcaldesa de St. Cloud, Rebecca Borders, proclamó al mes de abril como el Mes de Conservación de Agua el 24 de abril durante una reunión regular de concilio en la alcaldía. La intención de la proclamación es ayudar a aumentar conciencia sobre la importancia de la conservación del agua. Durante la reunión, los ganadores del Drop Savers Water Conservation Poster Contest del 2014 (un concurso de conservación de agua) fueron reconocidos. Water Conservation Month proclaimed in St. Cloud, contest winners announced St. Cloud, FL - St. Cloud Mayor Rebecca Borders proclaimed April as Water Conservation Month April 24 during a regular council meeting at City Hall. The proclamation is intended to help increase awareness about the importance of water conservation. City of St. Cloud’s curbside single-stream recycling program entering its third year St. Cloud, FL - The City of St. Cloud Public Services’ curbside single-stream recycling program is now entering its third year.

“Participation has been great since we incorporated this program in October 2011,” said Public Services Administrator Veronica Miller. “Our customers have been very good at paying attention to the recyclables list, but we can always improve on

that. The quality of our recyclable stream heavily depends on all of our customers. The benefits of recycling are truly seen when the materials are rinsed and sorted correctly at home, school, and office.‘ Instead of separating recyclables into two “streams” of mixed paper and commingled containers, customers may conveniently place materials together in one bin. Plastic bottles are

recyclable; however, customers are asked to dispose of all plastic bags, Styrofoam/plastic foam, and shredded paper in the garbage. Customers are also asked to remove newspapers from their plastic sleeves before placing the newspapers in the blue carts. All recyclable material should have the lids removed, be rinsed, and placed loosely in the blue recycling carts – not in bags, particularly plastic grocery bags, plastic garbage bags,

and plastic sleeve bags. Placing recyclable items in bags impedes sorting at the recycling center.

In an effort to build awareness of the upcoming Click It or Ticket Campaign, the Traffic Enforcement Unit will be at Wal-Mart and K-Mart this weekend inspecting car seats to ensure they have been installed correctly.

National Take Back Initiative Results in 408 Pounds of Drugs Osceola County, FL - On Saturday, April 26, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and other local law enforcement agencies participated in the 8th National Take Back Initiative and took in 408.5 pounds of drugs during the 4-hour event at four locations.

This one-day effort brought national attention to the issue of pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

After further investigation, detectives discovered the computer was located at Maldonado’s residence in Kissimmee.

On April 29, detectives obtained a search warrant for 118 Lemon Court in Kissimmee and took into evidence his computer.

Maldonado was home and cooperated with the investigation. Based on his statements and the evidence, he was arrested and booked into the Osceola County Jail.

The investigation is on-going with additional charges pending.

Orlando logra una nueva victoria

By Amanda Ludick Orlando, FL El pasado sábado, Orlando City Soccer venció al Oklahoma City Energy FC en su primer partido en casa de la temporada. Orlando pulls off another victory

By Amanda Ludick Orlando, FL - Last Saturday, Orlando City Soccer took on the Oklahoma City Energy FC in their first home game of the season. The teams played in front of a spirited sold out crowd. Orlando played without Rob Valentino, who was out due to injury, and Darwin Ceran, who returned to Orlando for personal reasons. Despite playing without two key players, Orlando was able to pull off another victory.

Twenty four minutes into the first half, Dennis Chin would score first for the Lions. City faced some serious weather challenges the second half.

Strong winds were on their side during the first, but they would play against these winds in the final half. Despite these challenges, Orlando continued to attack and it paid off. Kevin Molino added the final goal for City after he intercepted a sloppy Oklahoma pass.

Oklahoma was able to get on the score board in the final minutes of play. The final score was Orlando City 2 to Oklahoma FC 1. On Tuesday, Kevin Molino was announced as the

USL Pro Player of the Week. Molino has had four goals in as many games.

Orlando returned home to prepare for the I4 Derby on Wednesday night against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The Derby began in 2013 after the two clubs’ supporter groups formed an intense rivalry. Both sides agreed to play.

Orlando City remains undefeated against Tampa. The first goal came off a clean pass from Brian Span to Adama Mbengue. The second goal for Orlando was by Dennis Chin. Chin was able to gain control of the ball after the Goalkeeper for Tampa was forced to send the ball into his path.

Orlando led 2 to 0 at half time and had one more opportunity in the second half. In the final minutes, Brian Span was able to send a solid strike into the back of the net. Tampa had several solid opportunities but were unable to finish. The Lions took home the victory and will play the Rowdies in Tampa on July 6. The next USL Pro match will be played this Sunday against the Oklahoma City FC Energy at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.

Q. Is there some way to prevent getting shingles?

Shingles is a painful skin disease caused by the chickenpox virus awakening from a dormant state to attack your body again. Anyone who has had chicken-pox can get shingles.

Some people report fever and weakness when the disease starts.

Within two to three days, a red, blotchy rash develops. The rash erupts into small blisters that look like chickenpox.

The pain of shingles can be severe.

If it is strong and lasts for months or years, it is called postherpetic neuralgia.

There is a vaccine for shingles called Zostavax. The vaccine is approved for use in people 60 years old and older to prevent shingles.

Zostavax does not treat shingles or post-herpetic neuralgia once it develops.

In a clinical trial involving thousands of adults 60 years old or older, Zostavax prevented shingles in about half of the people and postherpetic neuralgia in 67% of the study participants. While the vaccine was most effective in people 60-69 years old, it also provided some protection for older groups.

So, for starters, avoid close facial contact with people who have colds.

Also, if you can, try to avoid touching your face after you have been around someone with a cold.

Washing your hands thoroughly and often is important. Washing with soap and water doesn’t kill the cold virus, but removes it. The scrubbing is more important than the soap.

Cleaning environmental surfaces with a virus-killing disinfectant might help prevent spread of infection. The worst room in the house for germs is the kitchen. And the greatest concentration is found in sponges and dishcloths.

Laundering a dishcloth doesn’t eliminate germs. And putting a sponge through the dishwasher makes it look clean but doesn’t remove the infection. Instead, moisten the sponge or dishcloth and microwave it for two minutes. Then you’ll have safe, germ-free tools to use.
