Salud / Health Más camas para atención médica en el Osceola Regional Por Eugenia Hernández Kissimmee, FL - El martes, 12 de noviembre, el Osceola Regional Medical Center estrenó su nueva Torre A. Después de años de planificación, la torre con 64 nuevas camas para pacientes esta finalmente completa, para asegurar que cada paciente dentro de esta instalación cuente con una habitación privada. Esta nueva torre para pacientes de 115.000 pies cuadrados, aumenta la cantidad de camas del hospital de 257 a 321. La instalación de tres pisos cuenta con áreas dedicadas a la atención neurológica; ortopedia y columna vertebral; cáncer y cuidados para pacientes críticos. 12 habitaciones están designadas para la Unidad de

Cuidados Intensivos Neurológicos (UCI) de los pacientes, 18 para los pacientes que necesitan un nivel intermedio de atención; 14 para pacientes con cáncer y las otras 20 serán utilizados por el Centro de Ortopedia y Columna Vertebral.. Esta expansión de $60 millones incluye la construcción de la torre y una inversión de más de $7 millones de dólares en tecnología y equipos médicos para equipar la nueva torre. La ceremonia de corte de cinta contó con la presencia de Comisionados del Condado y de la Ciudad, personal del hospital, líderes comunitarios y público en general que recorrió las nuevas instalaciones.

More beds for medical care at Osceola Regional

By Eugenia Hernandez Kissimmee, FL - On Tuesday, Nov. 12th, Osceola Regional Medical Center unveils its new Tower A. After years of planning, the 64-bed patient tower is finally complete to ensure that each patient within this facility has a private room. This new 115,000-square-foot patient tower increases the hospital’s bed count from 257 to 321. The three-floor facility has areas dedicated to neurosciences care, orthopedic and spine, cancer and critical care patients.12 rooms are designated for the Neuro Sciences Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients; 18 for patients needing an intermediate level of care; 14 for cancer patients and the other 20 will be utilized by the Orthopedics & Spine Center. This $60 million expansion includes the construction of the tower and an investment of more than $7 million on technology and medical equipment to outfit the new tower. The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by County and City Commissioners, hospital staff, community leaders and general public who toured the new tower.

Mark Maldonado, Gerente de la Asociación de Poinciana Villages, Inc, estuvo presente para darle la bienvenida a los asistentes y al Director Ejecutivo de la Administración de Asuntos Federales de Puerto Rico, el Licenciado Juan Eugenio Hernández Mayoral, quien estuvo acompañado por la Directora Regional de la Florida Betsy Franceschini. Durante la conferencia se anunció la apertura de una oficina de la PRFAA en el área, donde estarán brindando servicios, una vez al mes, a la comunidad puertorriqueña y al público general residente en Poinciana.

Hernandez Mayoral dijo que la oficina comenzará sus operaciones el 19 de noviembre, fecha en que se conmemora el descubrimiento de Puerto Rico por Cristobal Colón. La oficina estará abierta el tercer martes de cada mes de 9:00 a.m. a 1:00 p.m. y sus servicios estarán disponibles para todo el que requiera asistencia no, solo la población puertorriqueña. La oficina estará localizada en las Oficinas Administrativas de la Asociación de Poinciana Village localizada en el 401 Walnut Street, Poinciana, FL 34759. Betsy Franceschini informó que la meta principal de la oficina será el ayudar al desarrollo económico de los puertorriqueños que llegan para relocalizarse en el area. Poinciana Welcomes PRFAA Poinciana, FL - The Association of Poinciana Villages, Inc. and the Puerto Rico Federal Affair Administration held a press conference on November 14 at the Administrative Office of the Association. Mark Maldonando, Manager of the Poinciana Village Association, was present to welcome the attendees and introduce Juan Eugenio Hernández Mayoral, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affair Administration who was joined by Besty Franceschini, Florida Regional Director. During the conference they announced the opening of a new site of their office, where PRFAA will be offering services, once a month, to the Puerto Rican community of Poinciana. Hernandez said that the office will begin operations in November 19, date that commemorate the discovery of Puerto Rico by Christopher Columbus. The office will open the third Tuesday of every month, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, and the service will be offered

to anyone who requires some assistance, not only to the Puerto Rican population. The office will be located at the Administrative Office of the Association of Poinciana Villages, located at 401 Walnut Street, Poinciana, FL 34759. Franceschini informed that the main goal of the office will be help to the economical development of incoming Puerto Ricans who are moving into the area. Obamacare 106.185 estadounidenses han seleccionado planes de salud en primer período de inscripción abierta Washington, D.C Detallando resultados del primer período de inscripción abierta (02 de octubre al 1 de noviembre-),en el Mercado de Seguros, la Secretaria de Salud y Servicios Humanos (HHS, por sus siglas en inglés), Kathleen Sebelius, anunció que 106.185 personas han elegido planes del mercado y otras 975.407 han hecho el proceso de aplicación y recibieron una determinación de elegibilidad, pero que aún no han seleccionado ningún plan. Adicionalmente, 396.261 personas han sido evaluadas como elegibles para el Programa de Seguro Médico para Niños (CHIP, por sus siglas en inglés) o para Medicaid. 106,185 Americans selected health plans in first reporting period of open enrollment Washington D.C - Detailing results of the first reporting period (Oct. 1-Nov. 2, 2013) of the Health Insurance Marketplace’s Open Enrollment, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that 106,185 individuals have selected plans from the Marketplace, and another 975,407 have made it through the process by applying and receiving an eligibility determination, but have not yet selected a plan. An additional 396,261 have been determined or assessed eligible for Medicaid or the

Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The following key findings are among many newly available data reported in an issue brief from HHS that highlights national and state-level enrollment-related information: 502,466 Americans, in just the first month of implementation, are positioned to have health coverage in 2014; of those, 106,185 Americans have selected plans from the state and federal Marketplaces; and 396,261 Americans have been determined

or assessed eligible for Medicaid or CHIP. 975,407 have made it through the process by applying and receiving an eligibility determination and have not yet selected a plan. The report includes breakouts of enrollment-related data by state, including each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. cases only a partial SBM dataset was available. Enrollment figures include those who have selected a plan and have or have not yet paid the first month’s premium. Of the people who have selected a plan, 79,391 (74.8 percent) enrolled though a SBM, while the other 26,794 people (25.2 percent) enrolled through the FFM. Additionally, for the 396,261 Americans that have been assessed or determined eligible for Medicaid or CHIP, SBMs provided data for the report accounted for 212,865 (53.7 percent) of those determinations, while the FFM accounted for 183,396 (46.3 percent) of them. The report characterizes past experiences in health insurance enrollment patterns, noting typical low initial enrollment in, for example, the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program Medicare Part D, Massachusetts’ Commonwealth Care, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan created under the Affordable Care Act. The report also addresses Marketplace customer service, outreach and web traffic. It found that there have been an estimated 26,876,527 visitors on the SBM and FFM websites. KUA Calendar Winners Announced Kissimmee, FL -Kissimmee Utility Authority announced the winners of its 20th annual student calendar art contest. Open to Osceola County students in kindergarten through fifth grade, the contest is designed to promote energy conservation among students and their families. This year, a total of 1,770 entries were received from 32 Osceola County elementary schools, including public, private and charter schools. A

panel of judges formed by Guillermo Hansen, Cindy Lewis, Sam Lupher, Andrew Sullivan and Arin Thrower met last week and selected 12 entries – one for each calendar month – that will be featured in KUA’s 2014 Calendar of Energy Conservation. This year marked the second consecutive win for Andria Krause. The twelve winning students will have their artwork featured in the 2014 calendar and receive a $100 cash prize. The grand prize

winner will have his name and artwork affixed to a KUA vehicle for one year and will be featured on the calendar’s cover. The grand winner’s school, Holy Redeemer Catholic School, will receive $500 in art supplies, and Flora Ridge Elementary will receive $250 in art supplies for submitting the most total entries in the contest. The calendars will be distributed free of charge, beginning in December.

Educación / Education Valencia College añade tres nuevas carreras para las próximas clases de primavera Esta primavera, Valencia está presentando tres nuevas carreras en tecnología de la información de la salud, tecnología de ingeniería de redes y ciencias cardiopulmonares. El college ofrece ahora un nuevo Asociado en Ciencias en Tecnología de la Información de la Salud. El programa de estudios está diseñado para capacitar a los estudiantes para trabajar en el creciente campo de la historia clínica electrónica y la tecnología de información de salud.

Orlando, FL - Uno de cada cuatro nuevos estudiantes universitarios comienzan sus carreras universitarias en el semestre de primavera, no en el de otoño. Es por eso que Valencia College está animando a aquellos que desean iniciarse en la universidad a inscribirse para las clases del semestre de primavera. Según datos nacionales, el 25 por ciento de los nuevos estudiantes universitarios empiezan las clases en enero y no en agosto. Valencia College adds three new degree programs for upcoming spring classes Orlando, FL - One in four college freshmen start their college careers in the spring semester, not the fall. That’s why Valencia College is encouraging those who want to begin college to enroll now for classes in the spring semester. According to national data, 25 percent of first-time college students now begin classes in January, not in August. That includes veterans and other nontraditional students — who

may look at January as a time to start a new chapter in their lives. But the number also includes a growing number of high-school graduates who decided to take a semester off before starting college. At Valencia College — which has five campuses in Orange and Osceola counties — it’s not too late to sign up for classes that start in January 2014. Osceola County - Noticias / News Empleados del Condado llenan camión con colecta de alimentos para las festividades Condado Osceola, FL - Empleados del Condado Osceola fueron parte de un esfuerzo exitoso esta semana para proveer alimentos a la comunidad durante las festividades. La colecta de alimentos llamada “Compartiendo la Cosecha” ayudó a llenar los estantes de la despensa del “Council on Aging” de Osceola para que todas las familias de Osceola puedan celebrar la festividad de Acción de Gracias. “La razón principal de esta temporada es dar y compartir. Me siento muy orgulloso por el esfuerzo del condado”, dijo el Comisionado del Condado John Quiñones. “Es reconfortante ver cómo nos unimos por causas como estas”.

Los empleados del complejo de Courthouse Square ayudaron a llenar el camión con donaciones de alimentos no perecederos tales como enlatados, mantequilla de maní, cereales, pastas, salsa para pasta, macarrones, puré de papas, mezcla de panqueques, arroz, frijoles y sopa enlatada. “Somos muy afortunados de tener un personal que dice presente para ayudar a los menos afortunados de nuestra comunidad”, dijo el Presidente de la Comisión Frank Attkisson. El Condado trabajó con el Center for Compassion para colectar las donaciones para el Concilio. Thirty years of giving back Kissimmee, FL - A Home Delivered Meal program staffed and managed by community volunteers turned out to be the cornerstone of the Osceola Council on Aging, leading to the Council’s incorporation in 1971. The investigation was initiated after OCIB and DEA received multiple complaints about Dr. Borges over prescribing narcotic medications to his patients. Search warrants were obtained and executed at both clinic locations

and at his residence in Chuluota. The Florida Department of Health issued an emergency order to Dr. Borges restricting his privilege to prescribe narcotics. This is an ongoing investigation and is being conducted in conjunction with the Florida Attorney General’s Office of Statewide Prosecution.

Three drivers arrested for street racing Osceola County, FL - On November 10 at approximately 3:50 a.m., Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies were contacted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in reference to possible street racing near the Osceola/Orange County line near Southchase. Osceola deputies were in the area of Orange Blossom Trail and the Osceola Parkway when they observed three vehicles traveling at speeds over 111 mph in a speed limit zone of 50 mph. The vehicles: a black BMW, a blue Ford Mustang and a blue Mitsubishi Lancer were trying to out accelerate each other while traveling southbound on Orange Blossom Trail.

Deputies conducted traffic stops on all three vehicles. The drivers did not cooperate with the investigation, but based on the evidence, all three were arrested and charged with Racing on a Highway and Reckless Driving. Detectives clear 15 home burglaries with arrest of two suspects Osceola County, FL - Since June of this year, detectives from the East Property Crimes Unit and East Community Response Team have investigated numerous reports of unoccupied residential burglaries in the Neptune Pointe subdivision, Remington subdivision and Neptune Road/Kings Highway area. The suspect(s) would knock on the door of a residence and if no one answered they would break in through a window or door and steal electronics and jewelry, pawning the stolen property at a local pawn shops in Kissimmee. East Property Crimes detectives were able to identify Antonio Torres and Claudio Fernandez as possible suspects. On November 11, CRT deputies conducted an undercover investigation. They followed Torres and Fernandez to Brookestone Drive in Kissimmee. Torres walked to the front door and made entry to the residence. A few minutes later, he motioned Fernandez to enter the residence and they exited with a television. Deputies apprehended the suspects without incident. They were taken into custody and cooperated with the investigation which will result in clearing at least 15 unoccupied burglary cases. Torres and Fernandez were charged with Possession of Burglary Tools, Unoccupied Burglary to a Dwelling, Unoccupied Burglary to a Structure, Criminal Mischief, Grand Theft and Resisting without Violence. Orlando was well represented on national television, with more than 20,274 in attendance- a standalone friendly record in the Southeastern U.S. The crowd was also the highest in the USWNT’s series of friendlies in 2013 in the U.S.

After an impressive three game winning streak, Orlando went in the opposite direction with a three game losing streak. The Boston Celtics faced the Magic at the Amway Center last Friday. It was a close game the whole way through. Aaron Afflalo put up 23 points for Orlando but the Magic’s 89 were not enough to beat the Celtics who finished with 91. Nik Vucevic would also have a double double with 13 rebounds and 14 points. Orlando took to the road to face the Atlanta Hawks. The Magic have not beaten the Hawks the last ten times they have faced them and this time would be no different. Afflalo would put up another 21 points while Jameer Nelson and Andrew Nicholson would add 13 each. Their efforts weren’t enough and the Magic would lose by ten with a final score of 104 to 94.

The Magic will face the Dallas Mavericks this Saturday. After back to back losses, Orlando would travel to Boston seeking revenge on the Celtics. Boston was on fire, shooting 60%. While seven Magic players would score ten or more points, it wasn’t enough to make up for the 18 turnovers. Victor Oladipo contributed 17 which was right behind Afflalo’s 18. The 105 to 120 loss would be a tough one for this young Magic team but they moved on quick. Wednesday, the Magic hosted the Milwaukee Bucks. Coach Jacque Vaughn played a very small line up to match the Bucks small size. Milwaukee was up by 19 and the game seemed to be an easy victory that is, until Afflalo and Vucevic came alive in the third quarter. Aaron Afflalo would finish the game with 36 points. Eight of those were three pointers and seven of those eight were made

in the second half. Moe Harkless and Oladipo would add ten each. Harkless also had three monster blocks. Vucevic’s 17 points and 11 rebounds would be enough for the Orlando Magic to come back and win this one. At the final buzzer, the Magic had 94 to the Bucks 91. This team does not give up.
