WHAT IS A PRACTICAL CATHOLIC?

The one requirement of membership in the Knights of Columbus is that a man be a “practical Catholic” in union with the Holy See. What does the term “practical Catholic” mean? Faith for Father McGivney and his Knights was not simply knowing the catechism, important as that is. It was putting into practice the Great Commandment of Jesus: To love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself. True to the parable of the Good Samaritan, love of neighbor does not stop at the church door. It goes out into the streets, the highways and byways, to encounter those on the margins of society – who were often immigrant Catholics in Father McGivney’s day – and bring them practical charity and fraternal love. A “practical Catholic” has a love of home, family and church, where faith is nurtured. Yet his faith leads him into the world, even a world suffused with anti-Catholic sentiment, in the spirit of the Good Samaritan. He is called to bind up the wounds of the sick and abandoned, to provide for their temporal needs, to support the faith of Catholics and pass on the faith to inquirers, and to live a life of prayer and virtue, with love of God and neighbor. 2

SPECIAL REPORT

NORTH COAST NAVIGATOR

JANUARY 2021

PRAYER FOR CANNONIZATION God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild promotes the cause for sainthood of the founder of the Knights of Columbus, who was beatified on Oct. 31, 2020. Members of the Guild, and anyone devoted to Father McGivney, can play an active role in the cause by praying for his intercession in times of need, especially in cases of serious illness, and reporting to the Guild any favors received. Membership in the Guild is free and open to anyone who is devoted to Father McGivney and wishes to invoke his intercession and assist in his sainthood cause through prayer. Members receive a quarterly newsletter and are remembered in a weekly Mass offered for their intentions. The Guild has more than 176,000 members, and you are encouraged to join by filling out and submitting the online form. Please assist in the cause of Father McGivney by spreading the word about this holy and blessed priest. For more information or to request a prayer card email guild@kofc.org or visit fathermcgivney.org 3

STATE PROGRAMS MEASURE UP Jim Maslach, State Warden The 2020 Measure Up Campaign as finally been completed and all of the checks have been sent back to the councils. The 2020 Final Report is available on the state website site. Overall, $168,180 was raised by 133councils that went back to 166-organizations. The program will be back in the spring now that we are familiar with how to deal with COVID-19. The dates are April 22-24 and April 29, 30 and May 1 with the FINAL turn-in due by AUGUST 1. If your council needs stickers or rulers, please contact Jim Maslach, State Warden. Stickers are available to download and print out. Knights for Christ Coming Soon ! A Virtual Retreat for Knights by Knights! Knights of the Crusades wore heavy armor to protect themselves from Muslim weapons of war. Today, many of us wear the protective armor of fear that shields our belief system of faith, hope and love from expressing itself to others. Some of us are vulnerable to potential criticism of our innermost thoughts and beliefs about our faith; our Catholicism and our spiritual journey. The purpose of the Knights to Christ Spiritual Enrichment Initiative is to dissolve that fear. It opens our hearts to hear divinely inspired messages from others. These messages of spiritual strength and experience emboldens us to share our own experiences of faith with other men starved for spirituality. If you are interested in helping with this retreat, please contact Jim Maslach.

If you want to share your council’s Faith In Action, please send pictures and brief description to Jim Maslach at kofcjkm@gmail.com. 8
